5 out of 5 stars World's best trumpet player.......2007-05-12

The incredible Wynton Marsalis plays the classics of the brass solo genre.
If you want to hear some very delightful music played by a most impressive instrumentalist, get this album.

Listening to this will make you realize the mediocrity of most of today's popular music. They don't grow people like Jean-Baptiste Arban any more.

5 out of 5 stars Credit Wynton Marsalis.......2007-01-25

This outstanding collection of turn-of-the-last-century cornet solos is a collector's item. Mr. Marsalis (and the ensemble) makes it all sound so easy and enjoyable. As an instrumental music teacher I find hearing these inspires many of my high school high brass players to work on them.

3 out of 5 stars stylistically wrong.......2005-05-29

Having studied with an international authority on cornet playing I can con fidently say that Wynton's cornet playing is ok at best. More than anything hes tryying to sell CDs rather than capture the essence of Cornet playing, like most of wyntons playing its alot of flash but no substance. Great if your a trumpet head and you get off on empty virtuostic fluff.

5 out of 5 stars Wynton, Wynton, Wynton........2005-01-01

There are times, when I'm listeing to Wynton, I get depressed like the flash of a 64th note played. His sounds is so pure and wonderful. He rocks. I don't mind realizing that there aren't many other trumpeteers out there like him.

I met him once actually. In Alice Tully Hall, after a holiday concert. He stood on the stage towering over my dad, brother and I. He called us "the frontline", after my dad telling him we play the trumpet, trombone, and clarinet. What a cool guy.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but not the best.......2004-11-28

Marsalis is an excellent trumpet player, there is no question as to that. He is certainly not the best in the world, however. I prefer a better recording of Carnival of Venice and many other cornet solos by Gerard Schwarz. The spirit of such solos is lost when they are put to ensemble accompaniment, Schwarz interprets them far better in my opinion. Also, his technical mastery is at least equal to that of Wynton's, or was when he made the album. His sound is sweeter and more perfect to my ear. And this is not the only album in which you can hear dazzling technical pieces, either. Sergei Nakariakov, Rafael Mendez, and Allen Vizzutti are the most proficient players with recordings out there. Nakariakov and Mendez both do better readings of the Paganini, playing the entire song double-tonguing and circular breathing. The Mendez Flight of the Bumblebee has a much better sound and fits the piece more, too. The most amazing song I have ever heard is the Carnival of Venus, by Vizzutti. Listen to anything by Wynton and then this song, you will be absolutely amazed. The last variation of the Marsalis is Vizzutti's first, and they get harder from there. Simply put, this is a good recording and the most accessible, but there are better ones out there. I wouldn't buy this to hear cornet solos or amazing technical pieces, but for hearing other interpretations. I prefer Schwarz, Mendez, Vizzutti, and Nakariakov.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get better than this........2001-08-01

I first bought this recording on vinyl back in 1975. Gerard Schwartz has since moved on to a career in conducting, but as this recording shows, he's a true Master of his craft. I'm a trumpet player and I know what a good sound is. This guy's got it!

More than technical perfection, the tunes are delivered with delicacy, grace and power.

5 out of 5 stars starting over.......2001-07-03

This is a very good cd for a trumpet player. Many songs of Herbert L. Clarke and Jean Babtiste Arban are there in their familiar versions. If you get this cd, you ought to get Cornet Favorites also. The solos on both cd's stick to the versions found in Arban's Complete Conservatory Method and Clarke's 24 Charateristic Studies, so you can follow them note for note. Carnaval has wind symphony accompaniment and Cornet Favorites has piano accompaniment.

5 out of 5 stars starting over.......2001-07-03

If you have the Arban Complete Conservatory Method and Herbert Clarke's 24 Characteristic Studies, then you have the versions of the solos that are played on this cd, and can benefit from hearing them played. All songs use piano accompaniment so you will have no trouble hearing the cornet. Carnaval (Winton Marsalis) has some of the same songs, but the cornet is harder to hear because of the wind symphony accompniment.

