Customer Reviews:
Probably the best compilation of a single composer's works. Ever!.......2007-05-06
Claude Debussy is perhaps the most understated composer in the history of man. His ability to compose both on the piano and for orchestra is unmatched, in my humble opinion. The fact that Debussy was able to also arrange many contemporary and previous composers' works just adds to his resume. He had a gift, pure and simple.
Although this album doesn't (well, honestly it couldn't) contain all of Debussy's catalog, it does certainly contain some of his best work. There is actually only one track on this CD that I don't care for; that would be Golligwogg's Cake-Walk; it is just a bit annoying to me.
Beyond my dislike for that one track, the entire CD is a beautifully aranged, beautifully played, well recorded compilation with good sound mixing and it is a respectful tribute to a truly great composer.
"Claire de Lune" (Moonlighting) is perhaps one of the most gorgeous pieces of music ever composed; this is the orchestrated version, which I prefer, but the piano version is nice. "Arabesque No. 1" is superb. "Fetes" is both haunting and airy. "Reverie" is the best piano piece I have ever heard. "The Girl with the Flaxen Hair" is also a wonderful piano piece. "The Sunken Cathedral" is dark and mysterious, a true wonder.
The rest of the album is fantastic. Listed above are just my personal favorites from the disc. I listen to this CD at least once a week, but often more. It is perfect for relaxation, for listening while reading, or for my personal favorite use, to block out noise while I am writing.
I would recommend this to any classical lover.
If you have not heard Debussy's music, you must get this CD; it will have you ordering more of his compositions almost immediately.
The man was a genius.
This is a brilliant assembly of Debussy. .......2006-07-08
After listening to his "Greatest Hits," I know why he is considered one of the best.
THIS IS THE STUFF RIGHT HERE!.......2005-09-12
I BOUGHT THIS BECAUSE I WAS TRYING EXPAND MY HORIZONS, YOU KNOW? CULTURALLY AND MENTALLY, YOU KNOW? SERIOUSLY THOUGH I WAS IN THE SHOP AND I WAS HAVING A GAZE AROUND THE PLACE AND THEN THIS PICTURE JUST JUMPS OUT AT ME, AND I PICKED IT UP AND IT WAS THIS DEBUSSY CHAP AND ID HEARD ABOUT HIM ON THE BBC LEARNING ZONE SO I THOUGHT ;why not?; SERIOUSLY THOUGH I DRAGGED IT HOME AND I POPPED IT IN THE OLD CD PLAYER AND IT FLOORED ME.......I MEAN SERIOUSLY THIS THING...AMAAZING STUFF..I MEAN TODAYS MUSIC HAS NOTHING, NOTHING NOTHING ON THIS STUFF RIGHT HERE.
SOME GOOD TRACKS ARE:
TRACK 1 IS THE BEST. THE OPENING FLUTE ON THE TRACK IS TOTALLY CHILLED AND COOL, REMINDS ME A BIT OF TRACK 13 ON ILL COMMUNICATION BY THE BEASTIE BOYS...A COINCIDENCE???
THE ONLY WEAK TRACK ON THE ALBUM IS TRACK 6, THE UNFORTUNATELY TITLED "CHILDRENS CORNER SUITE: GOLLIWOGGS CAKE WALK" THE MUSIC IS JUST DATED MAN, JUST AS DATED AS THE TITLE.
OVERALL THOUGH THIS IS A QUALITY ALBUM, WITH CHILLS, SPILLS AND THRILLS. SERIOUSLY THOUGH A FINE EFFORT.
Debussy is the best. Ever........2004-07-23
I love Debussy and all of his brilliant work. I barely listen to any other classical music, so I am not an authority, just an honest lover of music. I play piano and love piano music, so I was not disappointed at a piano Flaxen-Haired Girl. I've never heard an orchestrated version and don't need to. This is a good introductory CD to Debussy's work, I love it! The only thing I don't care for is the Arabesque #1 (Track 9). The horn is kind of grating and clunky to hear in such an otherwise beautiful piece. Still, its interesting and different. Everything Debussy made is purest gold.
i am dumb.......2004-07-01
And I'm a doomass because I didn't proof-read my other review and I wrote that Clair de Lune was performed by piano on this disc, which it isn't. Anyway, the piano version is better.

