Album Description
This legendary continuous 45 minute text piece is a masterfully editied collage made up of many people telling stories, their voices weaving left and right through the listener's space. Hostetler was an important young composer whose untimely passing was a great loss for American experimental music. Liner notes by Paul Lansky. A joint Frog Peak Music/Randy Hostetler Livingroom Fund project.

Based on Hans Christian Andersen's tale The Princess and the Pea, Once Upon a Mattress opened in May 1959 and was a solid success, if not a huge blockbuster. It did well enough, in any case, to warrant a 1997 revival starring Sarah Jessica Parker. The show was far from revolutionary, but it provided a really fun vehicle for a cast of top stage personalities, including black actress Jane White, who played Queen Aggravain (a part originally written for comedienne Nancy Walker) in whiteface. But of course, Once Upon a Mattress's heart and soul was Carol Burnett, who, in her Broadway debut created the part of Princess Winnifred and delivered two of Mary Rodgers's best songs, the hilarious "Shy" and the spunky "Happily Ever After," which sounds a bit like Jule Styne at his most rhythmic. Burnett's timing and performance remain as sharp as they were 40 years ago. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

5 out of 5 stars "Mattress" CD was excellent.......2007-01-09

I've really enjoyed this CD. I only wish the play was available on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars an oldie but a goodie.......2006-03-15

Loved Carol Burnett then and love her now. This original cast CD is a lovely trip down memory lane.

5 out of 5 stars Nothing like the original -- .......2006-01-30

No offense to any of the subsequent "Freds" but Carol Burnett OWNS this role. The recording is as fresh and funny as anything being done today and this is the version musical theatre fans should have in their library. Get it.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2006-01-22

My school did this musical last year (Spring 2005) and I had never heard of it before, so I bought both the Revial and the Original Cast Recordings. Fell in love. I was Sir Harry and loved both songs that I sang in. In my opinion, those are the two best songs in the entire musical, but then again, I'm biased.

Once Upon A Mattress OCR is by far the best out there. Don't get me wrong, the Revival Cast did a wonderful job (soundtrack at least) But There is something about Carol Burnett. She was meant to sing be Fred. But one thing that I didn't like is that "The Minstrel, the Jester & I" wasn't in this recording. But that is really the only problem I had with this.

My fav songs include:
In a Little While (because I sang it)
Yesterday I Loved You (again, I sang it)
Many Moons Ago
Shy

Would I recomend this CD? YES I WOULD!! I would shout it from the rooftops that people should by this CD! It's a funny, quaint little musical that people need to know about. I LOVE IT!

5 out of 5 stars I saw the original on Broadway.......2005-12-19

Once Upon a Mattress was one of the first Broadway shows that I ever saw and I was totally mesmorized and laughed so hard that my side hurt. Carol Burnett was the perfect person to play Fred and it was one of those magical performances that stays with you for a lifetime. The original cast album captures the fun and spirit of the show.

Later during the run of the show a friend of mine joined the chorus and when we talked about the experience, he told me that the joy that was on stage was similar to that felt by the cast and that was apparent on the album. They especially liked working with Ms. Burnett as she was a giving and caring actress.

I recommend this album to anyone who wants to spend some time just feeling good.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible LIVE, great CD.......2000-04-17

These guys played the local circuit (Lehigh Valley,PA) for quite some time before getting a break and opening for KISS. On recommendation from a friend, i saw these guys live, and they are incredible! It's a shame nothing new has come out in awhile. If anyone gets a tour schedule, pass it along.....

5 out of 5 stars Dayum Good.......1999-12-14

I bought this a couple years back for dirt cheap in the bargain bin at a local record store. I remember these guys getting a little play on late night Mtv when the album came out. I don't know if they're even still together, but this really is a damn good album and deserved to be a hit. It's sounds a little dated, being that it was released at the height of alt-grunge-whatever, but it's a truly incredible album.

You know the classical compilation business is getting serious when you have artists like conductor Andrew Litton and the Dallas Symphony on a record of music for little kids to play dress-ups by. On this disc, packaged explicitly for that purpose, participants include the Seattle Symphony, the English Chamber Orchestra, and the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. Nothing but the best for my kid! The selections were apparently chosen by a girl, pictured on the cover, who looks to be about five or six. She's done a great job. There's lots of Tchaikovsky here, as well as Grieg, Gliere, and Prokofiev. It's great music and the disc, with its cheerful cover, will likely bring a smile to the lips of many adults as well as children. --Gwendolyn Freed

Leaving the Cocteau Twins analogies in their creative dust, Rose Chronicles serve up mellifluous art pop ("Heaventide," "Voice in Jail") and richly textured, guitar-drenched beauties ("Ornament," "Vicious Thorns"). Kirsty Thirsk is now exploring the harsh edge of her remarkable voice, while Rich Miranda's music has gained in subtlety and complexity. Definitely no sophomore slump here. --Jeff Bateman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I Absolutely Love This Album. One Of The Best Albums I Own........2002-10-01

