For better or worse, John Williams has completely reshaped the art of the soundtrack. His scores for Star Wars, E.T., and Jaws are simply unforgettable, and his knack for tugging at our heartstrings is uncanny. John Williams: Greatest Hits 1969-1999 collects 30 years of the composer's best-loved themes into one double-CD package. You'll find all the soundtrack moments you'd expect from Indiana Jones, Close Encounters, and Schindler's List, along with a few surprises (The Reivers Americana-filled main theme and Williams's 1984 Olympic theme, for starters). Most of the earlier works have been digitally rerecorded by Williams, so while you may not get the original recording of these works here, nothing shows its age. And although we really do get only his "greatest hits" (the longest track is the nearly 10-minute-long Close Encounters theme), most of these soundtracks can be purchased in their entirety for the true aficionado. John Williams may be an acquired taste, but this set proves why--year after year--he scores some of the most successful films Hollywood can produce. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
An excellent survey of this great film composer's music.......2007-06-15
John Willams' film music is of such high quality it still holds up away from its source material.
Williams not only has the talent to write memorable melodies but to expertly interpolate themes from the story into his scores, for example the drum rolls in "JFK" evoking the president's funeral procession and the mournful bugle calls in "Born on the Fourth of July".
Williams also employs a variety of styles, but never gratuitously, always to the service of the film. His "Jaws" theme is as legendary as the violin shrieks from Bernard Herrman's famous score for "Psycho".
The performances are excellent - only the "Born on the Fourth of July" performance exposes some thinness in the string section of the Boston Pops Orchestra.
There is much to enjoy here for film and music lovers alike.
It's my second copy!.......2007-03-09
This is by far the best driving music! Especially on those long desert roads.Adventure lies ahead for you when the Indiana Jones soundtrack is blasting from the dashboard of the car. Kids Love this CD Buy it now!
I could listen to it a 100's and never get tired!.......2007-02-17
It's wonderfull, even my teenagers listen to it! I think we have played Jurassic Park and Hook 100 times.
Good music collection - very inspirational.......2007-01-22
I use the music on this CD as background when I give awards during track. It's very inspirational & uplifting to the athletes. They love it.
very enjoyable.......2007-01-16
This was an excellent collection and my teen requested it but we all enjoy the themes. It is fun to know how many you actually can guess just from familiarity. I recommend it for John Williams fans.

Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20
A great trip down memory lane. The selections sound just like I remember them from the movies and the radio. Enjoy
Henry Mancini's Greatest Hits.......2005-07-13
This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,
enjoy!!

You've got to hand it to the Baha Men. Not only have they made a good living plying freewheeling, playful island music, they've been smart and lucky enough to have a dozen-odd songs placed in movies and television. Perhaps the most surprising thing about Baha Men's Greatest Movie Hits is that several of their admittedly lightweight numbers are more memorable than the films they accompanied (My Father the Hero, anyone?). In addition to the ubiquitous "Who Let the Dogs Out," we get tunes from Scooby Doo ("Scooby D"), Shrek ("Best Years of Our Lives"), an Elton John cover borrowed from Crocodile Hunter: Collision Course ("Crocodile Rock," naturally), Big Fat Liar ("Move It Like This"), plus several TV shows and kids' flicks. The key word here is joyful--whether the men are singing, rapping, howling, or literally barking like dogs, the mood is up, up, up. The perfect patio platter. --Kim Hughes

