Good selection of music, poorly performed and badly arranged. Good album for a tag sale. Same comment applies for Volume I.
Great music listein to while you read in bed.......2005-08-21

Almost perfect.......2006-07-28
A brilliant album, especially track number 1,6,7. I gave it it 4 stars because of the last two tracks of Schoenberg which I did not like. They were to "abstract", not melodious at all. I realize this is subjective, maybe you will love it!
A fabulous rapport!.......2006-02-21
Yehudi Menuhin and Glenn Gould made an efective team, in spite of their well differenced approach respect many musical considerations.
Menuhin was the romantic spirit, Gould the iconoclast msucian; but something magic happened when both of them shook hands and exchanged ideas and opinions. It was a secret but visible reciprocal admiration that allowed them to work out to perfection levels.
Menuhin 's gentle warmth was an overwhelming player and Gould gave us the best of his talent in an historiacl album that deserves to be part of your privileged collection.
A must-buy CD!
A Great Disc..........2005-01-31
Gould and Menuhin really do play well together: the Bach and the Beethoven are great; the Schoenberg fanstastic! Gould literally taught Menuhin during a day's rehearsal how to play the Schoenberg--into whose works he [Gould] had a special insight. After a night of "sleeping on it," the following day Menuhin really played the piece with love and understanding.
A very good combination.......2002-08-11
Gould and Menuhin are a great combination! I especially like the Bach Sonata. I love how Menuhin does a trill on the violin. Glenn Gould does very well being in a duet. This is my first Glenn Gould CD which is not for solo piano. The Schoenberg Phantasy on this CD is an exceptional work of genius. Do not be afraid of the Schoenberg composition. The cheerful Beethoven violin sonata is played very elegantly when it needs to be and heavy and strong at the right time. The sound on this is great! (The recording does not have any added noises) A wonderful CD for anyone!
Two of the century's greatest instrumentalists combine........1998-09-24
It would be hard to believe that there is music out there that is capable of containing the enormous artistic gifts of Gould and Menuhin. The Bach and the Schoenberg (which Menuhin only agreed to play because of his reverence for Gould) are examples of such music. The recording of these two works is spellbinding, particularly the Bach which is very forward and driven. The Beethoven is by comparison a bit of a let-down though it certainly remains worth hearing. It is a pity that these two great figures were not more frequent collaborators.

Sung by an Angel........2003-06-13
Food for the soul,no matter how corny.
As a 20-something,non-religous person is it gratifying to have this to fall back on when faced with everyday life and all the hazards it brings.
What did the singers those days have that's so visibly absent from today's?
Definitly not better technique or better recording enviroments.
Could it be be that they were more well-rounded artistically, and that they had the space and TIME to do what they passionately believed in?
Were they allowed to delve a bit deeper than the ones today?
Coming back to the CD.
Some people slag de los Angeles off as a soprano that should'nt have happened. But how could it not when you hear the'simpatico'and womanliness in that voice.
Her German and English isn't idiomatic, but give me her spontanous chirping on the opening lines of Handel's'So shall the lute and harp awake'anyday, compared to the bland offerings today!
Pure Delight.......1999-09-05
"...for perfect, really grand tradition, exquisite, almost divine singing, go to Victoria de Los Angeles in 'Baroque and Religious Arias,'" said Robert Levine in the January 1997 issue of Classical Pulse. And I cannot agree more. After listening to her Mozart, you wonder why her Mozart performances have been so under-represented on discs. Testament has done a tremendous job in bringing this extraordinary artist's buried treasures from the EMI archive. And one looks forward to more. Any documentation of her Elsa, or Donna Anna -- roles she is known to have performed?

