Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not A Music Critic ... But A Lover Of All Music ..........2006-08-29

Let's not be too harsh regarding this CD. I purchased this as my first baby step into the classical genre and it absolutely made me fall in love with classical music and appreciate it in a way I never could when people tried to make me like it. It is such a wide variety of classical music and I find romance to be joyful, tragic, gentle, harsh & a complete roller coaster that I found all in this ONE CD! It also made my boyfriend who hates, or shall I say HATED classical music NOW like it! That was an amazing feat! We now have many classical cd's and we always go back to this one for dinner parties, romantic baths and other things... I played this CD so much, that it got damaged and I just purchased another one to replace the one I bought years ago. If you are a critic, stay away from this cd, you will rob it of its beauty & innocence. If you are a beginner and want to open your mind to all that classical music has to offer, then this is the best money you can spend. BUY & ENJOY!!!

3 out of 5 stars Misleading title scheme.......2006-01-01

This is what bothered me about the CD. Three of the biggest eras in classical music were: the baroque era, the classical era, and the romantic era. Now, with CD's titled baroque favorites, classical favorites and romantic classics, one would expect these CD's to be era specific. Such is not the case. If you read the back of the CD it even says "from the romantic era of music", but the there are composers like Vivaldi (baroque) and Debussy (impressionism) on this CD. About more than half are from the wrong eras. So this music is romantic in the non-musical sense of the word, which is fine, but a little bit misleading.

2 out of 5 stars Don't Bother...Really!.......2005-02-21

Not what I call classical composers! THis cd is annoying in a way I really can't stand. It lacks the pure elegance of the classical days. Don't buy this cd unless you want a phony all around bad album played by cheap ameteurs.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better.......2004-02-19

I think the quality is good, and better on a few tracks, but all these romantic tracks?? Not what I listened to. Actually I was kind of disappointed; I had purchased an abundance of the "Favorites" collection some were better than others.
I was kind of perturbed when some same tracks on this CD were on another CD, and visa versa.

Still, I suppose for the price, one can't go wrong.

3 out of 5 stars Some great tracks, but flawed nonetheless.......2004-01-12

Whether or not this CD lives up to its promise of "Romantic" music is not truly a concern, being that the entire nature of classical music is that it is open to one's own interpretation. However, I can speak to the quality of the recordings themselves.

A few of the tracks (Reverie, Canon, Sarabande, a few others) are absolutely superb. Well recorded, and played with genius bravado, coupled with great arrangements (it was interesting to hear Reverie outside of its native instrument, the Piano). Most of the tracks, however, are absolutely horrid. Fur Elise for the sheer amateurish quality, Vivaldi's Concerto for oboe and strings sounds like it was copied from an old phonograph record, as does Tchaikovsky's Sleeping Beauty Suite, Mendelssohn's Spring Song, and Puccini's Gianni Schicci, and a few others. A few other tracks still are played horribly, most of them already mentioned.

All in all, for the price you are getting quite a few good tracks, but don't expect stellar quality. I would instead recommend Chopin's Nocturnes and Mozart's and Tchaikovsky's Piano concertos of you're looking for something romantic.

5 out of 5 stars Harnoncourt brings a little gitty up to Mozart!.......2006-11-21

After acquiring Harnoncourt's 2 vols (4 cds) of Mozart's early symphonies, I noticed this collection. This is not quite a complete Mozart symphony cycle. It is lacking some of the early Symphonies. Harnoncourt's contribution to this collection is found on the last 5 and a half cds and covers Mozart's middle and later symphonies. So, by combining the early with the later I get an almost complete Mozart Symphony cycle conducted by Harnoncourt. There are a few of the middle symphonies that are not touched by Harnoncourt's early volumes or this present set. I found them on vinyl at Ebay or here at Amazon marketplace for outrageous sums of money (more than this present set!). It looks like what I have will have to do.

When I think of Beethoven, I think of his 9th symphony and when it was performed, he could not hear a single note because he was deaf! When I think of Mozart, I am picturing an 8 year old who caused his dad to retire early from music composition! Harnoncourt writes that as an 8 year old, Mozart was already head and shoulders above just about any composer on the continent of Europe. Mozart's 40th and especially his 41st symphonies are true epiphanies. Yet the sound heard in these is the same as that by 8 year old Mozart! Mozart did not start composing and then 20 years later develop his voice. I love Mozart's music for the beauty, the balance and the mathematical precision. I love Beethoven's for the power and the thunder. Yet, who can top the beauty of the softer movements in his symphonies such as the 3rd in his 9th?

