Theodora was said to be Handel's own favorite among his oratorios, and it is a masterpiece. Unlike most of the others, it ends in tragedy, the heroine and her lover going to their deaths as martyrs. It is also Handel's only oratorio on a Christian subject. Nikolaus Harnoncourt's performance is a good one, lightly cut, but it doesn't really compare to Nicholas McGegan's Harmonia Mundi version, which is a tremendous achievement. Worth a listen as a second option. --David Hurwitz

    4 out of 5 stars EXCELENTE INTERPRETACIÃ"N........2002-10-18

4 out of 5 stars Lovely music. A nice interpretation........2000-07-02

Theodora is one of Handel's loveliest oratorios. The music is beautiful and full of tenderness and Harnoncourt, the soloists, choir and orchestra seem to understand this aspect very well.

I wouldn't consider R. Alexander to be an ideal baroque music singer but here she does a wonderful job: she understands her role and is really expressive. H.P. Blochwitz is also marvelous here. The rest of the soloists and the choir are worth listening to, if not great. The orchestra and N. Harnoncourt do a really fine job.

The only negative thing about this recording is, that it doesn't include all arias written by Handel, but I think it is still a really pleasant recording.

5 out of 5 stars A very pleasant music of the mature Haendel........1999-10-26

In this Oratorio I feel a kind of sadnes. I don't find the author of the italian operas, that conquered London. But I find a deeper sorrow, a certain melacholy. But is always the great Haendel that we well know. Harnoncourt feel perfectlyu the atmosphere of this work. The singers are good or very good. Expecially wonderful are the choir and the orchestra.

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderful oratorio........1999-10-23

The late Haendel, also if a little tired, is always HAENDEL. We have splendid pages of great music. Unusual and dramatic the plot. Good, but not excellent ,the singers. A little cold Harnoncourt.

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant! .......2006-06-27

I don't know how available Handel's oratario "Jephtha" is, but i purchased this CD and remain completely in awe of the air from Jeptha called "'Tis Heaven's All Ruling Power". It lends particularly well to the countertenor voice and Alfred of course, sounds "heavenly" singing it. If you are a Alfred Deller fan and don't have him singing these selections, I highly recommend this CD for sure!

5 out of 5 stars I have been listening to this recording since 1962.......1999-12-25

I have been listening to this recording since I was a freshman in college in 1962. I'm really glad they have re-issued this Vanguard recording on CD! The piece was long unknown to the general public. I especially like the use of the counter-tenor voice, it adds a special quality to this piece.
