Beethoven was the last great composer to write string trios, and his are the finest works of their type. Mozart hardly touched this particular combination, and Haydn wrote quite few very early works which are now completely unknown. In any case, Haydn used two violins and a cello, whereas with Beethoven the standard combination became violin, viola, and cello. These are all early works, expert examples of all that Beethoven learned from Haydn and Mozart in preparation for the writing of his first great string quartets. But far from being mere composition exercises, these are highly rewarding works on their own, and these outstanding performances make the best possible case for their claim to be ranked among Beethoven's chamber music masterpieces. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Great Playing from the Grumiaux Trio.......2007-05-01
This is another great recording from the late 1960s re-released on the Philips Duo label at bargain price, they provide an excellent source of the chamber music of Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert. The string trio has been a much neglected music form, the only ones of note from this period have been the great Divertimento K563 by Mozart, these 5 from the young Beethoven, and one from Schubert. And they are all fine compositions, very well worth a listen. These from a 20 year old Beethoven are lyrical and joyfull. Despite the age of the recording the sound is very acceptable, and the performance from the Grumiaux Trio is superb.
As this recording is about 40 years old it must be expected that there are better performances available, but I would suggest that you don't worry about that, this one is very very good, and very cheap. Without hesitation, 5 stars.
Glorious! Beethoven .......2005-03-30
If you were to ask any composer from Mozart to the present, the task they would be most reluctant to tackle would be to write a trio for three stringed instruments.
The string quartet has long been considered to be the 'rite of passage'--the medium in which a composer proves he (or she) has 'chops'--the complete mastery of technique (harmony, counterpoint, voice-leading, etc.)--to write successfully for any combination of instruments .
But the string trio presents a unique challenge. With only three instruments (and six pitches available at any time), one must create a complete sonic universe with all the richness and diversity that will keep a listener entranced from beginning to end of a 20-minute piece. Beethoven evidently was inspired by this challenge and created five early masterpieces for this ensemble that have never been surpassed in their imagination and superb craftsmanship. They are among the best things he ever wrote.
It is an intellectual and sensual pleasure to hear Grumiaux lead his colleagues through these rich musical landscapes. I've always loved his elegant, musical playing (I'm a violinist) and consider him to be the ideal interpreter for this repertoire. His colleagues in the trio are 'molto simpatico' and the ensemble and phrasing are impeccable. Janzer (viola) and Czako (cello) don't quite match Gruimiaux's buttery, seamless sound in their solos, but the overall feeling is one of committed, intense music-making that results in performances that set a bench-mark for future ensembles.

Grumiaux Trio will make you smile........2000-01-25
I have first met withe Grumiaux Trio when I randomly bught vol.12 of Philips' "the best of the complete mozart edition". Now that I kenw I like their playing, I bought "Beethoven: The Complete String Trios". This is a digitally remastered recording from 1967/68. While the sound is not as sharp as in a digital recording, it is remarkably clear and noise free, thus anabeling an enjoyable listening. As for the preformance: The Grumiaux Trio play with happy spirit and joy, making these early beethoven works idial music for the early hours of the day (allthough I admit I'v missed a few sleeping hours, for once I start listening to these CDs I can't stop, no mater how late it gets:) It was noted that some times Arthur Grumiaux's violin, shades the other members of the trio. Great chamber music should be a dialog between equals, even if the violin is the leader. Still this is a wanderfull set of CD's, that i can only recomand.

Often expressive and dramatic, at times a little plodding and not too concerned with architectural coherence.......2006-08-14
In the 6th volume of its complete traversal of Schubert's compositions for string quartet on Naxos, the Kodaly Quartet brings together the great quartet opus 161, one of the last works of Schubert's desperately short life and one of his most poignant compositions, and an early rarity, written when he was 16, the 5 German Dances D. 90. The latter is written in a typically "gallant" style, with no great depth but full of charm. But the big nut on this CD is of course the 15th quartet.