Customer Reviews:
I Lost My Doggy!.......2004-11-23
The Baha men rock my world! And that is hard to do since I listen to country, but this is an exception. This is the only rap music that my mom approves of. She tells me that everything else is evil, so the only kind of music she permits me to listen to is country. The Baha men are good rap fun! They are way better than 2 Pac and The Beastie Boys and even JZ. Who let the dogs out is a classic song! Baha men, come let my dogs out! Good-Bye!
Oy Guvalt!.......2003-05-30
Well, boys and girls, after a short career and a grand total of one hit (why that became a hit I'll never know), the Baha Men release a - get this - greatest hits album.
WHAAAAAT??!?!?
It's bad enough they released "Who Let The Stupid Dogs Out", but now they're releasing a whole album of clones? What is the matter with the record company? This is the kind of album that nine-year-olds buy and then regret buying when they're twelve. Parents, I'll just say this: If you buy this for your kids, make sure you have some aspirin nearby. I'm just going to stop here, reviewing this "album" any further is a waste of my time and yours.
Good compromise.......2003-05-23
Tired of listening to those kids' songs to keep your children happy during long car trips? Try this. The kids like it and so will you. (Unless you have no sense of humour, in which case you shouldn't have had kids in the first place.)
BaHa-in Hits.......2003-03-23
The BaHa Men are not exactly a big time favorite of mine, but I'm not disappointed with the purchase of this CD. Their smooth harmonies and groovy, energetic rhythms can effectively be fun for listening. I've come to like a good proportion of the songs here, from the positive lyrics in track number twelve: You Can Get It, to the humorous definition of life in track number eleven, Rat Race. Plus love the classic Lion Sleeps Tonight "wee-ee" backups sung in: You All Dat. At first, I found their performance of Accident, song number four, a little funny for the fact that it sounds like they're pronouncing it more like "oxidant" instead of accident. But the song is amusing and I've come to really enjoy it.
I've only seen a few of the movies that appear in this collection and thanks to experiencing some previous soundtracks that have featured them; their music style has begun to grow on me. The main reason I wanted this CD was for Crocodile Rock, because I haven't been able to find it anywhere else. If you don't have any BaHa Men in your party music collection, than this album is as good as any for single handedly obtaining their well-known songs.
This is a two CD set, one being the audio collection, having all the songs one thru twelve. The second CD is a DVD with the music videos to: Who Let The Dogs Out, Move It Like This and You All Dat. This video bonus feature appears to be of good quality.
a cool cd to get your party on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2003-03-13
one of the cds i can listen to all day is this it is so cool even if its 1000000000000000000 bucks u should get it. They are all good but not number 13 oh father yuck.