Life Is But A Dream..........2006-08-30
This CD is just pure magic. I know that is such a cliche' thing to say, but it really is. Of course, it really won't appeal to those people who are into EXTREME LIVING...whatever the hell that means, because to me, extreme living is living close to the soul, close to the spirit, close to the Invisible Source that makes and creates all things in and out of Itself.
Debussy was a composer who lived very close to this Invisible Stream. His music reflects a gentleness and yet a strength that flows throughout each composistion. The arrangements are dreamy and mystical and allows one to go into their "inner chamber" and pray in secret to the One who knows their heart as well as their soul.
As much as I love this CD, I tend not to listen to it in the car. I once listened to it while making a routine drive to Santa Monica. The CD stopped and I had somehow missed all of my exits and ended up in Ventura...talk about being in dreamland!
It's a great CD to put in your walkman and go to an outdoor cafe' where you can sip a cafe latte and write poems to an unknown lover whose face you cannot remember, but whose gentle breath is the scent of lavendar...oh, I wax poetic...so sorry...
If you are into quiet and stillness, get this CD...it's truly a breath of fresh air in this noisy, crowded, extreme world we have to be in but not necessarily of...
Peace & Blessings
Beautiful, dreamy.......2006-07-17
This music evokes both emotions and images of life waking up in spring, even being in a magical forest where anything can happen, or floating on clouds. You can just enjoy the music and let your imagination soar or the music can take you into that trance-like state where you can access creative ideas and creative solutions to any problems - and maybe they just dissolve of their own accord.
Fabulous collection !.......2005-09-13
If you like Debussy - whom I have heard called one of the progenitors of ambient music - you will love having his most inspiring and beautiful works together on one cd. These works are tranquil and serene, and yet they don't fade into the background - no matter what you are doing - because they are true art. When this cd is playing you can't help but listen and sigh. My cats love this cd, too.
An excellent introduction to Debussy and French music.......2005-06-30
Compilation CD's like this are an excellent first CD to purchase when first exploring a new composer or style of music ("Expressionism" in Debussy's case). And this Philip's "Set your Life to Music" collection is usually a sure and safe way to do that given their well thought-out selections, themes and quality recordings. This CD here contains many of the most popular, lyrical and enchanting works of the 19th-century French composer, Claude Debussy. The range of selections are diverse and satisfying: from his major solo piano works through his top chamber music (for 2-5 instruments) to the full-blown orchestral selections of great imagery and dreaminess that can transport one into another world of great serenity. (But, there are enough sudden changes in loudness and rhythm to upset any notions of perfect bliss and keep the daydreamer from falling asleep - hence the title, "for Daydreams" and not "for Bedtime" like in other offerings in this Philips' series) Regardless, this CD is an excellent introduction to Claude Debussy as well as being overall relaxing music to enrich one's life.
One interesting music history tidbit on Debussy that might interest the new listener: Even though Debussy did not like the label, his music was labeled "Expressionism" for the similarities to what the French artists like Monet were doing at the same time. In Debussy's case, his intent was to create "emotional impressions" with music that evoked specific moods and images in the mind - not unlike what the "impressionistic painters" were trying to do on canvas using pure color and form to evoke the fleeting, emotional moment of a landscape scene. "Prelude of the Afternoon of the Fawn" is a good example of this dreamy, lingering, emotive style of music.
Dream and Classical music are magic.......2005-02-16
This CD is one of the best among its classical collections. (bach for breakfast is my one of them) It puts me to any place I dream of whenever I listen to this cd. It usually brings me into outer space, or sometimes go to the sky or under the sea. You can also just sit back and relax while listening to the music. In addition, once I get mad or not calm enough, I just put this cd on and it cures my anger.
Classical music is magic.

