Amazon.com essential recording

Long regarded as the quintessential interpretation of the most popular and best-loved symphony ever written, this performance of the Fifth has everything: passion, precision, drama, lyric beauty, and a coiled fury in the first movement that sets your pulse racing from the very first note. Carlos Kleiber has made very few recordings in his distinguished career, but almost all are special. If you own no other copy of this symphony, this is the one to get. It comes with an exceptional performance of the Seventh--not quite as gripping as the Fifth, but definitely one of the great ones. There is classical music, and there are classic recordings of classical music. This one's a classic. -- David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars a legendary recording.......2007-03-06

"For all Kleiber's notable work, there will be a lingering regret that such a natural and brilliant talent did not achieve even more." - The Guardian

Even Beethoven legends like Karajan could not emulate Kleiber's success with these 2 symphonies. The 5th Symphony, as commercially overplayed as it is, becomes something completely different under his baton; the final movement is especially dramatic, rivaling the energy of an actual live recording. The 7th Symphony is not so superior - other conductors have come closer to this benchmark - but the 2nd movement (again overplayed) is truly something special. The recording, made over 30 years ago, sounds just as good as anything made today.

With 100+ recordings, my review seems somewhat superfluous, as well :)

5 out of 5 stars Simply revelatory.......2007-02-12

To be able to generate such passion and electricity especially in the studio seems exactly what Beethovan wanted the music at the time. To me this version puts all other versions out of court.

5 out of 5 stars An ultimate Beethoven interpretion of Sym 5 and Sym 7.......2007-02-06

Carlos Kleiber who was relatively unknown until fairly recently, has created a masterpiece. In effect he has been rediscovered. His father was no mean figure in classical music during WWII in South America and the son seems to have inherited a great deal of inspirational genius from Dad. The Viena Philharmonic is playing in its best form. This recording will outlive most others for musical excellence, precision, feeling and soul. Technically and musically, this is by far the most thrilling recording of our time. The technical sound is flawless, the inspiration is impeccable. The recording of both symphonies sustains the level of awe and excitement not usually found on most recordings of Beethoven. Oh, dear, would that Carlos had recorded the Missa Solemnis and other iconic monuments by Beethoven.

5 out of 5 stars Father Knows Best.......2007-01-20

It is comforting that occasionally a performance of a piece from the basic repertoire transcends the clamor of our feverish opinions and ascends to its singular place in the pantheon on wings of almost universal approval. Carlos Kleiber's incisive reading of Beethoven's C-Minor symphony
produced a singular recording that seemed to set a new standard of excellence. It is a clinic on conducting: propulsive, seamless, trance-inducing. But for this listener, Carlos Kleiber's always-interesting dynamism and fierce attention to detail does not eclipse his father's earlier performance with the Concertgebouw, available on both CD and an excellent vinyl recording. Erich Kleiber's band, excellent in its time, sounds a little scruffy compared to the VPO. There are a few intonation problems here and there. But the performance amounts to an excavation and reinvention of Beethoven's spirit. The finale achieves a white-hot redemptive power that must have exhausted and liberated the musicians at the same time. They play as one, invincibly sprinting on the high wire. Carlos Kleiber had his father's cunning instrumental sense, his steely discipline, and probably excelled him in his ability to maintain orchestral balances. But his father was one of the few musicians to have captured the C-Minor's Sisyphean journey in all of its impossible striving. Whenever I listen to Carlos' version of Beethoven's Fifth, I contentedly marvel at his command of his orchestra. Whenever I listen to Erich's version, I am consumed, emptied, replenished, and somehow changed.

4 out of 5 stars Only the first movement........2006-12-12

This is a great recording for track no. 1. Kleiber seems to lose focus after that.. the beautiful melodic counterpoint of the second melody is mushed out. the fugue in the third movement simply sprawls about. I don't see what the hype is all about when you have Wilhelm Furtwangler's wartime fifths. Kleiber's recording can't be compared to these far more superior outings..

