Two great Jim Reeves collections!.......2006-11-04
This CD consists of two early collections released after the singers death. "Up Through The Years" (1965) and "Distant Drums" (1966).
"I Know One" is a nice track which Charley Pride scored a #6 hit with in 1967. "Young Hearts" and "Two Shadows On Your Window" are early examples of his late style (both recorded in 1957).
"Pride Goes Before A Fall" is a favourite of mine written by Leon Payne (he also wrote "I Love You Because"). This one even includes the sound of one or several accordions (a rarity in Reeves' music).
One track is done in Afrikaans: "Nooientjie Van Die Ou Transvaal", it's from an album Jim did for South Africa as he was enormously popular there.
The "Distant Drums" album contains several hits like: the title track, "Is It Really Over?", "I Missed Me", "Losing your Love", "This Is It", "Not Until The Next Time" (a hit in Norway), "Snowflake" (a hit in Norway). "Good Morning Self" is, in my opinion, one of the greatest he recorded. The lyrics are great, combined with Reeves' beautiful voice and music.
The reason I didn't give this album a full score is that six of the tracks are from Reeves' earlier period (before 1957). They are a fun listen but not as "smooth" as the later ones.
Anyway, those who love Jim Reeves' music will surely love this one!
It comes highly recommeded from a 27 years old fan.

Amazing album. One of a kind, unfortunately........2000-01-30
Awesome. Wildly creative, infectious and original. This album is not part of any genre -- it defines its own. This is some of the finest percussion ever recorded.
Awesome multi-talent percussionist...........1998-07-13
Brian Slawson is the epitome of the modern percussionist. His Juliard education is well displayed in all of his works - including Distant Drums which includes a cut with blues guitar legend Stevie Ray Vaughn. If you are a percussionist or just a lover of fine musical talent - you will want to have his music in your library. Feel free to email me for more info on Brian as I had the distinct pleasure of his instruction while I was in high-school.

Ruth Wyand draws on American roots music to frame her lyrical gift and demonstrate her strength as an accomplished guitarist, songwriter and vocalist. Ruth plays through out the U.S. and Europe from busking in the streets of Paris to festival stages with acts such as John Hammond, Little Feat, Dr.John, Little Charlie and the Nightcats, Melanie, Ellis Paul, and Les Sampou. She was selected a People's Choice Award winner 1998 by the Philadelphia Folk Factory. She is the president of the Garden State Songwiter's Association and does a variety of workshops and school music programs teaching guitar techniques,songwriting, and multitrack recording for children grades K through 12 as well as college courses in guitar and songwriting. Ruth has written, produced or played on folk, country, and blues artist CD's in Nashville, New York, Philadelphia and New Jersey. She has three CD's on the Bay Rat Records lablel; The Ruth Wyand Band - "Living in Doubt", Solo - "Live at the Mermaid" and the current one Solo - "Distant Drums". The first thing that strikes the listener is her powerful guitar playing. Ruth has a unique finger style technique that combined with her palette of tunings is a show in of it self but then she will switch gears and move on to a chugging swing piece and then go all the way back to a delta influenced slide guitar number. Her vocal accompaniment is at once both languid and athletic and the songs she writes reflect her humourous and compassionate nature.