Customer Reviews:
Alicia is Excellent, but Marylene Dosse is the world's master of Granados!.......2006-05-02
Alicia is a wonderful pianist, and I enjoy her renditions of Granados. Her performance of the Goyescas on this CD is world-class. However, I wanted to make you aware of a little-known Franco-American pianist, Marylene Dosse, who has won awards for her complete recordings of Granados's music. It's a little hard to find, a four-CD set. Her playing of the Goyescas is truly magical--well beyond even what Alicia is capable of. Dosse is the grandmaster of Granados and all Spanish classical piano music! What separates her is her absolute clarity and control of tone, and her ability to maintain a driving rhythm regardless of the complexity. Other pianists playing the same passages (including Alicia in certain passages of the Goyescas), will slow down, losing some of the song's vitality. Another distinction: some pianists impress by their virtuosity: Marylene Dosse by her expression. You will be deeply touched, listening to her Goyescas!
Her most celebrated and reminded album!.......2005-08-21
Published in 1906-1909 this is the undeniable composer's masterpiece Iberia exhibits in various degrees all the characteristics of Albeniz's art. The music itself has multiple hues, due its implicit expressive richness, density and kaleidoscopic tunes. Its twelve pieces -distributed in four volumes- are all based on Spanish scenes and landscapes.
Evocación is one the most beloved pieces of the first volume and nobody has been able to reach the Spanish ardor as William Kapell did it. Corpus en Sevilla accuses Liszt's Hungarian rhapsodies influence.
In the second volume are worth to mention both works: Ondeña and Almería are written in free variation form. The third volume is the most perplexing of the set.
Finally the last volume keeps for you the most mature of the set : Jerez, Eritaña and Málaga conform among others a true compilation of the cream of the cream Spanish music ever written.
In Granados ' Goyescas we perceieve La Rocha in very good shape, with a convincing digitation, involvement and sublime rapture requested By Granados.
The CD I couldn't live without.......2005-06-10
The title for my review may sound hyperbolic, but of my entire collection, this is the one. I purchased this CD knowing Alicia de Larrocha's playing from two concerts I had seen, one at the tender age of six and another in my teenage years, at which point I was fascinated with the music of Joaquin Turina. A bit of research on the Albeniz work she performed at that later concert, "La Vega," led me to the name of Iberia. The pairing of Iberia and Goyescas certainly represents one of the most ambitious 2-cd collections of piano music I know, and Ms. de Larrocha not only manages the enormous technical challenges of Albeniz's greatest work, parts of which he himself nearly destroyed as unplayable (Lavapiés, CD1, track 9, according to a biography.) Her interpretation sparkles from the first muted bars of "Evocación" to the last triumphant chords of "Eritaña", as she shows us the rich colors of this music without ever seeming to get bogged down in a mire of notes. I am not sure which deserves greater admiration - Albeniz's compositional genius or de Larrocha's interpretative flair, so I will say that they are inextricable parts of a glorious whole. Admittedly, on first listen, I thought "What's the big deal with Iberia?" Four or five years later, it is still an album I pull out to listen to - in its entirety. Save 85 minutes sometime to listen to all of Alicia's Iberia, but be warned that this can be a pleasantly addictive habit. For the curious, Albeniz's suite was organized into four books of three pieces each - the first two books were written for Blanche Selva and the last two for the more technically gifted Catalan pianist Joaquin Malats. The recording engineers should have left more time to marvel at the achievement of "Eritaña," Debussy's favorite in the collection - Albeniz felt compelled to draw lines between the staves in the score merely to allow the pianist to follow his melodic line through this piece, but as a listener, just sit back and marvel at what one of the greatest living pianists brings to this work.
Regarding "Goyescas," I can't say I know as much, but its lush, rich texture and its careful building upon themes sprinkled throughout the work (unlike separate movements of Iberia) make for a beautiful complement to Iberia. Granados, born seven years after Albeniz and one of his closest friends, wrote one of the most important piano pieces of the twentieth century in "Quejas, o la maja y el ruiseñor" (Laments, or Beauty and the Nightingale), the high point of the Goyescas collection for me. The third piece in Goyescas is a delight as well, and the power and beauty that de Larrocha brings to this entire work is tremendous.
To summarize: Run, don't walk, to buy this CD, one of the greatest in the annals of recorded classical piano.
