Worthwhile, especially if you like Brahms.......2000-02-28
Johannes Brahms was one of the key figures in Romantic Piano Music. His output for the instrument was varied and large, and this four-disc set is ample testament to that output. As it was with their complete Beethoven Sonatas set (by Bernard Roberts), so it it here: Nimbus have enlisted a fine artist with a good command of the piano to record all of Brahms' solo piano music, and whilst I am not a Brahms addict myself, I am sure it will give great pleasure to collectors and serious Brahms fans.
I could offer a critique of all the works on these discs, but it is enough to single out a particular highlight. Martin Jones is particularly stunning with his rendition of the Hungarian Dances (which in their piano solo versions are not easy at all). The recording quality throughout is superb, enhancing the subtleties of Jones' performance.
All in all this is a worthwhile purchase. If anything, it is perfect for discovering Brahms in perhaps his most 'comfortable' genre. I should say that I came across this recording in the course of studying Romantic Piano Music for A-levels, and for that purpose it was invaluable.

It's gutsy for a young conductor and a second-tier orchestra to take on a program of showpieces, but Oue and the Minnesotans acquit themselves well, exhibiting flair and color in pieces that need them to make an effect. The big works are Liszt's Les Préludes and Ravel's Bolero. The Liszt gets a terrific reading--just listen to the warmth of the strings as they sing the melody about 3'40" in the delicacy of the wind phrases and the power of the grand climax. There's charm aplenty too, as in the lightly tripping Brahms Hungarian Dance. The lesser known works will please; Dinicu's "Hora" swirls vigorously and Klemperer's smiling "Merry Waltz" will happily surprise those who think him incorrigibly stolid. As usual for this label the sound is superior, with wide dynamics, sweet treble, burly bass, and oodles of detail and other audiophile virtues. An unalloyed delight! --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Recording.......2001-06-26
This is another topnotch Reference Recordings / MN Orchestra disc. All 15 minutes of Bolero is a perfect, gradual crescendo. And the brass in Liszt's Les Preludes will knock your socks off. I wish I could give this 10 stars!!!
Easy listening.......2000-08-04
The Minnesota Orchestra under its director Eije Oue has a marvelous set of musicians, but in my opinion they made too many records in the last years. Although none of the pieces on this record is really bad, with the exceptance of Otto Klemperer's Merry Waltz, the common denominator is popularity, the wellknown showpieces that lack the element of surprise. Liszt's Les Préludes is played adequately, but lacks the intensity of The Philadelphia Orchestra under Wolfgang Sawallisch (Water Lily Acoustics) and the Boléro by Ravel misses the jazz-influences Ravel intended.
The sound quality of this Reference Recording is outstanding, as usual.
Emotional!.......2000-07-28
I bought this CD as someone who knew Eiji Oue when he was in Boston, and I am thrilled with what he has done with the Minnesota Orchestra. The sound quality on this recording is great, and Eiji and his orchestra give an energetic and emotional performance. Having been a student at Interlochen Arts Camp for several years (and those of you who have been there know what I am talking about), I still cannot listen to "Les Preludes" without bursting into tears. The CD is a wonderful addition to anyone's collection, whether you are a fan of classical music or not.

Customer Reviews:
This recording is more valuable than a bag full of diamonds.......2006-06-09
This is probably the most valuable recording ever made in history of the violin (unless there's a recording of Paganini out there, which I'm only fantasizing about). You really get to see how the playing styles changed from the early 1900s to now.
Joachim, to me, was the hardest to get used to. His own composition, Romance in C Major, and Hungarian Dances Nos. 1 and 2 were just amazing; beautifully played. However, his Bach was very different than what I had expected. His Bourree was alright; it was listen-able, but his Bach Sonata in G minor: I. Adagio was disappointing. I'm very lenient and at the same time picky on Bach. I know that people have their own interpretations of Bach, and I respect that, but I only give consent to Nathan Milstein and Henryk Szeryng's recording of Bach. Maybe Heifetz as an alternative. Joachim twisted around the rhythms and there was a thrust in the bow in the very first chord, unlike the type you can do in the Bach Chaconne. But when I listened to it many times, the Bach wasn't so bad. It was actually quite genius in the sense that back then, many people played Bach quite differently. What amazed me the most about Joachim was that both the Hungarian Dances were played with AMAZING speed and near perfection, and he was at the age of 72 when he recorded this.
