Average.......2007-05-08
The recording does not have the depth of sound that I was seeking. The selections are okay but could be better--however, this is only a preference. I more or less use the album as background music/noise; do not confuse Telemann with poor music but the recording, yes.
Fantastic!.......2005-02-05
In his day, George Philip Telemann was more popular than Bach. But, as a Telemann fan, I GREATLY enjoy this CD. Additionally, I especially like flutes and violins. The CD includes one of Telemann's best pieces, Suite in A minor for Flute (Suite a-moll) which is a wonderful delight. Telemann also composed concertos for trumpet and one is included here as well. If you haven't tried Telemann, this CD would be a good bet. It's quite versatile too--can be just listened to, used as background music, meditated to, etc.
Fine Collection of Baroque Concertos.......2004-02-16
Telemann certainly was a prolific composer. For some forty-six years he composed much for both church and court.
Composing so much, he understood well the capabilities of each instrument and composed much for each. Here, for flute, oboe and trumpet, as well as strings.
The trio for oboes is especially charming.
Excellent, a great find.......2002-08-01
I really enjoyed this CD because I couldn't find the Suite in a minor by Telemann, until now. A beautiful Rejouissance I must say. I would love to hear longer samples of all the classical music, because I appreciate it so much.

Heavenly........2003-09-20
That is how I describe Maurice Andre's sound. So smooth and suave, and accurate every time. The Michael Haydn Concerto In D is one of the most impressive trumpet works ever recorded. Andre does it better than anyone else ever did, if you ask me. He also takes on J.S. Bach's "Brandenburg Concerto No. 2" and the results are majestic. The essential Joseph Haydn Trumpet Concerto is on here as well, a piece in which Andre plays an especially stunning cadenza on the first movement. The Telemann, Tartini, Handel, Vivaldi and Marcello are all impeccably played. Maurice Andre was the second or third trumpet player I started listening to after Miles Davis. I also discovered Clifford Brown around then, back in 6th grade. Since then, they have all remained in my list of all-time favorite trumpet players and musicians.
A must have album!.......2001-09-17
The incredible playing of Maurice Andre fills up all two of these cds. From the incredible brandenberg reading to the Cimarosa. This album from start to finish is a text book on beauty, style, phrasing, and how to play the trumpet. Andre is a true master of the trumpet and even more a true master musician.
Pyrotechnics.......2001-06-21
Maurice André is one of those people whom one suspects isn't quite human like the rest of us (Michala Petri is another). To anyone who has ever struggled to get as much as a parp or a toot out of a trumpet, the astounding technical facility and the pure, clear, pitch-perfect sound and wonderful tone of an André is a revelation that some people are indeed more equal than others. This collection represents André in his prime (he's now sadly semi-retired) and he does a wonderful job. Many of these works are not originally for trumpet, and only a modern piccolo valved trumpet allows them to be played. Nevertheless, they come up shining.
A must for the trumpet player's library!.......1999-09-23
If you're into trumpet concertos, Maurice Andre is as smooth and technical as they come. This two-CD set contains not only Bach, but also Handel, Telemann, Haydn, Albinoni, and others. If you have Andre's concertos in your sheet music library, these CD's make for great accompaniment. The CDs are great while studying as well. Mega cerebral (when you're into that kind of thing)!

Customer Reviews:
Great all around - especially Mozart.......2005-06-30
Every concerto/piece for flute and orchestra presented here can stand as the very pinnacle of performance and interpretation. Rampal and friends play with all the logic and song of the French school. I would like to commend the Mozart G Major concerto in particular, as Rampal's is the best performance I know (I've heard a better one, but that was on internet radio and I wasn't able to find out who performed it - I'm still searching). I have heard 10 other G Majors, all by worthy soloists with the likes of the VPO or LSO accompanying, and none can outdo Rampal's passionate yet low-key style with the absolutely glorious Israel Philharmonic (you might never have heard them - and you'll wonder why!) with a reasonably alert Zubin Mehta at the helm. The balance is wonderful, with the delicate middle string parts coming through clearly (shame on you, DG and Decca). If only Karl Boehm had been around to wave the stick for these Mozart recordings (The D Major and C Major here are also magnifcent, by the way), this would likely be hands-down the only set of Mozart concertos you'll ever need. Nevertheless, they are pretty darn close.