In the first movement "Allegro molto moderato", the Kodaly Quartet is quite dramatic, very attentive to the movement diverse moods, from harrowing vehemence to hushed mystery, and nicely retains the dance-like lilt of the second theme; there is a price to pay, however, in the multiplication of tempo transitions, none of them prescribed by Schubert ; one senses musicians interested in immediate dramatic impact rather than architectural coherence. The second movement "Andante un poco moto" is taken by the Kodaly quartet at a very deliberate, not very "motorized" tempo (almost as slow as the Quartetto Italiano in their recording from 1976), making it sound more like an adagio in plaintive tone, almost a funeral march, with accents that evoke not so much cries of revolt or pain as moans; the approach is effective in its own way, but it is not exactly what Schubert wrote. And here again, in the more animated passages, the Kodalys do not hesitate to perceptibly accelerate tempo; Quartetto Italiano was more consistent in that respect.
Under the Kodaly's bows, the Scherzo's "Allegro vivace" (3rd movement) is not particularly vivacious, but nonetheless sufficiently light and full of bounce, as befits this musical invention which suggests the bumblebee's flight or the butterfly's flutter (and the elve's dance will do, too). The middle trio however is rather mawkish, and again the Kodalys imperceptibly speed up their tempo in the second part. Their Finale is somewhat disappointing, due to a tempo that is too deliberate to evoke the race to the abyss that others conjure (Gidon Kremer and friends on Sony take as much time to get through the movement - but with the repeat) and, while the ensemble's tone production until then had been not exceptional but unexceptionable, the 1st violin becomes a bit sour in its upper registers.
Not an exceptional version then, but at that price one that remains very acceptable.
A Fine Budget Version of Schubert's Last String Quartet.......2005-06-25
Schubert's 15th and last string quartet is one of his most important works. It was written between the 20th and the 30th of June 1826 (Schubert died in 1828, when he was only 31 years old). This quartet is an incredibly masterful display of emotional depth, extraordinary harmonic progressions, and sheer rhythmic impetus.
The first movement opens in a very direct fashion - it lacks the usual formal introduction. There are some ethereal soft echo effects here from the cello, accompanied by tremolos in the upper strings. Schubert knew he was dying at the time he wrote this music, and it is a very moving mixture of defiance, anguish and resignation. The second movement is a songful and serene night piece that is disturbed by two violent outbursts. Again the cello plays a very important part here, introducing the first plaintive motif and repeating the songful theme after each outburst. The scherzo, which is based on a quavering figure that is interspersed with some short spiccato themes, has been likened to a dance of elves. The finale was once described by writer J. A. Westrup as "a mad rondo, violent in rhythm and wild in harmony." Abrupt alternations between major and minor lead to some very unexpected harmonic progressions - this is Schubert at his most creative and audacious.
This budget stereo Naxos recording by the Kodaly Quartet concludes its survey of Schubert's string quartets. I feel this is the finest single-disc stereo version, and the inclusion of the lovely German Dances as a filler makes this CD a most attractive purchase. I certainly prefer the warm, mellow playing here by the Kodaly to the brash and rather hard-boiled Sony CD account by the Juilliard Quartet (I absolutely love the latter's Bartok & Schoenberg recordings, but they tend to be too assertive in Schubert). Likewise, I think the Kodaly's account is far better than the Lindsay Quartet's (ASV), which has some dreadfully out of tune playing (I have weeded both the Juilliard and the Lindsay recordings).
To my ears, the main stereo competition here is the extremely polished Quartetto Italiano (available in an inexpensive Philips "two-fer" of Schubert's four last quartets). While I prefer the latter, I'm also keeping the Kodaly (the German Dances, while brief, are pretty indispensable). If memory serves, an orchestrated version of the first Dance was used in a highly-effective way with other Schubert works (especially the Piano Trio #1) in Stanley Kubrick's brilliant film "Barry Lyndon."
However, this Vol. 6 of the Kodaly Quartet's Schubert is the only one in their series that I will be keeping. That's not to say that the series is in any way unattractive. But Schubert's first seven quartets are fairly early, immature works, and I can't see owning multiple versions of them. And there are simply better versions of the later quartets. All 15 quartets were once available on mono Westminster LPs from the early 1950's (in excellent sound). These were performed by the wonderful Vienna Konzerthaus Quartet (Kamper, Titze, Weiss and Kvarda), all of whose members were players in the Vienna Philharmonic under conductor Wilhelm Furtwangler. This remains my "desert island" version of the complete quartets (they have been issued on CDs in Japan on the MCA label).
