Editorial Reviews
Bernard Jacobson, Fanfare columnist
"Vonk and his accomplished St. Louis orchestra give us a civilized view of Beethoven, and I suspect their performances will yield increasing rewards on repeated hearing."

Beethoven Collection.......2007-05-14
I just got this for my brother-in-law as a gift and he loves it!
Amazing!.......2007-01-24
Having Beethoven's Symphonies in one, very affordable, set is heaven! The recordings are clear and crisp. Each symphony is truly a masterpiece from the very soft tones of the woodwinds to the thundering sounds of horns. It is amazing to listen to certain passages of Beethoven and realize the genius and otherworldliness of his talent.
An excellent introduction to beethoven's symphonies........2007-01-11
The sound is excellent, and the musicianship and conducting is excellent.
Beethoven Collection.......2006-07-23
Beethoven is my favorite composer. No matter how upset or tired I am, his music calms me down, just like a big, gentle hug.
But the cheap CDs have poor quality. And the good ones are too expensive for me. When I found this collection, with such a good price on Amazon.com, I couldn't believe it. Shortly after I purchased it, I received it. The quality is great. I am enjoying it. Thank you
Hoda
Top music!.......2006-07-19
Everything else you can get over, but classical music like Beethoven is stuff you just can't get sick of. A whole collection of Beethoven's Symphonies for such a small price, Wow!. Classical music is so relaxing and peaceful that you can't go wrong with spending time chillin out to this pure classic. The symphonies are great but after this you've got to go get the sonata's etc and I guarantee you won't be dissapointed!
Think about it, they don't call it classical for nothing.

Customer Reviews:
CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08
They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.
Do not Buy.......2007-02-21
I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.
Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30
We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.
Seek better versions.......2006-12-09
If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.
It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27
It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.
Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.
It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.
To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

Customer Reviews:
Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13
This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.
classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01
This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.
Excellent!.......2007-03-08
A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Album Description
The process of choosing music for a wedding day can certainly be a daunting process for any couple. There are many choices and the questions can be endless. Traditional music or something off the beaten path? Will your Mom cry (and not in a good way) if you do not come down the aisle to the traditional Wedding March from Wagner, or are you eager to try something new? This collection is designed to give the bridal couple some key pointers to navigate the world of classical music for their wedding day. The package includes over 3 1/2 hours of music on 3 CDs for all portions of the wedding service, all from the Naxos classical label (known for high-quality recordings at inexpensive prices). Wedding day favorites are there, along with new discoveries and tunes you may have never considered for a wedding. All pieces are hand selected by professional wedding musicians and consultants. As a bonus, the 20 page booklet will lead you through the process of choosing music, from hiring musicians to sample programs. Everything you need to create your own unique personal wedding soundtrack.
Customer Reviews:
GREAT WEDDING MUSIC!.......2007-01-24
I used these CD's for my wedding, and I was so happy I did. You need to buy this CD if you like having a traditional wedding! :)
Good Music.......2006-07-05
I bought these CDs for my wedding, in ceremony and reception. Also, when I created my own wedding video, I used it as background music.
A very complete selection of ceremony music!.......2005-02-02
I am getting married in several months and we couldn't decide what music we wanted at our wedding ceremony. This three disk compilation reminded us of all the great ones- including new options we hadn't thought about. I really enjoyed hearing the organ and strings versions of the songs. If you're someone who hears a classical or baroque piece of music, but can't remember the name or the precise tune, this is a must-have to jog your memory and trigger the tear ducts!
Comprehensive Classical Selection.......2004-04-15
I searched all over for a CD set that had a somewhat comprehensive list of classical selections that are traditionally played at weddings. When I found this 3 CD set, I was very pleased. It contains 61 works from almost as many composers. This set might not contain the "best recording ever" of each of the selections, however it is very well done and the quality is very good. I used it primarily to choose the pieces that I wanted to have played by the church organist, and so the actual recordings were more for my consumption rather than for use in the ceremony/reception itself. However, I would not have hestitated to use the CD's in the wedding itself if needed. The book inside includes a list of suggested songs for various wedding styles (formal, outside, morning, etc.). From the classical neophyte to the seasoned classical music expert, this CD set will meet if not exceed expectations.
Just one note..........2003-06-07
I have not heard this album, so I cannot rate it as a whole. (The form made me include a rating, but disregard that.) However, I want to point out that track 36, the Pie Jesu from Gabriel Faure's Requiem is - well, from a requiem, a mass for the dead. The Pie Jesu is a lovely, gentle movement, and it has a beautiful and pure sound that does seem to fit the mood of a wedding. The Latin words, however, mean "Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them everlasting rest," where "them" refers to the dead.
Beautiful, but perhaps not so suitable for a wedding.