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the whole family.......2007-01-04

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

5 out of 5 stars More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

5 out of 5 stars One is better but this is still awesome!! Gotta have it!.......2006-01-10

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute joy, and endless fun!.......2005-11-15

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven Collection.......2007-05-14

I just got this for my brother-in-law as a gift and he loves it!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2007-01-24

Having Beethoven's Symphonies in one, very affordable, set is heaven! The recordings are clear and crisp. Each symphony is truly a masterpiece from the very soft tones of the woodwinds to the thundering sounds of horns. It is amazing to listen to certain passages of Beethoven and realize the genius and otherworldliness of his talent.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to beethoven's symphonies........2007-01-11

The sound is excellent, and the musicianship and conducting is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Beethoven Collection.......2006-07-23

Beethoven is my favorite composer. No matter how upset or tired I am, his music calms me down, just like a big, gentle hug.
But the cheap CDs have poor quality. And the good ones are too expensive for me. When I found this collection, with such a good price on Amazon.com, I couldn't believe it. Shortly after I purchased it, I received it. The quality is great. I am enjoying it. Thank you

Hoda

5 out of 5 stars Top music!.......2006-07-19

Everything else you can get over, but classical music like Beethoven is stuff you just can't get sick of. A whole collection of Beethoven's Symphonies for such a small price, Wow!. Classical music is so relaxing and peaceful that you can't go wrong with spending time chillin out to this pure classic. The symphonies are great but after this you've got to go get the sonata's etc and I guarantee you won't be dissapointed!

Think about it, they don't call it classical for nothing.

In 2006, the 25-year-old Venezuelan Gustavo Dudamel's star on the international scene is rising fast, with prestigious conducting assignments and this CD of two of Beethoven's most-popular and often-recorded symphonies. It's a bold calling card for a label that has outstanding versions of these symphonies by the likes of von Karajan, Abbado, and Carlos Kleiber, among others. If Dudamel doesn't eclipse those or others atop the mountain of Beethoven symphony recordings, he gives fine performances brimming with vitality and excitement. His youth orchestra sounds as good as many better known ensembles, playing with spontaneity and technical expertise. Dudamel excels in painting vivid orchestral colors and lending rhythmic impetus to the fast movements of both symphonies, surely a prerequisite for conveying the power of the Fifth and the dancing rhythms of the Seventh. But he does tend to exaggerate dynamics, following powerful orchestral outbursts with barely audible solo or section passages. And his slow movements, while decently done, tend to lack flow and energy. Still, an impressive debut, heralding a welcome new face on the international conducting scene. --Dan Davis

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Moving.......2007-06-27

Somehow this particular version moved me. Maybe I was not expecting much from it, but it has some undelying force in the music that really touched some fiber in me. And that I think is the signal of a great musical performance.

5 out of 5 stars " A Revelation".......2007-06-17

In these performances of Beethoven symphonies, ones already recorded earlier and frequently by the great orchestras of the world, up and coming conductor Gustavo Dudamel, leading something called the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela, nevertheless produces revelations of a sort. As if rubbing the familiar scores clean of the accumulated tarnish of the ordinary, he and his energetic group, largely made up of former street kids, clearly put into fresh and welcome prominence that revolution in sound dynamics Beethoven introduced into music. Whereas soft passages still have a Mozartian delicacy and dance-like grace, forte ones have a thrilling power and majesty new in Western music. The transition from the 3rd to 4th movement of the 5th symphony, where Dudamel produces a wonderful rise in sound from near inaudibility to joyful sonic grandeur, is especially illustrative in this regard.
Though the orchestra here may not be the world's most accomplished, its limitations pale into insignificance before its skill in communicating an obvious love of the music being played. While soft passages receive what can only be described as lingering, almost lover-like caresses, loud and spirited ones convey a ferocious passion and energy which take the breath away. These are performances not to be overlooked.

5 out of 5 stars A Debut Recording For the Ages.......2007-06-02

Does Sir Simon Rattle's comment count for anything about these stupendous performances? He said (of Dudamel and the Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela) and I quote: "THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT THING HAPPENING IN CLASSICAL MUSIC ANYWHERE". Make that in music anywhere, period.

5 out of 5 stars Two Powerful Forces of Nature Soaring Above the Heavens.......2007-05-26

What an experience to behold: A beautiful, young powerhouse at the helm of an incredibly amazing orchestra of young people who are product of an equally impressive musical educational system. The other part of the equation that makes this recording even more sublime is that they are interpreting the music of Beethoven - his Symphonies 5 and 7. Gustavo Dudamel, THE MAESTRO OF THE 21ST CENTURY, commands every nuance, note to dance, cry, sing - to provoke and reach to the inner depths of the soul. The Simon Bolivar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela delivers each work with power, sensitivity with its exceptional form of musicianship and expression that leaves one yearning for more!!

