The cynic may question just how many Beach Boys greatest hits albums are enough. Everyone else, however, will appreciate what makes Sounds of Summer unique. This is the first single-disc collection to feature such a large cross section of hits from the group's entire career, spanning 1962's "Surfin' Safari" through 1988's "Kokomo." All 30 tracks, spanning several label changes, were Billboard Top 40 hits and are probably now as identifiable as the national anthem to anyone with radio or TV access. The fact that the tracks aren't in chronological order helps make for a fresh listening experience, as does the crisp digital sound. And yet these songs--even those that are more than four decades old--always sound strangely fresh and will likely remain so as long as there are beaches, young people, and that symbolic season of freedom and dreams. Which is to say that the title here passes the "truth in advertising" test. Perfect for those casual fans not yet ready to spring for the individual albums, Sounds of Summer is in many ways a better representation of this legendary band's art than Elvis' 30 No. 1 Hits and The Beatles 1 were of the King and the Fab Four. --Bill Holdship

5 out of 5 stars Summer music is here --- again!.......2007-06-14

These are summer classics and to hear them again is a such a joy! It brings you back to the 60's (for those of us who remember the 60's). I bet the young people of today would get a kick out of listening to a pristine version of Surfin' USA, I Get Around, and some of the other classics.

Don't Worry, Baby is a personal favorite but it's the mono version. However, listening to it on a nice set of speakers makes it sound like it's in stereo. I would have liked "Warmth of the Sun" included in this collection but hey, 30 of the best Beach Boys songs on one CD, I'm not complaining!

5 out of 5 stars The perfect Beach Boys collection for casual fans.......2007-06-14

Casual fans will find this to be the ultimate collection of the Beach Boys music as it contains all of the band's top 40 hits. 30 classic tunes from 1962 all the way to 1988 are here on a single CD with top-notch sound quality, rare photos of the band, and a nice essay inside the CD booklet. All of the early surf classics that everyone knows are presented along with lesser-known later hits that are just as worthy such as "I can hear music", "Do it Again", "Wild Honey", and "Getcha Back".

However, since this CD contains only the band's "top 40 singles", serious fans will find this collection a little less appealing since some of the Beach Boys' best music {including many good recordings after 1966} never made the top 40. Several of these songs such as "Let him run wild", "Catch a Wave", "Warmth of the Sun", and "Girls on the Beach" are not included in this otherwise excellent collection. Much of this worthy lesser-known material has just been reissued on the new highly recommended compilation "The Warmth of the Sun".

This is only a minor issue of course since "Sounds of Summer" is surely one of the most comprehensive greatest hits collections ever released by any band. ALL of the Beach Boys hit singles are here on one disc, which makes this an essential CD for every Beach Boys fan.

5 out of 5 stars Must have.......2007-06-13

If you're not one that already owns every Beach Boy record, this is one that you'll want to pick up. With 30 tracks it's a great survey of the Beach Boys from way back then up until some of there more recent stuff. If you're not familiar with the Beach Boys, you'll probably be amazed at the number of tracks on this CD that you've heard before and are familiar with, but didn't quite make the connection that all that good stuff came from the Beach Boys.

5 out of 5 stars Great Seller.......2007-06-12

Service was excellent and product in excellent condition. Would love to do business with seller again.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sounds!.......2007-06-09

For those of us who remember crusing down the highway with the radio blasting, you can't beat this CD. You just have to sing along. It's a reminder of the times when music was exciting and fun. It's simply great music.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Introduction to Italian Opera.......2005-05-01