Without the gorgeous visuals, the soundtrack to Fantasia/2000 is nothing more than a collection of some of classical music's greatest moments. But what moments they are! Conductor James Levine and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra provide new (though hardly groundbreaking) arrangements for these classical music warhorses. Piano virtuoso Yefim Bronfman joins in to record the Allegro section of Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No. 2 (if you like this track, check out Bronfman playing the entire piece on his 1999 disc with the Los Angeles Philharmonic), and soprano Kathleen Battle lends a high note to the climax of Elgar's Pomp and Circumstance. We also get the classic Sorcerer's Apprentice from the original (and now out-of-print) Fantasia soundtrack. Performed by Philharmonia Orchestra, the Paul Dukas composition still steals the show. The original movie may have been a flop, but with any luck Fantasia/2000 will turn some young minds on to classical music, especially with such inspired choices as Respighi's Pines of Rome. Like what you hear? Remember, these are just excerpts and you really owe it to yourself to hear the works in their entirety--slow movements and all. That said, whether you're a Disney fan, an IMAX aficionado, or just a classical-lover-to-be, you can't go wrong with this disc. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
Great for kids with Autism!.......2007-04-10
As a parent of profoundly autistic twin boys, this CD is so calming and I never tire of listening to it in the car. This CD on their Walkman helps get them through loud basketball games or sensory overload events at school. They LOVE "Rhapsody in Blue!"
Fantasia 2000.......2006-12-30
I have most of these pieces on other CD's, and I mostly got this one for 'Rhapsody in Blue'. If you don't own 'Firebird' and don't feel like owning the entire thing, then get this--it's got the highlights. Overall the selection is varied. You have probably forgotten that 'Pomp and Circumstance' is a real piece, and not just a graduation death march--this CD will remind you, with its very wise summary of the very extensive five marches by Elgar. This is certainly a lot more interesting than most classical highlights CD's.
Great pieces of classical music!.......2005-11-16
This is a really lovely collection of exhilarating and intriguing music pieces. Fantasia helped spawn my interest in classical music. The animation is beautiful in the movie but it's the music which makes it happen.
Fantastic! .......2005-07-18
My favorite piece of music ever is "Rhapsody in Blue" and I've managed to collect quite a few versions of it over the years. This is the absolute best recording of "Rhapsody in Blue" I have ever heard! I'm listening to it on a constant loop tonight. The entire record is great as is the other soundtrack from "Fantasia." The movie is a wonderful way to get kids exposed to classical music without them even realizing it! Worked on me when I was a kid. Once again, the Mouse works his magic!
One song along would make this worth buying.......2004-11-21
In my opinion, this CD is worth it just for "Rhapsody in Blue," but there are seven other great tracks, as well. Music like this spans generations; it's essentially timeless in its beauty and ability to put a smile on your face. Great stuff. Yes, there may only be eight tracks on this disc, but four of them are nine minutes or longer, so you're not being cheated out of anything. I'm not a steadfast Disney fan, but they really know how to pick classical music for their masterpiece.

Customer Reviews:
Took a nap during labor.......2007-01-16
I used the first CD in this collection (Alpha) to assist me during the labor and delivery of our daughter. I put it on our ipod and listened to it over and over during the labor process. I actually managed a light nap during active labor and had very little pain throughout the process. It that doesn't tell you that it keeps you relaxed and able to meditate, I don't know whatelse might convince you. The recording is great, the music lovely, and it does what it claims to do. I highly recommend it!
Awesome!.......2006-03-17
These really work! Ever wonder why listening to classical music may make you more up-tight than relaxing you? Here's the reason...
Induces great relaxation, pair with noise-cancelling headphones and sleep on plane........2005-12-30
So far I have only really used the relaxation CD, which works amazingly well. I have been flying more red-eyes lately in part because I know I can sleep on the plane from as soon as I get on. However, I have always slept pretty well on airplanes!
I keep forgetting to try out the rest of the CD collection.
Recommended for first rate relaxation and sleep!.......2005-06-06
These cds sound like simple classical music, but they do indeed assist you to enter different states of mind. For best effect, wear stereo headphones. But even without, you will find it easier to relax, sleep and meditate. If you don't like classical, the Brainwaves Suite has a new age/environmental sound.
Worth the listen.......2004-10-17
My curiousity was well rewarded when I first listened to these four CDs. The symphonic music is seamlessly recorded, accented with tone notations that are easy on the ear and peaceful on the mind. This set is at the office, on the iPod and the home computer, and loaned to others on a regular basis. They have flavored prayer services and supported pastoral conversations. Make good presents, too. Worried about subliminal suggestion? Well, if clearer thinking and thoughtful reflection is subliminal thinking, then you will get the message each time you listen to these recordings. Other recordings by Dr. Thompson deliver just as these do.

