These were the most important pieces of orchestral music published before Haydn. Although Corelli undoubtedly composed a large quantity of orchestral music, these were the only concertos he permitted to be published, and they immediately established a special type of concerto form for an entire future generation of composers. Included in this set is the famous "Christmas Concerto," a holiday favorite, which was also frequently imitated. The performances preserved here are fantastic. Ensemble 415 uses a big orchestra, with plenty of color and depth of sound. Add to this Harmonia Mundi's richly- detailed recording, and the result is the finest version of this music available. --David Hurwitz --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

Gorgeous performance! Ensemble 415 has rendered these concerti so beautifully. If there was any question in your mind as to why these concerti were so highly regarded for so many years, this recording will make it abundantly clear. Absolutely divine music!

5 out of 5 stars As close to the Scarlatti as you can be.......2000-08-01

What a fine set, with the most silken, super-refined, luxurious presentation since Ettore Gracis and the Orchestra Alessandro Scarlatti di Napoli did it in '66 for Archiv.

Bianchini is a magnificent artist: the translucent light of the string sound is textbook Roman string technqiue, but the close observance of mood, tempo, rythmic and even dramatic values gives it that same, timeless, absolute music stance that pretty much leaves the very correct and very stiff-upper-lipped Pinnock and a lesser extent the slightly scrapy Marriner in the shade. Gracis and the Scarlatti would feel at one with this...and this lessens the pain that that wonderful old Neapolitan set has STILL not been reissued.

I would put the Bianchini here right at the top along with the old Musici issue. There really is no reason to wait for the Gracis to reappear...buy this and the Musici...and when that old Scarlatti wonder comes along, get it too, and you're covered. All three in your lineup will give you enchanting Corelli in their absorbing, individual ways!