The artists on this CD succeed in their goal to create a CD that displays great Italian opera. Carlo del Monte and Victoria de los Angeles open the disc with the Brindisi from La Traviata. Victoria de los Angeles is not the best Violetta, but she does the job, along with her parner Carlo del Monte, an underappreciated tenor. Victoria de los Angeles also appears on the CD in "Un bel di vedremo" from Madama Butterfly, a role she was well known for. Swedish tenor Nicolai Gedda appears on the disc twice. His first appearence is a superb rendition of "La donna e mobile" from Rigoletto. His final performance on this disc is in the heroric aria "Celeste Aida", a performance in a role that was not in his voice range. Anna Moffo is the star on this CD, appearing three times in three very different roles. First is her beautiful "Una voce poco fa", normally a role that calls for a mezzo-soprano. Her second is "Voi che sapete" from Le Nozze di Figaro, another mezzo-soprano role. Her final appearence is her best, "The Mad Scene" from Lucia di Lammermoor. Underrated tenor Giuseppe Campora performs "Che gelida manina" with a great tenor voice. Soprano Reri Girst is excellent in her performance of "Caro nome" from Rigoletto. One of my favorite baritones appears on this CD. Robert Merrill is a perfect Count di Luna, and it is evident in his rendition of "Il balen del suo sorriso". Another baritone appears on this CD: mario Sereni. He is not a world famous baritone, but he should have been. Overall, this is an excellent introduction to the world of Italian opera.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best!.......2003-01-11

The performers, the selections, the quality... almost divine!

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous bargain for anyone.......2002-11-24

I would recommend this CD to anyone, from opera novice to experienced listener...

These are older recordings -- I would guess mostly from the 1960's. The recording quality is exceptional for the day and, while not the equivalent of modern engineering, is sufficient to allow sheer physical pleasure from the music and an immediate appreciation of the vocal qualities of the artists. The sound quality is the only mild drawback...

The performances are magnificent! The voices are almost entirely lighter and more agile than the great voices of the 80's and 90's. In fact, the ear of the editor is apparent in his preference for lighter and more agile voices.

For example, there is a beautiful rendition of "Che Gelida Manina" from someone I had never heard before, Guiseppe Campora. He does not have the weight or volume of Pavarotti or Domingo, but has more elegance and a pure, charming tone. A connoisseur performance, but nevertheless a true operatic rendition by a tenor who can hit the high C with authority -- as good for a newcomer to opera who wants to hear the real thing, as for an opera lover who would like to hear something a bit different.

Some of the artists were among the most famous singers of their day: Moffo, de los Angeles, Gedda.

Anna Moffo, one of the greatest sopranos of her day (and all time), is in magnificent voice in famous blockbusters from Rossini's Barber of Seville, Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, and the Mad Scene from Lucia di Lammermoor.

De Los Angeles is at her best in "Libiamo" from La Traviata, but the recording quality (the one inadequately engineered track on the CD) and her lack of oomph make for a second-rate version of "Un bel di".

In keeping with the light and lyrical orientation of the selections, Moffo -- a famous Gilda and hardly a dramatic voice -- is bypassed for the even lighter, sweeter and more agile colatura Reri Grist (while she still had her voice), in a lovely "Caro Nome".

Another nice selection is Mario Sereni performing "Di provenza, il mar". Both this and "Libiamo" are taken from one of my favorite recordings of Traviata -- also a great chance to hear Serafin at the helm of the Rome Opera House orchestra. (The 2-CD version of this is still available from EMI, I think.) Newcomers will love this pretty tune, and Sereni's archtypal Verdi baritone is good, although hardly the best ever.

Franco Corelli has never been a favorite of mine, but he sounds the best I've ever heard him in his rendition of "Cielo et mar".

Anyway, I didn't intend to list every cut. Whether you are an opera lover who would like to hear some of opera's most famous arias performed in a new light, or an opera lover who would like to hear great performances at a cut-rate price, this CD gets my unqualified approval.

4 out of 5 stars Great songs for a low price........2001-08-16

Ranging from selections of La Traviata, Il Trovatore and other popular Italian operas, this is a great cd for under four bucks. The singers may not be well recognized, but they do possess powerful voices.

2 out of 5 stars Not a good choice........2001-02-22

To the contrary of one of the other ratings, I think if you are new to opera, this is NOT the CD I would recommend as an introduction. While it DOES have many of the very well known, it is, in my opinion, very poor quality, done by people with hardly any feeling for the music. They are good singers, but that's all they are doing. Hearing someone sing words is much different than hearing someone accomplished sing the soul of the story. All in all, a very boring, poorly done CD. I guess you get what you pay for though. I just recived mine yesterday, and will probably return it. If you are new to opera, I would suggest Pavarotti. The 2 star rating is because the orchistra was good.

