4 out of 5 stars Best of the the popular Copland..........2004-12-26

Here's a great introduction to the popular music of Aaron Copland. When "Fanfare for the Common Man" begins, sparks of recognition will fly for most listeners. This song has been everywhere: presidential inaugurations, the olympics, commercials, movies, etc. Some flatten it as hopelessly clichéd, while others find it moving and inspiring. Copland also reprised it in the finale of his Third Symphony. Arguably Copland's most famous piece, "Appalachian Spring" closes the CD. In between, more great Copland: excerpts from 'Rodeo' (apparently the beef lobby has appropriated "Hoe-Down" as one of their themes); a great vocal rendition of "Simple Gifts" and a large chunk of another of Copland's best known works: "Billy the Kid". The only confusing piece is the "Variations on a Shaker Hymn" from Appalachian Spring when the entire Appalachian Spring is already included. Seems slightly redundant.

Though most of the pieces on this CD were written in the 1930s and 1940s, they tend to evoke the old west. With titles such as "Rodeo" and "Billy the Kid" this shouldn't surprise too many people.

Copland went on to compose more dissonant and twelve tone compositions later on in his career. These obviously weren't as popular with the public in general as the pieces on this CD. Nonetheless, if this disc whets the appetite, a foray into Copland's less popular works will yield much. It will help to expose the totality of Copland's output. This disc only represents a small portion of his work. Regardless, this disc is a great starting point for getting to know one of the United States' best known composers of the twentieth century.

4 out of 5 stars A Great American Album.......2004-02-13

This is a great album representing true patriotic American music. Songs like "Hoe-Down" are lively and energetic and give rememberance to what one can imagine as the true American spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Must have this one..........2002-09-17

I like all types of music, I wanted this album because I liked the song "RODEO" that is used on the beef commercials. This CD has made me into a Copland fan. It has many great songs. If you want a CD that says "I am an American." This is it. I am sending copies to a friend in Bombay and Tel Aviv. This is who I am put to music.

Aaron Copland made numerous recordings of his own music, including an extensive series for CBS during the 1960s and '70s, mostly with London orchestras. He was not an especially proficient conductor--consequently, the performances he conducted often lacked pace and rhythmic punch. His last recordings of his most popular scores have been reissued by Sony on an exceptionally well-remastered 3-CD set. These accounts do a good job of conveying the overall shape of the pieces, and they deliver telling characterizations of many episodes. Details emerge that are lost in some other accounts, and there is an appealing gentleness and sweetness to the approach. But the readings do not have as much grip as those of Bernstein and Slatkin, among others, and in spite of the authority they automatically possess, they are not necessarily preferable. --Ted Libbey

5 out of 5 stars Aaron Copland: Populist and Conductor.......2005-03-29

If you want a prime collection of Copland's more accessible works, this is it. Yes, it's true that Bernstein's recordings of individual pieces are often bolder and livelier; but this set offers the composer's own authoritative view of his work, and for that reason alone it is priceless. In addition, it includes virtually all the orchestral pieces he composed during his "populist phase," from El Salon Mexico (1936) to the Clarinet Concerto (1948). You won't find some of these lesser-known gems, such as An Outdoor Overture (1938) or Letter from Home (1944, written--like Rhapsody in Blue--for Paul Whiteman), on typical single-disc Copland compilations. I'd even go so far as to claim this as one of the four indispensable compilations of American instrumental music from the first half of the twentieth century (the others on my list--in case anyone cares--are Joshua Rifkin playing Scott Joplin, Oscar Levant playing Gershwin, and the Blanton-Webster band recordings of Duke Ellington).

What amazing riches flowed from Copland's pen during the period covered by these three discs! Billy the Kid (1939), Quiet City (1940), Our Town (1940), Fanfare for the Common Man (1942), Rodeo (1942), Lincoln Portrait (1942), Appalachian Spring (1944), and the Third Symphony (1946)--all are here. Some of this music is so familiar, so deeply ingrained in America's cultural consciousness, that we might be tempted to take it for granted. But imagine how much poorer the American concert repertoire would be without it. It's almost impossible, at this point, to conceive of a time when this wonderful music--which is to America roughly what Mussorgsky's music is to Russia, Grieg's to Norway, and Falla's to Spain--didn't exist. It was during the dozen years covered by this collection that Copland pulled away from the pack of his talented contemporaries (Hanson, Thomson, Harris, etc.) and, in a way, but with greater technical sophistication, filled the void left by the tragically early death of Gershwin, whose heyday, 1924-1935, immediately preceded the composition of the works on this collection.