The great Busch String Quartet (Adolf Busch, Gosta Andreassen, Karl Doktor, and Hermann Busch) recorded the "ne plus ultra" account of #8, a superb #14 (unfortunately, due to 78 rpm constraints, the latter is shorn of all the repeats), and #15. These are available, along with the Fantasie in C (Busch & Serkin) and the Piano Trio #1, on a Pearl CD set.
My personal favorites in the last three Schubert quartets:
#13. The Vienna Konzerthaus captures like no other ensemble the intensely Brucknerian span of this gorgeous work.
#14. In chronological order, my all-time favorites of this stunning masterpiece are the ORIGINAL 1927 Budapest Quartet (Emil Hauser, Joseph Roisman, Istvan Ipolyi, and Harry Son) on a hard to find Novello CD; the 1927/28 Capet Quartet (a reading of extraordinary spiritual purity on Biddulph); the heartbreakingly beautiful 1936 Busch Quartet (Pearl); the c. 1950 Vienna Konzerthaus (a uniquely warm and gemutlich account on Westminster LP and Japanese MCA CD); and the gloriously well-played c.1951 Hollywood Quartet (mine is on a Capitol LP).
#15. The Busch and the Vienna Konzerthaus are both supremely eloquent here, but my ultimate allegiance is to the latter's inimitable warmth and lyricism.
All of those versions are, of course, in monophonic sound. For a single CD version of #15 in good stereo sound, I feel this effort by the Kodaly Quartet is clearly the one to own.

A Beautiful Conclusion to This Series.......2005-06-25
The Kodály Quartet has been slowly recording all of Schubert's string quartets and with this Volume 6 we come to the end. The CD contains Schubert's last finished quartet, No. 15 in G Major, D. 887, Op. 161, and the disc is filled out by Five German Dances, D. 90. The Kodály Quartet has more or less become the Naxos label's house quartet, having recorded large chunks of the central quartet literature for them. This is good, because not only are they a wonderful quartet, they are non-interventionist without being bland. String quartet playing is hard work and requires much slow, thoughtful study on the part of the players. It is to the Kodály's credit that they have taken a slow and steady course through the Schubert quartets, some of which they surely had never played before; the early apprentice works in particular are almost never played and yet the Kodály played them not only with musicianly respect but with love and admiration.
When we get to Schubert's last quartet, though, we have an undisputed masterpiece that every quartet worthy of the name plays. Its opening movement is one of the most marvelous (and harmonically complicated) works he ever composed. It takes fifteen minutes to play and works its magic in subtle ways. For instance, when it comes time for the recapitulation the first theme is changed from minor to major, and the second from major to minor. Had anyone ever thought to do that before? The minor key cello theme that opens the Andante is one of Schubert's patented melodies; it almost tears your heart out with its gentle pathos. In the Scherzo we are in familiar elfin Schubertian territory that evolves into ländlerisch folk dance rhythms in the Trio, gentle, not turbulent. And this prepares us for the high spirits of the Finale, a rowdy tarantella. The Kodály play this quartet with a maximum of relish, a minimum of gratuitous edge. They make this complex quartet what it is really meant to be, a thoroughly comprehensible compendium of 1826 quartet writing, easy on the ear and rewarding for the analytic mind. This is a beautiful performance worthy to stand beside any of the earlier treasured recordings (Busch, Alban Berg, Quartetto Italiano) this marvelous quartet has been afforded.
The disc is rounded out by five German Dances written when Schubert was sixteen. They are notable for their rough good humor. No. 4 lasts a mere 50 seconds but is infectious enough to have this listener up and stomping his feet in an enthusiastic approximation of dancing. The Kodály's approach is, fittingly, more rough and ready in these pieces than in the subtleties of the 15th Quartet, evidence that they are really entering into the spirit of the music itself rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Although with a timing of only 59+ minutes, this CD is heartily recommended for its marvelous musicmaking.

Heartfelt rendition! .......2006-11-16
Among the annals of the Russian way of thinking and feeling there is a special menaing of the word grief. As a matter of fact, Tarkovsky stated once, the febrile Russian grief is impossible to be understood in case you are not from that country. I guess I feel due my great-grandfather was Russian, and perhaps this circumstance has brought me so near respect to this work.