The Queen of Spanish Music.......2005-02-04
The music of Albeniz and Granados is so good that one wonders why many pianists seem to regard it as mere salon music. I suppose that it has too much color, rhythmn and sheer gorgeousness to be considered truly serious. These composers had the good fortune to be the inheritors of a popular musical tradition that goes back a thousand years and encompasses Byzantines, Moors and Gypsies, among others. Alicia De Laroccha's only rival in this repertoire was Esteban Sanchez. Her playing is nearly perfect. Long may she flourish.
Best CD I own.......2001-07-10
It's kind of weird, my being an 18 year old, to say a classical piano cd is my favorite. But, I'm a classical pianist, and a huge fan of Albeniz (and spanish music in general) and this is the best performance of these two incredible works you will find. Alicia de Larrocha makes this seem easy, never repetitive, and her technique is amazing without losing any of the expressiveness needed to play this music. Wow.

Customer Reviews:
Don't buy it.......2007-02-11
Ok. The guitar players are good. But there is so much extra noise such as heavy breathing, the guitarist moving around etc. in many of the pieces. I am only somewhat being humerous when I say I am suprised you don't hear the guitarist belching or passing gas! It is a very, very irritating recording of good guitarists.
Certainly NOT Relaxing.......2006-08-04
This CD would get an average rating if it was merely titled "The World's greatest guitar music". However, this CD is supposed to be "relaxing". Well, it most certainly is NOT. Some of the pieces literally sound like soundtracks to a movie thriller.
Very misleading title to an otherwise pretty good collection of Spanish guitar ballads. If you are looking for something to relax or sleep to, look elsewhere.
On the mark.......2006-02-25
From the time I first attended a John Williams concert 40 years ago, I have been a collector of Spanish / Classical guitar music. I often play, on a Ramirez, some of the tunes on these two disks. The selections are wonderful examples of the world's greatest guitar music. I actually take naps while listening to these cd's. The guitarists are excellent; I only wish Denon had listed their artists.
NIce Collection!.......2005-11-12
I listen to a lot of classical guitar (and other stringed instrument) music, and I like this collection. It draws on an unusually wide range of guitar compositions, which is a plus, and it's well produced, with good sound and balance - I think it's a better than average collection.

Magical and Majestic..........2004-12-30
Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops take a break from their usual contemporary program; to perform this eclectic selection of transcriptions by the flamboyant Leopold Stokowski. The novice wouldn't have known that Stokowski got his start in 1909 with the Cincinnati Symphony. I guess they are paying homage to him with this album. Where other discs usually concentrate on just Bach or baroque items; this disc offers orchestrations from Boccherini to Rachmaninoff. The digital recording is fine and detailed complementing the instrumentation. Though purists find Stokowski's meddling offensive, his transcriptions can make classical music more approachable to new ears. Kunzel kind of gives us his version of Stokowki's greatest hits, showing serious affection for the music. You get "Toccata and Fugue"
to start it off, and a very different "Great Gate of Kiev", less congested in orchestration than the Ravel, to end it. Most of the pieces have bombastic finales, which include heavy brass and percussion and even carillons ring out. A very likable program that won't fade with repeated listening. Add a star if your not aware that Stokowki's own recordings of these pieces are still available.
A MUST HAVE!!! Buy two you might ware this CD out........1999-06-12
Arranged by the greatest, conducted by one of the greatest, and performed by the best you could not ask for anything more. These performances will inspire forever. Five stars do not do this music compilation justice!

The very best.......2007-01-11
I have a large collection of classical guitar recordings. Quite simply, "Together Again" is the finest, best recordings of its genre ever made. It features arrangements that had never been before heard and that a big plus, for the normal repertoire for guitar is fairly small and we soon tire of hearng the same pieces again and again. The virtuosity of both Williams and Bream is unqustionalble. Bream sounds a bit steely at times. whereas Williams is soft. Together, they produce a magnificent sound.
Sublime.......2006-03-14
The two foremost virtuosos of our time have come together once again to produce this sublime album.
What John Williams lacks in lyricism is easily compensated for by Bream and the result is outstanding.
Their chemistry is so amazing and the pieces come to life in such a cohesive way that I sometimes think it is one person with 10 fingers on each hand playing the pieces.