The ballet music is all presented here in the familiar orchestral suites Copland arranged. Most of the selections are played by the London Symphony Orchestra, although the New Philharmonia and the just-plain Philharmonia get cracks at a few key works. The last-named orchestra, for instance, takes on the biggest piece on the program, Copland's Third, the closest thing American music has to a Beethoven's Ninth (although the work's sublime rhetoric has never completely convinced me--it's neither my personal favorite by Copland nor my favorite American symphony . . . but it sure has its moments). In addition to the fine orchestral playing, another treat is that Henry Fonda narrates the Lincoln Portrait--an almost inevitable pick, given the virtually mythic way his acting style embodied the American spirit and the fact that he had portrayed the sixteenth president in John Ford's classic film Young Mr. Lincoln (1939).

The set concludes with what, over the years, has become my favorite work by Copland, the Concerto for Clarinet, Strings, Harp, & Piano, written for and performed here by surely the last century's greatest clarinetist, Benny Goodman. This work effects a concise synthesis between Copland's mature style and his earlier jazz stylings from the 1920s; in addition, the searing eloquence of the opening slow movement seems to me the most profound lyrical writing Copland ever achieved. Stoltzman's recording, ironically enough, swings harder than the king of swing's, but this collaboration between the composer and the man who commissioned it is for the ages.

The only major "populist" scores written after the period this collection covers are the film scores to The Red Pony (1948) and The Heiress (1949). Both can be acquired on an essential Leonard Slatkin CD for RCA. And since this collection doesn't include chamber music, the great Violin Sonata (1943), a kind of more intimate counterpart to Appalachian Spring, will have to be sought elsewhere. (One good option is Gil Shaham/Andre Previn on DG.) A serious Copland collector will also want to grab the other two volumes of the Copland Collection itself. The early set features important works such as the Organ Symphony (1924), Music for the Theater (1925), and the Short Symphony (1932)--but both of the other collections also include long, thorny pieces like the early Symphonic Ode and the late Connotations that can be rather difficult for the average enthusiast to enjoy.

Most of the essential, universal Copland is to be found on this second installment of the Copland Collection, and I would definitely recommend it as the place to start exploring Copland's magnificent contribution to American music. It has been a wonderful and treasured companion of mine for many years, and it also serves to conjure up a timely and inspiring vision of open prairies, nocturnal cityscapes, and the populist, humane values that America should, ideally, epitomize.

5 out of 5 stars Tribute to Lincoln.......2001-10-28

I purchased this set of Copeland CD's because I wanted the Tribute to Lincoln narrated by Henry Fonda. This is a masterful recording especially for Americans in this time. The Tribute sends chills down my spine whenever I her it. My greatest joy however, was how much I have enjoyed all of the CD's in the set. I tend to be much more of a classical listener. I have heard Copeland but not in any organized fashion. This set has brought a new and delightful experience to my listening options.

4 out of 5 stars A great way to get your dose of Copland...........2000-06-30

The 2nd of this three CD collection is wonderful. My favorite though is the third one. Doesn't mean this isn't good. This Sony Copland Collection set is worth the money for. Copland is sooo much more then Appalachian Spring, Fanfare for the Common Man, Rodeo, etc... But you get a lot of typical Copland on these CDs. Songs we all know and love. But there are some unfamiliar good ones too. Concerto for Clarinet took me by storm. So did Letters from Home. Good quality, good booklet, good recording, good playing (how Copland got the London Symphony to play something right I will never know), good everything. It's not perfect because it doesn't compete with THE best Copland like the third CD set of this collection, or the The Tendeer Land. Oh, these three CD sets don't cover all Copland, but it does for the most part. It doesn't have many chamber works, two choral works, and his two operas. You can cover some of those with the full version of Tender Land and of Second Hurricane (which also comes with the choral work, In the Beginning). But this is a good series. I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Well balanced retrospective, -or- Listen to this!.......1999-08-11

Mr. Copland's works, as always, are exceptional This album, which consists of his work both as a composer and as a conductor, brings his music to life in a way no other conductor can. This is a well mastered and well produced work and worth the listen. To hear Arron Copland's music as he intended is wonderfull.

5 out of 5 stars A Unique Opportunity to hear it from Coplands mind.......2004-02-02

Aaron Copland can be and should be considered the father of American concert music. He decisively created a style of music that needed to be made as we were reaching maturity as a country. This collection of his orchestral works gives a great outline of the music that makes Copland such a innovative composer.
I personally find that the most interesting part of this collection is the inclusion of rehearsal audio from the same recording of Appalachian Spring that appears on the CD. This offers a unique opportunity to hear what Copland's vision of his music was. I am one who personally believes that no performance of a concert orchestral piece can be heard as it was meant to be unless the composer is leading the ensemble. By hearing Copland conducting a rehearsal of one of his masterworks, the listener is given a greater appreciation for exactly what Copland's vision was for his own music.