Just a one-disc sampling of Bacharach's definitive three-CD box The Look of Love, this collection nonetheless captures some of the most essential of his writing collaborations with lyricist Hal David. Among them are a half-dozen of the greatest singles the two conjured for Dionne Warwick in the '60s; from the sorrowful "Anyone Who Had a Heart" to the bittersweet "Do You Know the Way to San Jose" and the savvy "I'll Never Fall in Love Again," they're among the best examples of postwar pop. The A-1 quality only flags on the final three lugubrious tracks. The Very Best is a mostly appealing selection, but it's hard not to feel that the title should instead appear on a full platter of Warwick classics. --Rickey Wright

Wonderful CD,every song is good, most are very good, included are great artists he worked with over the years that add to the enjoyment of this music. I would recommend it to anyone who especially enjoys the music of the 60s and 70s.

5 out of 5 stars "Best"? --- Yes!!.......2006-08-17

What a wonderful collection from one of America's true originals.. Mr. Burt Bacharach. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Mr. Bacharach's work shines as much today as when it first came out. My favorite selection is the simple and heart-breaking "Anyone Who Had A Heart" performed by the amazing Dionne Warwick. No other song can communicate heartbreak and yearning like this gem. I agree with another reviewer that a song by The Carpenters would have been nice on this collection...but no matter. These songs still stand as classics. Enjoy!

I think that this music is light, enjoyable , and a source of great pleasure. However I disagree with all the reviewers who say things like Bacharach- David are the best composers of the latter half of the twentieth century. I think the earlier greats Kern, the Gershwins, Cole Porter, Rodgers- Hart, Hammerstein, are simply much above the Bacharach- DAvid team in the quality of what they do. I also think that the Beatles and Dylan just have a dimension of depth that this team does not.
This however does not mean that their music is not a tremendous source of pleasure, especially for young people who truly like to move. I by the way think like most people that their music is best expressed in the renditions of Dionne Warwick. There are also songs of theirs that I dislike as too cutesy. One such song is 'What's New Pussycat?'
Aside from Dionne Warwick's song one piece here I think is outstanding is the Shirelles, 'Baby it's you'.

I can't believe the CD was available. It arrived quickly and in great shape.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding harmonies make this one an absolute joy to listen to.......2005-12-23

While most of the acts from the so-called "British Invasion" enjoyed success on both sides of the "pond", to the best of my knowledge Chad and Jeremy never even appeared on the charts in England. Seems very strange to me because here in America Chad and Jeremy made quite a splash in the years 1964 to 1966. As another reviewer has duly noted Chad and Jeremy produced several
hit records with "harmonies to die for".
"The Very Best of Chad and Jeremy" is yet another superb offering from the Varese Sarabande label. This beautifully remastered disc features all of their familiar hits from their stint at World Artists records as well as some of the best loved tracks from their days at Columbia. Looking for the hits? You will find them all here including "A Summer Song", "Willow Weep For Me" and "Yesterday's Gone". While these tunes are great I am partial to some of the duo's lesser known hits including their rendition of the Lennon-McCartney tune "From A Window", "What Do You Want With Me" and my all-time favorite Chad and Jeremy tune "If I Loved You" from the Rogers and Hammerstein musical "Carousel". I have never heard a better version of that tune! In 1966 Chad and Jeremy moved on to Columbia records with some very ambitious plans. They made a couple of critically acclaimed LP's which for some inexplicable reason never quite caught on with the record buying public. "The Very Best of Chad and Jeremy" offers the 3 singles released from these albums including "Distant Shores", "I Don't Want To Lose You Baby" and the beautiful "Before and After". Talk about great harmony!!! I would also recommend to you a couple of other gems including "The Truth Often Hurts The Heart" and "September In The Rain".
As usual Varese Sarabande has included a thoughtfully done 8 page booklet highlighting the career of Chad and Jeremy. Fans of 1960's pop music will certainly enjoy this one. Chad and Jeremy briefly reunited in the late 1980's to record a new LP. I actually owned a 45 from that album. Time had not diminished the great harmonies one bit. Chad and Jeremy reunited for a PBS special in 2004. Since that time that have made occasional appearances and there are even plans in the works for a new album. Chad and Jeremy are often overlooked and in my mind they are perhaps the most underated act of their day. Check out the "Very Best of Chad and Jeremy" and I bet you will agree. Highly recommended!!!