Not every piece is easily accessible, so give it time.
Highly recommended.
An excellent CD for anyone who loves the classical guitar.......2000-06-12
This CD is a must have for all lovers of the classical guitar. As is the case of the first album, aptly named "Together", the modern masters of the classical guitar, Bream & Williams, join forces again in order to achieve some spectacular results.
The main problem of playing a classical guitar is the genuine lack of material, apart from those (relatively few) pieces which were originally written for the guitar. Furthermore, being a fairly limited instrument, the guitar limits severely the possibilities of adapting various classical pieces which were not written originally for the guitar. Thus, Bream & Williams, set out on a mission - to achieve what is not possible on one guitar, by playing a duet of classical guitars. Hence, almost all the compositions here are adaptations, but this is by no means a bad thing - the arrangements very cleverly hides the limits of the instruments, while emphasizing it's intimate and warm nature.
Two of the most notable of these adaptations are "Evocacion", from Albeniz "Suite Iberia" and "Bajo la palmera" from "Cantos de Espana", both of which were written for piano. It is well worth mentioning that many of Albeniz compositions were based on traditional spanish tunes, played originally on guitars. Thus, by playing these truly great pieces on classical guitars, Bream & Williams are restoring some of the magic which allured Albeniz to these tunes in the first place. One might also feel these tunes sound actually more natural played on two guitars rather than on a piano.
Other interesting adaptations are the three pieces by Debussy, which are very melodic and are very suitable to be played on guitars.
I warmly recommend this excellent album for anyone who appreciates classical music played by very able musicians. I guess it's also ideal as a gift for those who like good music which isn't classical, and are interested in exploring new grounds, as this album is very communicative, although it hasn't lost any of it's integrity.

Customer Reviews:
A great conductor and his vision of Debussy.......2006-06-27
'Fantasia' made Stokowski a pop star, but it nearly ruined his serious reputation in the bargain. Born in 1882, he was already middle-aged when he gave up the Philadelphia Orchestra in 1938, and yet he had almost four decades to go, some of it glorious, a lot of it not. The low point of his reputation was probably in the Fifties when these incredible recordings were made. His vision of Debussy was dreamlike, while at the same time making every emotional gesture ripe and vivid.
The New York pickup group that recorded Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun features Julius Baker, first flute of the NY Phil., and no doubt the other wind soloists, all placed prominently close to the mike, were first desk men, too. Their ensemble is beautiful and nuanced as only the best musicians can deliver. Stokowski's pace is slow, and you welcome every lingering phrase.
The Trois Nocturnes and Iberia come from the sessions with the London Sym., and here Stokowski pulls his trick of reshaping the orchestra's sound to make it his own. The degree of control and hushed moodiness in Nuages is hypnotic--has this music ever sounded so enchanted? The raucous procession in Fetes explodes with color but remains mysterious, as befits night music. What stands out here, as everywhere on this CD, is Stokowski's ability to shape rhythms so that they feel utterly fresh and natural, no easy thing in Debussy's world of artifice. The sirens in the last movement not only sing seductively, but Stokowski remains aware that they are hidden by the cloak of night. The sound is vivid and detailed, though not as close up as the New York L'Apres midi.
After that intoxicating Nocturnes--a rare compliment for a work that can seem chilly and aloof in ocncert--the world of Iberia is even more colorful. I don't know why Stokowski only conducted the middle section of Images pour orchestre. I do know I've never heard Debussy's Spain evoked with so much blood in its veins. This isn't Spain seen (and felt) through shimmering gauze, but a land of exciting passion. This is an ideal CD for anyone who finds Debussy too vaporous and impressionistic. The LSO winds are tangy and squawky, which makes the color palette even more earthy.
In sum, a great recording in which every item goes to the top of the list.