Menuhin: an Artist like no other!.......2006-08-23
This is a marvelous recording, for it captures the greatness that was Menuhin. It is mono, yet for those of us who actually listen to the performance not the sound discrepancies, this is a recording not to be missed. This recording introduced me to the sound of Menuhin, and his Bach interpretation is truly something beautiful, at once full of pathos and the structural clarity so needed in playing Bach. I do not share the above review that the Chaconne is uninspired, and while it may be romantically realized this does not detract but merely adds to its uniqueness. Our century is all about period instruments and fidelity to the score or the manner of the time, this is something relatively new in the history of music performance and should BY NO MEANS BE CONSIDERED DOGMA. That being said I praise the greatness of Bach (that Double Concerto is truly something beautiful and ethereal) and the mighty talent of Menuhin, and thank God for the chance to hear them both.
Those of us who are not artists should watch our tongues. Who are you, who does not create or invent, to pass judgement on those who are above us all in the realm of Artistic construction?
Menuhin: romanticism, refinement, passion and pride!.......2005-12-22
Yehudi Menuhin has been the violinist with major sense of the refined playing. Somehow he represented the Renaissance 's artist. His serene temperament and sensitivity allowed him to play under the composer 's intentions and director as any other artist in the music. That excel virtue by itself is what it proves his fabulous readings of Bela Bartok under Dorati or his aristocratic Brahms under Wilhelm Fürtwangler, for instance. Maybe his major achievements be found out in the chamber music or intimate violin works such as The Mozart 's Violin Concertos or his memorable performances as director of the Bath 's Festival' s Orchestra.
The sumptuous, elegant and convincing phrasing of Yehudi Menuhin reached in this recording a particular apex. The artist is in top musical shape; Bach 's First and Second Violin Concertos are played under his teacher and close friend Georges Enesco; the First Concerto is played with admirable sense of noblesse. The Second one is widely known and the delicate performance is hued by notable details of modulation, the velvet tune and the accurate approach make of this recording a fundamental achievement in the career of this master.
Additionally we have Bach 's Double Concerto played by Enesco and Menuhin; a recording that by itself justifies the acquisition of this album.
The only serious problem resides in his Chaconne `s performance. Extremely stylized, played with excessive romantic approach and without ambition.
The absolute peak of his performances may be admired during his multiple appearances in Prades Festival, and once again the figure of Pau Casals as this untiring musical motivational spark plug that seemed to elevate the rank of performance of every one of his partners; this fact can be visibly observed since 1959 until the middle sixties.
An album of transcendent musical relevance for the actual generations and the musical newcomers of the present and the future.
Fantastic in all ways!.......2004-12-11
These are totally intense and firey peformances with Master and Disciple. Inspired interpretations and the rapt communion bewteen the artists is amazing.
The mono sound is excellent.
Indispensible for anyone's Bach collection!
Beautiful music, poor sound quality.......2001-12-31
There is no doubt that Menuhin is a virtuoso. However, the recording quality of this work is very poor by today's standards. If you are specifically interested in Bach or Menuhin, I would recomend this recording; if clarity of sound interests you, one should look elsewhere.

These were all recorded when Menuhin was between ages 15-19. The Bach Double was done at age 15 with his teacher, the great Georges Enescu. It will take you about three minutes to get past the 1930s recording quality to appreciate the musicianship here. This one, though, is not for those who like "period recordings" -- this one is unabashedly modern, in a 1930s kind of way. Still, appreciate it for what it is, rather than for what it is not.

Well..........2004-12-11
Despite all the praise young Menuhin gets on these recordings, I will save my praise for someone else's greater recordings...George Enescu.
These renditions are cold, dry and mechanical when comparing them to his teacher's versions.
Menuhin simply doesn't have a clue in the understanding of these pieces. He just plays the notes beautifully, but with no spirit or deep meaning behind them.
I'm sorry, but I do really admire Mehuhin..he was one of the most gifted of musicians we have ever had, but these recordings do not do these pieces justice they should. I would rather recommend Menuhin's later Stereo versions on EMI, as they are more profound and at that time Menuhin was fully mature as an artist.
...but still, Menuhin own teacher was and still is the Master of the Sonatas and Partitas. Listening to Enescu's recordings leave a permanent impact on your soul! Get them instead and be ready to go through a life altering experience!
Very Moving and Powerful.......2004-09-15
It is worth repeating once again that this set of CDs contains the VERY FIRST complete, recorded performance of the monumental solo violin pieces by Johann Sebastian Bach. That fact alone would be enough to secure them a hallowed place in the history of recorded music. However, the performance of the 18-year-old Yehudi Menuhin are nothing short of astonishing, especially when one takes into account the age of these recordings. Menuhin is fearless and intrepid, seemingly aware of the significant place his rendering would take. He is aggressive and very heavy, with tempi tending to be slow compared to most contemporary recordings of the solos. While Menuhin's intonation suffers greatly in several areas (occasionally due to the recording process itself, no doubt), this rendering is monumental in its historical significance, emotive power, and sheer intrepidity. The violin and performer plunge ahead with gusto and chutzpah that still stuns listeners today. Menuhin is always confident (even when his intonation is less than perfect) and there is a feeling of great strength and, perhaps monumental struggle between performer, instrument, and music (especially in the Chaconne). This adds a great feeling of dramatic intensity to the recording, which is, perhaps, just the ticket with these the most incredible pieces in the solo string reportoire. Recording-wise, despite all our modern technology can offer, sound quality is still very poor. Bumps, clicks, and hisses can be heard throughout the two CDs, and the violin is recorded EXTREMELY close (you can see just HOW close in the liner notes). However, Menuhin is simply incredible, with a style all his own. While I can't say, as some have here, that this is how Bach would have heard these pieces (after all, that's the whole premise behind the so-called Historically Informed Performance trend, which Menuhin is obviously NOT a part of), I will say that Menuhin outbeats most of the modern offerings in sheer personality and drama. A must have for any Bach enthusiast!
Truly Moving.......2002-05-31
Since I've purchased this CD, about two months ago, I've listened to it almost every day, especially CD2 which contains the partita No. 2 in d... which to me, is one of the most powerful pieces of music in any genre. Each time I hear Menuhin's interpretation, I discover something new, and I am moved all over again.
I won't feign any authority on Bach, but I will say this: for the layperson, for the admirer of the violin, and for the musician, this is a must have CD.
incomparable!.......2000-08-28
In a word, this is the finest recording of the Sonatas and Partitas extant. The recorded sound is dismal having been taken from older sources, miserable, in fact. That misfortune noted, the intelligence of this remarkable musician obliterates every distraction; intelligence like glass, so clear and revealing is it at all times, so native, so fervently humble and thus naturally devout. I don't believe there has been, at least in the modern age, another musician of such fecund gifts as Yehudi Menuhin. What an astonishing crystalisation of vast plateaus of understanding in this man! He is a mountain, and his Bach is a natural force capable of saving the world. This is not the only recording of this Bach that I listen to. There are days when all I want is Oscar Shumsky- a fountain of beautiful Bach art at every turn, so full and final. The other contender is of course Milstein, wise architect with all the clear warmth. But in the end, Menuhin pushes the world into his Bach, not the other way round. I believe it is his most remarkable musical achievment, and there have been many. If you want to hear the Sonatas, and perhaps especially the Partitas, from the vantage of Sebastian Bach, and if you have a need to understand what is art, get this recording.
One of the finest of all Bach recordings.......2000-04-25
This is one of the finest recordings of Bach's violin music. It used to be a commonplace that this was THE recording, and while it's debatable that any single recording can have that elevated status, there's no question that Menuhin was one of the supreme Bach interpreters. "Authentic" performance folks may sniff, but Menuhin had a lyrical and technical control of this material that cannot be matched. This is really a wonderful recording.