Sarasate, the one I find most valuable in this album, recorded many of his own compositions and some other ones. From his Zigeunerweisen to Habanera and others, they were all played amazingly. Sarasate probably had arms of steel and extremely swift fingers at the tempo he was playing everything. Sarasate skips many of the introductions, such as the introductions in Introduction & Tarantelle and Caprice Basque (or Vasco). He also skips in the beginning of the Zapateado, but they were all perfectly fine. My favorite recording of Sarasate was his Habanera. I just loved the way he played it. Sarasate also had a very nice staccato. Finally, what amazed me the most was his Bach Prelude from Partita No. 3 in E Major. It was played INSANELY fast. I compared the speed with Michael Rabin's recording of Paganini's Moto Perpetuo, and they were almost the same speed, Sarasate's Bach just a tad slower. It was played almost perfectly, too. Sarasate recorded all this when he was 60 years old.
Ah, for the finale, Ysaye. Much different from Joachim and Sarasate, Ysaye had his own style which appealed to me very much. The excessive vibrato and portamento was absolutely NOT excessive. It was used a lot, but not overly used. You can really see his huge vibrato and portamento in the Hungarian Dance No. 5 in G minor, when the tempo changes from its theme. Ysaye played amazingly. I really liked his style, and he played like a maestro. It's sad that Ysaye didn't have a chance to record his six sonatas. I would pay hundreds of dollars to have a recording of Ysaye playing his six sonatas, and see his own interpretation of them. Ysaye recorded all this when he was 52 years old.
I highly encouragein getting this album. Just a warning, this album is very hard to listen to. The quality is bad, obviously, with a lot of background noise because it was recorded a hundred years ago. It's not too bad to listen to but some parts get inaudible but recover almost instantly. This is a gem of the history of violins to have a huge composer like Sarasate playing his own compositions. Get this album now!
Very Valuable.......2006-03-10
It is very worthwhile to hear this recording at least once, especially if you are a violinist.
Would I play Sarasate like Sarasate? Beyond the fact that I can't, I probably wouldn't choose to. Does that make his interpretation wrong or inferior in any way? Not really. Not every pianist plays Rachmaninov like Rachmaninov, not every violinist plays Kreisler like Kreisler. In fact, if they did, the musical world would be a very boring place indeed.
I find Joachim's playing to be very interesting. The interpretation and range of portamentos is astounding. Yesaye's I find lush and beautiful.
Listening to Sarasate's recording of the third partita, I do have to confess I cringe. It is fast and sounds very pinched to me. It is, indeed, exACTLY as I expected from the composer of Zigunerweisen and the Carmen Fantasy. It does show some good technique; however. The tempo is insane, Sarasate must have had incredibly powerful arms at his age.
There are some unfortunate things that this recording brings to light. I would have very much liked for Joachim's recording of the Mendelssohn to be here, since he knew Mendelssohn personally, and his recording of the Brahms, since he had such an influiential part in it's composition. It also seems no recording of Wieniawsky or Vieuxtemps ever existed; or if they did they're not here, but this is just me wishing to hear these violinists play too, not a fault with the actual disk.
The most important recording ever!!.......2003-11-16
This is the most important recording ever! It is true that they are not perfect but even today with all the millions of cuts there are 2 or 3 notes on every recording that aren't good. Joachim plays Bach with a wisdom that is far beyond almost anybody playing today. Sarasate is now probably my favourite violinist. He has a style, grace, and elegance that is so personal that it captures the very essence of the 19th century. I say throw away your perfect intonation, your big sound, your wide vibrato. The most interesting thing about this style is the way that they don't "romanticize" the phrases nearly as much as today, giving the pieces a better overall conception. You don't remember something really special but rather the general impression. I have heard many violinists speak fondly of "the old guys" but never does it translate into the actual playing. Put on your 19th century ears. Let's throw out perfection for a more raw personal way of music making.
Historical Item.......2003-10-20
This CD's value comes mostly from its historical value, rather than the quality of the featured violinists' playing. If you are looking to enjoy the works featured on this disc, you would be better off listening to a modern day recording. If you want to listen to some interesting renditions of pieces played by the composer himself (Sarasate) and do not have a record player, this is a great CD to start with. His works, while not as great in musical triumph as works by Bach, Brahms, Mendelssohn, etc., do capture aspects of the Spanish culture very well. Joachim's rendition of his own transcription of Brahm's Hungarian Dance No.1 is perhaps the most soulful recording of the piece, the introduction reminiscent of Jan Kubelik's playing. Overall, I think we are better off with some record of these virtuoso's playing rather than none. These violinists helped to raise the standards for violin playing to what they are today.