Food for the Imagination.......2005-04-30
Claude Debussy is one of my favorite composers and, as such, this is one of my favorite CD's. I could not imagine not having it as apart of my collection. Now, even though the pieces were recorded in 1957-1958, the CD has been digitally remastered and I can honestly say that it seems as though it was recorded yesterday ~ it is that crystal-clear perfect. For myself, this CD is like a book of poetry detailing abstract but familiar concepts or settings and, on those grounds, it is worth getting. I think that Debussy is an exceptional technician in the art of turning the abstract into something that is tangible and has definite form. He knows how to communicate love of another or of nature, of the human created environment, or just awe inspired grace that, for myself, makes him a true master of his craft.
very distinctive Debussy!.......2002-08-11
The word that most readily comes to mind for me to describe these performances (in full bodied early stereo sound) is passionate. No detachment or distancing a la Boulez but instead, a very overt engagement with both the sensual aspects of the music, as in his performance of the Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faune, the Three Nocturnes and the slow movement of Iberia, and the fiery ones, as in the first and third movements of Iberia. Only Munch's Debussy has the same degree of overt emotionality, though with a more Berlioz like nervous intensity instead of the molten sensual flow of Stokowski. A definite recommendation for both Stokowski and Debussy lovers.
Sublime Stokie!.......2000-11-26
When it comes to creating orchestral magic, there really was no else like Leopold Stokowski. With an orchestral master like Debussy, this is a match made in heaven. These old Capitol recordings from the late 1950s are a pure delight. Julius Baker's flute on "Prelude" is in a class by itself, and although I prefer Boulez's recent DG recording of "Nocturnes", Stokowski's performance is wonderful just the same with otherworldly BBC Women's Chorus singing in the third movement. The recording, naturally for Stokowski, is in excellent 1950s stereo and not a hiss is to be found. Stokowski's transcription of "Clair de Lune" is not too gooey, and "Iberia" has plenty of Spanish sizzle. Debussy fans might have their more favorite conductors, but Stokowski shows once again there were few pieces of music (Mahler, for example) he couldn't make his own. Anyone interested in Debussy and/or Stokowski should not hesitate.

- Interview With William Kapell
Amazon.com essential recording
Blessed with transcendent technique and an affinity for big, bold Romantic works, William Kapell has been hailed as America's greatest homegrown pianist. This comprehensive collection of his complete recorded output, previously unreleased recordings, and broadcast tapes adds luster to a reputation that's become legendary since his tragic death in a plane crash at age 31. The earliest recordings, from the mid-1940s, bristle with raw energy and virtuosic flourishes tempered by an innate musicality that rises above mere display.
The disc coupling Khachaturian and Prokofiev concertos is charged with excitement; the Rachmaninoff pairing of the Paganini Variations and the Concerto No. 2 weds the Grand Romantic style to poetic lyricism; and an inspired Liszt group is charged with dynamic energy. Best may be the two Chopin discs: spontaneous, rhythmically flexible sonatas and mazurkas. The later recordings demonstrate the repose that comes with artistic maturity, and the "live" broadcasts reveal Kapell's warmth and spontaneity in concert. Splendid transfers help make this long-awaited set appealing to music lovers in general, as well as piano buffs. --Dan Davis

Very touched.......2006-09-24
I wrote my doctoral dissertation on William Kapell (we share the same school, and my teacher was a student of his), and to still see the outpouring of admiration and love for Kapell's art is still very moving for me.
In Memorium.......2005-10-29
I heard William Kapell play the Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini with the fledgling Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the late 1940's or very early 1950's. My only memory of the occasion is that I was enthralled. Kapell has held me in thrall ever since.
A few years later, in the middle 50's, I bought Kapell's recording of the same work, with Fritz Reiner and the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra (alias of The Philadelphia Orchestra). I still have that LP, though I wore it out long ago. It was the beginning of my musical education. But since 1998, we have had this wonderful box of reissues from the vaults of RCA. The sound is mostly excellent, considering the age of the monophonic originals. To this day, Kapell's Rachmaninov Rhapsody remains-in my opinion-the most impassioned, yet the most musical, reading of the piece ever recorded. No one had, or has, Kapell's combination of white-hot temperament, technical brilliance, and musical insight. We have had musical geniuses; technical wizards abound. It is the combination of these gifts, as Kapell possessed them in particular, married to his incendiary passion, that made him unique.