Every piece on these discs is wonderful, and I urge you to get them as quickly as possible. The style and wit of these recordings are not to be missed at any cost. As the English flutist William Bennett, whose recordings you should look into if you play flute, once told me, "Be a light person - like Jean-Pierre Rampal!"
Rampal: master flutist of the 20th Century.......2003-08-17
The late Jean-Pierre Rampal, whom I had the pleasure to meet and chat with in the 1980's, is a "triple threat" man, in analogy to the football term. Some fine players impress with their technique. I am swept along by Rampal's renditions in a way that makes me forget all about technique - except for miraculous nuances every now and then that remind me that Rampal recreates every work with a creative, perceptive mind. For example, in Vivaldi's "Goldfinch" concerto Rampal, as almost afterthoughts, puts in exquisite little embellishments that literally makes a little bird come to life. It's a miraculous sound. Too bad Antonio Vivaldi couldn't have heard it.
Rampal has other qualities that stand out in his recordings. He was well aware that most of the best flute music was composed in the Baroque and Classical eras, and sought out the very best, well known or rare, in these genres - while not being limited to these periods.
Finally, Rampal was picky about the ensembles he played with and the recording companies who did the technical work for his recordings. The ensembles might be famous or little known, but always high-quality cooperators. The result is nearly always, as in this case, brilliant, clear, and balanced.
Five stars gets used frequently in recording reviews - it's too little for this recording.

Most enjoyable CD.......2007-03-10
One of the best CD's heard. I've been looking for something this good for a long time.
CORNUCOPIA.......2006-05-18
This disc is perfectly brilliant, and I can't recommend it strongly enough. Strictly speaking, only two of the four works given here are concertos, the other two being standard orchestral pieces with prominent work for the horns. Haydn's is one of his early symphonies from his Esterhazy period featuring also solos for cello and violin in its slow movement and a long finale consisting of a set of variations in a kind of gavotte rhythm giving the spotlight to various other members of the orchestra, notably flute and viola da gamba. The Telemann `overture' is a suite in nine movements, along the lines of Handel's Water Music or Fireworks Music but with more pictorial and representational elements. The contribution from Handel himself is a short introduction and andante, suggestive of a formal occasion and with the introduction using material familiar from the Fireworks Music.
The real cracker is Schumann's short concerto, in the usual 3-movement layout. This was described by Tovey as nearly unplayable, but today's virtuosi seem to be afraid of nothing. They even restore some high notes that Schumann revised out of the score, and what a thrilling effect they make. The four soloists are the lead horn-players, American by nationality, in various European orchestras, and they cover themselves with distinction from start to finish. Four virtuoso horn solos naturally take the limelight off the orchestra, but the Sinfonia Varsovia acquit themselves splendidly, particularly in the Haydn symphony where the treatment of the instruments is more democratic and all sections of the band get their chance to shine.
The recording, from Warsaw in 2003, is excellent, and the liner-note, although brief, is helpful and informative, although I would have been glad to be told more about the Handel piece. There are also horn parts of startling difficulty in two of Handel's Concerti a Due Cori, and it would have been interesting to know how he managed to find players of this calibre. It is unusual for him to over-tax his English orchestral players, no doubt for sound reasons of experience, and he surely must have felt a high degree of confidence to write in this way for horns.
As usual with Naxos, there are potted biographies of the soloists and the conductor plus a short history of the orchestra. Also as usual, I wish to praise Naxos in the strongest terms for the imagination and flair they dependably display in finding unfamiliar music of high quality, making a superb job of the production of it, and giving it to us at such a modest cost - apart from anything else there is a full hour and a quarter of music here. I make no apology for constantly repeating this sentiment, indeed I only hope I shall still be doing just that for a good few years to come.
A wonderful sound........2006-03-24
This CD recalls the reason I had my daughter play the horn in school. The horn is one of the most important and lovliest instruments in an orchestra. Four is that much better.
Great Album.......2006-02-19
This is a great, explosive album. The choice of music is, of course, fantastic, and the execution of them pieces is well done. I highly reccommend it.
Superb on All Counts.......2005-12-23
As a long time horn player and fan of Naxos, this is the perfect recording for those music lovers who don't know the richness of the four-horn literature. It it indeed limited when compared to most other interumental ensembles, such as a string quartet, but this is the best and most accessible recording on the market to introduce neophytes to this sonic wonderland. The playing is exceptional, as the AHQ is a solid, professional, touring outfit, the balances fine, the interpretations solid, and above all FUN. Buy it. Enjoy it. Encourage your friends and children to learn to play the horn, if they dare and want to play like this.

