5 out of 5 stars Champagne Music!.......2006-07-09

Thank goodness that these well filled CDs of selections from three of Offenbach's most entertaining and tuneful operettas are available. Exactly the thing to provide some hearty nourishment for Winter nights. Ideal also for a Summer barbecue. In both cases, a glass of champagne, or at least some other bubbly beverage, would be good to have at hand - everything here no doubt will call for a toast or several.

It is so nice to be able to hear in these translations the witty words, sung with welcome clarity and meaning by these admirable artists. As I recall, there were no microphones in sight, and perhaps not even used, when this production of Orpheus In The Underworld was brought to Australia, with a few cast changes but the same sparkle as shown here. Crisp diction and lively, often lovely, singing - a great recipe for enjoyable listening indeed.

The recording sounds a bit shrill here and there, but what a churlish quibble; to Hades with such curmudgeonly qualifications! This is music to raise the spirits, and not just those from Hades.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Performance.......2007-03-31

This is an an authentic, accessible, entertaining, and deeply satisfying performance. Although I like all of the principal singers, my two favorite are Clive Revill as Ko-Ko and Jean Allister as Katisha. For me, the key to a successful Gilbert and Sullivan performance is that it is not only funny, but also touching. In my opinion, Revill and Allister score high in both departments. In their final scene together, they are both vulnerable and hilarious at the same time. One small detail about this recording that bothers me slightly is that the overture has been rewritten. It is a nice medley, but I miss the original. I understand that Sullivan did not write it, but it is based on his tunes and I've always liked it. But don't let that stop you from getting this recording. I consider it to be the best Mikado on record.

5 out of 5 stars ARTICULATE MIKADO.......2007-01-31

Articulate - both in diction and in musical interpretation - this re-release of the 1960's Sadlers Wells recording of Gilbert and Sullivan's MIKADO is quite delightful. The care and loving detail, which were the keystones of SWO's productions of G & S and operettas in the 1960s onstage, are preserved here in Alexander Faris's splendidly gutsy interpretation of the most popular of all the Savoy Operas; if his speeds are at times too leisurely, all can be forgiven just to hear the superb soloists; the expert diction of Denis Dowling as Pooh-Bah; the heroic tones of John Wakefield as the Wandering Minstrel; Marion Studholme singing the best "Sun Whose Rays" you will ever here on disc; Jean Allister as a correctly dominating Katisha, (hurray - a real contralto!), with a superb glissando in "Beauty and the Bellow"; the glorious Pat Kern as Pitti-Sing making so much more of the traditional soubrette; John Heddle Nash giving a singing and acting lesson with Pish-Tush's only solo; and the droll Clive Revill so completely at ease in the comic role of Ko-Ko, (though it is strange that his running out of breath at the end of his verse in the Act Two trio was not corrected!) I have to say that this recording of THE MIKADO puts all other D'Oyly Carte and Glyndeboune recordings in the shade, and the inclusion of highlights from Sadlers Wells IOLANTHE from 1962 is just an added bonus - the overture in this is simply stunning, and how good to hear Eric Shilling, Heather Begg, and Elizabeth Harwood obviously enjoying themselves so much singing Sullivan's most musical of scores.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a worthy recording of the Mikado!.......2004-03-03

It really does make a difference, when performing Gilbert and Sullivan, to use singers who can act rather than the other way round. Every soloist here utilizes a very forward, "in-the-mask" vocal placement, which not only reduces the need to force, but helps to render their diction crystal-clear. Sample Jean Allister's Katisha. No plummy, oratorio contralto tones for her. Here is all the waspish, incisive malevolence that is already there in the writing; she just reveals it by singing and pronouncing the texts in a light and unforced manner. This approach helps to restore the vim and vigor to an opera that can often seem tired and "played-out" to modern ears. If the recording has any weakness, it may possibly be found in the Yum-yum and Nanki-Poo. Marion Studholme is perhaps more shrill than is necessary, while John Wakefield seems to have wandered in from a performance of Dream of Gerontius. These are minor quibbles, however. The overall excellence of the performance quells any doubts, with Alexander Faris' conducting a model of transparent clarity. The Iolanthe excerpts are also well-done, but it's Mikado that is the jewel here. Don't hesitate; buy it today!