Music is a healing potion designed to create joy and move the human spirit. As I listen to this recording, I am deeply reminded of the beauty and grandeur that creativity offers to make life a wonderful place in which to be a part.

5 out of 5 stars The flaming torch of the genius!.......2007-01-20

It' s very difficult for me to talk - as Venezuelan citizen - with meridian objectivity, about the stature and mercurial emotional power Dudamel confers to every score he conducts. He has been born with that ominous inner fire, in order to express with admirable eloquence, the oneness contained in the core of every Opus conducted by him.

The countless testimonials all around the world seem to confirm it. This prodigious and very young master of the baton (26) simply has no limits, so we will really hope and wish from him to lead us for unexplored roads into the enormous musical universe.

Bravo maestro!

This is a surprisingly fine Beethoven cycle. Herbert Kegel had a reputation as a modern music specialist, and with good reason: He was a certified East German communist intellectual who killed himself shortly after the Berlin Wall came down--perfect for the wilder excesses of the modern German school. But he also had a very idiomatic feel for Beethoven as these objective, tautly rhythmic, and excitingly played performances prove. At super budget price, this set is worth considering. --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Great Beethoven Cycle.......2007-06-20

Most of my music is on LP or I have access thru Rhapsody. I picked these cds up as part of the 10 CD Beethoven Platinum Collection. Kegel does the first 5 discs, the same discs as in the boxed set here.

I am a niggardly (it means frugal on steroids) Scandinavian who is always trying to stretch a nickel into a dollar. Yet, every time I pursue this course, a little voice whispers in my ear, "You get what you pay for." The thrill of bargain hunting is finding a great value at a mere pittance. This results in left brain/right brain nirvana. I picked up the 10 CDs for about $10 and they sound great, especially the Beethoven Symphonies and especially the 9th. They are also very well recorded including excellent db master line levels.

The other great thing about bargain hunting is that if the purchase is a dud, you are only out a pittance! Just about the worst feeling is paying a premium and buying crapola. So, if you do buy these discs and you do not like them as I did, hopefully your wallet will not be emptied.

4 out of 5 stars a fine combination of quality and value.......2005-12-29

This is a fine set of Beethoven symphonies, well played and recorded, except I think the recording level of the ninth is a bit lower than the rest of the symphonies (might just be my ears). You don't get fancy liner notes or fabulous photographs of the orchestral forces, but the performances are quite solid; the best being the opening of the fifth and the chorale finale of the ninth.

5 out of 5 stars THIS SET IS AN ABSOLUTE STEAL.......2005-12-20

The performance of Symphony No. 5 in this set absolutely kicks serious butt- it's the most powerful, driven Fifth I've ever heard- worth the price of the whole set alone!!!! The rest of the CD's are excellent as well, but the Fifth in this set reigns supreme!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2005-09-26

This is an excellent series of recordings. The peak of which, of course, comes in the final CD with the 9th Symphony. The instruments are perfectly mixed so that one section doesn't outweigh another. The solosists are superior. The orchestra is crisp and precise. This is one of the best recordings of the nine symphonies out there. And it's a great value.

4 out of 5 stars Pleasing overall..........2004-07-14

Beethoven's Symphonies are very popular among the classical community, and hence there are many versions and sets to choose from. This box set is wonderful for a classical lover who desires to obtain the complete symphonies, but can't afford to spend a hundred dollars in the process. This is by far not the best performance ever recorded by any means, but overall, it stays close to the music and is very traditional. So if you desire to gain a better appreciation for Beethoven's symphonies, but aren't willing or are unable to spend alot of money doing it, this is the perfect box set for you.

5 out of 5 stars Acclaimed performances, but is the SACD sound much better?.......2006-01-30

The 1962 cycle of Beethoven symphonies from Karajan has been DG's standard for four decades, and every time there is a tchnological advance, the set is remastered. The latest remastering into SACD surround sound is an automatic choice for people who have converted to SACD. However, the vast majority of music lovers haven't converted, so the question is whether the new sonics, as played through 2-channle CD, are better.