A definite must have for lovers of the young tradition of American Music.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive American symphonic music.......2002-08-08

When I first was introduced to classical music, little attention was being paid to anything American. Edward McDowell was occasionally played. And Los Angeles classical music station, KFAC, would very occasionally play something by Morton Gould. Gershwin was largely ignored And there was Aaron Copland.

For my fairly young ears, the western flavor of the music was esciting. I could picture western movie-like scenes to the accompaniment of "Billy the Kid" and "Rodeo". Indeed, such music is highly pictorial.

But now I'm also familiar with "Fanfare for the Common Man" and Appalachian Spring. I very much recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars The composer as conductor is unusurpassed.......2001-03-29

This is a reissue of recordings conducted by Copland himself that are totally definitive and, to my mind, superior to the recordings by Bernstein that are generally considered to be the best. The composer has a broader, grander vision of these works, taking them at a slower and more majestic pace than Bernstein and others. In his hands this is great classical music, not just upscale cowboy music. The sound quality is phenomenal for the most part as well, the engineers must have performed miracles because the recordings with the LSO sound better than almost any modern digital recording. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A great treat!.......2001-03-06

Here we have not only the original, complete chamber arrangement of Appalachian Spring in a pretty fine performance by Copland, but we get a neat 17 minutes of Copland rehearsing it, which is pretty cool for the Copland fan. Plus Nonet for Strings, well performed, which is a rare thing these days. The other disk is pretty average - Copland wasn't much of a conductor, but the chamber Appalachian and Nonet make up for it. Cheap and unique. A must have for the Copland fan.

5 out of 5 stars Bernstein, Four Copland Ballets: SACD multichannel / stereo.......2003-09-06

Here we have the reissued classic Bernstein/New York Philharmonic recordings of four primary Copland ballets: Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, Rodeo (dances sequence), and Billy the Kid. Even in comparison with the composer's own recorded performances, these readings stand out, a bit above. The sheer wide-open-prairie sound that SACD multichannel now allows ... now how did those old CBS stereo master tapes become multi? who knows?... in any case the surround sound now achieves new vividness, and a kind of "you are there" accuracy of tonal presence, whether the orchestra is temporarily engaging in play among one or more reduced, chamber-sized groups, or gathered up in typical Copland massed effects. All of these ballets are given completely superlative readings by Bernstein and company, here. But this new SACD mastering/pressing allows the greatness to come through more completely than ever before. As if Appalachian Spring, El Salon Mexico, and Rodeo were not enough: the recording of Billy the Kid tops it all. Even though this is the earliest recording, made in 1959, it was done in Boston's Symphony Hall. Although the differences in acoustic are subtle, if you listen closely among the changing tracks, you will hear the extra clarity and musical power of the Boston hall, long and deservedly renowned for its own special greatness of sound. In sum, you can buy this SACD for the sheer authenticity of the performances; or you can use it to test drive your multichannel system. In the latter case, you will be evaluating more than glitzy or floor-shaking sound effects, in favor of hearing just how much sheer music your rig can produce. The best of both worlds ... I am listening on five full-range speakers ... leaves a listener breathless with amazement. Billy the Kid is almost fifty years old, and sounds the best of the lot! Who can bear the agony of waiting to hear what contemporary BMG might be able to do with those equally famous Reiner/Chicago Symphony master tapes, also recorded in the pace-setting days of early stereo recording? Get this SACD disc, now. Forget movies for a while. Use your ears for fun, while you still have them. Highly recommended, for performance. Highly recommended for sound, especially in multichannel playback.

5 out of 5 stars Aaron Copland: Essential Classics.......2003-11-21

This excellent introduction to the symphonic Copland repackages an earlier "Decca Double Decker" (see B000004284). Deleted are "Old American Songs" and added are "Billy the Kid" and "Danzon Cubano". These recordings were made from 1969-1994. The sonics are exemplary. The performances are all very good to excellent. Everyone has their personal favorites of these works so your mileage may vary.

Dorati & Detroit SO > Rodeo, El Solon Mexico, Dance Symphony. Howarth & London Sinfonietta > Music for the Movies. Marriner & The Academy > Quiet City. Metha & LAPO > Fanfare for the Common Man, Appalachian Spring, Lincoln Portrait with Gregory Peck, narrator. Philip Jones Brass Ensemble > Ceremonial Fanfare. Zinman & Baltimore SO > Billy the Kid, Danzon Cubano.