Very entertaining.......2007-03-06
I can't compare this 3rd Symphony to other classic recordings, as I have not heard them. However I can say that it is performed seemingly flawlessly. The french horns deserve some kind of medal for their part in the 4th movement!
Mostly wonderful for the playing.......2007-01-03
NOTE: Please ignore an undue number of negative responses. They are from an anonymous stalker.
I expected Dzell's Eroica to be taut and swift, with rather thin recorded sound (he never got the best sonics from Epic Records), and absolute orchestral precision. All those things are here. One day Sony must get around to remastering Szell's Sixties Beethoven cycle. It's much more disciplined that Bruno Walter's with the Columbia Sym. but less stirring than Bernstein's with the NY Phil.
Now for a confession: I didn't listen to this account of the Eroica with much interest. Contrary to other reviewers, Szell's interpretation isn't sweeping, vehment, or (to my ears) powerful. It's correct and classical. If you preefer such an approach, which is about as faar from Furtwangler as one can get, this CD will please you. I kept missing dozens of opportunities for expression, dynamic contrast, and drama. The funeral march, for intance, is particularly dry-eyed and at points chirpy. The Eighth fares better from Szell's classicism, being a lighter, more 'feminine' work. But even here, amid all the precision, one wants some humor, a sense of high spirits that never emerges. My four stars is an average between five for execution and three for inspiration.
My Desert Island Eroica.......2006-02-04
While a nice little symphony, you don't typically hear heated debates about what the best version of the 8th is. However, if you flip through the relevant pages of this website, you will see reviews where people line up in favor of their favorite version of the magnificent 3rd, known as the "Eroica" symphony. I have heard many wonderful versions of Eroica, but this is my desert island Eroica. The wonderful range of colors, the precision of the orchestra, the control and vision of the conductor transform Eroica from a symphony into an experience. Don't believe me? Listen to the first movement about 6 minutes into the track. The staccato chords getting progressively quieter has never been played more precisely and perfectly than on this CD. It sounds like the distant echo of a war call. That's just one example of the beauty of this performance. And even if you already own 10 other versions of Eroica, the disc is so cheap that there is no reason not to own this one. I wholeheartedly recommend this CD to anyone who loves Beethoven.
Conservative Eroica, Brilliant 8th.......2006-02-01
There are many ways to play the Eroica. Some conductors like Bernstein and Rattle play it very fast with lots of excitement. Others like it slower, emphasizing its lyrical beauty (Walter and Klemperer). Szell takes a more conservative approach. It is not really fast or slow. The tempo is just right but I find it just a tad on the dull side. The 8th, on the other hand, is just perfect. And in the scherzo, Szell has the trumpets play with tremendous brilliance. Most conductors want the trumpets to blend in with the rest of the orchestra. Not Szell, he allows them to really dominate and I personally love the effect. Good conductors play the music as written, great conductors add little touches to give the music character. Szell was truly a great conductor.
My favourite 3.......2005-10-27
A tough and relatively fast 3. I agree comparable with Toscanini with sound infinitely better. Tempi crucial in this work and should be brisk. Even in the second movement the momentum must not be lost (c.f. Klemperer's two plodding but perversely popular EMI versions). Sound obviously not up to modern standards but still good and not impairing the enjoyment at all. Finale is extremely exciting. First movement also brisk ( thankfully). Well played as a whole. Overall just about ideal. I think this is a 1950,s recording (please forgive me if this is inaccurate). If so I have also 50's recordings from Kleiber (Decca) Furtwangler (EMI) Toscanini (RCA) and Klemperer (EMI mono and stereo) and I rate Szell just above the Kleiber overall though could recommend either. Interpretatively Toscanini is on a par with Szell but the sound is tragically quite poor with intrusive and very rude coughing at crucial moments. Furtwangler is not bad and both Klemperers are well played with decent sound but tempi so slow as to remove much excitement. Still that is entirely typical of the most overrated conductor of Beethoven of which I am aware and I would not recommend either of his versions.I suppose Szell could also be compared to modern version from Zinman (Arte Nova) but I prefer Szell.