This album is absolutely astonishing. I found out about it from the Delerium album Karma with Kristy Thirsk singing in it. So, I decided to check out the band she's in. Man, at first I HATED the album. It sounded so awful and very discourse, like none of the songs made any sense to the ear at all. I was seriously considering selling it. But, after 4 or 5 listens to the album in its entirety, everything just clicked like magic. I started picking up the feel and essence of the music and singing on the album and it was incredible. I then couldn't believe what I was hearing. Thereafter, I got the feel and flow of the album. This is really incredible music from one of the best Canadian bands out there. I hope they come up with a new album soon. It's been awhile since this one came out. I am anticipating it very much. If you can find a copy of this album out there, be sure to pick it up. Believe me, you won't regret it. Very ethereal music. It's Awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Kristy Thirsk is awesome........2000-04-14

I'm another one of those people who found out about this group by accident; I fell in love with Kristy Thirsk's voice from Delerium's Karma and did a web search to see if I could find out anything about her, and I came up with this band. Then I bought Shiver (which is available from other places), the Dead and Gone to Heaven EP, and this.

One word to describe this album is "exhausting." From the pounding "Bruise" to the ethereal "Lovely Psycho", Thirsk delivers each song with consistent passion. She also wrote all the lyrics on the album, which are not happy lyrics, but, besides Bruise which is violent sounding, they are almost masked by beautiful music. Her occasionally harsh vocals are what give the songs edge as they soar over the often calm music, and it's a very effective delivery.

This is a very different album from Shiver, their first album. Shiver has a more pleasant sound to it, though the lyrics are similar. Kristy uses her voice differently in this, and as a whole it's a much less "pretty" sounding album, but it's still beautiful. If you're wondering what Kristy is up to now since Rose Chronicles split, she's singing for a band called Balligomingo.

5 out of 5 stars Hopelessly Beautiful.......2000-01-27

I discovered Rose Chronicles on a compilation album and fell madly in love with the track "Blood Red". Don't let the title scare you. It's a beautiful song with passionate vocals and lush music. When I saw the "Happily Ever After" album on Amazon I had to have it. The title itself spoke of it's lovely tunes within. Every track is filled with passion and soul. A very under appreciated band. Listen and love.

5 out of 5 stars The music is amazing.......1999-06-23

I stumbled onto this band quite by accident and I am so glad I did! The music manages to use dark lyrics in a way that doesn't leave the listener feeling like he/she needs a shower. I know this has been said, but Thursk's voice is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars An Unquenching Thursk.......1999-05-11

I thirst for Thursk's voice! It's an amazing instrument within this very amazing CD. She has quite a range, and you can almost visualize her putting an all out effort into giving the listener her very own vocal aura--it just cascades out of my sound system like a heavy waterfall of sweet, warm water. Very Impressive.

"Torn" is my favorite. The tune just has a melody that's very soothing, and relaxing--good after having a stressful day.

This CD is a must have for people who want an "etheral" edge to their collection (i.e. Single Gun Theory, or Medicine)and--it's a shame that Rose Chronicles has broken up, for if they hadn't, who can imagine what could have followed "Happily Ever After?" I bet another winner. Buy this CD!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Stuff Dreams are Made Of . . ........2005-03-23

Award-winning harpist and songwriter Gwen Knighton is probably best known on the filk music circuit, so I was delighted to find her CD for sale on Amazon.com. (For those who may not be familiar with it, filk is the music of the SF and Fantasy community.) BOX OF FAIRIES is Gwen's first independent CD-and it is a marvelous introduction to her talent. She has a wonderful voice, perfect for storytelling, and a light touch on the harp that makes the resulting sound seem effortless.

Ms. Knighton has spent many years studying her craft wherever it will take her. Her classical training is evident in her skill and style-but she's also got a flair and a whimsy all her own. BOX OF FAIRIES contains eleven tracks, and all of them are song-stories with Gwen performing the vocals and the harp accompaniment. The music style is much closer to folk than it is to new age-this is not for the listener who wants a very electronic ethereal sound like Enya or Maire Brennan. Gwen is much more down to earth in her performance style, and the adornment to her songs is mainly acoustic. Her mid-range voice is sweet and evocative, easy to understand and light, but not breathy. It's perfect for this kind of singing and it meshes well with her harp playing.

All the selections on this CD feature Gwen's voice and harp, but two of the tracks do feature additional performers. The first is the atmospheric "Ghosts" an atmospheric peice that includes Bill Sutton on bass. The other track is the final one of the CD, "Last Run" Bill Sutton accompanies Gwen on bass once again, and Mike Whitaker adds his talent on the electric guitar. In both cases the additions make sense, and they are woven in subtly--I didn't catch their inclusion on my first listen to this CD. All of these songs tell their own story, and all are delightful, but I do have my favorites. "Cinderella Sleeps"-a rather darker look at fairy tales in the modern world. It's the song that I first heard by Gwen that had me searching for this album. I also fell in love with "Stepchild" which is a bittersweet Selkie story that I cannot get out of my head half the time. The final number "Last Run" is based on a role-playing game called Shadowrun. It's quickly becoming my overall favorite. Gwen's CD has a sweet quality to it's tone, but don't let that fool you! Her unfolding songs are seldom sweet in subject matter. Particularly not "My Fairy Tale" which takes a rather cynical look at fairy tale cliches.