My standard for Mozart's symphonies (his last seven) and Beethoven's Nine are found on vinyl conducted by Bohm. I bought the DG Bohm recordings on vinyl back in the 70s and was so pleased with both the recording quality and the superb playing I did not have any other renditions (except Karajan) until recently.

There is a complete Mozart Symphony DG collection by Bohm that has been ported over to digital. But I was a little curious what a fresh, digital recording would sound like, how it would stack up to Bohm. I was also curious to compare the smaller orchestra with period instruments to the full orchestra with modern instruments used by Bohm. I also bought the complete Pinnock Mozart cycle recorded with a smaller orchestra than Bohm's and period instruments. Of the two, Pinnock sounds more like Bohm than Harnoncourt.

The period instruments/smaller orchestras have a little more harpsicord and not as full an orchestra sound. If its too much harpsicord, I end up pinching myself to make sure I did not accidentally play Vivaldi or Teleman. The less than full sound is more chamber orchestra style than full orchestra. I can hear more of the individual instruments and their resonating than the blended sound of the fuller orchestra. Pinnock supposedly used 20 to 30 players. But while Bohm may have had a "full" orchestra, it certainly is not full in the Wagner sense of full. I have been to concerts that featured both Mozart and later Romantic composers. The Orchestra pit seemed a little less than half full when its Mozart and bursting at the sides when its Wagner or Mahler. I enjoy the "full" orchstra sound and I really like the smaller chamber type sound. I do not live in an "either/or" universe. Buy both! No classical music Nazi can tell you otherwise. Its all about Freedom, baby!

I am still digesting Harnoncourt's rendition of Mozart's last 6 symphonies. The tempos and the overall playing sounds much different than Bohm or Pinnock. The tempos seem to not be as consistently precise and they seem to shift, that is why I my title says "Mozart with a little gitty up." That being said, I enjoyed both Pinnock and Harnoncourt. I do not regret for a moment shelling out close to $50 for this set!

Bohm's analog records sound good. These didgital recordings sound really GOOD! PURE, maybe even a little too sanitized. The period instrument movenent is trying to approximate the 1700s sound with Mozart, yet you will never hear a cough or any other sound other than the instruments producing music. This includes the bow sounds when the bow comes on or off the instrument. These Bass bowing sounds are left on Karjan's DVD Beethoven Symphony Cycle. To really approximate the 1700s, we need a group of 2nd rate musicians playing on third or fourth rate instruments in concert halls with less than idealic acoustics. If we are going to get real, lets really get real. I bet Mozart would have walked a half mile barefoot over shards of broken glass to have his music played by orchestras such as the BPO or the Vienna Phil conducted by Bohm. And I will bet dollars to donuts any day that any of our smaller city orchestras such as Pasadena CA or Omaha Nebraska would blow the socks off of just about all of the top orchestras of Mozart's day. Maybe the period instrumenters should break out the old analog recording equipment like the Musical Heritage Society from 30 years ago and press their recordings on 78s or 10 inch LPs. So, while they may be using instruments similar to those used in the 1700s, we are still getting a very professional modern sound and recording. Don't kid yourself that if you buy Pinnock or Harnoncourt Mozart Symphony recordings, when you listen, you will be suddenly teleported as a classical music Yankee back to King Arthur's Court.

I converted Pinnock and this present 250th anniversary edition set to CD-R mp3s at 192 kps. 90 to 100 kps is supposedly FM radio quality and anything above 170 kps only your dog will enjoy. 192kps will yield a little over 8 hours of music on a 702 mb CD-R. I can play a cd at work and let it run all day long filling my life with the world's greatest music.

I still am still debating the period instrument movement. Yet, the music is still MOZART! MOZART! Bohm (died circa 1981), Harnoncourt, and Pinnock are superb conductors and their musicians are top notch. None of these conductors nor their orchestras screw up Mozart! You may disagree, yet let me point out that these gents and their orchestras have filled concert halls for decades and have very loyal followings of musically satiated listeners. Believe it or not, sometimes 10,000 Frenchmen are not wrong.