5 out of 5 stars Chad and Jeremy still rock!!.......2005-04-17

I shall admit, looking at the pictures of them in that period is a shocker....they were so YOUNG!! As a wee lassie adoring the fav duo, they seemed so handsome and mature! It's great to see pre-teen idols, still come through on the talent all these years later, though maybe to a slight lesser degree to contemporary artists Peter and Gordon. It's to be noted that Peter Asher was brother to Jane Asher, McCartney's girlfriend at the time, so he wrote with John Lennon several songs for the duo. That gave them a leg up in 'polish' of the songs, as Chad & Jeremy tended to go with a lot of original material. What set Chad and Jeremy apart and made them special, was their perfect blend of voices that create such beautiful harmony.

The album has most of their biggest hits - lacking When I Was Seventeen. They used soft instruments, such as harpsichord, and 12 string guitars rather than electric rock - counter to the British Invasion sounds. It's also to be noted Chad Stuart co-wrote many of their hits, with even Jeremy Clyde writing a bit, too.

The album holds up well, is still great easy listening. The only flaw is ones of omission, not including all the hits.

5 out of 5 stars Harmonies to die for, with plenty of emotion.......2002-10-31

Ch & J were one of two nearly lookalike duos from the early part of the 60's British invasion (the other was Peter and Gordon). Actually, Chad and Jeremy were more like 'immigrants' than 'invaders', since all their considerable chart success came stateside rather than back across the pond. They had absolutely no hits in their native land.

In contrast to Peter and Gordon, Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde (which is how they were dubbed on their earliest American singles) at times had a bit of a folkie edge to their sound. Their three neo-folk/pop tunes ["Yesterday's Gone", "What Do You Want With Me?" and Lennon/McCartney's "From a Window"] are marvelous, bouncy little genre pieces, which hearkened back to an earlier #1 chartbuster by the Rooftop Singers, the song "Walk Right In". The song "What Do You Want with Me" was one of the very first to have its mix flavored using a harpsichord instead of the usual acoustic/electric guitar (or piano) for the rhythm parts.

Then again, the duo was most well known for a brace of beautifully arranged (usually backed by a full stringed orchestra), beautifully sung and harmonized new ballads ("A Summer Song", "Distant Shores", Before and After", "I Don't Wanna Lose You, Baby"). Their recordings of a few old standards (e.g. "Willow Weep for Me" and "If I Loved You"), just as well done, were, nevertheless, much less interesting. The songwriters for the newer material, quite frankly, outdid the older writers in their ability to showcase the duo's considerable vocal talents. This is with the exception of one gorgeous, very moving old show tune, "I Have Dreamed", which unfortunately was left out of this compilation. This omission is the only flaw in an otherwise great production.

4 out of 5 stars Smoothie rock from the U.K........2001-08-11

This compilation gathers up most of the charted singles of the British soft rock/folk duo of Chad Stuart and Jeremy Clyde. This pair's music came across the pond with the British invasion in the mid-60s but had a distinctively softer sound than that of most of their peers. Their signature song, "A Summer Song" can bring a twinge to the heart better than just about any other lost summer romance song. These guys were also competent doing standards such as "If I Loved You" that became hits. One of their most sucessful, if not chart-wise, efforts in this vein is the soothing "September In The Rain". While this collection contains most of their charted tunes, it emphasizes their earlier work at World Artists and omits a few of their later lesser-charting Columbia sides. Sound quality is excellent with several of the tracks having been remixed from session tapes (although this work was done in the early 90's probably with the intention of including them in an earlier, aborted product). All tracks except "Yesterday's Gone" appear in true stereo. An eight-page booklet provides a musical history of the duo along with pics and production credits. There are a number of Chad and Jeremy compilations in the market, many of which are of marginal or poor quality. This piece is a first-rate effort that does justice to this atypical British invasion act.

