As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

This recording of Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is one of my favourites. The performance just exudes delightful energy. The Berliner Philharmoniker is in fine form under the baton of legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan.

The disc also includes equally impressive performances of Serreneta Notturna and the three Divertimentos KV 136 - KV 137 - KV 138.

The sound is superb. The music, recorded in 1966 & 1968 sounds like it was recorded far more recently. There is little tape hiss evident in the recording at all.

For $7.98 this is a great value CD of some of Mozart's most beautiful music. Highly Recommended.

Mozart's Eine Kleine Nachtmusik has always been a favorite piece, and I was overjoyed to find this recording conducted by my favorite conductor, Herbert Von Karajan. Karajan's brilliant conducting once again inspires the Berliner Philharmoniker to perform beautifully.
Karl Bohm said of Mozart's music "It has the effect of a fountain of youth," and that is the best way to describe these works. I always find my spirits lifted, my mind rejuvenated when listening to these performances.
Eine Kleine Nachtmusik is done here by the BPO as well as I have ever heard it done, and is the gem of this CD. Seranata Notturna is equally impressive. The three Divertimentos are wonderful performances as well.
Deutsche Grammaphon's fantastic digital mastering allows you to enjoy every note, with virtually no tape hiss, etc.- a tremendous feat considering that these performances were recorded in 1966 and 1968!
This collection of some of Mozart's most beautiful compositions would make a wonderful addition to any library of classical music.

Serenades as these were commissioned by patrons for some nice background music for significant outdoor events (weddings, public celebrations). But, Mozart being Mozart, he went beyond the call in poured out fantastic displays of musical diversity and melodies in this music that went far beyond mere "wallpaper compositions." The four most popular of his serenades are suberbly recorded on these two discs. Each is a galante work of art - full of vivacity, celebration, youthful enthusiasm and skillful composition for a then young Mozart. They are some of the most upbeat and happy music Mozart wrote and showcase his talents at his galante finest. While any individual serenade might be slightly better performed by another ensemble, it is unlikely one will find a better complete set than these. The recorded sound is top notch and the vibrant performaces by the ASMF completely fitting to the type of celebratory music. Conductor Sir Neville Marriner is well-known for his affinity for Mozart and these recordings show that by their well-chosen tempos, tasteful accuntuations and smooth, lyrical flow throughout. A wonderful survey of Mozart's serenades most fitting for a sunny afternoon at home or festive occasion.

Although analog recordings from the mid-80's, these have been digitally remastered and offer bright crisp sound along with a well-defined "stage presence" as if the orchestra were right there in your room. Marriner conducts the ASMF and their modern instruments with grace and elegance, letting the music carry you away. I have no idea what the "In The Fields" part of Academy Of St Martin's name means, but in fact if you close your eyes and use your imagination just a wee bit, you'll find yourself sitting among beautiful fields listening to this sublime music!
If you prefer period instruments, Manze and the English Concert have just released "Night Music" on the Harmonia Mundi label, which features excellent digital recordings of two of Mozart's serenades: Eine Kleine Nachtmusik and Seranata Notturna, as well as other Mozart compositions that Manze felt fit within the theme of night music.

These are very fine performances by one of the leading conductors and ensembles of our time. Ensemble is crisp, phrasing is lovely, and the tempos are superbly judged. The recording is good, too, set in a glowing acoustic. At two discs for the price of one this simply can't be beat.

A great introduction to several of Mozart's great masterpieces including the beloved Eine Kleine Nachtmusik as well as the Posthorn and other great serenades, all played with grace, meticulousness, and understatement by Sir Neville and the Academy. This great orchestra never goes over the top,and lets the music speak for itself. There may be more dramatic versions by larger orchestras, but these get to the essence of the music and let it speak, quitely and beautifully, for itself.

Marriner, a great Mozart conductor, leads the AMSF in these masterpieces. All of the recordings are wonderful with well-judged tempos. The string section of the orchestra distinguish themselves. Philips has warm sound and good liner notes. The Serenata Notturna and Posthorn serenades were love at first hearing for me, and these recordings are the perfect place to look. I don't like all of the Haffner serenade, but some of the movements are gorgeous. For the ambitious collectors, Marriner's earlier Eine Kleine Nachtmusik on EMI is even better than this one.

First off, I am guessing you are considering this record because it is done by Gidon Kremer. If not, please understand that he is a gifted nut job. He is not the place to go for a canonical interpretation. And Mozart would applaud this judgement and Kremer's course. Mozart loved fun, not reverence and protocol. He did opera for the masses.

I called Kremer a nut job, but in a serious way. He does not fool with the music. The performances are tight, disciplined presentations. But he does have his own way. Not technically, mind you, as we see some performers do. Rather it is a context of presentation where faithful joins fun.

Back to the rest of you Kremerata fans. Getting past the opening tintinabulation and more, rather than kleine, nachtmusik, you get to some quite interesting Schnittke. Here you are in the heart of what Kremer knows how to do best. This piece is the anchor for the record.

But I confess that the Leopold Mozart's Kids Symphony is the real draw for me. I promise not to tell on you for this cheap pleasure. The trick is not to play to the toys. You gotta do it strait or it would be a pandering flop.