Other noteworthy violinists of the past for which there are recordings are Leopold Auer, Jan Kubelik, and Fritz Kreisler (early recordings).
The Most Important Record Ever Made?.......2001-10-22
They key to appreciating the importance of this recording is to not try to listen to it through 21st century ears but through 19th century ears. This performance is remarkable in how it gives a key to the past AND guidance for the future of classical music. Really.

The best.......2007-05-23
We don't have conductors like Szell these days. He was the master of removing all but the music. In the case of Brahms a special challenge is the need to be strong and focused enough not to get self indulgent and bogged down. Rather one must stay true to the music. Few can do this. In addition to these recordings one thinks of the famous Heifetz/Reiner recording of the Brahms violin concerto and the Szell/Fleisher recording of the second Brahms paino concerto. These are all recordings that you can listen to over and over. But there is a danger here. If you get these recordings of the Brahms symphonies you will never be satisfied with any others again.
"A bit of musicality, please!!!!".......2006-03-30
This recording of Brahm's symphonies is musical garbage. George Szell was well known and critized for his precision. When dealing with classical greats like Mozart and Haydn, George Szell is one of the first conductors I seek after. I recommend his recordings of Mozart's 39th, 40th, and 41st. But!!! George Szell's abilities as a Romantic Period conductor (Brahms!) are lacking in the highest degree. Listening to this recording is like having to look at van Gogh's "Starry Night" painted with nothing but straight lines. The highest quality recording of Brahms's 'Third Symphony' that I've heard was recorded by Fritz Reiner and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. That recording comes on a disc that also includes and excellent, excellent rendition of Mendelssohn's "Hebrides Overture." As for BOXED SETs of the Brahm's Symphonies, Otto Klemperer's recording comes with my highest recommendations. Otto Klemperer KNEW the work of Brahms like few else. He even chided himself for writing pieces that sounded more like Brahms than like Klemperer. His recording of the Brahms Symphonies is available on EMI Classic's 'Great Recordings of the Century' label.
One of the best Brahms Symphonies Set.......2004-02-22
This set is truly one of the best recordings of Brahms that I have heard. The sound of Cleveland's strings is lush and the wind section was one of the greatest in history (John Mack on oboe, Robert Marcellus on clarinet). Listen especially to the second movement of the 3rd Symphony.

Backhaus was among the giants of 20th-century keyboard artists, renowned for his solid--some would say stolid--Beethoven and Brahms interpretations. The younger Backhaus was a more overtly virtuosic pianist with a wide repertory. This invaluable Pearl set covers his British recordings, starting in 1908 when he was only 24, and it includes composers and works he abandoned in later years when he pared his programs down to essential masterworks. So we get his only recordings of Rachmaninoff, whom he admired as the greatest among living piano composers, along with Bach, Scarlatti, and others. Backhaus's dazzling virtuosity can be heard in his abridged Brahms Paganini Variations, the Liszt, La Campanella, with its marvelously even runs, and the Weber, Perpetuum Mobile, with precise articulation at fast speeds, among many other examples. Some of his early electrical recordings fill out disc two, sounding fresher than most of the acoustics. Seth Winner's transfers on both well-filled discs are uniformly fine. Collectors of historical recordings will want these rarities. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:
A joyful set of dances that actually dance.......2005-10-18
English-born Andrew Mogrelia, currently the conductor of the San Francisco Ballet pit orchestra, has made a name for himself by being one of the best conductors on the Naxos label, where he oversees romantic ballet socres like Coppelia and Sylvia, along with later great balets by Tchaikovksy and Prokofiev. He has dance in his soul, and here he beats out some name conductors (Reiner, Abbado, Karajan) with aa set of the usually ho-hum Hungarian Dances of Brahms. Every note of this CD is full of joy and brio--I oculdnd't wait for the next number to appear. The Philharmonia Cassovia (even Google can't tell me anything about them) is a lively bunch, by no means first rate but equal to the task, and the somewhat roomy recording is fine. Altogether, a delightful surprise.