5 out of 5 stars Great Intro to Operas.......2006-10-16

THE WORLD"S VERY BEST OPERA FOR KIDS is a collection of fourteen of the best loved arias in the world. The whole family will enjoy this CD, which is a unique version of these famous arias in that these are all sung in English so your child (and you) can appreciate and imagine the story that it illustrates. It is a wonderful introduction to opera and will have the whole family humming the memorable melodies, which are sung by some of the best of famous voices. You will be inspired to read the storylines of the operas to your children for a wonderful educational and delightful family hour. The CD includes an insert with the words so you can sing along

5 out of 5 stars A Sampler of Greatest Hits and Karaoke, Too.......2006-04-05

It really doesn't get much better than this CD. The primary benefit of the music is that it is a terrific selection of funny and touching arias from the classical genre. I am an opera lover and bought this for myself to memorize the words in English, as prompts when I listen to the pieces untranslated. I started listening to the CD while I was driving, and within a week had bought about a dozen CDs to distribute to family members and friends, with kids (and without). Everyone loves it. And at the end of the CD are several tracks of just the music, so you can sing along, which is a hoot. Your friends and colleagues, who hear you barking along to beats, will think you have taken leave of your senses. The lyrics (in English) are in the liner notes. I would suggest not reading the liner notes while driving.

Second CD benefit. The time you spend listening to this will be the equivalent of an afternoon at the beach or a walk in the mountains. The calming factor is amazing.

4 out of 5 stars World's Very Best Opera for Kids... in English.......2006-01-30

I listen to this with my 3 year old and we both enjoy it. I am not an operatic expert and to my lay ears the performances here sound great, and my daughter likes hearing the words to some of her favorite music ("Play the Torreadores again Mommy!") Its a nice break from some more traditional kids songs that we listen to.

5 out of 5 stars Great for adults too!.......2005-08-15

I never had an interest in opera until I made a trip to Italy and dined in an opera cafe. I appreciate it even more thanks to this CD. Now that I can hear the lyrics in english and read a synopsis of the story, I appreciate and enjoy opera even more.

5 out of 5 stars impressed.......2005-08-03

We loved the music but it was a shock to have to pay almost the same price again for the CD when we collected it from the post office due to tax added on entry to Sweden - we would have liked to be warned about that.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Good compilation- of bits and pieces.......2007-07-02

I was excited to see such a great collection of classics, but I was really disappointed to listen and discover that many tracks are shortened dramatically. A fraction of Rhapsody in Blue- a ridiculously short fragment of Bethoveen Ninth Symphony- "Ode to Joy" a tiny part of the first movement of Rachmoninov's Piano Concerto no.3.

I'd rather have fewer tracks and the complete movements.

4 out of 5 stars Good and inexpensive collection.......2007-03-17

EMI's Best Classics 100 provides six CDs with seven hours of selected classical music. The cover does a poor job of portraying who does the selecting and who performs the piece -- information inside however does detail the symphonies being recorded. Recordings from the Polish Chamber, Berlin Symphonies, Royal Philharmonic etc are mentioned. The recording quality is good and the price is low, representing a good purchase for a general collection.

5 out of 5 stars Genius Like No One Else.......2007-01-05

One of the most brilliant and iconoclastic bands in all of rock, "Love" (aka, "Arthur Lee and Love") has a unique sound that defies categorization. Web encyclopedia "Wikipedia" lists them in genres rock and roll," folk-rock." Psychedelic rock," and Psych-Folk," all labels which are essentially accurate, but none of which, of course, encapsulates their sound and attitude. They're a paradoxical group, based in L.A. but with San Francisco sensibilities, remarkably angry but incredibly tender, destined for fortune but ending with fame (although within a relatively small circle).

Still, one is tempted to find some antecedents to their meandering mixture of punk, balladry, beach music, jazz, and the hodgepodge of styles and sounds that became known as "psychedelia." A comparison with other groups yields a wine-tasting compendium of notes: Pre-dating them, I hear the loose, raucous, playful sound of the Kingsmen's 1965 recording of "Louie, Louie," the romantic lyricism, precious posturing, and baroque textures of Left Banke's "Pretty Ballerina (1966)," the Stones' 1967 "Something Happened to Me Yesterday" and "Dandelion," Donovan, and the mid-1960`s politics and experimentation of the Yardbirds. Contemporary sounds include the Stones (who apparently lifted some of the lyrics to "She Comes in Colors"), the Kinks, with their own fresh musical synthesis (Ray Davies would later produce one of Love's albums), the very electric guitar solos recalling Muddy Waters and Jimi Hendrix, and the humor, parody, and harmonies of the Turtles. (Arthur Lee produced a 1964 record with Hendrix on guitar, and Hendrix appeared on the group's 1970 "False Start" album). Obviously, this is not a comprehensive list, but it perhaps suggests the heterogeneity of their influences, producing a unique and varying collection of songs.