They certainly are in this pairing of the seventh and Eighth, two of the finest performances in the whole cycle. gone are the wiry strings and the "crunch" at loud climaxes. Inner detail is improved, and the bass,w hile dialed back a bit, is considerably less boomy. I was so impressed that I intend to replace my whole cycle. Here we go again, ubt this time it's worth it.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific recording of the 7th and 8th.......2004-09-14

I grew up with these recordings. I wished the Karajan did not become so self-indulgent in later recordings. The tempi of both symphonies, with the exception of the second movement of the 7th, seem to be just right. The adagio of the 7th appears to be a little too quick. (I refer to Fürtwangler's and Giulini's 7th as a more reasonable representation of the adagio movement.) Sonically, the re-mastering is quite superb; there is tape hiss that is still present but this is a small price to pay for such a great performance. It is my hope that the other recordings of this re-release is as good. I look forward to listening to the other CD's.

5 out of 5 stars A fine Seventh, but the real gem is the Second.......2007-02-20

Bernstein recorded the Beethoven 7th four times to my knowledge, twice with the NY Phil., a decade later with the Vienna Phil., and finally (though not by intention) as a valedictory with the BSO that DG released after his death using FM broadcast tapes. The version here is the second New York one from 1964. It's substantially the same as his earlier one from 1958, the main difference being that the Scherzo is slower here and proceeds with more swagger, while the finale is a touch more vigorous. In either case, the performance is fine in an easy, somewhat undiscipined way. The intensity of Karajan and Carlos Kleiber aren't in evidence, nor the brio and precision of the CSO under Reiner.

Actually, the real gem here is the ebullient and totally captivating Sym. #2. It's played with large forces--LB didn't see the early Beethoven symphonies as Haydnesque--but there's lightness in Bernstein's touch, along with abundant humor. The NY Phil. plays with humor and verve--in all, a great eprformance that is one of the highlights of Bernstein's first Beethoven cycle. This is the five-star performance.

5 out of 5 stars Genius Meets Genius.......2006-10-23

After toying several times with purchasing a recording of Maestro Bernstein's final performance of the Seventh at Tanglewood for sentimental reasons, I opted for the purity of a studio recording. It proved an excellent decision. The sound is crystal clear (I am nearly deaf in one ear), and happily, unlike a previous reviewer, I have detected no technical flaws in this outstanding remastering. This is Bernstein and the NYP at its zenith.

As someone who gravitates to classical works of the last 150 years or so and who does not count Beethoven among his favorite composers, the Seventh proved absolutely spellbinding to me on both initial and subsequent hearings. The first movement is the longest in terms of both time elapsed -14- and interest sustained that I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. The allegretto moves, for my taste, at just the right pace, not plodding, with Bernstein deftly weaving the countermelody and the composer doing a superb job of shining some light into the somewhat hypnotic, introspective movement via key change and instrumentation. The presto adds still more brightness, setting the stage for the galloping allegro, where Bernstein has the NYP stab the notes and celebrate being alive. (It's been reported that Beethoven consumed huge quantities of coffee; if so, it appears to have kicked in when he was working on this final movement.) After 40 minutes, the Seventh comes to a crisp, jubilant ending, not with a drawn-out formulaic close, but with a brisk run to the finish line and a clean, final note. And throughout, Beethoven gives us not one, but several beautiful melodies to be explored and savored, never overstaying his welcome.

This is a wonderful way to remember the genius of Bernstein - not frail under a gloomy sky at Tanglewood but at the height of his powers, conducting his very own philharmonic in the city he called home.

Five-plus stars.

5 out of 5 stars New York Rocks!!.......2004-04-01

This is certainly an example of just how fine Bernstein could get his orchestra to play. The Second symphony of Beethoven is a real treat. The Slow movement solo by Stanley Drucker on clarinet is absolutely flawless and every nuance is superb. In fact, this Beethoven 2 is really on of the very best ever done. There are few orchestras in the world who can play the Beethoven D Major this well, and I doubt you could find any recent recordings that are on par with this level of excitement and committment.

The Seventh has always been a tricky piece, and my only criticism is the sound is certainly not better than Kleiber's on DG with the Vienna. What is so enjoyable is the obvious ease with which the NYP can produce such wide dynamics without any intonation flaws. Incredible playing...also check out the Mahler reissues in this series...they are played beyond reproach!

5 out of 5 stars Best Seventh Ever!.......2004-03-15

I own about a dozen recordings of this great symphony, and I've heard a dozen more. This recording is my absolute favorite. It sizzles. I can't think of a single criticism to make against it; not a single solitary minuscule quibble.