Judy Garland's almost 30 years in the movie industry provide some of her brightest moments. And Judy Garland in Hollywood is a near-perfect retrospective of her classic vocals for The Wizard of Oz, For Me and My Gal, Meet Me in St. Louis, Easter Parade, and numerous other celluloid musical favorites. She swings on tunes like "The Trolley Song" (from St. Louis), and on A Star Is Born's "Gotta Have Me Go with You," she shows the vocal finesse and maturity of her later years. Of the 23 cuts, there's not a single dud, and the sound quality is excellent. Few collections more accurately show a career from start to finish: on "The Texas Tornado," we hear a 14-year-old girl brimming with confidence and bounce, but by 1962's "Little Drops of Rain," Garland's pacing has slowed, her voice more full-throated and autumnal. A great set. --Jason Verlinde
Customer Reviews:
The best of the best of Judy in the movies........2007-04-10
It's been quite easy for me to forget about Judy's incredible acting talent, as I have a lot of non-movie performances on my playlist, so I tend to get wrapped up in her vocal and performing talents. However, with this gorgeous compilation of the best of her movie songs, I also remember what an incredible ACTRESS Judy was as well. Unlike singers and actors today, who either can do one well but not the other or can't do either one very well, Judy was supremely talented at both. And this compilation covers her entire movie career, from The Pigskin Parade, which she made on loan to 20th Century Fox, to her final movie, I Could Go On Singing. Within a period of 1 hour, 18 minutes, and 53 seconds, you can hear her transition from sweet-voiced teenage belter to the deep throaty-voiced woman she would become later in life. You can also hear that she never lost that incredible talent for singing. Even though the sound of her voice changed over the years, it's youthful exuberance stripped away by alcohol, drugs, and just living a tragic life, the emotion and intensity could NOT be stripped from her voice. This collection proves it.
There's not a single dud on these CDs, and the sound quality is excellent. Many of the older tracks do have some hiss to them, as well as the occasional sound anomaly, which is to be expected. However, everything has been beautifully remastered and sounds incredible. The liner notes and packaging PERIOD are also incredible. Very informative and include lots of great pictures. And I might be weird, but I actually like the cover art. It's nice and whimsical, although from far away, or in pics made really small, it CAN make her look like something of a dominatrix. *Now THERE'S a side of Judy you thought you'd never see. ;)* But the cariacature's actually quite cute, and I just think it's a cute cover.
Judy would sadly pass away six years after the last tracks on this compilation were recorded. Although she may be dead in the physical sense, as long as her films and audio recordings like these are available to the public, Judy will never really die in the hearts of the public, and she will never be forgotten. There's only one Judy Garland, and there will never be another like her.
Judy 101.......2006-11-28
Judy Garland was America's finest entertainer ever; and I doubt we'll ever see another one quite like her. She could dance; she could act; but oh, how she could sing! This CD offers people an excellent retrospective of both Judy's best known hits as well as her lesser known songs from her movies.
The CD starts off strong with "The Texas Tornado" recorded in 1936 when Judy was just 14 years old. You'd never know she was an adolescent when she recorded this. Judy's voice at 14 was already extremely powerful and rather mature as well.
The next track is one of my favorites because it is so romantic and sweet: "Dear Mr. Gable/You Made Me Love You (I Didn't Want To Do It.)" The sound is excellent; and the musical arrangement is perfect. The MGM musicians make excellent use of the violins as Judy sings and even speaks a little about her crush on Clark Gable. This track is followed by her infamous ballad, "Over The Rainbow." Judy's voice here is flawless; she sings so beautifully and she emotes so well. Harold Arlen wrote an excellent musical arrangement for "Over The Rainbow" which combined with Judy's voice makes me swear that a magical place located beyond a rainbow is real and not imaginary.
Other classics on this CD include "The Trolley Song" from Meet Me In Saint Louis; "On The Atchison, Topeka, And The Santa Fe" from The Harvey Girls; "Easter Parade" from the movie of the same name; "Get Happy" from the movie Summer Stock and "The Man That Got Away" from A Star Is Born. Nobody but Judy could sing these songs so flawlessly. When Judy sang these songs she just didn't sing the way another singer would. Judy would sing so passionately in such a singularly beautiful, sensitive way that somehow you could instantly identify with her character's joy, her character's wanting to fit in, her character's heartache over a lost love.
The CD boasts some terrific songs that are less well known but just as wonderful. "I'm Nobody's Baby" from Andy Hardy Meets Debutante is a sad song about how she doesn't "fit into" any social scene because she isn't just a kid anymore but she isn't quite an adult yet either. There is also the hauntingly beautiful "Last Night When We Were Young" which is an outtake from the movie In The Good Old Summertime. "Happy Harvest" is a joyful song that Judy performs in the movie Summer Stock; and "By Myself" is a gut-wrenching number from her last film entitled I Could Go On Singing.
Will Friedwald contributes an extensive essay which sticks mostly to Garland's professional career; and there are wonderful photos of Judy as well. There's even a lovely black and white photo of Judy and her two sisters taken in 1942 when Judy was working on the movie entitled Presenting Lily Mars. The songs credits are provided and the recording dates for each song are there as well. Moreover, the sound quality is excellent; the remastering of these tracks to digital form is excellent.
There will never be another Judy. This CD proves it. As you listen to Judy's performances on this CD, you become increasingly impressed and enchanted as you listen to each song. By the time the CD ends you want more just as Judy's audiences always wanted more whenever she gave a live performance. If you like this CD, I highly recommend the two CD set of Judy at Carnegie Hall from 2001 (the fortieth anniversary edition); the CD entitled Classic Garland: Capitol Years 1955-1965 and the CD entitled That Old Feeling: Classic Ballads from the Judy Garland Show. Of course, if you also like those, you'll be well on your way to discovering even more CDs and movies that feature this singularly talented artist, the incomparable Judy Garland.
GREAT CD.......2006-03-01
Judy Garland is a legend. I recommend this CD for any Judy Garland fan. I highly recommend it to all the young people out there who are not familiar with her especially if you love to sing!
Nice.......2006-01-15
because I love that kind og music, is all very OK.
Miracles Made in Culver City.......2005-09-08
I've always wondered if MGM, which was known for its musicals, would have been the industry leader in that category if little Miss Gum hadn't come along in the late '30's. This is a great compilation of Judy's best from nearly 20 years of MGM movies... and nearly every song will make you remember the film and specific scene it came from. You'll "see" Judy at the mirror as she expresses her love for Clark Gable with "You Made Me Love You," you'll "see" her bouncing on the trolley as it hurtles down a street in old St. Louis, you'll "see" her leading that wonderful gang of Harvey Girls as she salutes the "Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe." They say that music is "emotional shorthand;" this CD is a time machine to the 1930's and '40s... when Culver City was the entertainment capitol of the universe.

