Customer Reviews:
WITHOUT QUESTION, ONE OF MY FAVORITE DISCS IN MY ENTIRE COLLECTION.......2006-01-29
I am always looking for new female artists to listen to, as that is my favorite genre by far. I love the sounds of Tori, Sarah, and Alanis. I saw this on the shelf at a local Tower Records and made it a point to go back home and sample some cuts of Beth on the internet. I was taken in immediately with the first couple of 30-second cuts. So much so, that I ran right back out to Tower to by the disc.
Not many CDs blow me away right out of the wrapper, but to say this one did would be a huge understatement. This CD instantly became one of my favorite CDs out of my many hundreds of discs and I played it over an over (and still do). I liked every single song on the CD and started ordering copies for friends and family around the country that also like the same genre. Every single person I sent it to had a very similar reaction as mine. They were just amazed at everything Beth could do from her incredible piano, to her beautiful lyrics, to her superb voice. I even went to her website www.bethwaters.com to order a copy of her first CD "Over the Tide", which is also another wonderful CD.
Beth is actually a local performer here in the San Francisco Bay area and I have seen her several times. She is excellent in concert and, to me, it is just a matter of time until she is a famous musician/singer/songwriter. That is why I try to see her as often as I can, as there will come a time when many people will wish they had seen her in these intimate settings when they had the chance.
Well, I think I am running out of adjectives. All I can say is that if you like this genre of music, I find it just about impossible to think that you will not be completely amazed with this CD. And, if you live in the Bay area, I highly recommend monitoring her website regularly to find her upcoming local performances so you can see her close up, while you still can. Enjoy!!!
Still Waters.......2006-01-05
The world has no shortage of earnest young female singer/songwriters, and while I'm a fan of the genre I'd be the first to admit that a fair bit of it is self-indulgent or overly precious or even worse, just plain dull. Beth Waters though, has enough going for her as a songwriter that this self-titled release (her second album) never falls into those traps.
Waters' songs, which are mostly of the meditative, reflective variety, are based around poignant and interesting piano arrangements and have a warm, smooth sound that washes over you quite beautifully. Her voice though, is the real selling point, and as vocals go, Beth Waters are near perfect. It's a beautifully pure instrument - ethereal yet earthy and always a pleasure to listen to. Waters does the downtempo ballad thing well, but every now and then it's nice to hear her voice soar - as in the chorus of the powerful opening song 'Sweaters' or in the quite wonderful 'Spun Sugar', a song so good that Jewell would give her right arm for it. Another highlight is 'Down To Me' which has a nice sense of drama and tension to it.
With a little more range and originality in her material, Beth Waters could really go far, but for now, this is a solid, well produced collection of songs that will likely appeal to fans of Sarah McLachlan, Tori Amos or Jewell.
It's a good thing CDs don't wear out.......2004-12-09
Cause I've been playing this album to death. There's something about the simple musical repetition, the sparseness at times and the beautifully and almost painful lyrics that grabbed me and wouldn't let go. Most artists are reluctant to indulge in personal tragedy or heartbreaking memory and instead do the tried and true...love longs, breakup songs, poor poor me songs. Not Beth, she sounds sincere. There's mood, feeling and truth in this album.

The best investment of my life : buying this record.......2004-10-15
Oh my, Beth Waters has touched me like no other artist. I can't believe she isn't more well known. Her album is beautiful, tragic and surreal. Every minute of this album is gold.
Every track really is a standout but there are a couple that stick with you. The album ends with the tear jerker 'Dad' - it's extremely sad yet so beautiful. I also loved 'Philosophy', 'Down To Me', 'Blue and White', 'Mom', 'Slut Song' and 'Surrealistic'...though all the others are amazing too. This woman must be from another planet because these songs are too good to be real - her voice is soft, beautiful and a breath of fresh air compared to what we've been getting in 2004. A meaningful singer songwriter with a wonderful piano to accompany her vocals and lyrics.
People have said she's too similar to Tori Amos and Sarah McLachlan - why? Because she has a piano? Jeez, what's with people thinking all female piano players are the same? Although I love both Tori and Sarah (Tori is my all time favourite), Beth is outstanding. I would recommend this album to anyone - if I had tons of money, I would buy a copy and give it out to random people. This kind of album comes out once in a blue moon:
One that can change your life. For the better -
Thank you, Beth.
This album is AMAZING.......2004-04-24

