Modern Medieval Polyphony with the spirit of Rumi.......2001-05-04
"Unseen Rain" is one of the most fascination new renditions of the medieval sound that I've ever heard. Ensemble PAN derives its name from Phillippe de Vitry's 14th century treatise "Ars Nova". They perform early music and, as is the case with "Unseen Rain", modern medieval music. The composer of the works performed on "Unseen Rain" is Robert Kyr. Kyr has a distinguished academic background and is a faculty member at the University of Oregon. The richly haunting medieval polyphony of this music performed by the wonderfully accomplished P.A.N. is a stellar recording. I first heard this CD on NPR's "Sound and Spirit" hosted by Ellen Kushner. Ms. Kushner played "A Communal Affirmation", Part III of "Unseen Rain" side by side with an array of Turkish Sufi music. The composition and sound fit well in this tribute to the poetry of the Turkish mystic Rumi. And, that really sums up the overall feel of this musical. It is a mystical enchantment.