Memory Lane revisited.......2007-04-11
This is a very nice CD collection that I enjoy very much. They are original recordings so you have to be aware that a couple of the older songs sound scratchy just like they did when you put the record on the record player. It was a shame they couldn't get a crisper sound with all the new technology but it does make you aware how the sound quality has improved over the years. This would make a great gift to anyone over 50. I put mine in the car and just sing away and before I know it I am at my destination. This would be a great collection to take on a trip.
YOUNGER THAN 70 BUT..........2007-04-10
Even though I am not 70 years old, I knew most of the music, and this collection is excellent. I chose some songs and put them on my i-pod. This collection is worth every penny. Enjoy it!

Tammy's in Love and April Love and..........2006-07-01
This is a wonderful collection of the most popular love songs from hit films of the late '50s. Debbie Reynolds singing "Tammy's in Love" from the charming movie Tammy and the Bachelor has haunted my dreams since childhood. And it's not just me; "Tammy" was #1 on the charts and was the THE top soundtrack single for ALL of the 1950s; and another version done by the Ames Bros. went to #5 on the charts.
Also there's teen idol Pat Boone singing "April Love" and the very popular Doris Day with "Que Sera Sera" and also "Love is a Many Splendored Thing" and... well you can read the titles above. This is a great collection of love ballads.

This first installment of Sci-Fi's Greatest Hits opens, appropriately, with two famous pieces, "2001: A Space Odyssey" (a.k.a. the prelude to Strauss's Also sprach Zarathustra) and "Star Wars" (a.k.a. John Williams's variation on Holst's The Planets), and further mines film and TV history for interstellar anthems. Much of this stuff is predictable; different selections from films like The Black Hole and Blade Runner would have been more interesting. Yet there are diamonds in the rough, including the eerily disjointed theme to Planet of the Apes, the psychedelic electronic swirl of Dr. Who, and the squealing strings of Alien (before such a concept became cinema cliché). This is a decent dedication to those brave souls exploring the furthest reaches of space. --Bryan Reesman

For the Most Part, A Great Collection.......2007-01-27
No various artists CD collection is going to be perfect, and "Final Frontiers" is no exception. Still, I am quite pleased with this compilation.
Yes, it's true: the tracks for "Star Wars", "The Empire Strikes Back", and "Return of the Jedi" are re-records and not from the original soundtrack. But now the good news: unless you already own the original soundtrack CDs and know them by heart, you'd think that these WERE the originals. They're that good. "Star Wars" (Track 2) starts with the opening credits music, including music from the opening battle scene, then segues nicely into a medley inspired by the closing credits music. "Empire Strikes Back" (Track 3) is the Imperial March/Darth Vader's theme. (Gotta love that, right?) "Return of the Jedi" (Track 4) is the least of the three, not unlike the movie itself.
For people looking to add to their musical library, might I suggest also picking up Sony's "Classical Hits" compilation CD, also available on Amazon. That version includes the "Battle of the Fates" music from Phantom Menace, as well as music from other movies, like Gladiator, Braveheart, and Titanic. Even better, all of the aforementioned tracks on the "Classical Hits" CD ARE the original soundtrack recordings. So by just purchasing that CD and this one, "Final Frontiers", you'll have plenty of great movie music at your fingertips.
A few other quick observations about "Final Frontiers":
The "Star Trek" theme (Track 5) varies slightly from the version heard on the TV show. I have to believe that this is not the original Alexander Courage recording from 1966, but instead a re-recording. Let your own ears be the judge.
The Amazon track listings for the "Lost in Space" themes are in error. Track 7 is actually the theme from the 1967 season, followed by the 1965 season theme(Track 8). No big. Both tunes, composed by John Williams, would appear the studio originals. Which is a good thing, because 1967 season theme is hard to find on CD.
The sound quality for the theme from "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (Track 12) is atrocious. And I don't mean from an audiophile's perspective. Your average sound novice will listen to that track and think, "Where was that music recorded, in somebody's toilet?"
Personal faves, like "Planet of the Apes", "Dr. Who", "Total Recall", "Battlestar Galactica" (Lorne Greene version) and the wonderfully cheesy "Space 1999" theme are all here, and are all studio originals.
Overall, a great purchase.
disappointment........2005-07-01
Disappointment. To tell the truth, I have purchased this CD mainly because of the "Alien" movie theme. Therefore was very disappointed - the theme was reduced, as it seems to me, on 70 %. The same is with the "Abyss" theme - you will hear drums only... Music from Blade Runner sounds strange - not like Vangelis. I regret, that has bought this CD.
Interesting !!....but beware.......2002-04-17
Whoa !! When I first saw this on Amazon, I did not hesitate to grab hold of this as soon as possible. There they are.....all the themes from TV and movies from the 60s to 90s that I've always wanted. But sadly, halfway through the CD, I felt a bit disappointed as not all are originals (and I wonder why they could not get their hands on them, since this CD is priced at premium). So beware of the following :
Track 1 : Space Odyssey to Track 4 : Return of the Jedi
These are NOT originals, but recorded by other orchestras.
Tracks 5 to 25 : are originals, containing many interesting TV themes from the 60s and 70s, except that, the theme of Buck Rogers is so badly mastered that it sounds as if it was recorded with a microphone direct from the TV box. They should have just dumped this track if they could not get a better recording.
Track 26 : Blade Runner is the recording by the New American orchestra, and NOT the original by Vangelis.
Tracks 28 to 33 : they are originals from the TV, but most are too short and some merely contains snippets of sounds and voices, not really worth listening.
But, overall this is a must buy, as you can only get all these themes together in this volume.
Great sci-fi memories.......2001-06-26
"Sci-Fi's Greatest Hits, Vol. 1: Final Frontiers" is an anthology CD that collects science fiction music from film and television. The themes included span in time from the late 1950s to the late 1990s.
This CD is a lot of fun, and will evoke a lot of memories for those of us who have enjoyed these shows and movies (either first run or in syndication). Many of sci-fi's most famous musical cues are here: the opening fanfare from "2001: A Space Odyssey," the theme from the original "Star Trek" (complete with the memorable narration), the "Dr. Who" theme, and more. Overall, a great treat for sci-fi fans.