5 out of 5 stars Great historical recording for our time.......2002-03-31

I purchased this CD primarily for its recording of "Dona Nobis Pacem," one of Vaughan Williams' most difficult to find works on CD. I didn't realize that it was an archival recording until it arrived, but it is still excellent.

The first two tracks, the "Te Deum" and the "Serenade to Music" are excellent, with the "Te Deum" recorded at Westminster Abbey at the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. The "Serenade to Music" comes from a very early recording by the original performing ensemble selected for the first performance by Vaughan Williams himself.

The "Dona Nobis Pacem" is certainly the highlight of this recording. With its calls for peace in a very war-like time, perhaps it is particularly appropriate to hear anew today. This recording is conducted by the composer, one of the few Vaughan Williams recordings of any piece still available today. The depth of passion evident in the recording easily drowns out the occassional click and pop of the very old master.

All in all, a wonderful historical recording of a great piece not heard often enough by one of the great composers of the twentieth century.

3 out of 5 stars "You Pays Your Money....".......2005-12-25

Beecham's second of three Messiah recordings originally issued in 1947 is really his best. I have already reviewed the somewhat better transfer on Biddulph so I won't go on and on here about this great performance. This Classica D'Oro issue is certainly much easier to find.

Firstly, though not hi/fi the sound is pretty good though the Biddulph issue is a little better. Depending on your speakers you may want to brighten up the sound a bit.

The only real problem with this set is that Classica D'Oro's anonymous transfer engineer obviously didn't know the score and left two dacapo arias hanging at the ends of their "B" sections. Handel would not have been amused! In the days of '78 records you were expected to just turn the record over to hear the repeat of the "A" section.

In addition, the original issue had two numbers from Part II, the recitative "Unto Which of the Angels" (here sung by the soprano) and the chorus "Let all the angels of God" inexplicably inserted near the end of the entire oratorio. That mistake is duly repeated here.

The Biddulph set brings collector's prices. This bargain issue is priced so low that it's hard to complain much about a few mistakes in the transfer.

I say grab it now!

1 out of 5 stars Insipid English Faust.......2006-04-03

As a curio representing the "early electric" era of complete opera recordings of the late 1920's-early 1930's, this might merit some tepid interest. Otherwise, it is an abysmal rendering of a sentimental but beautiful old opera. How Sir Thomas Beecham was snared into conducting this silly relic in 1929 is incomprehensible. The singing is worse than mediocre; it resembles a parody of the type of operatic scenes depicted in early talkie movie musicals circa 1930. Robert Easton has got to be the most dreadful devil ever recorded, more or less talking his way in a flat drone through the part rather than really singing. The less said about the other two leads, Heddle Nash and Miriam Licette, the better. Beecham was much better served to conduct an authentic Faust, in French, with Geori Boue & cast in 1947. If you want a 1930 Faust - and there is an excellent one - get the French conducted by Henri Busser, and/or Beecham's later, postwar version.

2 out of 5 stars "Faust" in English with English singers. Cor blimey!.......2005-05-18

Well, sometimes even the greatest conductors boot one.

This is an old, old recording of Gounod's "Faust." It has been said that all that is required to make "Faust" a great opera is a quartet of the four finest singers in the world. Evidently, they were out of town when this recording was made.

Probably the best known among the performers is the tenor, Heddle Nash. As tenors go, he was VERY English. In lighter material, even in Mozart, he wasn't bad, but he is hopeless as Faust. Listen to the sample of his big aria, here disguised as "All hail, thou dwelling pure and lowly" (not "All hail thy dwellings," as shown above.) Go ahead, I'll wait. . . Painful, isn't it?

As for the other singers, sadly, they are all cursed by English vocal training.