He was still learning, and he was learning at such an astounding rate! He had moved from Khachaturian to the most unforgettable Chopin B minor Sonata ever recorded in little more than a decade. His deep throated, noble, and articulate Bach has caused some to speculate that Glenn Gould might have found his inspiration in Kapell. One Gould biographer, and a New York critic, wrote that the reverse was true. The critic acknowledged the error, in print, noting that Kapell could not have been influenced by Gould's style since he had been dead for two years by the time of Gould's debut recital in New York City in 1955.
The lyrical side of romantic music is not what Kapell was or is known for, not his "style" as people remember him now. But listening to the lyrical music in this set shows a side of him that was, nevertheless, as real as any, and perhaps more revealing. It also gives us a notion of what we might have expected of William Kapell had he lived a normal span of years and played a normal variety of music. In a live performance, he plays Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 1, with melting legato and exquisite timing: his innate sense about when to tug on the beat and when to surge forward makes the music breathe. His use of dynamic variety demands the greatest respect: at one point, the repetition of a melodic phrase is but a pale echo of its first statement. His tonal palette is no less wondrous. When a deep bass note suddenly appears, early in the A section of the ABA structure, it sounds-not loud nor quiet, not muffled nor distinct-but awesomely subterranean. Kapell begins the piece without much sustaining pedal, but in the B section, he subtly adds more and more. Then, when the A section returns near the end, the pedal disappears. This dramatic change in color-along with Chopin's change of key-seems like the parting of clouds. We are in the hands of two masters here, Chopin and Kapell. Kapell gave this performance in Carnegie Hall in February of 1945, when he was twenty-two years old.
In the Bach and Chopin works I've discussed, the steely, percussive tone that some speak of is nowhere to be heard. Rather, we hear a full, rich, and complex piano tone. In the Chopin Sonatas, the Debussy pieces, and the Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Albeniz, the sound Kapell produces is beautiful and varied.
He was a chamber musician of the first order, as his collaborations with Heifetz prove. (He was one of the very few musicians who had the force of personality to make Heifetz accompany HIM. And you can hear it.) And if you've never heard Rachmaninov's great Cello Sonata, played here with the grand Russian/German cellist Edmund Kurtz, you're in for a treat. There are several fine, modern stereo recordings, but this one is special. The piano part is very important-Rachmaninov did write it, after all-and Kapell is magnificent. This was Rachmaninov's next published work after the 2nd Piano Concerto, to give you an idea of its melodic grandeur. If there is a flaw here, it is that the piano is recorded too far back, relative to the cello.
Kapell died on October 30, 1953. He had just turned thirty-three. He played his last recital in Geelong, Australia, on the 22nd. It included the Chopin 2nd Piano Sonata which contains the well-known "Marche funèbre." That performance is included here, transferred from the original acetates. It is a great performance but very hard to listen to now, in light of what was to follow just over a week later. I am writing this one day short of the 52nd anniversary of Kapell's death. Had he lived until today, he would be younger than either Earl Wild or Ivan Moravec, both of whom are still making magnificent music. For those of us who love William Kapell's music, it is heartbreaking to consider, and fruitless. Thank Heaven we have recordings like the ones in this set. They are essential for any lover of good music.

Priceless Souvenirs from a Rare Genius: Ave Atque Vale.......2005-10-28
During the last century we have had many tragic losses in the arts, often affecting men and women who are at the peak of their careers, shimmering with excellence, only to be silenced by death and all too often, by accidental death. The names of Anton Webern, Fritz Wunderlich, WG Sebald, Sylvia Plath, Dinu Lipatti, and so many others arise, but none as tragic as the death of William Kapell in 1953.
William Kapell is still considered by most as the America's greatest pianist, even fifty odd years after his death at the age of 31 in a plane crash. Those who heard him perform still rhapsodize over the magic he created. Those of us who are left with only recordings, such as this spectacular boxed set of all of his recordings, can only be uplifted by the man's genius, his extraordinary technical facility, and his intuitive, profound approach to the great works of music.