Gregory Peck comes across very, very well. Warm, personal, forthright. Worth the price of the disc just to hear him deliver the words wrapped in Copland's music as directed by Metha and performed by the LA Philharmonic Orchestra.

Don't expect any copious liner notes here -- there aren't any. Just a listing of what's what and who did what. Two panels of the folded sheet are needlessly occupied by advertising other "essential" CDs. I would gladly rip them out if I didn't like the overall design so much. The art direction and design of the package is stellar but lacks "essential" or any background information.

Unless I'm mistaken, there are 5 "hits" on the first disc and 6 on the second. That's 11. The subtitle here is "12 Greatest Hits". Am I missing something?

Still, judging by what's here, the selections and performances, an excellent compilation. I'm glad to have it.

5 out of 5 stars Best and Concise Collection of Aaron Copland.......2005-12-21

Aaron Copland is for me one of three of America's greatest composers of the 20th Century. Bernard Herrmann and Jerome Moross are the other two. Aaron Copland would have been 100 years old on November 14, 2000. In reflection I turned back to my first Copland album: Aaron Copland - Greatest Hits. I was familiar as most people are with "Hoe Down" and that was the springboard for me. What attracted me was that distinctive "American" sound and "American" quality of the piece. This "American" sound is very present in Jerome Moross' score for the epic Western film, "The Big Country." One can also find similar influences in Bernard Herrmann's score for "The Kentuckian" and very much like Copland, Herrmann researched and interpolated regional folk songs and integrated them into his own unique style. Because I always liked film scores and also very much liked Copland's "Hoe Down" I always thought there had to be some connection with the musical approach. When I got this album and listened to "Appalachian Spring" for the first time I knew that I had discovered pure "Americana" and I have found that sound replicated in so many films. If you listen to the scores for "The Natural" or "Field of Dreams" or even recently to "Saving Private Ryan" this sound is present. This is a tribute to Copland and American music. Copland reinvented American music by giving it his unique structure. Copland's music is so simply melodic yet richly textured that it has an inherent sophistication that defines our nation. This is one of my favorite Copland albums. That may be sentimental, but it helped me try to define a sound that I personally found moving and uplifting. I highly recommend this album of collected recordings. The recording of "Appalachian Spring" on this CD performed by the New York Philharmonic and conducted by Leonard Bernstein is my favorite recording of this piece to date.

Antal Dorati's performance of Appalachian Spring is the most beautiful on disc. There are other performances that have a more rustic character, or perhaps a sharper rhythmic definition, but none have such purity and innocence. It's certainly not the only way to conduct the ballet, but on its own terms, the music simply shines. The remaining works range from the incredibly popular Rodeo music (better known as the music from the beef commercials) to the early but exciting Dance Symphony. All of them have been extremely well recorded, and Dorati's expertise as a ballet conductor ensures that the performances are completely idiomatic. --David Hurwitz

3 out of 5 stars the start is allright but then .......2006-01-21

the start is allright, but then. Copland has produced some original melodies but also not original melodies. Music quality is great. Overall quality is okay.

5 out of 5 stars Copland Via Motown.......2002-06-08

As he had done with his recordings of Grofe's "Grand Canyon Suite" and Gershwin's "Porgy And Bess Symphonic Picture", Antal Dorati and his Detroit Symphony Orchestra, in recordings made in the early 1980s, have distinguished themselves in the American classical music canon by taking on the works of America's most popular native composer, Aaron Copland.

Beginning with Copland's homage to the land below the Rio Grande, "El Salon Mexico", and continuing on with his lesser-known "Dance Symphony" (a ghoulish work taken from his never-staged 1920's ballet "Grohg"), Dorati and his orchestra then move to the stirring "Fanfare For The Common Man", then traverse the suites Copland extracted from his two ultra-popular ballets--"Rodeo" and "Appalachian Spring." All of these works are done excellently by an orchestra that has often been underrated.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother buying this CD, despite digital sound........1999-05-17

Even with digital recording and generally great sound quality, Dorati and the DSO produce lifeless performances of Copland's work, especially in the four suites from Rodeo. Dorati chooses a plodding tempo and the Detroit players seem to be just generally going through the motions. One can say the same about the rendition of the Dance Symphony, but better results are acheived in Appalachian Spring and Fanfare for the Common Man, where the digital sound really adds extra sparkle. However, the best version I've ever heard is still Bernstein with the NYPO, where the adrenaline really lends itself to a fantanstic performance of both Appalachian Spring and Rodeo.