That's why these Elegiac Trios have such intense emotive sentiment I have not known about any other similar homage loaded of such profundity and profound emotional profile.
The Op 9 is by itself a work of a very young composer but the level of expression makes us to forget all the technical problems you migh argue in favor or vice versa.
The Beaux Arts Trio made a splensid reading about this emtoive homage in Tchaikovsky's memory.
Go for these invaluable performances.
Intimate, personal Rachmaninov.......2006-02-02
Not a huge writer of chamber works (perhaps in part a sad side effect of having to hit the road as a concert performer after escaping post-Revolution USSR penniless), these two trios provide a more intimate look at Rachmaninov than his large scale orchestral works always do.
Like the other reviewer, this particular CD was my introduction to these trios. It was also my introduction to the Beaux Arts Trio, and the double introduction was a wonderful one.
The statement about death and loss they make is not quite detached, but indeed introspective throughout, though that introspection is in different levels and expressed in different ways. The Beaux Arts delivers a fine performance here. That's perhaps aided by this long-time trio being less "explosive" or hyperkinetic than some modern groupings; they bring a refinement of style to these trios that suits them well.
The performance quality is enhanced by very good recording quality; the sound is neither flat nor overmiked.
With ethos, pathos and logos........2005-05-16
These two Piano Trios are among Rachmaninoff's lesser known works, but not deservedly so. Rachmaninoff's major orchestral works (especially for piano and orchestra) tend to so overpower listeners of his music that - instead of seeking out other works by the Russian master - they search instead for other performances of their favourite works (I'm guilty of this as well, so I'm not meaning to cast any stones here).
The Elegiac Trios were composed in 1893 and 1894 as a tribute to the memory of Rachmaninoff's mentor, composer Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky, who had tragically commited suicide by drinking unboiled water, tainted with cholera bacteria. They reflect the obvious sorrow Rachmaninoff must have felt at the loss of his friend, and are the most somber pieces to emerge from his pen. Like Isle of the Dead, the subject of death is rendered with drama and pathos. Yet unlike Isle, the trios treat death in a more wistful and less defiant tone; the trios are more of a eulogy than the overwhelming catharsis of Die Toteninsel.
The Beaux Arts Trio is more than up to the task of performing this music of passion and loss. Founded in 1955, the Beaux Arts is one of the most renowned of chamber music ensembles. The First Trio is a one movement piece, which beautifully and energetically encapsulises all the emotions that Rachmaninoff clearly intended. They especially evince the piece's depth and maturity (which would be surprising for any other composer of twenty years of age, save the dark, enigmatic Rachmaninoff).
The Second Trio is a massive composition, written in three movements, with a playing time of 47 minutes, quite long by standards of chamber music, and longer than any of Rachmaninoff's works for piano and orchestra (including the unedited version of the Third Concerto). Both trios are anchored by the forthright pianism of Pressler, whose range conveys the whole palette of Rachmaninovian emotions, at times forceful, at others gentle and compassionate, yet always persuasively. Cohen's violin imparts the life themes with dignity, with an unsettling mixture of dolce and con funebre. Greenhouse's cello is warm, and full of vibrant colour and texture, yet always reminding the listener death's inevitability.
As a unit, the members of the Beaux Arts execute the piece with all the polish, fortitude and panache of a Special Forces platoon. Fortunately for this listener, this recording was my introduction to the Elegiac Trios, for you can hear the care and commitment that the musicians have for this work. Like all virtuoso ensembles, the Beaux Arts relate the piece with individuality, allowing the listener to hear each instrument discretely. Yet, what separates the Beaux Arts from lesser groups is their ability to communicate the music with one voice and singularity of purpose.
The recording itself by Philips has a very warm and three-dimensional sound; this is one of the few CDs I own where I don't have to turn the treble down much. It features a full frequency range, allowing the listener to soak in every nuance and subtlety, yet does not possess an annoyingly vast dynamic range that causes you to run for the volume knob every five minutes.
To sum up: This recording will imbue you with sorrow for Tchaikovsky's passing, a great respect for Rachmaninoff's gesture and pleasure for your ears, soul and mind.