All styles of music were easily accessible to Kapell. Listen to the Mozart, Bach, Scarlatti, Paganini and Mendelssohn and try to imagine performances of more clarity and finesse than these. His Chopin is well represented in this set and glows with the uncanny power and tenderness that Chopin combined in his works. His works for solo piano by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich are the gold standard, and yet his Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mussorgsky and Liszt raise the bar for excellence that has since not been excelled. Joyously this set includes concerti including Prokofiev, Beethoven, Khachaturian, and Rachmaninov with the various conductors who saw Kapell's gifts and championed them.
The memory of this great artist is felt throughout the year, but never as acutely as on October 29th which marks the date of his cruel death. The world was brightened for too short a time by William Kapell, yet because of his recorded legacy his legend lives on. This is an impossibly fine box set of treasures. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05
Poetry without words.......2004-12-14
In listening ot this collection, I think of the other 20th century pianistic genius who died tragically young: Dinu Lipatti (d. 1950). Both men excelled at Chopin but each had a thoroughly individual sound. In addition to Chopin, the Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev are especially fine. Highly recommended.
What Is Technically Difficult Is Not Always Pleasant To Hear.......2004-10-02
Piano enthusiasts might find this set incredible, but I prefer my music to be pleasant. Consider your tastes before buying.

The Absolute Sound has been a premiere audiophile rag for decades. If you are one, you already know them. If not, then there is only a small chance their magazine will be useful to you. They have another publication for home theatre, "Perfect Vision" which has far broader appeal these days. SACD is the format for this disk. Many of them are pressed in "hybrid" for use on conventional CD players. SACD is a significant improvement on the CD, which initially promised "perfect sound forever".
Telarc is a particularly high quality label that supports SACD. They have a fine list of recordings that extends far beyond these chestnuts.
To appreciate this improvement you need to have a SACD player. So the best use of this disk is to bring it with you to different audio stores to audition their equipment. Over time it functions as a reference disk, or benchmark, as you compare different sound systems.
Because it has only bleeding hunks of well known classical music, it has little other value unless you are interested in classical music but have little experience of it. In that case it may serve as a sampler to lead you to buy complete recordings of these selections. But again you need the SACD player, which you may already have if you are a jazz or rock audiophile. Otherwise, pass it by.

Impressive..........2002-02-02
This is a wonderful performance. I probably have 15 recordings of Iberia. I'm not sure that I could say this is the "best" performance, but it may be. It is very sympathetic to the composer's intentions and has a wonderful lilt to it that has beguiled me. The pianist for this recording has done a lot of research into the work creating a new performing edition along the way, yet this is far from a "studied" performance. If you appreciate this work, you really "must" have this performance. The recording quality is very good, the piano tone excellent and the performance enlightening. If you don't know the work, you'll LOVE this work and performance. There's a lot of beauty and substance to Iberia, one of the great piano works of its era.
Decision 2000 is Resolved: The Piano Won the Guitar Wars.......2000-12-09
This is great piano music. Period. And it is unabashedly likeable, even by, er, laymen's standards. It is said that "Carmen" is the perfect opera to introduce to someone who is convinced he hates opera. If you know someone who thinks he hates classical pianism, this could be his "Carmen."
I would love this music just for the pianism, which is exactly where it should be, bordering on Liszt, Debussy and Spain; would love it just for the rightness of the music's Spanish character; would love it just for González' brilliant playing. I would love this music just for any one of these three, but they are all here, perfectly, brilliantly, joyously blended. The piano dances, it sings, it cries, compels, entrances. The piano convinces you it is as light and nimble as a guitar, but doesn't weary the ear after two hours and twenty minutes, where the ear might suffer after such an uninterrupted stretch of the six-stringed instrument.
This performance would have been well worth the ticket of a fully-priced two-disc set. But it prices much, much lower. In many respects, a miraculous outpouring of music.
There are a lot of guitar discs with the "Asturias (Leyenda)" in transcription. I have no quarrel with the guitar transcription; it is one (albeit minor) proof of how right the music is for Spain, for the quintessential flamenco instrument. And we were mesmerized watching (and listening to) Eliot Fisk play the "Asturias" at Borders one fine afternoon. But if you like the guitar transcription of the "Asturias" (and to hear it is to love it) try a compare/contrast with this performance, as the piece was originally composed.
You won't have to choose between them. There can be ample room in your heart for both.
