5 out of 5 stars Firefall - Elan.......2007-01-22

This was the 3rd release from Firefall and one of my favorites.

5 out of 5 stars Firefall is great!.......2007-01-21

Very cool sounds from the 70's. Every song is very good. No need to skip any song. Just put it on and push play. Takes you back to a better and simpler time. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars It's All Good.......2004-12-05

I'm a huge fan of this band as can be seen by my brief reviews of their work, but great songs, close harmonies and quality instrumental work will do it for me every time. Strange Way, Sweet and Sour and Goodbye, I Love You, are three of the best tracks, and once again if you find the Rhino re-issue, you get three bonus tracks and some insightful liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars Breathtaking.......2006-10-10

This young American from San Fransico spent three years, from age nineteen to twenty-two, as the Wailers' lead vocalist, despite not having any prior professional singing experience; one listen to his voice, and one can understand why. Elan often sounds as though Bob Marley came back to earth just to drop a few new tracks, particularly on the gorgeous song, "I Wanna Yell," a song he wrote after travelling the world and view economic injustices wherever he went. The album showcases his talents through songs that are dancehall, reggaeton-esque, and just plain reggae, and features guest singers Tami Chynn, Assasin, and Cutty Ranks.

A classic!

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary.......2006-09-06

Elan's voice is golden, particularly in the first song, Nothing is Worth Losing You, and in the title track Together As One. The song Together As One instantly became my new favorite song. In my opinion, it is as good as any Bob Marley song in existence and that is saying A LOT!!! Extraordinary, Elan. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars Wow what a great CD.......2006-08-28

I saw Elan opening for UB40 and I was very impressed. I recently bought his cd and I caanot get over how good it is. There is only one song that I do not think is great and that is feel my pressure. The rest of the album is fantastic. I am sure we will be seeing many more albums from Elan in the future.

3 out of 5 stars Elan Better Live Than on this Studio Release.......2006-08-16

Elan's captivating opening act set at the Chicago House of Blues for headliners UB40 this past summer was incredible. The crowd was mesmerized, most not having any idea that Elan had fronted the Wailer's Band for 3-plus years.

(UB40 got the hint and played an extended stellar two-hour set just to prove they weren't about to be upstaged...)

Most of Elan's material was a preview of "Together As One."

The mix on this CD reminds me of Bunny Ruggs a la post-Third World more than Bob Marely or The Wailers Band.

It might have capped the new debut album nicely to have included a "live" version of "Get Up, Stand Up."

Elan has fantastic potential, all the elements are there.

This CD needed to be less cooked, more raw, more stripped.

Kick out the sound engineers next time and just roll analog!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Reggae releases this summer!.......2006-08-12

Saw him in concert this past March in VEGAS (he opened for UB40). Wow! I was blown away! Awesome voice and great songs. Bought the album and was not disappointed! My favorite is KINGSTON GIRL - awesome song! If you love REGGAE music, do not hesitate in getting this one. Like I said in the title, best new REGGAE ALBUM release this summer - for sure!

Weeks on the road with the likes of Franz Ferdinand and Bloc Party certainly made an impression this Seattle quintet. On the follow-up to 2003's The New Romance, Pretty Girls Make Graves edge away from scratchy indie rock and embrace a more svelte, early '80s inspired post-punk sound. Much of it has to do with the addition of keyboardist Leona Marrs, whose economical melodies put electronics and retro dance grooves at the fore. Tracks like "Pyrite Pedestal" and "Domino" point the way forward, coming across like a hybrid of The Slits and The Fall. But the experimentation doesn't end there. Tracks like prog-ish "The Magic Hour" and punky-reggae "Selling the Wind" pull the band in more directions than it can always handle. Nobody said growing up is easy. --Aidin Vaziri

Album Description

The Seattle quintet's follow-up to the universally acclaimed "The New Romance", and their first album since the addition of keyboardist Leona Marrs, is by far their most ambitious, multifarious, and scorching to date. Produced by Colin Stewart (Black Mountain, Destroyer), "Elan Vital" provides the band with a bigger, bolder canvas with which to weave their magic. The new material, road-tested at gigs around the globe with Bloc Party, Franz Ferdinand, and Death Cab For Cutie, shows a blindingly original American band who are improving with each successive album.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Swan Song for Indie Gold.......2007-07-03

Not much to complain about the last album from Pretty Girls Make Graves except, of course, the fact that it is their last album. With artistic progression evident on all fronts on this release this music fan will be eagerly awaiting future projects from the band's members. Quick note on this album's tunes: For one of the best and catchiest feminist protest/marching song ever check out track 4 (Parade).