Wunderbar.......2005-05-15
Die Musik des Georg Philipp Telemanns ist immer schoen, und dieses Wassermusiks auch so ist.
a lesser known great.......2000-11-20
Telemann's Wassermusik (composed in 1723) is a highly enjoyable baroque masterpiece. The Harlequinade (track 6) is especially great, featuring a chorus of cellos over rollicking pizzicato violins. The Sarabande (track 2) is a sweet, beatuiful interlude after the bombastic overture. The exact meaning of the subtitles are unknown, but each movement carries a distinct flavor- and it is this abstract quality of instrumental music that Telemann so completely masters.
Goebel and the Musica Antiqua Koln bring so much to this music in skill, energy, feeling, and texture. The three recorder concertos show off the immense talents of the wind players, which is already apparent in the Water Music. Don't get me wrong- I'm not smashing recorders in the street- but I'm sure I'm not alone in my prejudice against this instrument (why are there so many Marion Verbruggen albums flooding the market?). These are fine works nonetheless, and for those of you who DO favor the instrument you'll enjoy this recording all the more. In any event, I've been finding a lot of surprises in Telemann's ouvre. It's no wonder he was so well regarded in his time. If you're having difficulty sifting through the scads of works by this composer, please give this CD a try. It is a perfect recording of a deeply pleasing work.

Customer Reviews:
Topflight Telemann, but . . ........2002-12-16
For aficionados of period music performance I can understand the high marks given these unusual and outstanding Telemann works by previous reviewers. Goebel's group strives for technical perfection - and gets pretty close to it.
As you can tell by my user name, Telemann is one of my favorite composers. However I feel that the excitement and inspiration in his works - highly appreciated in his time - is, paradoxically, blocked from contemporary music lovers by groups that insist on performing for audiences who have been dead for 250 years. Reinhard Goebel and his Camerata Koln have given me intense frustration by continually rediscovering and performing music that I love - but performing it in a way that I regard as "antiqued", arbitrarily inhibited and stylized. Although Goebel may have mellowed a bit since his earlier, rigidly mannered performances, Telemann's mastery of all the orchestral instrument sonorities available in his time (and some that were not yet in the orchestra, like the chalumeau or early clarinet), his unexpected twists, and above all, his love of melody, has trouble coming alive to modern audiences in period performance recordings.
It is doubly ironic that whereas Bach, Vivaldi, and Handel's music is available to contemporary general audiences in dynamic, "living tradition" performance styles - and consequently sells substantial numbers of recordings, Telemann, who was specially committed to audiences and performers (he was the first in Germany to open up the hitherto closed university Collegium Musicums to the public), is largely heard by elite listeners - professionals, esthetes, and cognoscenti of early music.
There is another new recording of Telemann: oboe concerti, also available from Amazon.com. For those to whom this debate is new, listen to the opening E-flat major concerto and you'll hear what I am talking about.
Incredible recording!!!.......2002-07-27
After hearing the last disc with Telemann String Concertos I was thrilled when I discovered that there would be a second cd with music by Telemann. The group has some new members. The most obvious change is in the continuo with a new cellist and harpsichordist to replace the outstanding Markus Möllenbeck and Christian Rieger. The former star of the group, 1st violinist Florian Deuter is also replaced here by Stephan Schardt AND surprisingly the Maestro himself, Reinhard Goebel who after an arm injury actually has re-learned to play the violin by holding it on the right shoulder instead of the left!
I was actually a bit worried after hearing the latest cd "Bachiana" with the new ensemble. When being a fan of MAK you get used to absolute perfection in every sense of the word. Precision and intonation is always impeccable. I would never have reacted or been disturbed if I'd heard the small imperfections in the cd from basically any other ensemble but with MAK you notice! Sometimes the harpsichord is a bit after the beats and Schardt's playing isn't always convincing.
Anyway, the new disc completely wipes all doubts away. This recording is a blast!! The sound have never been so big, so symphonic and powerful. The characters of each piece are also very convincing. The continuo playing is absolute top class. So is the solo playing from the violins. There are some amazing pieces to discover here like the concertos for four violins and the suite in D with gamba played by Jaap ter Linden. Some people have a problem to accept and enjoy the, in their ears, extreme approach that MAK has developed during the last ten years. I think the reason is that this way of playing is still unique. Like when "we" started to play baroque instruments and a lot of people were sceptical about it. Let's move on...