In the main, the youthful Beethoven chamber music collaborations between Daniel Barenboim, Pinchas Zuckerman, and the late Jacqueline du Pré are characterized by broad, liberally fluctuating tempos, ripeness of tone, and a tendency to place expression ahead of stylistic considerations. Zuckerman's sweet vibrato, for instance, seems misplaced in Beethoven's terse, combative syntax (the earlier trios and violin sonatas, for example). Likewise, du Pré's throbbing solo lines impose a late-Romantic patina on the music that some listeners will find more appropriate to Arensky or Glazunov. More often than not, Daniel Barenboim's piano provides the decisive voice, by way of setting tempos and effecting transitions.
While the leaner, more economically expressive Abegg Trio (Tacet) and Vienna Piano Trio (Nimbus) Beethoven Trio offerings better reflect the composer's headlong brio and nervous energy, the Barenboim-Zuckerman-Du Pré team oozes sheer musicality and involvement in every bar. For this reason, one might well prefer Zuckerman and Barenboim's overwrought rapport in the Violin Sonatas to the violinist's tighter RCA remakes with Marc Neikrug at the piano. Du Pré's tragic illness prevented her and Barenboim from tackling the Cello Sonatas in the studio. Happily, their exciting, communicative live 1970 Edinburgh Festival traversals (plus the variation sets) were broadcast by the BBC and captured in excellent sound. So was a touchingly indulgent Tchaikovsky Trio preserved from one of Du Pré's final concerts, included as both a bonus and a memento. Tully Potter's excellent booklet notes give equal time to music and artists, and rightly discuss the performances in the context of their time. It's good to have these recordings gathered in a budget-priced, space-saving box. --Jed Distler
Customer Reviews:
With minor reservations, "excellent".......2004-05-16
As noted above, this 9 CD set resulted from the youthful collaboration of Barenboim, du Pre (soon to wed Barenboim) and Zukerman. Clearly Barenboim is the driving force. As the info booklet asks: "Would Beethoven have approved of what Barenboim does here? Perhaps not, although he would surely have applauded the young man's courage".
Sadly, du Pre's illness (she had MS, forcing her retirement in 1973 and ultimately causing her untimely death) seriously limited the collaboration. Because her illness prevented a studio recording, the cello sonatas are from 1970 live recordings taped by the BBC. The audience noise is distracting, and I simply cannot understand why the coughs and chair scrapings could not have been edited out.
Barenboim and co really do drag out the slow movements; sometimes to good effect, and sometimes too much in my view. For example, the third movement of the Archduke Trio goes for 12:07 on the Naxos recording but extends to 16:02 here (but this one is still a better rendition).
To fill out the last CD, EMI includes Tchaikovsky's Piano Trio Op 50 (taped from a live performance in Tel Aviv in 1972), which is not in the same league as Beethoven's (but I guess they had to do something with the space).
My main complaint is that the thick 3-language info booklet is devoted entirely to the history of the performers and includes not a single word about the music itself!
That said, I am still very glad that I bought this set.

These delicious aperitifs by Serge Rachmaninov for piano trio are not quite minor efforts, but they are the product of Rachmaninov's youth. All were composed by the time Rachmaninov was 21, and he wrote no other chamber works after 1900--which is a shame, because he was good at it. The most famous of these works, the Piano Trio No. 1 in G minor, is recognizably the work of a Romantic genius. Its main theme is as memorable as anything Rachmaninov ever wrote. Perhaps less memorable is the Piano Trio No. 2 in D minor. This is a more dolorous affair and exhibits, at least in the role of the piano, elements of Chopin the young composer had studied. The Moscow Rachmaninov Trio takes to these works with clear affection, even if the studio ambience is a bit muddled on Trio No. 2. Still, this disc is to be recommended, especially for the filler, two works for cello and piano and violin and piano. Very nice indeed. --Paul Cook
Customer Reviews:
Good performances, plus a couple of rarities.......2001-05-05
Contrary to what the reviewer Paul Cook says, the Piano Trio #1 in G minor is not the more famous of the two works. It was not published until 1947 (it was composed in 1892), and it is not clear what caused Rachmaninov to compose it (it's all in the liner notes, and books about the composer). It's a powerful, short work, and is very much in the Rachmaninov mold. The Piano Trio #2 in D minor IS the more famous of the two trios, and was composed in "memory of a great artist"--Tchaikovsky, who was a great supporter of Rachmaninov's works. The Trio #2 is emotional and passionate, longer in construction, with a difficult piano part that tends to overshadow the strings. But, it is a memorable work, and it's a pity that Rachmaninov did not write more chamber music.