Oh god, I didn't....Did I?.......2003-11-27
Now when this musical medley happened to come into my position through the one they call Amazon, I was damn excited. I grabbed myself a big ole' bowl o' me favorite popper corn, and sat myself in front of my stereo system. My smile of anticipation soon turned to utter disgust when the Top Gun theme blew through my eardrums. I started to shake and realized....this was beyond horrible, it was just sickening(with a hint of pain). I soon realized that my money would have been well spent elsewhere, maybe on, dare I say.....Something else. Well thats that for you, fellow fans. Don't get me wrong, I loved watching the ole' movies, but I was not reminded even once of the magic I had breathed in when viewing them.
Down with the synthesizer that spat on such great tunes as these.
Sincerely,
The Coz

Untitled.......2005-06-18
This is the third volume of Neil Norman's synth-pop versions of Science Fiction music. If you are into Science Fiction soundtracks, you will probably enjoy it. Although "Raiders of the Lost Ark" isn't Science Fiction by any stretch of the imagination. Like on the other albums in this series, Neil cheats a little by throwing in a couple of his own original compositions that weren't actually written for television or the movies ("Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet" and "Into the Alternate Universe".) There is an unlisted 19th track here, which is a barely audible recording of a woman saying, "You have just interfaced the Greatest Science Fiction Hits by Neil Norman."
"Who goes there".......2000-03-23
This third installment of "Greatest Science Fiction Hits" is getting better and probably the best thus far. Norman blends almost 50 years of themes with some surprises.
Howard Hawk's - "The Thing From Another World" was loosely based on a short story by John Campbell - "Who Goes There", excellent directing from Hawk's and a wonderful theme and score by Dimitri Tiomkin. Norman captures the moment with this arrangement of the title THE THING (1951). Another stand out - H.G. Well's classic - WAR OF THE WORLD'S (1953) this pretty scary and tense sci-fi thriller with fantastic special effects was and still is a trip to the viewer and listener. The highlight is - THE PRISONER (1967) star and creator Patrick McGoohan as Number 6, an unnamed agent who is sent to "The Village" for rehabilitation, Grainger's theme is an upbeat version of a piece originally called - "The Age of Elegance". THE PRISONER theme is not heard on many compilations, this is a refreshing and pleasant surprise.
A "must have" for all sci-fi and film collectors of scores and soundtracks.
Total Time: 39:13 on 19 Tracks/(19 track untitled and hidden)/GNP-Crescendo Records - GNPD 2163 (1986)
Neil Norman still warping along.......1999-04-14
Neil Norman's third CD of SF music features a blend of themes from almost fifty years of Science Fiction cinema and TV. The best treatments are "The Thing from Another World", "War of the Worlds", and "Lost in Space 1 & 2". Norman's respect and affection for genre music is evident throughout the CD.