Probably their three most famous numbers are the punk-Neanderthal version of Burt Bacharach's (!) "Little Red Book," "Seven and Seven Is," also known as "the atom bomb song" because of its thunderous A-bomb closing, and an ultra-fast version of Billy Roberts' "Hey Joe" (most famously done by Hendrix). "Little Red Book" mocks the original, with a dominating and driving beat--anchored in the drums and bass--that prefigures Punk. Love's version of "Hey Joe" is sheer genius, the vocals break up the lyrics into nursery rhyme fragments, in ironic contrast to the homicidal, misogynistic lyrics ("I shot my old lady down").

While there are many facets to "Love," their romantic, free-spirited (but less well-known) songs contrast most heavily with the hits mentioned above. These songs don't have the easy structure that marked pop/rock music of the era, but drift in several directions--a little like Jefferson Airplane, but again, pretty hard to compare to anyone else. "Orange Sky" and "She Comes in Colors" are, respectively, an introspective ballad and a jazz-inflected number that--I hate to say it--seems hippie-like: "...My love, she comes in colors... you can tell her from the clothes she wears," unless it makes you think of Yardley, who (somewhat like the Stones) appropriated the color obsession to sell their products.

Lest the band seem too obscure or inaccessible, just listen to the twin songs of "Alone Again Or" and "And More Again." These are as romantic as anything Bacharach wrote, especially the flamenco-tinged former, in which the band expresses a surprisingly powerful statement of love and idealism. The band creatively used wind instruments: The clarinet gave a floaty jazz feeling to several numbers, and the trumpet and sax supported the rhythm section and supplied solos. "Your Mind and We Belong Together" has a jangly "Byrds" guitar backing, a group that influenced Lee. "Laughing Stock" is an unusual self-referential song that somehow works, while "Your Friend and Mine--Neil's Song," is right out of "The Lovin' Spoonful." "Robert Montgomery" features their deeply "electrified" sound with surprising tempo and chord changes, and outstanding guitar work.

A few more song notes: Fans will know that "From D. C.," a relatively well-known and widely praised song, is about a former band member's bout with drugs, but the remarkable thing is how well the total sound conveys melancholy and yearning. "Can't Explain" is a rollicking sound that seems transplanted from mid-60's London and "Softly to Me" is an oddly endearing love song with awkward repetitions of the word "darling," and "Stephanie Knows Who" is an energetic, even wild kind of punk jazz. In summation, there can be no summation, because no band has ever approached their unique and wildly diverse style. These days we demand a specific identity from our bands--it's easier on our brains, and the commodification sells more records. While this was also true in the buoyant late-1960's days of "Love," the band managed to transcend these limits, and, for a brief time and for too small an audience, to triumph. Rhino Records compilation of their mostly 1967-68 material is an essential document of one of the greatest bands of that or any other era.

5 out of 5 stars Best one stop buy for Love.......2007-01-03

This is a terrific best of album, with most of the songs from 3 different Love albums. Arthur Lee, the lead singer on most songs, is dead now and Bryan McClean, the lead singer on fewer songs, passed away before Arthur did. Sometimes the lyrics are childish and sometimes they are outlandish. But the instrumental backing is always good to great to greatly inspired. For folks who want to know what rock studio music was like in the 60s, this CD is a must.

4 out of 5 stars Love - 'The Best Of .....' (Rhino) 4 1/2 stars.......2006-12-02

Irresistibly priced 22 track repertoire of Love's work,1966-1970.For those of you unfamiliar with Love, they were a 'lesser known' West Coast psych/garage rock band, that in my opinion their main man,Arthur Lee(R.I.P.-earlier this year)was a bit like Jimi Hendrix. Wonder if many would even semi-agree with me on that. Tunes here that'll have many patrons keeping this disc in their player for a bit are "My Little Red Book", "No Matter What You Do", the Leave's cover "Hey Joe", "Signed D.C.", the rocking "Seven And Seven Is", "She Comes in Colours" (didn't I hear this cut in the first Austin Powers movie?), the non-lp single "Laughing Stock" and the low-tempo "Always See Your Face". A should-have.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Love.......2006-11-06

Since I am a big fan of this group, especially Bryan Maclean, and Arthur Lee in that order, I felt this was a great compulation album to finish my collection of this great siminal mid to late 1960's Rock group.

