LOVE THIS CD !!!.......2007-03-11

I was looking for a recording of Londonderry Air performed by the Philadelphia Orchestra/Eugene Ormandandy. After listening to several sample clips on this CD, I ordered it. The entire CD is beautiful and relaxing. It's become one of my favorites.

I want to give it seven stars!.......2004-08-26

This CD is an absolute masterpiece. The title track is a clever Irish riff on Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody, and had me nearly in hysterics without a single sung word. Tommy Fleming's awe-inspiring vocals and Frankie Gavin's jaw-dropping skill on flute and (especially) fiddle are on superb display here. An absolute treasure; highest possible recommendation.

Wonderful CD.......2002-10-03

I don't normally write reviews, but having read some of the ones on this CD I felt I had to give my opinion. Simply put, this is a foot-tapping, humming-along-with-the-music type of cd that brings a smile to your face and sometimes a tear to your eye. The instrumentals are some of the best trad Irish music I've heard and Tommy Fleming's vocals.....simply breathtaking. I don't know about "sappy lyrics" and "Irish phrasing", I just know that when Danny Boy (for example) comes on it makes my heart soar. Each and every song will touch an emotion, and bottom line, that's what music is supposed to do. Right? Different people on each cd, but great music on them all. This one is a definite "Must Have".

Tommy Flemming's Vocals Make This CD Work For Me.......2001-07-25

I discovered this recording through a viewing of the PBS documentary on "Danny Boy," which features many versions of Ireland's great song, including De Dannan's. Knowing nothing about the group's ever-changing line-up and assuming there would be plenty of vocals as purely rendered and moving as the one in the film, I was actually a little disappointed that there wasn't more singing and less jig and fiddle work. When a band reinvents itself as often as De Dannan seems to (even the spelling of the name changes!), it's no surprise that different listeners have differing impressions of what the group does best. For me, a jig is a jig, but a moving and well-sung lyric is a treasure, as are all the vocals here. For "Danny Boy" collectors, Tommy Flemming's may well be the best you'll ever hear. (And don't miss the "Danny Boy" movie, also available from Amazon.com, with versions by everyone from Nana Maskouri and Sinead O'Connor to Eric Clapton and Elvis.)

Excellent tunes, skip the songs........2001-02-03

The instrumentals are as good as DeDannan has ever been. They have a wonderful lift and swing that makes you want to bounce in your seat. Derek Hickey and Frankie Gavin sound fantastic together! Wow!

However, I thought the choice of songs was chintzy and the singing was melodramatic (Though Mr. Flemming DOES have an incredible voice).

For those who like sappy Irish songs, buy this album! For those who prefer traditional Irish music, buy this ablum--and be thankful for the invention of the programmable CD-player!

(And, regardless of whether you LIKE it or not, one can't help but be impressed with the faithful rendering of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" done as an Irish trad instrumental! You have to hear it to believe it.)

Excellent muscianship & a very strong singer........1999-07-15

This is another great offering from Irelands best trad. band. Unfortunately I'm not sure about Tommy Flemmings phrasing and understanding of Irish. Although the power and range of his voice are superb there are times when he sounds as if he is just reading from a page with no knowledge of what he is singing. But throughout the musicians are faultless as ever. Check out their strongest album 'Song For Ireland'.

I am pretty happy with the CD I have. I noticed that these songs are not on other CD. Summer Time in Venice, Three Coins in the Fountain, The Impossible Dream, Send in The Clown, Somewhere My Love and Elizabethan Serenade. The sound quality is acceptable.

The Best Of The Mantovani Orchestra.......2004-04-13

This cd is an ok collection of tunes from Mantovani.It's not the best but it's ok.This 2 cd set features songs such as three coins in a fountain,send in the clowns,skater's waltz,for once in my life and others.This isn't the only version of for once in my life Mantovani did.This version is light strings.Manti's other version is with a harpsicord and heavy strings.It is on Mantovani Scene/Mantovani Sound which has just come out from Vocolion.It also has such songs as dear heart,both sides now,honey and a lot of others.Amazon doesn't have this yet but I have just recieved my copy from another website.Like the other viewer said unfortuanly the sound quality is bad on the best of collection.I even heard somebody coughing on one track and there is some tape hiss from the transfer.I would like to recommend a 2 cd set by John Fox going under the name of the starry night orchestra that is put out by yestermusic(good music group)and has 30 tracks by Mr.Fox.Every song has a heavy string contingment and it states that these were played on beautiful music stations.John Foxes Strings are so beautiful.
The John Fox I'm talking about isn't the same John Fox that is a commedian that is sold on this site.

The Best of the Mantovani Orchestra (vol 1 & 2).......2002-09-14

The Madacy Label has betrayed Mantovani's genious, and substituted poor recordings in these 2 CD's. I have immediately
cancelled all Madacy Label orders with everyone, and will investigate all future items with a Canadian origin prior to purchase.

