this collection deserves more than 5 stars.peter maag and the philharmonica hungarica are in top form.this is the best ever of schubert's fifth and eigth i have ever listened to.it is not karl bohm or leonard bernstein or george szell or lorin maazel.
truly the hungarians inspired by maag easily beat all the other top orchestras.
the orchestral texture is transparent with a perfect balance among the string sections ,the woodwind and the brass sections.peter maag obviously loves this music and brings out the heavenly beauty ,the pathos and the monumental dramatic quality of these works.
just listen to schubert's fifth second movement which ends with a heart rending cello phrase.
it is a shame that the well established record companies have not thought it fit to record more of peter maag.in my opinion he is one of the greatest ever conductors.
i will not exchange these performances for any other!

Take a fine organist, a crack brass ensemble, bathe in wide-ranging, vivid sound, and you've got a recipe for an exciting disc. That's what Telarc has done in this recording of a live concert by the Empire Brass Quintet in effective arrangements of Baroque favorites and rarities. It may seem odd to hear a Handel Violin Sonata or a Telemann Trio Sonata played by a brass-organ combo, but it works thanks to clever arrangements and superb playing. A highlight here is the Largo of the Handel work, where marvelous horn and trombone solos enhance its beauties. And of course, such favorites as Jeremiah Clarke's Trumpet Voluntary and the Prince of Denmark's March join Campra's stately Rigaudon and other stirring processional pieces. The SACD version adds another level of air and bite, but the CD layer of this hybrid disc is demonstration quality too. --Dan Davis

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:

5. Violin concerto

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

Having collected the entire "The Masterworks" series (including the Bach and Mozart Complete Works) this set is the 'clinker' of the bunch. First off... 6 CD's of Lieder 'historic' (pre-historic) recordings. No Overtures, No Orchestral Seranades, No Haydn Variations?? The performances of the Symphonies and the Concertos are shakey and not very well recorded. Brilliant Classics, who has done such a wonderful job with the Hadyn Complete Symphonies (licensed from Nimbus), the Mozart and Bach Complete sets, has stumbled a bit with this release.

Brilliant Classics has found a niche with their extremely low-price multi-disc collections of the work of a single composer or performer. The Bach, Mozart and Chopin Complete Editions are legitimately considered to be artistic and economical triumphs. But the Masterworks series are more uneven. Currently available from Amazon France at about a buck per CD, they're still a bargain for those interested in quickly building a music library. But it's worth keeping a few things in mind. Unlike the Bach and Mozart Editions, these are not always historically informed performances. In this Mendelssohn set, the Hanover Band puts in a cameo (in Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage), but most of the ensembles use modern instruments, techniques and proportions. This doesn't always work out, as in the case of the ponderously heavy recordings of the String Symphonies by an apparently full complement of Gewandhausorchester Leipzig strings (Mendelssohn likely wrote these early works for a much smaller group). The caliber of the performances varies too, ranging from good to poor, and from marquis musicians such as Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau to a few Dutch who-dats. The chamber musicians generally acquit themselves well (though the Octet recording is marred by an engineering flaw in the last movement, distortion, at least on my copy). But the symphonies suffer from some substandard performances, such as the Italian Symphony's live recording with not only audience noise but also ensemble flaws such as a distracting clarinet squeak in the first movement's recapitulation. Another strike is the lack of program notes. Brilliant's Complete Editions provide a booklet or CD-ROM with program notes, but here you'll need to do your own research.

Despite these shortcomings, this set is still good value (at least at Amazon France's current price of 31 Euros). And it's a fine way to become acquainted with Mendelssohn's music.

Let me preface this by saying that most of these works were not new to me - I own many other Mendelssohn CDs and have enjoyed his compositions for some time now. Also, this set is available much cheaper elsewhere, particularly from European retailers.
The symphonies are well-performed. 'Reformation' is an inspired live recording. The 12 string symphonies, written in Mendelssohn's youth, are also included. The concertos are exceptional - the violin concerto is as good as you'll find anywhere. The oratorios Elijah and Paulus are included, as well as the complete chamber works and a diverse assortment of choral works. The last few discs include the Lied ohne worte, the epic organ sonatas, and excellent renditions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and Fingal's Cave. While there are a few sketchy performances in the choral and chamber works, the performances and recordings are generally very solid, and the body of work couldn't be better.

      The music of Wallingford Riegger (1885-1961) is difficult to pigeonhole. On the basis of his Barberesque "Romanza" Op. 56a from 1953 and Coplandesque "Dance Rhythms" Op. 58a from 1955, one might mistake him for one of those trite and derivative composers of sub-Copland (or even sub-Thomson) "Americana". Both are "Gebrauchsmusik" (music written for a specific purpose) that have no reason to outlive their occasion (the first was written for a school orchestra and was meant to be not too difficult, the second for a dance company), quickly heard, quickly forgotten.

      But then comes the contemporary (1953) "Music for Orchestra" Op. 50, and one is reminded that in the 1920s Riegger was a member of the so-called "American Five", along with Ives, Cowell, Ruggles and the all-but forgotten figure, John Becker, and later an introductor of the Schoenbergian twelve-tone system in the United States. "Music for Orchestra" is quasi-serialist yet colorful and whimsical but also dramatic piece, as advanced as anything Sessions wrote in those years. The Third Symphony Op. 42 from 1948 is equally advanced for its days in its musical language, dodecaphonic, fugal, and again highly dramatic, of near-Bergian intensity in some places (Schoenberg's 5 Pieces Op. 16 also come to mind, but there is more of the "American Epic" and more robust rhythms in Riegger's composition). I wouldn't hesitate to call it one of the greatest American symphonies written in the 1940s, and I don't know many that approach its power and anger (Barber's Second Symphony, maybe?) - but I am not surprised that it didn't really establish the standing of Riegger, so advanced and non-immediately seductive is its language.