The Moscow Rachmaninoff Trio do a credible job performing these pieces, but the acoustics are sometimes not the best, and the sound is muffled and muddy at times. Also, they tend to rein in the passion at times when it is most needed.
The Two Pieces for violin and piano, Op. 6, are a real treat, as they have not, to my knowledge, been recorded previously. Tsinman and Yampolsky work together well, and the violin sings above the difficult piano part. It's a shame Rachmaninov never wrote a longer work for violin and orchestra--he clearly had a feeling for the instrument.
In all, a good disc, but for just the trios alone, I would go with the recording made by the Beaux Arts Trio some years ago--extremely emotional and passionate, but not over-the-top.

Uniformly Excellent.......2003-08-19
Another example of a hiccup by my computer or mouse - not sure which one - and multiple reviews were submitted. Sorry about that.
This is the third volume of Rheinberger Sonatas by Wolfgang Rubsam and again I am pleased at the quality and technique as well as structural craftsmanship, especially as the later sonatas are approaching the half hour mark. Just learning the hundreds of thousands of notes is an accomplishment in itself but sculpturing the long pieces into a single unit is perhaps an even greater effort.
In a sense, the composer assists in this effort by introducing and reintroducing themes. The writing is now becoming dense in parts - like Vierne's sober, thick First Organ Symphony. But Rheinberger is too much a melodist to become infatuated with so-called "walls of sound". Despite the intensity, he repeatedly emerges with absolutely beautiful melodies that literally sing to the listener.
The Eighth is another somber work and the technical demands of the final movement (Passacaglia) is especially noteworthy. The Ninth (in B flat Minor) alludes to an almost Classical tone in parts yet explores various Romantic realms at ease. This is the longest and most mature of the first nine. It is extremely original without departing from the strict confines of a strucure the composer apparently relishes.
The Trios are miniature tone poems with a German, Romantic appeal. Some are gems, others are simply melodic

Good choice!.......2002-01-26
This recording is a good addition to any collection of organ recordings. Rubsam is certainly a well-respected performer, and this recording is no exception. Rheinberger is a composer well-known to organists, and while there are certainly many other higher profile recordings of his works to be had, this is a good recording for half the price of others.

Album Description
Tavros Records announces the release of an exciting CD recording - Rachmaninoff's Elegiaque Piano Trios, performed by Korean pianist Yung Wook Yoo, Russian violinist Julia Sakharova, and from Iceland, cellist Margret Arnadottir.
The CD is unusual for its intense subject material. Rachmaninoff was 20 years old when Tchaikovsky died of cholera, and the news plunged him into an anguish that he could only express in a way he knew how - by writing music. The D-minor Trio Élégaique, an elegy to Tchaikovsky, is an expression of that grief.
Pianist Yung Wook Yoo, who in 1998 won the Grand Prize and Gold Medal of the XIII Paloma O'Shea Santander International Piano Competition, has embarked on a concert career that now takes him around the world. For a recent solo recital in Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater, Washington Post reviewer Ronald Broun wrote; "Yoo has a big technique that lets his imagination roam free
" Of his New York debut, New York Times reviewer Allan Kozinn wrote, "
(Yoo) is a mature player with interesting ideas and the means to convey them
not content to dazzle his listeners with speed and volume, but sought ways to bring out the music hidden within the gymnastics."
Violinist Julia Sakharova, a scholarship student at Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, has won awards in this country and in her native Russia for her passionate playing. A review in the French publication, "L'Alsace," describes "an incredible temperament, very fine sensitivity, remarkable colors."
Cellist Margret Arnadottir, of Reykjavik, Iceland, is a student at The Juilliard School, and has appeared as soloist with the Iceland Symphony Orchestra. The Tavros recording emphasizes her ability for passionate, insightful interpretation.
The Rachmaninoff Elegiaque Piano Trios is a 64-minute CD containing Piano Trio Elegiaque in D minor, Op. 9, and Piano Trio Elegiaque No. 1 in G minor.