5 out of 5 stars What Is Missing.......2006-08-08

Any Love compilation is worth any price. But what is not there, is the little gem on the B side of a certain 45 rpm record. When we bought 45s way back when, we always played the B side first, lest we miss any rare gem. In 1967, when Elekta released the single with "7 And 7 Is" as the A side, what else could be on the B side, but "No. Fourteen"(the wit of Arthur Lee is evident with this prank). Not a throwaway, by a long shot, but an interesting tune in its own right. So find the 45 and listen. Rule of thumb when listening to Love: remove your socks first or risk having them knocked off anyway. Noteworthy: If you find a 45 from The Fastest Group Alive with the A side song as "Bears", listen to the B side called "Cotton Picking Time In The Valley". It rivals Love for quirky B sides.

2 out of 5 stars uneven, and not what it claims to be.......2006-02-12

This CD is actually a compilation of stuff recorded between 1992 and 2001, hardly the "best of" for an artist who has been recording since the 1960s. The liner notes are by David Byrne, but it seems from the credits that David Byrne did not actually choose the songs.

Overall the CD is torn between a bland "World Music" esthetic, and a more pensive bossa-nova sound. There are good songs on this CD, but I'm giving it 2 stars because it so badly disappoints its packaging. There is a song on here that affects "rap music" lyrics, and others that are equally impotent, both style-wise and content-wise. One of the really good songs on here is "Cucurrucucu Paloma", which some may remember as the central song in the movie "Talk to Her" directed by Almodovar.

5 out of 5 stars CAETANO.......2005-09-01

Somethings are beyond space and time despite being in it, and affecting elements therein. Such is the voice of Caetano Veloso. So in lieu of offering a critique of "The Best of Caetano Veloso", I shall proffer my best attempt with the facet of myself that transcends boundaries in a psalm:

Caetano

Your Voice is like an Angel at the "Gate Beautiful",
whose charge is giving wings to SOULS fortunate to come that far
Your Voice, Your LIFE: your Voice is LIFE,
endearing responses from any organic as it drifts overhead; aerial to, yet somehow earthly and at the HEART of the matter;
taking hold of what is exterior and interior and reconciling these two hands; hand in hand the conflict ends from the purity and savoir faire in your Voice

I thought I was familiar with enchantment, until I heard you sing
Your Voice reminded me; artfully, rapturously admonished me, that there was still yet more to be caressed down deep in me

Despite the despot, and the fanatic, and the self-obsessed; in spite of their daily oppression, they cannot undo the design of a wings mission;
to take us far away from rancor, though we are still standing near.

5 out of 5 stars Rare Fine Wine.......2005-04-14

Caetano's music takes a bit of effort to understand for Americans used to pop or rock. Those who put in a bit of effort will be rewarded with finely crafted art pieces that defy conventional classification. This cd provides a sampling of his latest efforts. Theres a lot of orchestration and refferences to cool jazz, big band Latin music from the 40's and 50's, and bossa nova flavored avant guarde soft poetic stuff. Jaques Morelembaums cello arrangements are sublime. All of it is so beautiful and unique. If you like some of it keep exploring his music. There are more electric works like Estrangeiro, Circulado and Tropicalia 2 with Gilberto Gil. All of it is of timeless quality.

1 out of 5 stars The very worst of Caetano Veloso.......2005-03-06

I bought this phony Veloso CD thinking it would contain his best songs however, David Byrne has destroyed the art and music of Caetano Veloso in this CD. It should be renamed "b-sides."

5 out of 5 stars O que e uma cosa bella?.......2004-06-27

"The painter Paul Gauguin loved the light of Guanabara Bay / The composer Cole Porter loved the lights of her night / Guanabara Bay / The anthropologist Claude Levi-Strauss detested Guanabara Bay / It looked to him like a toothless mouth / And I -- if I knew her less would I love her more? / I'm blind from so often seeing her, from so often staring starry / What is a beautiful thing?" -- O Estrangeiro

Any great musician must be some sort of philosopher as well. Otherwise they're just playing so many notes. Art presents us with somebody's perspective of the truth. Some artists are charlatans and try to paint everything with a rosy glow that will please everyone (and satisfy no one) and that can be safely hung in or played in a dentist's office. Some artists suffer, but haven't the intelligence or skill to dignify the awfulness of their art. Some artists only want to talk about themselves, which is okay sometimes.