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03
I owned this disc for more than 12 years already. The CD cover was already the third one.
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.
something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07
when i listened to this concerto, the first impression was something deadly wrong. if you want to portray and describe a river, the best way is to start from its origin, it might be just a trickle of dripping water and a small stream at first, then when going down, meet and entwine with other small streams, it gradually evolving into a great river all way down to the ocean. that's the way how you use the music to portray a river.
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.
Contains many piano solo treasures.......2006-03-26
The most important thing about this CD is its beautiful solo piano music from classical Chinese literature. You'll be amazed and delighted.
Trust me~ You will never get tired of it........2004-08-07
This is an excellent album that worth adding to your collection. Moreover, such great music for such low price, there is no reason you shouldn't buy it.
Very nice Music.......2003-01-15
I've heard The Yellow River Cantata for long time before I got this CD, this CD would be a very nice CD on your collection. And when I came to Yellow River (Hoang He) in the summer and spring, I knew this concerto said the trust: The river is always changing, savage and quiet. There is enough Asian spirit on this CD. As you know, every old chinese word and song are based on a story (called Gu dian, means classical) and if you know much about chinese stories you will feel completly this CD. One of famous Gu Dian is the fighting of Chinese people against the flood every year at the river's banks, for thousand years. You can find more information and "Gu dian" about this river in Chinese histories or stories.

Beautiful Piano concerto coupled with bland piano pieces.......2000-06-21
The "Yellow River Concerto" is a work of genious. Each movement describes the river with ease and clarity. The concerto opens with a sweeping view of the majestic river, followed by a cheerful description of the fisherman. It is interluded with a thoughtful tribute to the riches the river provides to the fisherman. The ode to the Yellow River is a beautiful track in ballad style. It is very peaceful with a tint of lament. The Yellow River in Wrath opens with the peaceful river and then follows to the river in storm, portrayed by heavy piano chords and excessive orchestration. Defend the Yellow River concludes the concerto with a triumphant battle and march scene to bring an end to this concerto illustrating the Yellow River, and ultimately Chinese river life. The short piano works that couple the concerto are rather uninspired and tasteless. A few of the works have their short moments but the rest of the short piano tracks end up being tiresome.

Album Description
Beth Anderson is a composer of new romantic music, text-sound works, and musical theater. Born in Kentucky, she studied primarily in California with John Cage, Terry Riley, Robert Ashley, and Larry Austin at Mills College and the University of California at Davis. She lives in Brooklyn and produces Women's Work, a concert series that enjoyed its premiere season in February 2004. Kyle Gann writes: There's an aspect of late 20th-, early 21st-century music that I half-kiddingly refer to as 'the simulation of normalcy.' Let me explain. The guiding principle of modernist music had been Ezra Pound's 'make it new.' Mid-century composers tried to make music that sounded crazy, strange, like nothing you'd ever heard before. The one-upmanship involved in that quest eventually got out of hand - or, at least, it left audiences behind, who gave up looking for recognizable features or points of entry into increasingly abstract and complex sound-structures. And so the generation that came of age in the 1970s inherited a logical double-bind worthy of a Zen koan. On one hand they had the same need to express originality and personality as their forebears. On the other, they needed to write music attractive enough, communicative enough, to kickstart a new new-music audience again pretty much from scratch, the traditional classical audience having more or less abandoned interest in anything outside the standard repertoire. What the best of these composers came up with is often a music that wears its originality on the inside: a music whose tonalities and textural consistency are not all that foreign from popular or classical music you're already used to, but whose underlying quirks make it a more challenging experience than you first think. All this is especially true of the aspect of Beth Anderson's music found on this disc. We have an extended piano solo; some songs; some piece for violin and piano. Nothing strange about any of that (though I'll admit, the concluding Cleveland Swale may be the only piece ever written for piano and two double basses). The music is mostly tonal. It is generally pretty, even lyrical. It even uses humorous poems and nursery rhymes. The pieces conform to genre, more or less. Your first impression may be that it's pretty simple stuff, possibly even naïve. But on close listening, such impressions turn out to be misleading
This is not 'normal' music. But on a certain level it sure stimulates normalcy."

"Venetian Dream" - Marianne Flemming shrugs off pigeon holing. A refreshing blend of imaginativelyrics, endearingly funny stories, sharp musicality, and a knowing voice that swings, soothes, scats and sighs.
Customer Reviews:
never wake me up!.......2000-04-11
Who would want to wake up from this venetian dream? Marianne Flemming takes her listeners on a dreamy vocal journey of life, love and understanding, accompanied by multilayered musical tones and undertones to leave us breathless; the way one wakes from an exotic dream. Don't wonder if you will like the cd, because you will. This performer plays to everyones heart. Her music is deep, accessible, provocative and fun. I have been following Marianne for almost twenty years now and her maturity has not thwarted the wonderful innocence and honesty she gives us all through her music. There is nothing mundane or average here. Ventetian dream explodes with acousitc, as well as rock. It drifts around jazz and even cradles the blues. Being a Floridian, the Islands are never far away either. The mix is intoxicating, the performer absolutely someone to listen to. A music artist, a song stylist, a great technical musician, and have you heard her sing yet?

A music artist, a song stylist, a great technical musician, and have you heard her sing yet?
Eclectic and superb.......1999-08-02
