Editorial Reviews
5 stars Classic-CD November 1999 issue 117. Reviewer: Julian Haylock
Several violin recitals this month, of which Korfker's is outstanding. Berent Korfker possesses the ideal sound for Faure's exquisite A major Sonata, one of the very greatest chamber works of the nineteenth century. His eartweakingly pure intonation, ravishingly small-scale tone, and narrow, subtly inflected vibrato (shade of Christian Ferras) meltingly combine with Kana Yamaguchi's alluring pianism to produce one of the finest accounts of this wonderful score on disc. Only the slightly backward placing of the piano in any way modifies ones rapture at this glorious playing.

This fine team prove no less sensitive to the coruscating textural fluctuations and mood changes of Janacek's Sonata, a stunningly inventive work that absorbed the composer's attention on-and-off for seven years. Even the challenging gestural changeability of the finale seemingly holds no terrors for Korfker and Yamaguchi, who fearlessly integrate even the most alarming of musical contrasts into a satisfying whole.