This is a surprisingly fine Beethoven cycle. Herbert Kegel had a reputation as a modern music specialist, and with good reason: He was a certified East German communist intellectual who killed himself shortly after the Berlin Wall came down--perfect for the wilder excesses of the modern German school. But he also had a very idiomatic feel for Beethoven as these objective, tautly rhythmic, and excitingly played performances prove. At super budget price, this set is worth considering. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
Great Beethoven Cycle.......2007-06-20
Most of my music is on LP or I have access thru Rhapsody. I picked these cds up as part of the 10 CD Beethoven Platinum Collection. Kegel does the first 5 discs, the same discs as in the boxed set here.
I am a niggardly (it means frugal on steroids) Scandinavian who is always trying to stretch a nickel into a dollar. Yet, every time I pursue this course, a little voice whispers in my ear, "You get what you pay for." The thrill of bargain hunting is finding a great value at a mere pittance. This results in left brain/right brain nirvana. I picked up the 10 CDs for about $10 and they sound great, especially the Beethoven Symphonies and especially the 9th. They are also very well recorded including excellent db master line levels.
The other great thing about bargain hunting is that if the purchase is a dud, you are only out a pittance! Just about the worst feeling is paying a premium and buying crapola. So, if you do buy these discs and you do not like them as I did, hopefully your wallet will not be emptied.
a fine combination of quality and value.......2005-12-29
This is a fine set of Beethoven symphonies, well played and recorded, except I think the recording level of the ninth is a bit lower than the rest of the symphonies (might just be my ears). You don't get fancy liner notes or fabulous photographs of the orchestral forces, but the performances are quite solid; the best being the opening of the fifth and the chorale finale of the ninth.
THIS SET IS AN ABSOLUTE STEAL.......2005-12-20
The performance of Symphony No. 5 in this set absolutely kicks serious butt- it's the most powerful, driven Fifth I've ever heard- worth the price of the whole set alone!!!! The rest of the CD's are excellent as well, but the Fifth in this set reigns supreme!
Excellent.......2005-09-26
This is an excellent series of recordings. The peak of which, of course, comes in the final CD with the 9th Symphony. The instruments are perfectly mixed so that one section doesn't outweigh another. The solosists are superior. The orchestra is crisp and precise. This is one of the best recordings of the nine symphonies out there. And it's a great value.
Pleasing overall..........2004-07-14
Beethoven's Symphonies are very popular among the classical community, and hence there are many versions and sets to choose from. This box set is wonderful for a classical lover who desires to obtain the complete symphonies, but can't afford to spend a hundred dollars in the process. This is by far not the best performance ever recorded by any means, but overall, it stays close to the music and is very traditional. So if you desire to gain a better appreciation for Beethoven's symphonies, but aren't willing or are unable to spend alot of money doing it, this is the perfect box set for you.

Karl Böhm's Beethoven is, on balance, the best complete cycle available from Deutsche Grammophon. This will come as a surprise to many, given the fact that the label relentlessly promotes performances by Herbert von Karajan (three complete cycles!) and Leonard Bernstein, but for quality of playing, as well as superb sound, these versions are just about unbeatable. And at a "twofer" price, the complete set on three pairs of discs is a terrific value. --David Hurwitz