The English singing translation used in this performance provides one of the strongest arguments ever made against translating any opera.

Since the set offers a few wry laughs, I give it two stars. Put it on the shelf next to your Florence Foster Jenkins collection.

Gerontius was second nature to these performers, and it shows in their lively word colorings and obvious conviction. Heddle Nash was Britain's top interwar lyric tenor, and he brings fervor and imagination to a role he was urged to take on by Elgar himself. Gladys Ripley's flexible contralto is lovely; the other singers and the chorus can't be faulted. Malcolm Sargent directs with power; there's an electricity about this 1945 recording, made while the guns of war were still resounding in Europe. The substantial filler is played with elegance and energy by the young Paul Tortelier; Testament's solid mono sound is clear, though you do hear more with stereo from Adrian Boult or John Barbirolli. --Dan Davis

4 out of 5 stars Historically Valuable Recording.......2004-02-11

Although this collection contains many historically important recordings of Vaughan Williams, I find the sound quality is not up to Dutton's usual audio magic. Much of it sounds distorted and does not contain many of the upper level frequencies Dutton usually pulls out of the grooves of these old 78 r.p.m. recordings. At the same time, the bass frequencies do resonate in abundance and their richness provides the redeeming virtue for this disc.

This collection is historically important because of the eminence of Sir Henry Wood as a musician of his day as well as his collaboration and relationship with the composer. Indeed, the 'Serenade to Music' is even dedicated to him on the occasion of his fifty years as a conductor. If you enjoy historical recordings, by all means, enjoy this one. At the time, do not expect the usual audio quality that one often hears from Dutton's historical releases.

4 out of 5 stars BETTER THAN MANY.......2005-01-27

Elgar inscribed the quotation `This is the best of me' on the score of Gerontius. Elgar also personally selected Heddle Nash to sing the part. This vintage reissue should be of the strongest possible interest to devotees of the work for the latter reason alone. I know it from LP, but technical considerations are not a major concern here and the recorded quality even on vinyl is astonishingly good and presumably has lost nothing in the transfer.

This recording dates from 1945, before the war was quite over, and it shows the best of everyone concerned. In his later years Sargent got a raw deal from critics, the public and especially from the cruel wit of Sir Thomas Beecham for his popularising of the classics, but he is a far better conductor than many were prepared to let on. I still prefer his version of Walton's first symphony (not seemingly available now) to the more famous one by Previn, and there is a quite magnificent live account from him with Sena Jurinac of the Strauss Four Last Songs that seems to me to rival even the celebrated Schwarzkopf/Szell reading. I am likewise enthusiastic about this Gerontius. Where Sargent seems to me outstandingly successful is in bringing light and shade to the score. In the prelude he keeps the tempo moving instead of trying to wring the last ounce of spirituality and solemnity out of it, but I back his approach. The entire first part of Gerontius can very easily stagnate in performance, and Sargent seems alive to this danger and skilful in avoiding it - throughout the whole section, not just in the prelude. He does not pull the tempo around, but there is great tact and sensitivity in his handling of it, and forward momentum is not allowed to lapse. Nash is quite superb, and remarkably well recorded. I like to think I would have found his voice absolutely right even if I had not known whose stamp of authority it carried. Gladys Ripley as the Angel should give nobody any problems, I very much hope. She is not in the `hooty' oratorio tradition of English mezzos/contraltos, her voice is fresh and appealing and she still does very well with the occasional low notes. Norman Walker is likewise well cast in the small part of the Angel of the Agony.

More of the orchestral detail than you might expect comes through the 60-year-old sound, and the balance has been very well handled indeed. Part-way through the second half the sound seems to recede a little, but this soon passes. It would be a bit much to expect the great cry of `Praise to the Holiest' to make the kind of effect it can do nowadays, but even it is not badly dealt with at all.

No doubt this is mainly an issue for collectors, but I would tentatively recommend it to a wider public than that. Nash has totally unique authority, for one thing, and the sound manages to do him justice. Well worth at least sampling, and in my own opinion well worth owning.
