Cygnus is one of the most intriguing new music ensembles to have emerged in recent years. With its mixed instrumentation of winds, strings and plucked sounds, Cygnus offers the present day composer a bold new spectrum of colorful combinations to write for. And given the ensembles devotion to commissioning new repertoire from a stylistically broad range of composers, combined with the virtuosity with which these pieces are performed, Cygnus presents a consistently exotic and entertaining listening experience. The disc begins with David Clamans gone for foreign- a flashy, exuberant suite in five movements, which draw from an Indian-inflected quasi-rock idiom. William Andersons A Giddy Thing for mandolin and pre-recorded midi plucked sounds takes its inspiration from a comment at the end of Shakespeares Much Ado About Nothing. The Japanese/American composer Akemi Naitos Mindscape integrates the experimental with the conventional: sensuous melodies co-exist side by side with multiphonics; conventional notation sits alongside graphically notated music. Throughout, Naitos sensitive and poetic ear shapes the musical flow. Rolv Yttrehuss Plectrum Spectrum is a tour de force of rhythmic energy, using Cygnuss full complement of plucked instruments- mandolin, banjo and guitars. Milton Babbitts beautiful Swan Song No. 1 is remarkable for its relaxed and transparent instrumental interplay- the full ensemble rarely playing at the same time, the flow of the music, inexorable. All of the pieces on this recording were composed for Cygnus.

Explorations Indeed: Adventurous New Music........2004-01-25

David Holzman is brilliant! This recording is yet another example of Holzman's unique capabilities. Aside from this, there is a thread that ties this great pianist to the music of two of the composers on this recording: that of the German born composer Stephan Wolpe (1902-1972). [Wolpe was a student of, among others, most notably Anton Webern]. David Holzman is known for his exceptional performances and recordings of Wolpe's piano music. Not surprisingly, the most engaging pieces on this CD come from two composers who studied composition with Wolpe: Raoul Pleskow and Matthew Greenbaum. Pleskow's "Piano Sonata No. 2" and Greenbaum's "Amulet" both benefit from Holzman's experience and understanding of Wolpe's musical world. - A highly recommended recording for those interested in the development of new music for the piano and the piano music of Wolpe and Webern.