Master of the Slow and the Beautiful.......2006-06-12
I always love Bohm's meticulous extraction of beautiful music through slow tempi. Other conductors just skip through the nice pieces far too quickly.
You must hear this recording.......2004-08-08
It's very exciting to see Bohm's Beethoven cycle, Mozart recordings and Tristan und Isolde get the praise that it deserves. For those of you who are not familiar with Bohm, take the leap and see why everyone is so excited. You may notice that many of his lower profile recordings (such as this) often have higher ratings then the classics. Bohm is not a surface conductor; many will testify that his recordings did not appeal to them the first few times they listened to them, but suddenly grew on them. If the other reviewers seem to struggle for words, it isn't surprising. Nothing is as amazing as hearing such 'plain' recordings and realizing they are better and more miraculous then the competition. For those of you that have this recording, but don't like it, keep it on the shelf and take it down every now and then and see how it works for you. I will tell you, having the whole cycle, that these three (along with the eroica) are the best of the cycle. The fifth is rather slow at times, and (sadly) it is probably not Bohm's fault, or Beethoven, but the fact that we have grown so used to hearing it that it has to be 'Kleiberized' to make it alive again. I definitely prefer his seventh over others, and as has been attested to, it is one that has to grow with you. The only other recording to recommend is Krips cycle, which unfortunately has all but disappeared from print and public eye. It's certainly not better, but it is interesting to hear a conductor who has a Beethoven sound even more transparent then Bohm's. As for the more recent digital recording of the ninth, you will notice that it has taking a heavy critical slam for its consistently slow tempos. Although I defend the recording, I have to admit this to be the case, and except for the first movement, I would have liked to have seen it taken faster. This recording definitely cannot be recommended too much, and I agree with another reviewer that it is very surprising that DG has not made a greater effort to push this cycle. I have noticed that it has stayed consistenly in print (recently reissued again) and it may be that they know there's more money to be made in selling the recordings individually. Who can say? Whatever the case, buy it!!
Great all around.......2002-11-06
Some have said that Beethoven's odd-numbered symphonies are great and his even ones are only mediocre. Well, here Bohm shows us how great the 6th and 8th symphonies are. Like many have commented, this is one of the best recordings of the 6th out on the market. The "Pastoral" symphony is rich and lush, and Vienna takes you away into the landscape that Beethoven envisioned as he wrote this wonderful work. Great attention to detail that is highly satisfying. In the 8th, Bohm doesn't let up and conducts with such precision as to create a wonderful driving energy that can be felt underlying the piece. Excellent choice of tempi and full rich sound. The 7th is not my favorite of the recordings out there but it is still well done.
The best version of the sixth!.......2001-02-27
Beethoven's sixth is often underappreciated and overlooked. This version will quickly get you to reconsider your opinion if you have dismissed the sixth as "lightweight." The entire symphony is played with exquisite sensitivity. The first two movements, in particular, reveal Beethoven's genius. Bohm gets the orchestra to revel in Beethoven's lush textures. Everying is balanced and played with great delicacy. Bohm's reading of the seventh is quite different than the famous Klieber version. Again, other reviewers have criticized Bohm for being a bit too slow (the only place this is a concern is in his rendering of the fifth). However, Bohm gets a different, though equally satisfying effect from the slower tempo, particularly in the second movement. Bohm gets much more emotional depth out of this movemement than Klieber does. The spirited eighth is every bit as great as Szell's outstanding version with the Cleveland Symphony. In short, this is a "can't miss" cycle. You can't go wrong, and you won't be dissatisfied with Bohm's versions of all nine Beethoven symphonies.
Best Thing I Ever Bought........2001-01-08
I am so utterly charmed by these recordings that it amazes me.
Right away I greatly preferred Bohm's 6th to the few others that I had heard. I wasn't surprised since it appears to be universally admired. With the seventh I was immediately struck by its classical poise vs. say Kleiber's energy and drive, and thought that I needed to quickly acquire several other versions to figure out what "most" conductors thought the approach should be. I thought Solti's digital 7th was good and definitely in the Kleiber camp. Ashkenazy was next: not a carbon-copy but still also in the energy and drive catagory. Then I discovered that if you listen to the Bohm first during the listening session it doesn't seem "too polite" anymore, it sounds utterly convincing, and the others sound impossibly driven in the III and IV, and nowhere near as impressive as a total performance. And that's without even considering aspects of recording quality or tonal balance. Maybe some will think I'm missing it, but I almost can't listen to the others anymore becauce it really sounds like Bohm nailed it. Number 8. I thought I really loved this work after hearing the '62 Karajan and the Edlinger recording from Naxos. Muti and Szell followed. Good and good. Then I heard the Bohm and it was the same thing all over again. "It's so different," I thought, "slow and almost pokey, though the recording sounds great and the balance is very warm and sweet." Then a few nights later I slip on the headphones and it hits me: this is the greatest interpretation of the most absolutely wonderful music I've ever heard. Pure pleasure, perfect, fun fun fun. Now I really can't listen to other versions anymore(and the digital Solti becomes a cruel joke). So I bought the Bohm 3&9 set and can't wait to get the 1,2,4,5 set. I think Beethoven was an entertainer, not just out to impress. Get these disks, they've got beauty and balance and power in the right places.