Poor Recording.......2002-09-05

The quality of the recording is poor. You can hear flutter in the string passages, which is 90% of Mantovani's music! There is also hiss noise, and pops in piece transitions... Amateur transcription from tape to CD's, is my guess. Someone else made bad reviews regarding the poor recording on the same record label, so my suggestion is to stay away from the label Madacy Records.

Top of the "Beautiful Music" Heap.......2001-02-19

This CD has a nice collection of Mantovani's work. The combination of older standards with "newer" (such as Stevie Wonder's "For Once In My Life")is great. This is the stuff that is usually mocked as "elevator music" but also considered by many good romancing background music. Many of these arrangements were heard on a local Beautiful Music FM station where I live before the format change. The only negative I have is for a "box set" there is no write-up on the Orchestra. It would have been nice to read about Mantovani and what inspired his arrangements, and the orchestra personnell. My copy was made in Canada by Madacy. Maybe someone who has contact with that company could recommend a booklet for any future copies made.

The Irish Massenet discovers America!.......2004-03-16

This collection of mostly pre-operetta Herbert is full of surprises. He is truly the "Irish Massenet" for the inventiveness and magnificence of his orchestral palette. The "Irish Wagner" comparison with which he was saddled after his "Irish Rhapsody" has always been idiotic. His "March", his "Rhapsody" and the instrumental excerpts from his opera "Natoma" are all breathtaking but I must reserve the bulk of my praise for the 30-minute "Columbus Suite", which was conceived for a project that never came to fruition, a "spectatorio" intended to accompany a kind of diorama of Columbus' travels that would have been performed at the 1893 Chicago World Fair (the "Columbus Exposition") as sort of predecessor to the last century's widescreen movies. The music describes a moving arc of longing climaxing in the inevitable "Triumph". But the 8-minute 3rd movement, "Murmurs of the Sea", is the real surprise: it describes a very calm sea in suspended anticipation and with a kind of mystical minimalism (a full three quarters of a century before Philip Glass), but with such life and colour that it of course makes Mr. Glass' compositions appear for what they are: the boring, lazy, inept Muzak intended for the waiting rooms of some yet unopened circle of Hell. Historical note: "Murmurs of the Sea" was premiered a full two years (1903) before Debussy's "La Mer" (1905). Infer from that what you will... This album is worth buying at any price.

A big surprise from the master of the operetta.......2000-05-18

The wonderful Naxos American Classics series is full of surprises. After firmly associating Victor Herbert with memorable melodies based on banal lyrics, we now get (8.559027) played by the Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra (Bratislava) under Keith Brion.

The opening "Auditorium Festival March" is pure Sousa out of Germany where Herbert learned his craft, while the "Irish Rhapsody" recalls the more familiar tunes from his land of birth. The third cut gives us a quarter hour of selections from his opera "Natoma," and very impressive they are.

HE HAS DONE BETTER, MUCH BETTER.......2000-07-10

This is the companion volume to CLASSICAL JUKEBOX Vol. 1 with Eugene Ormandy (see my review). Here we have André Kostelanetz leading his orchestra or the New York Philharmonic. The program is quite varied, going from Bach (AIR ON THE G STRING) to Weill (MACK THE KNIFE). Generally, the sound of this compilation is quite good and the recording technique superior. But this suffers in the fact that some items such as the BLUE DANUBE WALTZ by Strauss seem to be played at a pops tempo, not the real unhurried symphonic tempo. Other pieces such as the Alford COLONEL BOGEY MARCH are played with such over-bearing forces that one is left without any sense of musicality. Kostelanetz has done much better, I remember an LP of the 60's presenting 24 of the world's greatest waltzes. It had everything in the right places. This CD has little to say musically, though many could find it enjoyable.

Album Description

American pianist Richard Dowling performs virtually all of Gershwin's original works for solo piano along with several new transcriptions of Gershwin improvisations from disc recordings and player piano rolls. Dowling transcribed several of the tracks himself including a world premiere of Gershwin's own three-minute rendition of the main theme of "Rhapsody in Blue." Rounding out the disc are Earl Wild's Seven Virtuoso Etudes on Themes by Gershwin.

I heard one of Dowling's concerts and he's awesome! I play this CD in my car and almost got a speeding ticket because of it. Richard really knows the Gershwin style. It's upbeat and a lot of fun to listen to over and over.

Richard's got the most amazing fingers (and ears)! He's such a good pianist that you'll swear you're hearing old George playing himself. If you love music from 1920s and 30s New York, this is about as authentic as it gets. The Earl Wild pieces at the end will blow you away. You'll want to listen to this CD over and over because the music is happy and the execution is perfect.

The masterful work displayed on this CD is a pleasure to listen to. The speed with which the keystrokes are perfectly executed is simply astounding. I have only had the CD for about a week and have enjoyed it completely many times.