To play with full sound and to play with a real legato has been taboo in the early music búsiness. It's time for some change! I hope that a lot of people discover this recording and find out how wonderful the music of once neglected composer Telemann can be when played with great passion and sense of style.
Engaging performances.......2002-06-20
Telemann's music has been enjoying an amazing resurgence, reminiscent of the renaissance Vivaldi underwent some decades ago. This disc is sure to secure the reputation of a composer much maligned in many musicological circles. The attractive collection of works includes at least three real gems, the Overture TWV55:D6 for viola da gamba and orchestra, the Concerto for four violins and orchestra TWV54:A1 and the Concerto 'Die Relinge' TWV 51:A4 (a recent discovery but recorded elsewhere on at least one other occasion). There are also three concertos for four solo violins, played with rhythmic elan and radiant string sound. There is only one weak work, the Symphony TWVAnh50:1.
Musica Antiqua Köln does a superb job, injecting this music with consistent life, energy and elegance and this disc is warmly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
1st rate Telemann, excellent, warm sound.......2006-02-12
It is a fair criticism of some period instrument recordings that the strings sound "edgy" or overly bright. Much as I enjoy Musica Antiqua Koln, for example, I don't think their sound, as represented by their recordings, is as flattering, or pleasant, as they sound live. It is indeed bright, and on the wrong hi-fi, edgy and wearing.
The German label MDG has been getting good press for their recording quality, and this recording is a great example of why that is so. It is one of the warmest and richest recordings of a period instrument group that I have heard. Happily, that group, Musica Alta Ripa, is first rate. It is a small ensemble--there are 11 players on this record, including a wonderful bassoon "guest" artist, and they utilize not only a harpsichord, but a theorbo or baroque guitar in the continuo part.
And how can you go wrong with Telemann? Most of this disc consists of music for strings (pleasantly interrupted by a concerto for recorder, bassoon and strings). It is as good a cross-section of Telemann's work as this listener has encountered, with the possible exception of the best of Telemann's Tafelmusic.
Strongly recommended, especially for listeners who have been disappointed by period performances in the past.

Customer Reviews:
Excellent Baroque collection - everyone should have this!.......2002-06-18
This is a remarkable collection of Baroque music. I've heard a lot of Baroque music and I am very discriminating about performance and sound quality. This set is a winner and a fantastic bargain... Somehow they've managed to choose what is truly "best" from the period (for example I've always felt Bach's Brandenburg Concertos # 2, 3, 5 were the best of the six, while 1,4,6 were relatively weaker - and lo and behold this collection includes 2,3,and 5) while missing very little if anything that "should have" been here (of course a 10 or 12 CD collection would have been even better, but you have to stop somewhere).
The performances here are excellent, and the recording quality is very high. I disagree with the person who claims this isn't "audiophile quality", because I don't think it could get much better unless it were on another medium such as SACD. I didn't particularly notice coughing on Handel's "Messiah" but Messiah fans would likely prefer a complete performance of that particular work anyway (the excerpts from Messiah here are complete pieces, but this set doesn't include the entire 2 hour or whatever Messiah). These do not sound like "outtakes", what kind of a comment is that? Somebody worked very hard to put this collection together, and they did a fantastic job (and I have zero affiliation with this, I just feel the truth as I see it should be told).
Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is presented in it's entirety (ok, it's not the entire Vivaldi Opus 8, but it is the entire Four Seasons as normally found on any "Four Seasons" CD). There are so many great works here, which a lot of people will recognize even if they didn't know the actual piece or composer (or even that it was from the Baroque era). There's even the Mouret fanfare made famous as the "Masterpiece Theater" theme music. Yes this is a great "introduction" at a great price - which might get people to explore Baroque music further, but it's also a fairly complete collection which will suit a lot of people as such (i.e. for everyone who appreciates most any type of music these works should be "essential", but also the 4 CD collection might be all that a casual listener would "need" from the Baroque era). I feel that most people would be thrilled with this set; about the only way it might have been better would be to include information about each piece and about the Baroque era in general (there is no "text" at all with this set).
Entry level baroque.......2001-01-11
Nice cheap way to get into Baroque music. Unfortunately it's not the best recording you can get but it should be adequate enough for a non-audiophile. I've been unable to bring myself to listening to it again since I noticed that someone coughs in the background (very noticeably) during Handel's Messiah. Wonder if this is an outtakes CD.