Customer Reviews:
Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06
The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.
As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.
However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.
But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.
My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.
Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

Most neglected Dichterliebe by Fischer-Dieskau.......2001-04-06
All lovers of Lieder seem to have a certain passion and veneration for Fischer-Dieskau's interpretation of Schumann's Dichterliebe. It is appearant that this singer's understanding of the music, his vocal capacity, his beautiful phrasing, clear diction, and his general (outstanding) musicianship enable him to communicate these Lieder in a way nobody else has done before (save maybe Hotter) or since.
In this live-recording he is supported by no other than Vladimir Horowitz! And the inspiration between these two artists works wonders. Horowitz' playing in crucial moments of the cycle fx "Ich Grolle Nicht" adds a spiritual dimension to the interpretation that you do not get from Moore, Brendel or Demus. We are dealing with the best interpretation of this cycle ever conveyed to disc.
So many years in the catalogue (22years?) - why is it overlooked? Because it is a part of Live Concert from Carnegie Hall and on two discs. The rest of the program is much less interesting - though other artists contributing include Bernstein, Stern and Menuhin - and it is not apparent at all from the cover what treasure is enclosed. Sony, please get some sense and re-arrange this Dichterliebe on a single disc, a nice photo of Horowitz and Fischer-Dieskau on the cover and you will have a best-seller of a CD.

BACH FROM BATH.......2004-03-13
These 1959 performances well deserve to survive into the cd era. They were among my earliest acquisitions in a lifetime of record collecting, and I am not sure that to this day I have heard a more sympathetic or beautiful set of renderings. The Brandenburgs are all in major keys, and they show us Bach at his most serene and least formidable. Menuhin and his Bath Festival group do not use exactly `period' instruments as we would understand the term these days, but the continuo, including the big keyboard solo part in # 5, is naturally done on the harpsichord, there are recorders not transverse flutes in # 4, and Menuhin uses a `kit' or `piccolo' violin, tuned a third higher than the normal instrument, in #1. Menuhin also takes the first viola part in # 6, which is for the lower strings only, and if I think I have one favourite movement out of the whole set it would be the first movement of # 6 as done here. For once it is not taken too fast, and the sublime march of its polyphony combined with the lovely instrumental tone have saved me from being tempted to think, as surprisingly many seem to, that this concerto is in any way weaker than the others.
The other high spot for me is Malcolm's harpsichord solo in # 5, particularly the first movement, and more particularly the cadenza. Malcolm's style is not to everyone's taste, but I simply can't get enough of him. The sticking-point for those who are less enthusiastic tends to be his frequent and rapid changes of registration, felt in some quarters to be meretricious. He is at it here as usual, but the well-judged balance of his instrument against the rest of the group and his superb rhythmic flexibility and subtlety, to say nothing of his imperious technique, should have something to say to everyone whatever they may feel about his registration. I mention these instances as personal favourites. The quality of everything and everybody here is consistently high. Tempi for me are unexceptionable throughout, and while the recorded quality is a little reticent by today's standards it is very clear and faithful. The problem posed by the missing middle movement of # 3 is solved here by taking an arrangement by Britten of the slow movement from one of Bach's trio sonatas, and it is as good a solution as I am familiar with.
