5 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-01-10

As usual, Celibidache does not disappoint. The playing is secure and the interpretation is `pre Munich Celi,' which means that the uncanny `insight' is not yet there. But still, better than most.

Sergiu Celibidache was one of the podium's great individualists whose idiosyncratic interpretations drive listeners either to scorn or to reverence. This compilation of broadcasts made during his Swedish years provides material for both views, though most listeners should come away awed by "Celi" at his best. The Sibelius Fifth, for example, is a great performance, incredibly intense within a spacious framework of epic grandeur. The Sibelius Second, while on a less exalted level, is painted on a similarly broad canvas with playing of remarkable concentration and power. The Hindemith, too, is outstanding, Celibidache probing depths few other conductors find in the work. His Strauss is more conventional, affectionate without eclipsing other, more volatile Straussians such as Reiner and Kempe. Since Jacqueline Du Pré's picture shares the cover with the conductor, her fans will be curious about the unlikely combination of the rhapsodic cellist and the refined, even calculating conductor. Sure enough, they tend to go their own ways in the Dvorák, leading to an often exciting, although anything but unified, performance. All in all, this set is one of the most desirable of DG's Celibidache releases. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Mid-Seventies Celibidache is more 'normal' and perhaps better.......2006-09-02

It's not right to typify a great musician with a simple tag, but it happens, and as a result Klemperer is known as 'slow' and Celibidache as 'slowest.' Here in Stuttgart between 1974 and 1978, a decade ahead of the Brahms cycle released by EMI, the tempos are not eccentrically slow, however. They're on a par with Bernstein's later Brahms cycle from Vienna (also on DG), but in most movements about 2 min. faster than Celi in Munich. Your reaction will depend on whether you find this idiosyncratic maestro better when he's full tilt into his obsessions or only halfway there.

Personally, I like the DG cycle better in that it remains within hailing distance of Brahms' actual tempo indications. The readings are full of passion, and Celibidache's rubato and highly musical phrasing stand out better when the ear isn't burdened by ultra-slow speeds. A good touchstone is the finale of Sym. #1, where many conductors miss the sense of mystery and anticipation that Brahms builds in the slow introduction. Celi handles it wonderfully, and when we get to the main Allegro, he conducts with plenty of inner life.

There are times when the tempos are relatively alike in both the EMI and DG cycles. The Fourth Sym., which differs by only a minute per movement, shows up some stylistic differences. There's a surging accelerando in the first movement from Stuttgart that's gone in Munich. The finale of the Fourth has more tension in Stuttgart, too. But those who prefer the Munich orchestra and EMI's sonics are right. The Stuttogart radio orchestra is not as good, especially in the solo winds, and DG's sound is serviceable FM stereo, not the studio-quality sound one hears from Bavaria.

Since I mostly care about interpretation, I had no trouble preferring the earlier DG cycle, but I can see how Celi's afficianados could come to the opposite conclusion.

    5 out of 5 stars Revelatory!.......2004-01-29

Extraordinary music making from the most philosophical of conductors. Celibedache's handling of Brahms's symphonies is masterful in concept and execution. Hours and hours of wonderful listening guaranteed.

5 out of 5 stars Brahms by the master!.......2001-05-30

The only promlem here is, how do you choose between the EMI and DG Celibidache/Brahms symphony cycles? They are both amazing accounts of magical music making. I got them both!

4 out of 5 stars Not as good as the EMI set.......2000-06-18

These are of course great performances of these symphonies, but IMO the EMI set with Celi and his Muncherner philarmoniker is absolutly unsurpassed. The Stuggart orchestra is not as good as the bavarian one, and the sound being good is not good enough for what Celibidache demmands. of course these performances being slow are not as radical and metaphysical as the ones from the late 80's and 90's.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!.......2000-06-14

A PERFECT PERFORMANCE OF BRAHMS SYMPHONIES,, CELIBIDACHE MAKE THE SOUND TOO SLOW AND GLORIOUS .AND I THINK IT'S THE BETTER SET OF BRAHMS SYMPHONIES. P.S:THE SOUND IS FINE

Celibidache's mysticism and grand rhetorical style are suited to Bruckner's grandiose symphonies. These 1969-1981 performances of the "middle" symphonies are companions to another DG box of the late symphonies. Both sets compete with Celibidache's later versions with the superior Munich Philharmonic, recorded by EMI in more spacious, detailed sound. But Celibidache's many admirers will want both, for while the EMI set amply demonstrates the conductor's often wayward tempos and obsession with bringing out details others glide over, the earlier Celibidache on these discs is much more straightforward. His Munich performances stressed the ultimate in orchestral transparency and detail; these earlier ones are more flowing and strive for thicker orchestral sound and softer accents. But they still bear the Celibidache stamp--slower and grander than most Bruckner performances, if less idiosyncratic. DG offers an interesting filler with a straightforward account of Mozart's Haffner Symphony and a bonus rehearsal disc documenting Celibidache's perfectionist strivings. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars wild abandon in the scherzo of no.4.......2005-06-25

I've obtained no.4 separate from the entire collection- where Celi conducts the Swedish Radio Symphony orchestra.
This performance contradicts the usual sterotypes assosciated with this great conductor. The Scherzo is taken at a frenetic pace.Surely,it has never been faster! The energy is irresistable and the other movements are done with a similar sense of verve and rhythmic energy.Herbert Von Karjian's EMI version is alarmingly tentative in the 2nd subject group of the ist movement where the celibidace has a rustic gait which ensures that the tension doesn't drop.

5 out of 5 stars Mastery of an idiom........2001-05-31

The DG cycle of Celibidache's Bruckner is a facinating one, and a relativly easy way into the sound world of Celibidache. Here you have the greatest conductor since maybe Mahler navigate the complex metaphysical romanticism of Bruckner with consumate ease. These CDs are a good preparation for the other-worldly deeply profound revalations of Celibidache's '80s, 90s concerts of Bruckner on EMI.