The performances on this CD are superb. They are especially successful at bringing out the playful side of the Mozartian musical vision -- not only as shown in the obviously experimental pieces by other composers, but also in how the more-familiar pieces by Mozart are interpreted and recorded (e.g., the cadenzas in the final movement of the "Serenata Notturna"). Less impressive is the way these pieces fit together. The Kremerata Baltica do bring out the essential commonality of the music, but that commonality is sometimes overwhelmed by the prominent idiosyncracies: the Raskatov contribution with its keening violin, the somber Silvestrov piece floating in from far away on a windy day, the jarring familiarity of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" in the middle of works you're likely hearing for the first time, and especially the loudly recorded toy sounds interpersed throughout Leopold Mozart's symphony. Not to say that these distracting traits make for bad music -- Gidon Kremer's playing on the Andante is particularly lovely -- or that someone listening closely to the CD would find these traits objectionable. But potential buyers at least should be aware that they will not be getting the sort of Mozart disc that people put on as background music so that they can relax and drink a cup of chamomile tea. You'll need to approach it with the same playfulness that Mozart often exhibited in his compositions.

Violinist Gidon Kremer and his talented ensemble, Kremerata Baltica, have been producing fresh interpretations of classic and contemporary classical works for some time now. This release is no exception.

The idea behind "After Mozart" is a simple one but produces wonderful results. The music features compositions by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (and his father, Leopold), as well as latter-day composers inspired by him. Raskatrov, Silvestrov and Schnittke are among the composers featured.

As usual with this ensemble, the music is bright, brilliant, and a true celebration of the compositions. I could have done without the inclusion of "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" (a nice piece of music but soooo overexposed), but otherwize the selections are wisely chosen. Bravo to Kremer and his musicians.

    Karajan was devoted to Mozart, and we have major recordings from him covering five decades. In general his style hasn't worn well, attracting criticisms that it is variously too slick, too polished, detached, overblown, etc. All the usual charges against a conductor who isns't up to the minute. These digital readings are awfully polished, too much so to be totally convincing. But I recommend this CD for anyone who wants to hear the incomparable unanimity of the Berlin strings. Few examples could be found to demonstrate such astonishing perfection of ensemble. The chief attraction issn't Eine Kleine Machtmusick but the delightful Diverimento for strings and two horns K. 287, an inspired half hour of Rococo panache.

    This is probably my favorite recording of Mozart's most famous serenades. Karajan plays the music well because he plays it lightly, not like some other conductors who totally over-romanticize Mozart. The tempos are quick, the playing is superb, and the sound is excellent digital sound. Karajan's precision and his need to bring out the beauty in music really works for these Mozart pieces, which when played like this, can truly make you believe that you're listening to the most beautiful music ever written(that title, however, in my opinion, goes to Bach's Mass In B Minor). The only other version of this music that even compares is Karl Bohm's, due largely to the fact that he was truly the great Mozart conductor of the century. Still, in this one instance, I must give Karajan the edge with Mozart. If you don't own these pieces, I suggest immediately purchasing this disc. If you already own other versions, buy this as a supplement, but I guarantee it will replace the others as your top choice after a listening.

        William Steinberg's Pittsburgh Symphony recordings have been largely ignored by the record industry in recent years. He recorded all 9 Beethoven and 4 Brahms Symphonies for Command Classics in the 1960s, later released on MCA CDs in the late 1980s. For EMI, Steinberg/Pittsburgh recorded Beethoven Symphonies 7,8; Brahms 1; Mozart 35,40,41; Haydn 94. This is great, very masculine Mozart, in fast tempos that are never out of control, and beautifully recorded by EMI's engineers. Tempos are faster than Bruno Walter's Columbia recordings
        (CBS, made in the late 1950s, near the end of his career) and slower than Szell/Cleveland (Sony Classical) for a point of reference.

        Both Mozart's Symphony 40 and "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" benefit from Steinberg's full throated treatment.

        Sir Colin Davis' early 1960s recordings of "Serenata Notturna" and Overtures to "Abduction from the Seraglio," "The Magic Flute," "Don Giovanni" and "Cosi fan Tutte" are in excellent sound, the Philharmonia (Serenata) and Royal Philharmonic (Overtures) sounding terrific, again rich, full and masculine, as in Steinberg's recordings.

        With over 70 minutes of music, this disc is a winner, unless you are a fan of chamber orchestra or period instrument orchestra Mozart. For great sound and playing at a budget price, this is hard to beat.

        The original EMI Seraphim budget CD line has to be the greatest value for the money in the history of music. For half the price of other so-called budget lines, including the new version of EMI Seraphim and the Sony Essential Classics series, you get first-rate performances from the golden age of stereo by some of the greatest conductors of the century. On this particular title you get brilliant performances of Mozart's 40th Symphony and Eine Kleine Nachtmusik by William Steinberg and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra from 1958. Steinberg is an immense conductor and I have spent considerable time (and sometimes money) tracking down his great EMI recordings, which have been reissued on CD in recent years only to be deleted at an alarming rate. The remainder of this disc features Colin Davis conducting the Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic Orchestras in Mozart's Serenata Notturna and various Overtures from 1961-62. Most are familiar with Davis' great recordings from the 1970s to the present, but his early recordings are a real treat. Well, with all this great music, you've got a classic disc at any price.

        ...BETTER! After having received numerous recently selections that were a disappointment, this was a welcomed master works collection!

        Superbly recorded and arranged, the sound quality is excellent. If you are a mozart fan or want to be a mozart fan, don't pass this set up. What may seem a little pricey is actually a little over a dollar a disk making this set an exceptional value.

        Many gems in here. Each disc is in a decent cardboard sleeve and all are housed in a very study and easy to access slip case. Overall the packaging design is wonderful and you will be surprised just how little space a 40 cd collection will take up.

        But I can not praise the sound recording quality enough. A wonderful mix of string quartets, symphonies and opera including a stunning rendition and recording of Figaro in 3 parts.

        A praiseworthy set from a beginning collector.
