Is the sink running or is the toilet valve stuck?

5 out of 5 stars Apocalypse on earth, the New Jerusalem in our hearts.......2002-08-09

This is Beethoven's real musical testament. It starts with the witches of Macbeth who are the knocking of fate at the gate of the New Jerusalem of the Apocalypse Beethoven would like to see - one day, though he knows he won't - built on earth. This symphony is this Apocalypse itself and aims at building the music of that New Jerusalem on earth that no one will understand and appreciate before the ringing of the seven trumpets of all the dramas of our modern European and universal history. Then we delve into the false illusions of men dancing and celebrating the liberation of Europe from the dictator Napoleon, false illusions that are short-lived and nothing but a moquery or a masque to cover up and hide the deep nature of the forces rising behind the smokescreen of military or political victories, any advance in historical liberation leading to a relapse in tyranny : the going back to the old ancient dictatorship of absolute power founded on the caprices and whimsical tempers of the few who govern rather than on the laws and reason of nature and man seen as a divine creative adventure. Fate is a jester, a clown and people are gullible and blind, maybe deaf to the voices of their hearts and souls. It becomes like a danse macabre akin to pure folly, walking headlong to their own destruction or enslavement while thinking it is the road to light and freedom. So, to step beyond that fatality we must, along with Beethoven, go down into our hearts and find the faith and the strength only our souls can provide. From the heart must the only force arise we need to create that new free equal world of liberated deep-felt and deep-feeling beings that can impose love over hate, peace over war, joy over mourning and sadness. And, after a quick survey of the first three moments, all rejected, we slowly slide into the fourth dimension and its four voices borrowed and amplified from Friedrich Schiller. There Beethoven becomes the real « sound-poet » he always claimed to be, associating voice, words and music to evoke the long trail that will open in front of us. A trail we cannot enter if we are not friends, first opening word, brothers and sisters in faith and conviction, millions in number. This trail is only open to humanity as a whole and Beethoven is the prophet of it with Schiller's words. We will have to face our sins and the dragon of all evils that will try to get us off the right road, but the music leads us to victory, up and away on our pilgrim's progress to the Jerusalem we dream of, we will build beyond the greed and envy of those who roam around to steal our destiny from us, a destiny that can only stand firm if we stand firmly together in our brotherhood that implies an all-powerful father inspiring us and our lives. An everlasting masterpiece of inspiration and enlightenment, of musical utopia and human longing.