Sure, Kleiber's recording is very good; so is Klemperer's and Walter's and Monteux's, etc. But this is the one I keep coming back to. And it doesn't appeal only to the cognoscenti: Whenever I want to introduce one of my pop-music-listening friends to classical music, THIS is the recording I give them. It hardly ever fails to hook them on classical.

5 out of 5 stars Definitive.......2003-09-21

Kleiber's recording of the Seventh gets all the acolades (and it's an excellent recording, no doubt about it), but for my money nobody has ever matched Bernstein's magisterial 1964 recording with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. The tempos are absolutely perfect and the Philharmonic are on fire here. This rendition of the Seventh really is "the apotheosis of the dance" (to quote Wagner's famous characterization of it). Their recording of the Symphony No. 2 is likewise thrilling. Buy this disc now.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's First, Quite Possibly, Best, Beethoven Symphony Cycle.......2007-05-23

For those wondering why Leonard Bernstein was such an important, exciting conductor, there's no better introduction than these fine early stereo recordings he made with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Critics have celebrated these as exciting, revelatory accounts, almost as memorable as those from George Szell and The Cleveland Orchestra and Herbert von Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker, which were recorded almost at the same time as Bernstein's. The only reason why I'd give higher recommendations to Szell's and Karajan's cycles lies primarily with the acoustical qualities of the recording studios (In Karajan's case the converted Berlin church where he made most of his 1960s and 1970s recordings with the Berliner Philharmoniker was sonically the best at that time.) and the overall quality of the musicianship of their respective ensembles, which I would have to rate slightly higher than the New York Philharmonic's. The two finest recordings from Bernstein's New York Philharmonic cycle are those with of the 3rd and 5th symphonies which remain two of the most dramatic recordings of these pieces that I've heard. Overall, I think this set deserves favorable comparisons with his mid 1970s Deutsche Grammophon cycle recorded with the Wiener Philharmoniker during live performances at Vienna's Musikverein; the only exceptional differences are the slightly warmer acoustics of the orchestra and concert hall in the 1970s cycle, and Bernstein's usage of slightly quicker tempi and smaller orchestral forces. If you're looking for an alternative traditional Beethoven symphony cycle, then you won't miss by acquiring this early Bernstein cycle.

4 out of 5 stars Bernstein's early Beethoven makes an enticing bargain.......2007-02-20

I wonder if Leonard Bernstein was the first American conductor to record a complete Beethoven cycle? He must have been, and two of these performances--the Eroica and the Fifth Sym. -- were made famous as vehicles for LB's television talks in the Fities and Sixties. Millions of post-war kids learned from them and I'm one. In retrospect Bernstein's Beethoven wasn't as propulsive and exciting as memory made them. But these performances are full-boded, direct, and satisfying. Perhaps the authority of Karajan and the Berlin Phil. isn't present, but even so, Sony is offering the cycle as a tremendous bargain, all the more so if you buy it used at Amazon Marketplace. Several overtures are thrown in, along with Isaac Stern's excellent account of the Violin Concerto (conductor and soloist are in sympathy, as always, but this is one of their poorest sounding recordings, unfortunately).

LB used a big orchestra for his Beethoven, and the Columbia Records engineers caught them in a big, reverberant space. If you want to hear this music on a modest scale or with historical touches, lok elsewhere. After he decamped to Europe, Bernstein made a second Beethoven cycle with the Vienna Phil. that's leaner, faster, but somewhat lacking in the excitment of discovery that one heard the first time around.

5 out of 5 stars unforgettable!.......2006-05-09

This CD has two historic recordings of Furtwangler. These performances are in cult status. Furtwangler and his Wiener Philharmoniker performed so sensitive and Beethovenien power. In my opinion, Wilhelm Furtwangler's Beethoven readings are definitive. Actually, there are "authentic" readings with period instruments made by Harnoncourt, Norrington, Hogwood. But these Furtwangler readings (may be both in modern and authentic reading) are reference, I think. Furtwangler, of course, one of the greatest conductors of century, and these Beethoven recs. are his best.

Symphony No. 5 performed not fast, flamboyant as Karajan. But Furtwangler sound has a more deep atmosphere, it is more phsycological, impressive. Because, he didn't take a fast tempo, so he could give the full precious meanings of all Beethoven notes! The first movement is tremendous, and 2nd slow movement is a lyric singing music. The last movement is triumphant, of course.

