Bluegrass isn't filled with tragic stories of early demise, but two of the genre's most tragic figures team up on this exhilarating collection. Flat-picking guitarist Clarence White and fiddle champion Scotty Stoneman died within four months of each other in 1973, leaving precious few recordings behind for us to savor. This prized CD collects a slew of live cuts recorded between 1961 and 1965, when the Colonels were a brash Southern California bluegrass ensemble attacking mountain music with youthful exuberance and astonishing technique. Jerry Garcia went so far as to call Stoneman the "bluegrass Charlie Parker" and it's hard to argue when listening to his whirling fiddle fire; the deified White was already a fluid, formidable force on guitar before incorporating what he learned from master Doc Watson. However, the Colonels were much more than mere virtuosic showboats: they excelled at heartfelt two- and three-part harmony singing (led by Clarence's brother Roland) and were as likely to bust out an age-old gospel number as they were to play a roaring fiddle tune, bluegrass standard, or even a jazz staple like "Sheik of Araby." --Marc Greilsamer

Sure, Clarence White is extarordinary as a picker, with all the other cats in this assemblage more than pretty good. The middle section of the CD, with some old-timey gospel gems, is a treasure. These guys are so relaxed with their sound, not playing every lead just to impress everybody, but to give feel to the tunes. I have become really enamored of the style where the group operates around one microphone. the sound of the instruments as they "dance" in and out makes it a visual as well as audio pleasure. These guys are flat out great at this style of performing. A hearty recommendation to pick this thing up. Experience this short-lived, but powerful force!

Album Description

The Hollywood Blue Flames began life in 1975 as The Hollywood Fats Band, led by guitar phenomenon Michael "Hollywood Fats" Mann, and featuring what was arguably the best traditional blues line-up this side of 1954 - the multi-talented Al Blake on harmonica and vocals, legendary bassist Larry Taylor from Canned Heat, veteran drummer Richard Innes, and featuring Lloyd Glenn protege Fred Kaplan on piano. Sadly, Fats passed away unexpectedly in 1986, and the band members all went on to other successful musical ventures.

Now they've reunited for one of the most anticipated blues releases in years, under the banner The Hollywood Blue Flames - appropriately named, as they both fired and carry the torch of the blues into a new millennium. And to fill the huge musical shoes of Fats, no one could be a better choice than Kirk Fletcher, a young man who was literally raised on the sounds pioneered by the original incarnation of this band. Fletcher plays with the taste and power that truly does justice to not only this band's illustrious legacy but also the blues masters who inspired them.

The Hollywood Blue Flames literally burn their way through a set of fresh originals sprinkled with well-chosen covers on their new CD "Soul Sanctuary." This is blues with both a history and a future - and it's as fresh as today. It doesn't get any better than The Hollywood Blue Flames.

I also stumbled upon this CD and thought I had found the Holy Grail. You can smell the smoke and taste the gin when listening to this disk. The rhythm section is rock solid, the guitar work outstanding and the interplay between the guitar and piano is just mesmerizing to me. I really enjoy the harmonica and vocal stylings too. It's just an outstanding CD and I can't stop listening to it. I would highly recommend you give this a try, the Road to Rio disk and the Hollywood Fats recordings - you won't regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Where have I been?.......2006-09-09

This is another album I luckily stumbled upon. If you want hip hop, this probably is not for you, unless you have finally come to your musical senses. If you've had life experiences they sing about ( within reason, of course...I mean, who has been "born on a mountain, raised in a lion's den"?, it makes the songs more personal and special.

My favorites:

Coco Puffin' ( the sample doesn't include the soul stirring guitar work of Kirk Fletcher...maybe you can listen to the whole song from an online music service)

4 out of 5 stars This Is A Great Album!.......2005-05-20

This is a great album in the west coast and Chicago style blues. The band is the late Hollywood Fat's band (Hollywood Fats = Michael Mann) with Kirk Fletcher on guitar. Al Blake on vocals, harmonica & guitar, Richard Innes on drums, Fred Kaplan piano & organ, Larry Taylor bass. Kirk Fletcher is a superb guitar player and this album is a must have if you like guitar players like Ronnie Earl, Dave Specter, Alex Schultz & Steve Freund! The rest of the guys are as good as it can get!

Following Anna Sokolow The choreographer who knew to listen and discover good composers I discovered Alex North who was Anna Sokolow's companion at her early days. I found his music restful (most of it). Directors in Hollywood knew to choose the right composer for great films.; Technical information: In order to listen to the music you need a DVD player, In my product I can not use a CD player.

A fabulous montage of selections from composer Dimitri Tiomkin's film scores. Listening to this c.d. it is blindingly clear that Mr. Tiomkin blazed the epic film cinematic scoring trail. Composers of film scores over the last two decades have obviousely used Dimitri Tiomkin as their collective benchmark. Superb listening enjoyment!

    3 out of 5 stars a neat little package.......2007-05-17

this is a very nicely produced recital of songs and melodies by two of the greatest composers of film music. the sound quality on the piano selections is particularly pristine and elegant!

what i miss from this recording is a certain passion. especially in the vocalist that performs the selections 'as long as i live' and 'love for love'. her voice and style are very well suited to the korngold-hammersteins songs. this is personal opinion, but i would have preferred a softer, intimate approach to 'love for love', which to me is like a torch song despite a resemblance to 'musetta's waltz' and 'it can't be wrong' warranted the same approach. 'it can't be wrong' is a song that was written to be crooned, not soprano-ed to death.

4 out of 5 stars For Lovers Of Fine And Rare Music.......2002-01-27

This review is limited to the nine tracks containing excerpts
from Erich Wolfgang Korngold's film symphonies. BETWEEN TWO
WORLDS "Rapture" cue is literally a one-of-a-kind recording with
superb sound, and brilliant in execution and arrangement (the
latter is uncredited, but presumably by Korngold, since his
younger son, Mr. George Korngold, is cited as the producer on the
back cover of the CD). ESCAPE ME NEVER "Love For Love" has a
superb piano execution that comes close to being undermined by a
rather irritating soprano performance (but, at least, the lyrics
are interesting to hear) and "Sonnet For Vienna" consists of a
strange and unsettling combination of instruments (lose the
cello!). GIVE US THIS NIGHT cues are fascinating and impossible
to compare, since this is the only modern recording we have of
music from this film (the film, a opera-like musical, seems to
have instantly vaporized upon release by Paramount Pictures).
DEVOTION "Gluckwunsch" offers excellent performances with a great
    instrument-mix arrangement. DECEPTION "Romance-Impromptu" is a
one-of-a-kind recording, literally, with very good performances
and an instrument-mix arrangement that works (this cue did not
survive the film's final cut so, technically, it is not part of
the film symphony!). What does all this mean? For Korngold
enthusiasts this is "must" for your collection. Steiner fans,
you're on your own. But if you're a lover of fine and rare music,
    I'd go for it!