4 out of 5 stars Almost scared to listen to their other albums... .......2007-03-27

...'cause of some of the bad reviews this is getting- I really like it! Some great jams emerge as the album winds its way through spooky-cool experimentation. The saccharin ending and useless male vocal tracks are my only gripes.

2 out of 5 stars What Happened?..........2006-11-19

The first time i heard this band was when i stumbled upon their song "speakers push the air". I loved the song so much i decided to buy their album. Well, unfortunately i bought the wrong album and got Elan Vital instead of Good Health. The first song started off with some reggae beat which was cool with me. As I continue listening to the whole album, it didn't quite capture my attention as I had expected. It seemed too mellow in a way. Where was that "umph" that i heard in speakers push air? they have probably tried to evolve from their previous albums. Well, it didn't work out in this one.

1 out of 5 stars Pretty Poor.......2006-11-11

I think some of the other reviewers are being too kind to Pretty Girls Make Graves on this album. They have apparently abandoned their more melodic, interesting songs in favor of simple, boring dance-pop. To make matters worse, they aren't even really very good at dance-pop. Maybe the popularity of bands like Bloc Party has influenced them too much.

The album could have been saved if it had been recorded better and performed with any amount of energy and enthusiasm. It sounds like it was recorded in a closet. This is probably one of the most disappointing releases that I've ever purchased, I'm sorry to say.

Anyone looking for good Pretty Girls Make Graves records should purchase either "Good Health" or "The New Romance" because they are both great records. I can only hope that they return to their own style and put out some better records in the future.

4 out of 5 stars "Magnetic".......2006-07-08

At first, I didn't know what to think of this cd. I have loved PGMG since I heard "Speakers Push the Air" and the rest of Good Health. This cd is a departure from the straight up indie pop/rock that I have become comfortable with to a more artistic sound and it took me awhile to develop my opinion on it. I really like this cd. PGMG have developed their sound, which I believe has a lot to do with their new keyboardist (and you're really going to love when they sing harmony or duel together...it's great). I respect it when a band takes a chance and grows, which is what PGMG did.

Again, I didn't really care for this cd at first because I didn't know what to think of it. There really is no song you could point to and say "There is the single", where the other cd's had "Speakers Push the Air" and "All Medicated Geniuses". The cd doesn't really "rock" either. It just flows and you find yourself bobbing your head along without even realizing it.

The first track starts off with a whistle and a curious guitar riff. Later on, Andrea belts out one word that describes the whole cd: "Magnetic". After one listen, I wrote off the cd. Then I kept getting parts of the cd in my head, and here I am, giving it a 4/5.

"The Number" is probably my favorite song. It has a great breakdown near the middle of the song that just sounds amazing and breaks into a bass/drum showcase

The album is so different that when "Domino" comes up and Andrea asks "How do you like me, How do you like me now?" You can't help but think that maybe she's asking the listener the same thing.

"Selling the Wind" is a good song, but one can't help but think that it's very Decemberists-influenced.

This cd is best when listened straight through, but if I have to pick the best songs, they would be tracks 1-8 (except track 6...which is just an intermission type track). The end of the cd seems to fade a bit. If you listened to it and didn't like it, try once more. In fact, we should be happy that an indie-fav didn't just quit and make mainstream pop-sounding music.