This is a fairly intimate sort of CD, the sort of thing where the singer speaks directly to the listener. Something you may want to play for a restful evening or for your own listening pleasure. It's probably not the best choice for background music-Ms. Knighton's lyrics tend to be a bit too intriguing and you'd want to turn up the volume. I finally had to give up doing my homework while listening to her music because I wasn't getting a darn thing done! This CD beautifully showcases Ms. Knighton's talent for performing and songwriting.

If you enjoy this CD, you might also want to check out the group Three Weird Sisters, comprised of Gwen Knighton, Brenda Sutton, Mary Crowell and Teresa Powell. Their first CD is RITE THE FIRST TIME. And while they aren't specifically filk, you might want to look for FIRE IN THE HEAD by Emerald Rose and STORMING HEAVEN by Avalon Rising.

    Happy Listening! ^_^ Shanshad

5 out of 5 stars Great songs, great harping, great voice!.......2003-03-01

This is definitely not just another "newage" harp album! The harping is terrific, the singing is great, but it's the lyrics that really make you stop and pay attention! Every time I listen to this I find something new, some new nugget of wisdom, some cautionary tale, a road less taken... Gwen's songs will make you laugh, cry, sometimes squirm, but most of all think.
    Highly recommended!

    5 out of 5 stars Wow..........2003-01-02

This is a simply wonderful album. It's hard to type "album", because when you listen to it, you keep looking over between your stereo speakers expecting to see Gwen playing and singing there just for you.

Her songs are very genuine, a refreshing change from so many works, popular or not. Equally special is her voice and her playing; it is simply superlative. Others have pointed out how she is an award-winning harpist; all I can add to that statement is that she deserves all that she receives in that regard.

A must-have if you enjoy vocals and harp music, and a most-definitely-should-have if you like anything other than the truly banal you can find on the radio and your local record store.

    5 out of 5 stars ...heart crafted.......2002-12-19

I keep buying this CD. Christmas is a good time to give it to friends. "Box of Fairies" is not the only harpist/singer CD I own and like listening to but it is special, somehow. The songs in it are intense and moving without being in any way overemotional. So much of Gwen's person seems to vibrate through the music, her character and soul. That somehow makes the songs so radiant. Gwen Knighton is an award winning harpist and a wonderful singer. That alone would make the album a good one. But somehow it's more than that. Her songs seem to mirror the inner strength of her person, both on a straight-forward and on a subtle, veiled level. Listening to her CD I have the feeling that I know her really well. I don't, of course. A lot of good music is produced by the music industry. But there is nothing "industrial" about this album. It's hand and heart crafted.

5 out of 5 stars The fairies worked hard on this one!.......2002-12-07

I rarely buy a CD unheard, however the moment I heard that Box of Fairies was to be released I wanted it. I'd enjoyed the Three Weird Sister's last album, and I just knew that a solo effort was going to be worth having.

Finances got in the way, and for a time I had to content myself with MP3's from sites like mp3.com. All this did was tease me. The more I listened, the more I knew this was an album worth having.

And now I have my very own copy. And yes, I was right, it was worth the wait.

This is a very rich, deep CD with all but one of the songs written by Gwen herself. A first listen doesn't truly do it justice. Certainly it's enjoyable on the first listen, even enchanting, but it's on subsequent listenings that you begin to slip down through the layers of the words and the music and discover the rich world within.

I know next to nothing about how a harp should be played; I'm no expert. But what I do know is that if it shouldn't be played the way Gwen plays it, then a crime has been committed. I never realised that a harp could be the finest, most delicate of instruments one moment, with each note flying into the empty audio spectrum to sparkle by itself, then absolutely filling that spectrum with a cascade of notes the next.

The harp playing is only half the story, however. I really do recommend you listen several times to the words of most of her songs. You'll quickly find a breadth of emotions, of human experience buried within. Even songs such as Stepchild which step into myth and legend, emote feelings that many will recognise.

Emote. That's the word I'm after. Most of Gwen's songs emote, producing an atmosphere of feelings, of emotions, of experiences that many will find familiar, will be able to identify with. Sometimes the feelings are good, sometimes bad, but they're real, and they dance through this CD a little like the fairies that are on the cover.

But how can I mention the words without mentioning the voice that delivers them to us? Gwen's voice is beautifully expressive, clear and powerful. It's a perfect compliment to her harp.

Yes, I recommend this. Heartily and without reservation. It's being played almost continuously on my stereo even now. If, as Gwen says in her intro, that the Fairies are the ones playing her harp, then she made them work very hard on this CD.