Two Thumbs Up!!!.......2004-12-29
This is the performance that Rachmaninoff could only have dreamed of. Russian violinist Julia Sakharova, Icelandic Cellist Margret Arnadottir, and Korean Pianist Yung Wook Yoo combine their talents to create a sound which will echo in the depths of your soul; sometimes haunting, sometimes uplifting, and always captivating.
Mr.Yoo's technical expertise with the piano is surpassed only by his deep understanding of the feelings Rachmaninoff conveys in his composition. Ms.Arnadottir, similarly, handles her instrument with elegance and grace. The deep and rich sound of her cello fills up the whole CD. Finally the third person of this musical trinity, Ms.Sakharova, completes the masterpiece with the passionate, poignant, and intimate sound of her violin.
The Elegiaque Piano Trios recorded by Tavros will leave you mesmerized by beauty. You will hear three dedicated musicians who emphasize passion and understanding over the obsession with technical perfection so common in the world of Classical music today. It takes Romantics to properly play Romantic music and Tavros chose the right musicians. Rachmaninoff would be pleased.
Real Music.......2004-04-06
I find it very refreshing to hear real musical talent from such young artist. As an arts critique, I was mostly struck by the deeply fulfilling voice of Julia Sakharova's violin playing, which is clearly definitive of the Russian School. She demonstrates unabashed artistry, and is genuine and giving enough to not only serve us the soul of Rachmaninoff, but her soul as well.
--Well Done!
2003/2004 Penguin Guide gives this record high rating!.......2004-02-15
The 2003/2004 edition of the prestigious PENGUIN Guide to Compact Discs & DVDs (Published by Penguin Books: London, New York, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, South Africa) evaluates classical recordings with one to three stars, and gave this Tavros recording THREE stars ("An outstanding performance and recording in every way").
From: Rachmaninov Chamber Music listings (p. 1021):
Trios elégiaques Nos. 1 in G minor., Op. 8; 2 in D min., Op. 9.
*** Tavros EPT 4516. Yoo, Sakharova, Arnadóttir.
An outstanding new coupling of the paired Rachmaninov Trios elégiaques from this impressive group of young musicians - Korean pianist Yung Wook Yoo, Russian violinist Julia Sakharova, with the warm-toned Icelandic cellist, Margarét Arnadóttir. They make a fine team and give performances that are as passionate as they are lyrically spontaneous. The long elliptical first movement of Op. 8 is admirably shaped, and the pianist emerges with special distinction in the following even more extended set of variations. The D minor Trio is an elegy for Tchaikovsky and its atmosphere of Russian melancholy (the composer's marking is lento lugubre) is richly caught, notably by the cellist. The recording is vividly up front - on one occasion the bass end of the piano is made to seem right on top of the listener - but the performances are so committedly vivid and alive that this debut CD must be welcomed with enthuasiasm."
Agonisingly beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-01-21
It is so rare to hear music like this, played with such passion and depth in this the age of mass production and indifference. On hearing the instrumentalists enter one by one, layering texture upon texture, slowly weaving together the immensely colourful fabric of this piece, I was staggered not only at the sheer beauty of the music but with the illustration of the talents that these musicians have. The depth of understanding that the performers posses allows them to portray the psychological insight that Rachmaninoff himself had into the enigmatic themes of love, pain and human fallibility. I would reccomend this recording to anyone as it allows all, even those who are less familiar with the classical and romantic genres to be enveloped into the music and for the longest time, transported into the inner depths of Rachmaninoff's emotions. It is truly beautiful, a must buy for any who know what the meaning of true beauty is to the ears.
WOW.......2002-01-04
This cd is a rare and wonderful discovery - amazing depth and sophistication from such youthful talent. Brilliant! A must have!!!!

OVERRATED and OVERPRICED..........2007-07-11
.
I hate to give a bad rating to anyone who's endeavoring to produce fine art; however, in this case I've just gotta say this set is overrated and insanely overpriced. What's the problem? The "dream team" players just don't gel: they all play like soloists: they're "going for themselves" and not realizing Beethoven's conception--especially in his spectacular but little heard Op. 9 string Trios.
'Nuff said.