But a really good artist -- that is someone who present us with the ugly and the beautiful, enthusiasm and lethargy, sorrow and pleasure, all of it. And Caetano Veloso does it with subtlety and tremendous good taste.

"And the epic grandeur of a still unfinished people / Attracts us, dazzles us and excites us / Nothing matters, not the profile of that mansion / Not the TV cameras, not even that Paul Simon record / No one, no one is a citizen / If you go to the party in Pelourinho, and even if you don't go / Think of Haiti, pray for Haiti / Haiti's right here, Haiti's not quite here." -- Haiti

This Best Of Album gives you Veloso in various epochs of his career, so it's a pretty good overview. There are the dissonant noises in "O Estrangeiro" like echoes at a subway station, the gentle strumming and chanted "Manhattan" litany of "Manhata", the cathedral hymn-like "Michelangelo Antonioni", and the classic Brasiliana of "Na Baixa do Sapateiro".

Buy this album and listen to it many times. There is even a special message for us Americans and English (who knows, maybe even the French are implicated): it's great that some of our citizenry love international music. Otherwise that music might never get produced. But it is a shame that often people must leave the countries which are the source of their music in order to propagate the melodies. I hope international stardom has brought Caetano Veloso the freedom to do as he pleases.

"Some may like a soft Brazilian singer / But I've given up all attempts at perfection." -- O Estrangeiro

Long before they reinvented themselves as the kings of Saturday Night Fever, The Bee Gees were an amazing Australian trio singing songs that were more rooted by lilting folk guitar melodies than dance floor beats. The high, almost falsetto, harmonies were in place even in their hits of the mid- and late-1960s. The melodicism of hits like "Holiday" and "I've Gotta Get a Message to You" had a darker, even eerie, quality compared to the more typically melancholy "To Love Somebody." Comparing the music on Best of the Bee Gees, Volume I to the later antics of the Brothers Gibb is the proverbial apples and oranges. It's clear that the boys truly knew how to craft a hit regardless of the genre, but it does beg the question, "Will the real Bee Gees please stand up?" While both periods have their moments, the smart money seems to be on their earlier work. --Steve Gdula

5 out of 5 stars endless great hits.......2007-07-06

Anyone who grew up with the Bee Gees knows that their music will last forever. Beautiful voices, unique harmony, songs that never seem to grow old. Whether you're in your 50's or 20's, they have songs that eveyone seems to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Proof that Bee Gees are much more than a disco dynamo.......2007-02-18

The early Bee Gee's are so good, it's a shame their career is judged by the disco days only.
2 songs sold me to early Bee Gee's Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You is just as good as the Moody Blues complete w/mellotron and gregorian chants way before enigma and actually before the moody blues.
New York Mining Disaster- It's so good, it's like a lost Beatles song from Help or something.

4 out of 5 stars Bee Gees album is "but good".......2006-11-03

Delicately recorded and mournfully sung, these choice cuts from the early years of the Bee Gees belong in any serious record collector's stash.
The "hook," if you want to call it that, is "Holiday," and "I started a joke." Both selections ask us to use our heads as to what the lyrics really mean. And somehow, it adds to one's enjoyment. Culled from master tapes before "Saturday Night Fever," the cuts demonstrate musicality that is a departure from their disco peroid -- and they are simply refreshing to hear againn.

3 out of 5 stars Get the DVD Instead.......2006-01-22

If you like these songs, get the DVD "One Night Only" where they peformed most of these with a good band an they sound GREAT.

5 out of 5 stars Bee Gees at their best.......2005-09-01

This is the Bee Gees at their best, during their dark early years.

New York Mining Disaster is about men trapped underground, coming to gripes with their mortality, I've got to get a message to you is about a condemed man on his last mile. the list goes on with wonderful gems. Holiday, I Can't See Nobody Listen Listen and I Started a Joke. There's the classic Words that I think is a perfect song. Massachusetts is a very touching song as well.