Symphony No. 7 is marvellous too. Especially the famous 2nd Allegretto movement is may be the best performance, you can weep whn you listen it. It is really drammatic, pathetic.

The sound quality is very good mono, recorded in 1950's. Even, these are historic recs. And worth to listening.

At this price, you can not wrong with it. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Great Beethoven from Furtwangler.......2005-08-16

I have known Beethoven's 5th and 7th Symphonies since my earliest days collecting Classical LP records in 1972. My first exposure to Symphony 5 was the Decca recording by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt/Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, and for Symphony 7, Ernest Ansermet/Orchestre de la Suisse Romande. Furtwangler's recordings pre-date each of these by 10-15 years, but the sound is very good mono. Furtwangler's 5th may be the best recording this work has ever had: intense, dark, beautifully recorded. Don't expect overly fast tempos or hyped up dramatics:this is about destiny, soul searching, triumph over despair, life over death. Furtwangler's Vienna 7th, while not a favorite of many critics, still speaks to me in a special way. Tempos in I and IV are fast, and the sound is not as good as in Symphony 5 (it was recorded 3 years earlier), but there is an excitement and intensity which makes this worth hearing.

Most listeners would buy this for Symphony 5, and for about $7.00 you can't go wrong, no matter how many Beethoven Symphony recordings you have.

3 out of 5 stars Superficial And Disappointing From The Master Karajan.......2006-08-05

I am a big fan of Karajan, he's overall my favorite conductor, but just because I admire the man for many of his achievements, that feeling does not infect my objectivity and critical judgement. Here is a case in point, two symphonies from his last Beethoven cycle, the digital one from the 1980's.

There is a real element of slickness and emotional coolness about the whole affair. To be fair, the 4th symphony fairs quite well overall, the introduction to the opening movement doesn't have all that much mystery but really, how many conductors since Furtwangler even give large thought to the intricate mysteries that lie at the heart of Beethoven's symphonic output? After the intro, Karajan explodes into the allegro, very dramatic indeed and the whole movement is done with vigor and life. The adagio is a bit detached but it's nothing new from Karajan. The last two movements go by well even though I can't understand Karajan's continual insistence to drop the final movement's exposition repeat! Yes, in every cycle Karajan recorded, he dropped this rather innocuous repeat which is only 1:30 in length! Furtwangler was always wise to keep this last repeat intact. Both Karajan and Furtwangler dropped the first movement repeat and I respect their decision there, that was the fashion of the day.

Moving forward to the 7th symphony and you get your problems. This is the kind of superficial performance that Karajan's hateful critics attack him for and this time they are right! All the timings are basically the same as the earlier cycles from the 60's and 70's but this 7th from the 80's is comparatively lackluster when judged alongside the version from the 60s. Here are a few glaring examples. The allegretto opens up like slush, it is so smoothed over that you can't even hear the famous rhythm! The Penguin Guide went so far as mention this defect in their review as well. The allegretto in Karajan's hands was always lacking in emotional depth, every version he ever made was in the mold of Toscanini. I much prefer the love, depth and gravity a conductor like Furtwangler brought to this beloved symphonic movement. A recent fascinating 7th symphony by Christian Thielemann also took the Furtwangler approach of the slow tempo in the allegretto. I say to hell with the period instrument hacks and their glibness in this beautiful testament to Beethoven's art!

Onto the finale, the last disappointment here. Initially you might find the fast tempo and explosive attack very exciting, however if compared to Karajan's 60's version which is available in terrific remastered sound in the Complete Beethoven Edition Volume 1 as well as on SACD, you will notice major differences. Here on Karajan Gold, the horns are much more recessed and so is the timpani, the recording is not well defined and what you get is a big, fat juicy mess instead of the bolts of lighting that rang out in the earlier Karajan record. In that 60's account the horns leap out of the orchestra and make you smile and the timpani actually make an impact, it has some aural distinction unlike the record you're looking at here.

Overall, this digital cycle has a very intense Eroica, on the same level as the famous early 60's cycle. This digital cycle also has a massively invigorating 8th symphony. As far as the rest are concerned, Karajan has done better before, he really has.