4 out of 5 stars Best Comprehensive Survey of Canadian Music Available.......1999-01-19

This anthology of three Centuries(!) of Canadian music was assembled by a former producer from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation who now works for Naxos Canada. This producer is also active in the Canadian music world, so he knows whereof he speaks (or selects, as in this case). Liscensing the best performances available from major Canadian and International labels, this is the best collection of, and introudction to, the entire Canadian music scene that I have ever come across. The booklet is informative and is as enjoyable a read as is the 2 CD set is to listen. I doubt there will ever be anything quite like it again. If only NAXOS would now start recording Canadian music on top of the Canadian artists they already record, than they will truly have one of the finest and most comprehensive classical catalogues in the world. As for now, don't pass this one up.

The danzas by Ignacio Cervantes are the forerunners of today's popular Cuban music. They evoke the elegant collonades of Camaguey and the cobbled streets of Trinidad. Ruben Peleaz plays them with love and passion.

4 out of 5 stars A Neary Worthy Competitor to the Granddaddy of Movie Concertos Recordings.......2006-03-12

A minority of people who enjoy this kind of music (myself included) might fondly recall the first recorded collection of Great Movie Concertos compiled in an LP released in the early 60's called "Concerto Under the Stars" showing on the front of the jacket a painting of a pianst playing with an orchestra in the old Hollywood Bowl Shell. The pianist was Leonard Pennario and Carmen Dragon conducted the Hollywood Bowl Symphony Orchestra. It also included the Cornish Rhapsody, the Swedish Rhapsody, the Warsaw Concerto and a few solo piano pieces arranged for piano and orchestra by Mr. Dragon. What is not well known is that the best-selling LP's master tape was lost in a fire that gutted the Capitol Records Main Offices on Vine and Gower in Hollywood in the mid-sixties and Capitol Executives hastily contacted Pennario and Dragon and begged them to make another master. The original was well-rehearsed and therefore came off sounding splendid--pianist and orchestra synchronized perfectly. The second was not as good, probably owing to budget and lack of rehearsal time. Consequently there are several parts where soloist and orchestra are out of sync, especially the brass in the final moments of the Swedish Rhapsody (my personal favorite) where they are really called upon to shine in order to give the piece a rousing close. I am fortunate to have one of the last remaining copies of the original recording. Unfortunately, as a youth I did not take care of my LP collection and the disc is full of scratches and hisses. Rodriguez's playing is fine, however the orchestra he plays with is muddy-sounding in many parts. Notwithstanding, it is an acceptable substitute for those who remember Pennario's and a good recording for those who are being introduced to this kind of music. However, I really miss the crystal precision and sound clarity that Dragon brought to the original recording and really messed up big time in the reissue.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood Classics, classically played.......2001-08-20

In the 1940s, there was a serious effort to bring "classical music" to the Silver Screen. From the story of a violinist in "Humoresque" to Ingrid Bergman as a beguiling pianist in "Intermezzo," stories of classical performers were hot, and so was their music. It was an era when classical musicians like Rachmaninoff, Stokowski and Toscanini were hot media properties and music with a classical feel spiced up many film scores. Korngold, Rozsa and Steiner were bringing a symphonic dimension to the Hollywood score, and it is that richness of texture, expansiveness of melody and depth of feeling that you'll find in this disc by Santiago Rodriguez.

There are other good recordings of the Spellbound Concerto (Stephen Hough is particularly fine with the Hollywood Bowl orchestra under John Mauceri) and the Warsaw Concerto (I love Thibaudet's persuasiveness on London/Decca), but Rodriguez brings a laudable seriousness of purpose and phenomenal technical mastery to his interpretations here. Unlike the other performances cited, this disc is completely given over to original piano scores for film. The orchestra may not be quite as polished as Thibaudet's BBC Philharmonic or Hough's support from Hollywood, but it's very good and the recorded sound is excellent. Anyone who loves classic film scores or has an interest in movies of the 40s will surely treasure this disc. Fans of Rodriguez' performance of the Rachmaninoff 3rd will also enjoy just how much Rachmaninoff influenced all these other composers (and filmgoers as well).

    5 out of 5 stars A GREAT LISTEN.......2001-02-06