You may or may not like Mozart with a little "gitty up" but you surely will not get typhoid fever from listening! Chill out, it is still Mozart! Old Wolfgang himself were he alive would be sitting front row, center aisile with a big bag of chips and a cold Tecate having the time of his life listening to Harnoncourt and his Orchestra.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A gateway drug, nothing more, nothing less. .......2007-03-11

To say that this album constitutes a necessity for the classical music enthusiast would be a great big unarguable lie. It has nothing innovative to offer you as a listener, except for maybe the labelling of melodies such as "My Heart Will Go On" (that god-awful Love Theme from the gruesome film Titanic) as a worthy member of "Best Classics 100". But than again, every collection of things that does not naturally belong together, is bound to have at least one outcast where the connection clearly isn't based on anything but cost and sale-ability.

This might sound like the beginning of a CD-slaughter, or a snobbish review where only the Deutche Grammophone's recordings are meting my standards, but although I am fairly picky when it comes to musical collections, best of albums, and such horrifying destructions of the universality of the works and the intentions of the artist behind it, I am willing to give this collection another chance, since classical music is somewhere between Arabic and wine in degree of unmanageability. It also helps that all the tunes are familiar to almost every one of us, and the fact that the artists' intentions probably got killed by the hundreds of different conductors trying to convey their personal interpretation of the works.

What I am saying is that this CD can be to classical music enthusiast what 'absolute rock' can be to a rock enthusiast, or to someone slightly interested, with no conceptual frames of where to start the search for knowledge. "Best Classics 100" offers nothing except a selection of melodies where there's bound to be one for every taste, but where the album feeling, the entirety or completeness intended by the composer, or conductor, or performer is completely lost in a trade-off made with variety.

The collection is attempted organised by giving each CD a different theme, supposedly to describe the mood of the music, and the labeller succeeds only to a limited extent as we move from themes such as 'uplifting' and 'relaxing' towards 'golden'. I wonder what that golden feeling constitutes. It apparently is to be found in, amongst others, "Jesus Bleibet Meine Freunde", and in "My Heart Will Go On"?

But no matter how I try to describe this CD it will sound worse than it actually is. This because to me it works as a great reference to which I can always turn with my classical music questions. Was it Schumann or Schubert who were the sad one? Of all the -inis, which where which again? Who composed "O Mio Babbino Caro"? The starting point for finding out if you belong to the romantic or the renascence wing, lies within this assemblage, if you look with your ears.

If you feel that classical music is something you like, and you'd like to learn more about it, this is a way to get started. If used together with a book on classical music, or wikipedia, it can be a gateway drug, leading you towards the great different experiences to be found within the different genres of classical music, and within the different periods ranging from the 12th century, maybe even earlier, towards yesterdays and tomorrows spectacular compositions of melodies that conveys a feeling, a state of mind with much more precision than any other musical genre. Expect a fairly alright collection of classical prunes, and you won't be disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Selection, But..........2005-04-21

...The Audio Quality is really not great. I bought this CD because I am new to classical, and the price was great! 100 songs for 25 bucks, thats like 25 cents a song, most songs are 1 dollar or more. Now I know why it's cheaper. The audio quality isn't that good. I imported the entire collection to my computer using Apple Lossless, and it sounded fuzzy, not crisp, with background noise, and sounded like compressed music, cutting off the frequency response.
I then played the CD's through my home stereo, with the same results. I plugged in my SHURE E5c headphones and the sound was soft, uninviting, lacking punch, with significant backgound noise (not just from the headphones), which was especially distracting when the music would get softer. I have heard much of the music before, and it was much more dynamic, entertaining, this recording seems too flat.
The music selection is ok, but I was hoping for some more interesting selections from the vast classical genre.
Overall, not that great of a recording, but many might not notice the difference, so if you are new to classical or aren't like an audiophile, get this album because it's a great overview of pop-culture classical, and it's pretty inexpensive.

      5 out of 5 stars A must-have classical music set!.......2005-01-06

Classical music is, by far, my favorite type of music. It can make you happy or sad, it can make you laugh or cry, and it can make you want to fall asleep or get up and dance. This 6-disc set is a must-have for and classical music-lover! It has all the great composers like Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Mozart, Bach, and Pachelbel. Some great songs include: Canon In D(Pachelbel), Morning: Peergynt(Grieg), Adagio For Strings(Barber), Cavatina(Myers), and much, much more. Every classical song you can think of is on here and the sound quality is great. So if you're looking for a good classical music CD, this set is all you need. Be prepared to be blown away!