5 out of 5 stars Karajan's great Seventh is as good as ever in digital sound.......2006-07-15

Karajan's late digital cycle of Beethoven symphonies hasn't gotten much love form critics, but in many cases his interpretations are unchanged from ealier years. That's certainly true of the Seventh, which Karajan made a specialty. His 1963 account, often consiered definitive, is duplicated in its entirety here. We get the same rhythmic vitality, a slightly faster Allegretto, and astonishing virtuosity in the sworling finale. The good news is that DG's sonics, now remastered for the Karajan Gold edition, are exceptionally good, far better than the Sixties analog sound of the earlier version.

Karajan's Fourth is just as fine. It's authoritative and yet nimble and vivacious. by the Eighties Karajan was no longer a modernist in Beethoven as he had been in the era of Furtwangler--his penchant for leaner textures and faster tempos had been adopted by dozens of othe conductors. but the Fourth remains fresh, and in the improved sound it, too, goes ahead of its Sixties predecessor.

5 out of 5 stars Moody contrast on one CD..........2004-04-12

Beethoven's symphonies just get better and better as the numbers rise. Number Three was great enough, but numbers Four and Seven have more surprises in store for listeners.

Symphony number Four is unique in that it is probably Beethoven's happiest symphony. Biographers speculate this is so because it was written during a time of relative peace and calm in Beethoven's life, around the year 1806 when Beethoven was on vacation away from some of the hustle and bustle of his life in the city (which may have provided some relief from the anguish of his deafness). The Fifth symphony was already in progress before the fourth was begun and a commission from one Count Franz Von Oppersdorf caused Beethoven to put aside the turbulent Fifth and begin on the relatively more peaceful and happy Fourth.

The Fourth has suffered neglect and unpopularity probably due to the nature of how Beethoven is conceived of as a composer. In the minds of the public he was - and mostly still is - an anguished and tortured artist (tortured by deafness, by lonliness, amongst other things the popular imagination conjured and conjures up). In light of this, Beethoven's more stormy, moody and passionate works get full press while his more delicate or sprightly tunes take back seat. The vast majority of the listening public just didn't - and don't - want to see him as content or happy; we all want a reason for genius, or for at least there to be a price to pay for exaggerated creative energy. In short, Beethoven was typecast in the same way that celebrities and artists continue to be typecast today.

That aside, the Fourth is a great work with many catchy melodies and phrases. It will have you bouncing in places and skipping in others. In short, it is a delight, and it is far less moody than his other symphonies. To say it is his happiest work will seem strange to listeners of the very beginning of the fourth, because some of his darkest passages are there: thick goopy strings seem to scrape melancholy. But then something happens soon after: the sun comes out and the gloom is forgotten about. Whether or not this was a personal statement that reflected Beethoven's vacation mood, who really knows. What is evident is that the dark passages are overcome with joy, and the symphony remains relatively optimistic in spirit throughout. Perhaps due to this, the Fourth remains Beethoven's least popular symphony. The Fifth was to steamroller over it like a Panzer.

The Seventh symphony, by great contrast, will feed the passionate Beethoven fan full up to the top of the esophagus. It is pounding and passionate, but still catchy. Timpanies boom, horns yell and strings scrape throughout. These two symphonies were probably put together in the Karajan Gold series more as a matter of convenience rather than artistic simularity. The Seventh premiered in 1813 and has remained quite popular since. Beethoven himself thought it one of his best, and Wagner followed suit (likening it to great dance music - interesting). The second movement, the Allegretto, has to be one of the great movements in Beethoven's symphonies. It begins hushed and rises until it explodes. Calls of encore consistently followed early performances of this movement. Others were less considerate and called Beethoven a madman or claimed that he must have been madly inebrieated when he composed it. Regardless, it is one of his great symphonies.

Karajan and the Berliner Philharmoniker play these pieces remarkably. The Seventh in particular is astounding. All in all this is a great packaging of two symphonies with rather divergent feelings and moods.

4 out of 5 stars you're great, Karajan!.......2003-12-02

That's the finale of the seventh I was looking for.
Save me from the Grave and Wise!!!
Thanks a lot, dear Herbert.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the definitive recording of Beethoven's 7th.......2001-03-13

As another reviewer has mentioned, this faster-than-often-heard recording of the last movement of the 7th simply keeps me on the edge of my seat. Once you've heard this recording, you'll never go back. Von Karajan was a great man, and this is probably my favorite CD of all time (although his recording of Mozart's Requiem on the same label is also in the running).
