Glorious.......2006-07-31
I have listened to a great deal of Orthodox music and I think this is by far one of the most beautiful collections I have ever heard. Actually, it is one of the most georgeous pieces of music of any kind I have heard.
Awesome... heavenly... ethereal Russian Choral Music.......2006-05-21
This Awesome, ethereal, heavenly ANCIENT ECHOES was a gift of my friend, Dick Talley last year. Seldom does my early awakening miss listening to these choral chants of the Orthodox Monastery!
If I could choose the more interesting, comforting, fasinating polyphonic chants, they would be No.3 "The Only Begotten Son" of Golovanov, No.5 "The Lord Speaketh" and No.6 "Glory be to God in the highest" both by Bortnyansky!
Only Russian Choral Treasures are equally awesome, spiritually refreshing. When I awaken every morning around 4:00, I began listening to both these recordings, before reading or praying for friends, such as, Dick and Anita Talley.
Upon becoming 75 years of age, I tend to simplify my habit of listening to Choral Music. Most fondly reviewed by Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood, "Barbara377" (Fayetteville, GA USA)
The Might of the Russian Male Choral Sound.......2005-10-03
The Russian liturgical music, especially that for the high holy days of Christmas and Easter, owns a mystery all its own. This splendid recording by the Chorovaya Akademia conducted by Alexander Sedov is a fine a sound as any produced on recording. Though few of the composers (with the exception of Tchaikovsky and Grechaninov) are well known outside Russia, the works are all beautifully composed and hauntingly performed. There is somewhat of a sameness to these religious works (little variation in tempi, expressive range, dynamics) but the overall effect is one of humble spirituality.
This is a fine example of the Russian choral music that is growing in popularity one the recorded repertoire and it is for this listener one of the best. Grady Harp, October 05
Compare These 3.......2004-04-19
There are 3 different CD's about Russian Choir "A Cappella" music which can be discussed & reveal a certain enjoyment to different people with different needs or means:
"Ikon" sung by the Holst Singers on Hyperion is the middle ground that gives a well balance & beautiful music from an English choir group. If you did not know they were English, you would think of them as Russian. Most songs are Russian classics from Sviridov, Gretchaninov, Kalinnikov, & Tchaikovsky with modern versions from Part, Gorecki, & Nystedt. The highlight is from the female sopranos which give an angelic & awl inspiring spiritual uplift that must not be missed.
"Sacred Treasures" sung by several groups including The Russian State Symphony Cappelle, The Leningrad State Academic Choir, The Bulgarian National Choir, & a few other groups on Hearts of Space give the most authentic Russian that to English ears may sound slow & uneventful. Yet to a person that knows Russian, this CD will cause the most goose bumps due to its rightful intensity with music from Rachmaninov, Bortniansky, Kedrov, Gertchaninov, Tchaikovsky, Christov, Turchaninov, & Lvovski.
"Ancient Echoes" sung by the Chorovaya Akademia on RCA Victor may give the best first impression due to its well made production that will give a serious work out to any professional stereo system, yet with further study will reveal an over dramatized style that may get in the way. Songs from the composers Sheretiev, Nikolsky, Golovanov, Strokin, Bortnyansky, Grechaninov, Riutol, Tchaikovsky, & Chesnokov.
If your into Russian "A Cappella" music, give these 3 CD's a try & decided for yourself.
Quite genuine but lacking in contemplative mellowness.......2004-01-05
The fantastic cover of this cd notwithstanding (the monk in red habit is a Catholic monk, probably a Carthusian, Orthodox monks wear a different habit), this is a cd of authentic Russian religious music for Christmas and Easter composed in the last 200 years and sung by an all-male choir: the Choravaya Akademia under the direction of Alexander Sedov.
The total length of this recording is 63:25 minutes.
Compared with other such cds available on Amazon.com like Sacred Treasures I and II, Ancient Echoes has a more vigorous and folk-song style. I do not want to sound sacrilegious or cynical in the least but many of the chants sound like Red Army songs.