      According to the liner notes, Riegger himself classified his own music in four categories: "non-dissonant (mostly)", "impressionist", "partly dissonant" and "dissonant". The Concerto for Piano and Woodwind Quintet Op. 53 (from 1953 as the "Music for Orchestra") is neo-classical in its language but rather dramatic in atmosphere, somewhere between Janacek's Capriccio for Piano and Winds and Bartok's Piano concertos. The same is true of the earlier Nonet for Brass Op. 49 (1951), rather neo-classical in language and mischievously biting in atmosphere. Riegger is a master at eliciting a great range of colors despite the use of an instrumental group of similar timbre. The composer shows again his appetite for unusual instrumental combinations and sonorities in the short (4:15) "Movement for Two Trumpets, Trombone and Piano" written in 1960 and one of his last compositions, contrapuntally elaborate but full of dance-like, jazzy bounce.

      The Music for Brass Choir Op. 49 is an extraordinary work, so forward looking in its use of clusters for the sake of sheer sound color and atmosphere (rather than melody or harmony) as to evoke Ligeti's Atmospheres. And it was composed in 1949! The mood is ominous and dramatic. It should be a staple of the brass band repertoire.

      CRI has gathered together recordings of various origins, whose dates range from 1952 mono (the recording dates aren't given on the CD, but the Symphony was the recipient of the 1951 Walter Naumburg Recording Award - a year after Schuman's 3rd by Ormany and a year before Mennin's Third by Mitropolous -, then recorded in April 1952 and originally released as Columbia ML 4902, paired with Mennin's composition) to stereo 1967 (the works for brass and winds). The sound is nowhere terrific but everywhere acceptable, sounding the more distant in the 1956 recordings of Romanza, Dance Rhythms and Music for Orchestra (originally on LP CRI-117 with works by Avshalomov and Cazden). The original CD was published in 1990, and the liner notes expressed the hope that the reissue would help spawn a revival of interest in the music of Riegger. I don't think it has, lamentably, but this disc makes me want to explore more.

      Since the deplorable demise of CRI, New World Records has acquired the label's invaluable catalog, and I have the CD as a recent New World reissue. I've experienced difficulties playing it on my portable Sony MP3 CD player (it stops, even when I barely move). It seems to play fine on my normal player, so I thought at first that my Sony was breaking down. But CDs from other labels play alright, and I've experienced similar problems with other NW-reissued CRI CDs ("The Unknown Ives" by Donald Berman), so I am suspecting that New World copying process might be the problem.

      Wallingford Riegger's work is so fine, it used to be incredibly maddening to have to find a little work here, a little there, pieced in there, shoved in here. Now, all these fine performances are gathered together and simply put on one disk where we can get the measure of the man.

      And what a man, and what art! The old Columbia Symphony No. 3 is wonderful to have back, remastered and joyous. Hanson, of course, makes the most of it, and the '53 sound is so good you don't realize its clarity and naturalness is mono.

      Antonini and the Santa Cecilia Orchestra present their contributions equally well, in excellent sound, gathered from old CRIs and what not, as is the Oslo material. The Oslo group wouldn't be considered a liability only if you hadn't heard the standards of Rome and Rochester first, but you have to forgive it because what it handles is so good.

      Over time, critics have praised all these works to the skies, so there's no need for me to do it again. My contribution is to just urge you to get this and enjoy a lot of superb music by a supremely talented (and oftentimes funny and quirky) American composer...all on one, fine, fine disk!

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent Baroque collection - everyone should have this!.......2002-06-18

      This is a remarkable collection of Baroque music. I've heard a lot of Baroque music and I am very discriminating about performance and sound quality. This set is a winner and a fantastic bargain... Somehow they've managed to choose what is truly "best" from the period (for example I've always felt Bach's Brandenburg Concertos # 2, 3, 5 were the best of the six, while 1,4,6 were relatively weaker - and lo and behold this collection includes 2,3,and 5) while missing very little if anything that "should have" been here (of course a 10 or 12 CD collection would have been even better, but you have to stop somewhere).

      The performances here are excellent, and the recording quality is very high. I disagree with the person who claims this isn't "audiophile quality", because I don't think it could get much better unless it were on another medium such as SACD. I didn't particularly notice coughing on Handel's "Messiah" but Messiah fans would likely prefer a complete performance of that particular work anyway (the excerpts from Messiah here are complete pieces, but this set doesn't include the entire 2 hour or whatever Messiah). These do not sound like "outtakes", what kind of a comment is that? Somebody worked very hard to put this collection together, and they did a fantastic job (and I have zero affiliation with this, I just feel the truth as I see it should be told).

      Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" is presented in it's entirety (ok, it's not the entire Vivaldi Opus 8, but it is the entire Four Seasons as normally found on any "Four Seasons" CD). There are so many great works here, which a lot of people will recognize even if they didn't know the actual piece or composer (or even that it was from the Baroque era). There's even the Mouret fanfare made famous as the "Masterpiece Theater" theme music. Yes this is a great "introduction" at a great price - which might get people to explore Baroque music further, but it's also a fairly complete collection which will suit a lot of people as such (i.e. for everyone who appreciates most any type of music these works should be "essential", but also the 4 CD collection might be all that a casual listener would "need" from the Baroque era). I feel that most people would be thrilled with this set; about the only way it might have been better would be to include information about each piece and about the Baroque era in general (there is no "text" at all with this set).

      Nice cheap way to get into Baroque music. Unfortunately it's not the best recording you can get but it should be adequate enough for a non-audiophile. I've been unable to bring myself to listening to it again since I noticed that someone coughs in the background (very noticeably) during Handel's Messiah. Wonder if this is an outtakes CD.