5 out of 5 stars I can only add more praise.......1999-05-13

The orchestral execution here in the Copland idiom is exquisite, the sound to match. Dorati took much more care with Copland than anyone else, indeed you could argue he was the first maestro other than Koussevitsky to taken Copland seriously, especially in the recording studio.

Buy this disc and just revel in it.

5 out of 5 stars I'm listening to it now!.......1998-09-29

An owner of many Copland works on CD performed by many orchestras and conductors, I have found Dorati to be the best yet in interpreting Copland's music. Although Dorati takes most of the pieces at a slower tempo than most, such as Bernstein, he makes up the vigor with his musical interpretation and fluidity. Perhaps the closest to what Copland intended the music to be. Even if you have the same pieces by different conductors, buy this one anyway, you will find the differences rewarding to the ear.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Performance of the Boston Pops.......2003-08-08

This is a very fine collection of recordings of Copland. The performances of Boston with Copland conducting his own music is a sure-fire guarantee you'll hear the music as he intended.

The only reason I give this CD 4 stars instead of five is the less than perfect performance of "Fanfare for the Common Man" done by Philly under Ormandy and the "jumpstart" into Hoedown from Rodeo. The intonation of the brass in the Philly performance is seriously off, and there seems to be no lead-in to "Hoedown". Minor problems on an otherwise excellent CD.

4 out of 5 stars The best Copland 'bests' CD.............2000-06-18

Out of all of the CDs which contain the 'best' Copland works, this one is the best for your money. You get nice quality, nice selections, and a confusing CD case (which is confusing to open). The Tender Land excerpts introduced me to one of the best operas ever. Copland, who conducts this and Appalachian Spring, did a marvelous job capturing his own spirit of the rural American life. Don't stop at this CD though! There's so much more great Copland! Tender Land is wonderful! Also his Symphony no. 3, which incorporates Fanfare for the Common Man into it, Red Pony, Down a Country Lane, and the Old American Songs (which contains a couple of familar tunes you'll hear from this CD). This is a good one! Not perfect (stuiped CD case) but good.

5 out of 5 stars Best Rodeo.......2007-02-08

Have only heard Rodeo, but it's worth the price of the CD. Clean, crisp, balanced, rhythmic, brassy. The only recording I've ever heard where the oboe solo in the Hoedown has presence and doesn't sound like the oboist was playing offstage.

2 out of 5 stars Mata adds a little spark to Ormandy's tired Copland.......2006-06-12

Eugene Ormandy obviously knew he was stepping on Bernstein's toes by recording Copland's most famous score. Nobody involved could have thought that Ormandy's polite, rhythmically mild Appalachina Spring came close, and his Billy the Kid never hurt anyone in his life. But back then Ormandy was nearly as big a name with the record-buying public as Bernstein, and his fans wouldn't care. As a result, we get gorgeous playing frorm the orchestra and impactful sound--though not the best that Living Stereo has to offer--all in service of very dull performances.

For me, the main attraction was hearing Edurdo Mata's contribution. This talented Mexican maestro died young, and I missed him the first time around. He conducts a lively four scenes from Copland's Rodeo ballet , by far the best thing here, but his El Salon Mexico (ironically for a native-born musician) sounds anemic next to Bernstein's.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Copland.......2003-07-15

There is not a lot to get excited about in this RCA "High Performance" reissue of the works of Aaron Copland. The Ormandy pieces have been available on CD before (not sure about the Mata though), and the remastered sound does not offer any new revelations when comparing the "Billy the Kid" Suite here to its earlier incarnation on RCA Gold Seal (which includes performances conducted by Copland himself -- a better buy!). In general Ormandy's recordings for CBS from the late 1950s and early 60s (now widely available in the Sony Essential Classics series -- I have written numerous reviews), are much better than his later recordings for RCA from the late 1960s and early 1970s. Even though the Philadelphia Orchestra still shines, there must have been something more fun about doing it the first time around for Ormandy. Mata, on the other hand, is clearly a rung below Ormandy and his performances are quite honestly second rate. With so many other classic Copland titles available, many with the conductor himself or the next best thing, Leonard Bernstein (sometimes the composer even preferred Bernstein to himself!), why would you settle for this CD?

What a misleading disk. It is not "super hits", but 2-5 minute sections of of these works. Do NOT buy this disk if you love the pieces that are on it. It will only make you wonder "where'd the rest of the cut go?" MAYBE there are 25 minutes of music total on this whole disk, chopped up into soundbytes. Copeland is rolling over in his grave.

There is something special about this recording of the Lincoln Portrait. The special ingredient is Henry Fonda's baritone Nebraska accent that sends chills down my spine when I hear his narration, even to this day.