So if you are looking for something virile and robust, something to bolster your resolution for moral rearmament, this is the kind of music that will delight you. If on the other hand you are looking for something tenderly contemplative, buy Sacred Treasures I or II or Rachmaninoff's Vespers by the Robert Shaw Festival Singers.

Beautiful! Beautiful!.......2007-01-26
The Powers of Heaven is just that, a slice of heaven. The voices are so beautiful and rich, I can just imagine that the angels themselves are singing! I have been searching for the Cherubic Hymn sung in the style of our litergy at Annunciation Orthodox Church in Houston. This is recorded so touchingly, and to my delight, I now have new songs from this album to add to my lists of favorites. The Powers of Heaven is powerful indeed!
Russian Orthodox Singing? Not!..........2005-10-31
Beautiful choral music devoid of true Russian soul. Westernized to a degree of being unrecognizable. It comes from the "western" school of Rusian choral art and has nothing in common with the prayerful and deeply spiritual dimension of the Orthodox faith.
The musical splendour of St Petersburg.......2005-06-22
St Petersburg is famous for the magnificance of its architecture and this CD explore that splendour in music terms. Peter the Great drove Russia into the modern world with his modernisation drive, and without this Russia may have remained in the middle ages and certainly no match against the onslaught of tyrants such as Napoleon and Hitler.
With his modernisation drive Peter the Great brought in Western composers, mainly from Italy where the latest musical fashions were being wrought at the time. Teachers of composition would likely have used examples such as Palestrina, Lassus, Gabrielli and Josquin as examples. The teachers must have been highly conservative for Vasily Titov writes 12-part counterpoint late in the 1600's when this sort of multi-part polychoral writing was going right out fashion - clearly his Italian teachers had little time for the more avant garde trends set by the likes of Monteverdi, fadish madrigalian trends being thus noticeably absent. The results are an extraordinary mixture of Russian Orthodox stylistic tendencies with the compositional principles of the Seconda Prattica, where despite the importation of Western techniques, the very Russian compositional character comes through strongly. Titov is arguably a good a composer as Russia has ever produced.
With later composers such as Bortniansky, there seems to be a greater awareness of the latest Western trends, perhaps even those of the up-and-coming Viennese group of composers such as Haydn, although Italian composers such as Durante were still highly dominant amongst conservative circles at the time. There is certainly a hint of the gallant style entering into the writing.
This is all very rewarding music - except for those who are want to walk through the magnificant architecture of St Petersburg - such as the Hermitage, and the Petershof, bemoaning the fact that Russia didn't remain in the Middle Ages. Some of the comments seen below seem almost reminiscent of those of the oppressive Council of Trent in their Papal condemnation of gloriously rich multipart contrapunctal writing. The importation of the Spirit of the Renaissance and the new Humanism had clearly ushered a new age for Russia.
The choral singing here is truly wonderful with fine tone and intonation throughout, as you would expect with Paul Hillier in charge. The recording is good - clean and clear.
This is a highly recommendable recording.
Exquisite Singing - Interesting Music.......2004-09-28
The music on this CD is a fascinating time capsule. In 1712 Peter the Great moved the Russian capital to St. Petersburg. Opening Russia to the influences of the West, he invited European artists and craftsmen, including Italian composers, to come to Russia, and sent Russian composers to study in Italy, to learn modern techiques. Thus, this 18th century music is recognizably Italian, even that written by the Russian composers like Bortniansky. And yet, the evocative Russian Orthodox texts have inspired a uniquely spiritual depth of expression. The title work, "Now the powers of heaven" by Giuseppe Sarti, is lush and beautiful, and reminded me of the Lotti "Crucifixus".
The Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir is wonderful. I don't normally enjoy music from this period, but their singing was so perfect it captivated me totally. Sopranos had a full sound but not much vibrato; intonation was flawless; expressive but still precise. This is the first recording of theirs I have heard. It won't be the last.
Russian music but heavily westernized..........2003-12-02
Lovers of Russian choir music with a deep, mystical atmosphere will be sorely disappointed by this music. Although the lyrics are Russian and Orthodox, the melodies and vocal arrangements are Italian and some of the pieces sound like a parody of Monteverdi's Vespers of the Virgin Mary.
