The music on this disc centers around the flute (the soloist is Susan Glaser) though it is not, per se, standard sonata repertoire for accompanied flute. Instead, what we have here are several non-standard pieces employing the flute, the harp (Emily Mitchell), the viola (Stephanie Griffin), and various percussion instruments (Matthew Gold) taken from mostly contemporary sources. Most approachable (in Western terms) is Stella Sung's Dance of the White Lotus Under the Silver Moon which combines melodious flute passages that move in and out of Japanese atonal constructions (these are provided by the harp). The work is quite beautiful, and beautifully done. Zhou Long's simple Su is a duo for flute and harp and makes more extreme use of the flute as it melds both Western and Chinese modalities. Oddly, it sounds neither particularly Chinese nor specifically Western. Su, though, is definitely postmodern and segues nicely into Tan Dun's harrowing In Distance, with its rigorous atonal elongations on the flute and stark silences punctuated by the harp and percussion. More than any other work on this disc, In Distance demands patience and an appreciation for the unusual tonal elements Dun is trying to sustain. Korean composer Jacqueline Jeeyoung Kim's Tiger Chasing the Wind is a bit more melodic with its occasional nod to Korean folk elements, here making strong use of the viola. Hwang Yoon Hee's dharma-Dharma also weaves hints of Korean folk melodies, but seems a bit more conscious of the importance of melody to Western ears. Altogether, this is an excellent collection of post-modern works for flute, but it is not for the squeamish.

I love this CD. I am a massage therapist and a doula, and I have found that this CD puts people into an incredible state of relaxation -- in addition to being a pleasure to listen to while I work. It is also the most requested CD to in my birth bag when I am with a mother in labor.

Haunting Melodies.......2000-06-25

The music contained on this CD is soothing and hypnotic. The songs are not just for children. I like to listen to this when I need to find some "me time." "Tu Tu Teshcote" is haunting and peacful, and playing "Kunolounkwa" before bedtime helps my little one ease into dreamland.

Lullabies for All.......2000-04-12

Order this album now! These songs are lullabies for all ages. The songs from Native American singers are simply produced and simply beautiful. They will lull you into a state of happiness. Joanne Shenandoah has the voice of an angel. Lorain Fox sings a song that I hum to myself before I go to sleep. Dorothy White Horse's song is completely charming. Alph Secakuku's voice is powerful and hypnotic. Don't miss the chance to share this CD with your children or the child within yourself.

As a child I listened to "teddy bear's picnic" and I wanted to have a cd to hear it again. What a bonus to also get these other songs!! They are all playful music...happy tunes which lift your mood. Some remind me of music from old cartoons. I am very pleased with this cd.

I read with interest the description of "Feminine Escapes", a CD which includes Koch's selections from a CD I previously released on KIC. In fact, Mr. Robert Weirich, Mr. Barry Snyder and I recorded an entire CD of works by Amy Beach and Rebecca Clarke. I do think it was an excellent recording, due in large part to my colleagues' boundless artistry, and the work of my colleagues in the recording studio at Eastman School of Music. I am glad to see that Koch thought well enough of it to reissue parts of it, though they never communicated with me about it. I am happy to report to any who don't know her work that Marin Alsop was aready a wonderful conductor early in her career and has developed into a world class artist. Last, I would caution listeners not to expect to hear me playing the one song (voice and piano) which I am listed as performing with Mr. Weirich, as I am a definitely a cellist, not a singer.

Elegant, sprightly music that recreates the 1900s-1910s in authentic arrangements that don't sound creaky to modern ears. Audiophile-quality sound, as well. Highly recommended!

I have owned this recording previously in its vinyl LP format. It was one of the most natural sounding records I had ever heard -- of the highest quality audiophile sound. The new CD follows as a sonic equal to the LP. The music of mostly popular tunes of the Victorian era is magnificently played and most enjoyable to listen to from start to finish. Absolutely superb!

The following is an excerpt from the review in the July/August 2000 issue of Fanfare magazine, page 333:

This is a collection of works by five 20th-century composers from, or culturally connected to, the Far East who offer music that is redolent of their own cultures but that is rigorously organized in such ways that they can speak to people inured with Bach's language. Stella Sung, the American-born composer of the lead track-Dance of the White Lotus Under the Silver Moon-has long been active as a pianist and composer. Her aphoristically poetic lead piece on this offering is Impressionistic in ways that would have made Debussy smile.

Zhou Long was born in 1953 in Beijing. His education temporarily halted by Mao's Cultural Revolution, he served on a state farm in a remote area of the country where the natural landscape, with its roaring winds and fierce land fires, made an unshakable impression. From all of this he created an inimitable musical language. In Su-Recollections Trace Back to Ancient Times for flute and harp, one can taste something that is at once quintessentially Chinese and uncannily universal.

Everything on this offering is realized fluently and effortlessly by flutist Susan Glaser and harpist Emily Mitchell. Moments of easy respite for exhausted Yuppies at the ends of their exhausting days of broking stocks? I don't think so. This is real music that demands and deserves active listening, and that will reward those efforts tenfold.
