This is the penultimate volume of the Hyperion recordings of the St. Paul's Cathedral Psalter, in the version recently revised by John Scott. Here are 21 psalms, the strictly numerical sequence broken for the first time by the omission of any setting of Psalm 119, the longest and most quietly meditative of the psalms. Following the Church of England from the 17th to 20th centuries, what is most notable is the continuity of style, the sublimation of individual expression to a higher purpose. With the confidence of a nation sure of its place in the divine order, this is the quintessentially English foundation of the 20th-century lineage of Howells, Vaughan Williams, and Tavener. Vaughan Williams would edit his own English Hymnal, as well as write the great Mass in G Minor, while besides Howells's Requiem, the composer wrote numerous settings of the Evening Service. --Gary Dalkin

I continue to be impressed with the St. Paul Cathedral Choir. In terms of presenting Anglican chant, I have heard none better. The pointing to these chants is according to a new system used at St. Paul's but the chant tones themselves span the tradition from Tallis and Purcell, to contemporary 20th century composers.

    If you like Anglican chant, then you will enjoy this CD. It is very prayerful and worthy to be listened to. My only negative comment would be that St. Paul's is terrible to record in. The reverb time is fine for the organ, but the choir always sounds mushy and "cloudy". Fuzzy is another word that comes to mind. St. Paul's choir is very good, but the recording just doesn't do them the justice they deserve.