This is explained in the booklet that comes with the cd. It has apparently a lot to do with Peter the Great's westernization drive. He had Italian composers come over from Venice to alter the traditional church music, which he apparently deemed backwards. The result is beautiful but devoid of depth, except maybe for the fourth track, a hymn to the Virgin Mary, which sounds like a litany and is quite soothing and religious in tone. The rest is for me pure profane music only intended to please the ear.

Customer Reviews:
Good music.......2004-09-08
Although I myself am not very religious, I do have an interest for Russian Chant. Endowed in mysticism, Russian chant has the ability to express both love and sorrow at the same time. The music is indeed very powerful and beautiful. Speaking as a composer as well, I must say that I am compelled to take a greater interest in incorporating some of this chant in some of my own music. I give it 4/5 stars - you cant go wrong with it.
Replying to the previous commentator... That isnt very nice. I am sure that there were many Atheists that lived in the USSR at the time who were very decent human beings. I dont think that the cruel acts of Stalin and other Soviet dictators should automatically define all Atheists as "Totilitarian Atheist Commnunist Animals". Besides Atheists aren't the only ones who committed atrocities, parallels can be drawn to Christianity as well. In the end, it is humanity that is forever at fault and not religion and disbelief.
Again, good album.
Transandental epic masterpiece!.......2002-07-23
Before the totalitarian atheistic communist animals wretched forth their unholy barbarism upon the fertile soils of Mother Russia, the Christian church blossemed forth in that great country - and survives still, in defiant triumph of good over evil!!!
Choral music is unique in that only the human voice is used, both for tonations, and for singing lyrics - no other musical instruments are used. The effect is dramatic and appeals directly to the soul.
This music comes from the rich and earthy hearts of those who have known great sorrow, and yet have hope; from those who are embroiled in epic struggle, and yet have faith; from those who have been afflicted by hatred, and yet are filled with love.
Solem homaging of all that is Holy, brought humbly, respectfully, and joyfully to earthly form - a comparatively dim but inspiring suggestion of what Heaven's choir must be like:
1 Cor 2:9
9 But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.
KJV
These masterful works are a treasure for all mankind!
Mystical Russian Soundscapes?.......2000-01-19
An odd title if you're not buying it for meditation purposes. Anyway, this CD covers an expansive amount of reportoire. The rarely heard Madrigal Ensemble of Moscow is represented by the first 8 tracks, which consist of extremely rare music you probably won't find in too many other places. Finally the listener is suddenly transported from early Russian unison chant (No. 11) to a full Bortniansky concerto (No. 12). The rest of the selections are all polyphonic, although I'd argue that they are not "Russia's finest choirs." I'd recommend this CD up to track 12.
If you love Russian Orthodox music/Sacred Musicýbuy this CD!.......1999-10-28
What a "secret gem" of a CD!
Hauntingly beautiful; deep with feeling, this music is truly of Heaven. A phenomenal *meditation tool* or simply music to *deeply relax* and just listen to. Also, for the uninitiated, this CD is a valid introduction to both Orthodox Christian Sacred Music, and Orthodox Russian Spirituality in particular. It's well worth noting that music such as this can quite literally change your life -- in surprisingly profound, and meaningful ways; I know many whom it has.

Opus 111's first disc of medieval Russian plainchant and polyphony surveys the various styles that Anatoly Grindenko and his choir explore in depth on subsequent recordings. There are examples of znamenny chant (the Russian equivalent of Gregorian plainsong, more recognizably melodic than the Western equivalent) as well as the extraordinary indigenous polyphony that developed in 17th-century Russia. The largely homophonic strochny and melismatic demestvenny styles lack any concept of Western-style consonance and dissonance (chords are more likely to be built on seconds than thirds); partesny ("part-singing") chants have a simple chordal style very like Western fauxbordon. The disc ends with an 18th-century Tebe Bozhe khvalim (Te Deum) by Bortniansky full of the newly dominant Western influence--in this context, it sounds very gaudy (as Grindenko probably intended). --Matthew Westphal