5 out of 5 stars excellence.......2000-05-30

This is the best verison of Carnival I have heard. Classic Wynton also provides a fantastic interpretation on the most difficult trumpet solo of all time. But Schwarz shows amazing control, fantastic percision, and baffling dexterity. The Debutante and the Bride, etc. are also impressive. Its a shame Schwarz gave up trumpet to conduct. Having played these songs myself, I definitely recommend it to any classical trumpet enthusiast/student

3 out of 5 stars Cornet Favorites.......1999-12-28

I enjoyed the cd because of the literature being performed. However, Schwarz's performance is mediocre and lacks luster. The sound is dull and uninviteing. The tempos were unusal and it felt there was no ensemble with the trumpet and piano performance.
I felt there was not a musical product produced in this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Kato rides into rock glory (again).......2004-06-20

An album rich in good songs and peerless execution, both in technique and style. Nash's presence is so large and his music so gloriously rocknroll, I cannot understand why he is not a bigger star, and that extends moreso to the great Urge Overkill. But stardom is not the point. The point is, the music-buying masses didnt get Urge, they were ahead of their time and they remain one of the last great rock bands.
This album is a slick production that encompasses a wide range of rock styles, all performed beautifully by Kato with virtuoso rock guitars, savvy use of keyboards and his ongoing love affair with female backing vocals featuring prominently throughout.
Debutante, the song, is so goddamned groovy it reminds me somehow of the Stones, I think it's the bass. Queen of the Gangstas is a masterpiece, just a very cool tune, with a great set of dynamics played with that kind of laid back cool and then machine gun blast reminiscent of the Urge sound. Zooey Suicide is the kind of number that should be an instant FM Rock hit but that's far too logical for today's market. Octaroon is uniquely dreamy and funky, with superior vocals and guitars playing around with an exotic subject. Black Satin Jacket shows Nash's vulnerability and the results are touching, as is the Steely Dan cover Dirty Work, a faithful rendition and really pretty stirring.
Born in the Eighties is super-cool, and Blue Wallpaper rounds it off nicely, an obscure and subtle rock dirge, coming across like a cousin of (What is) Artane off UO's Supersonic Storybook.
Debutante should have been rated among the best releases of the year 2000. Beautiful production throughout, this is a pleasure to listen to and one that grows on you.

4 out of 5 stars much better than I first thought.......2001-06-21

yeah, for some reason, the first two spins didn't do much for me, but then I gave it another chance and it started to kick in. Maybe there's one extra ballad, but really this picks up pretty much where Urge Overkill left off, and in my book that means it's a Must-Have. Nash rocks harder here than I realized at first... what can I say? I was spaced.

2 out of 5 stars Music Dude from AZ.......2000-11-07

If your an Urge Overkill fan like myself you WILL be disapointed. Unless of course your one of those people who like easy listening duets with corny sounding vocal tempos.

There are only 3 maybe 4 tracks out of 13 that are worth listening to. The Rest of it is way to soft and strange sounding. Normally Nash's soft stuff is great, but this stuff is like easy listening music set to the sound track of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Seriously. Not what I expecting from Nash. I had been anticipating this CD for some time and was totally disapointed.

Get rid of the duets, get back on the booze, call up King and tell him you need a swift kick. Then go and re-listen to All your Urge Stuff. That's what we want to here! Forget evolving! Leave that to shine-head o'conner and Cher!

What's this generation comming to?

4 out of 5 stars Let the music stand by itself........2000-08-07

I can honestly say that I own all that Nash Kato has done (yes, I have the Urge Overkill Album "I, Strange" on Ruthless and his one off thing with Steve Albini on the "Tellus All Guitars" comp.) I can honestly say that this is exactally what another Urge Overkill album would have sounded like. The hooks are there and so are the great sounding guitars. I don't think that Nash will get a fair shake for this album because people have preconcieved notion about him, because for some reason they were left with a bad taste in their mouth after "Exit the Dragon". But although that album wasn't as good as "Saturation", it still had merit. No one bothered to give it a chance, even the label left them out in the wind. "Debutante" is a very strong effort and deserves consideration on it's own. Song's like "Queen of the Gangsters", "Octoroon", "Born in the Eighties", "Cradle Robbers", and "Zooey Suicide" are all songs that should be played on radio or atleast M2. Why everyone want Nash to fail I haven't figured out yet, but one of these days he will rise again and shove it in the faces who have kicked him when he was down, and I think that "Debutante" may be the one that could do it if listen to with no preconcieved notion about who it is or how it should sound. I just have one more question, what the hell is a Octoroon?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2000-07-22

This is a terrific cd, all the songs are awesome. I saw Nash live at the 31st Street Pub in Pittsburgh and he gave a great performance.

These 26 selections, recorded from 1904 to 1922, document the work of an important American player and band composer. Despite the trivial nature of most of the music, one can't help listening to Herbert Clarke's playing with respect and growing affection. He was a most elegant player, with a beautiful tone that comes across even in the earliest of these recordings. The showiest pieces, which can be quite dazzling, are still performed with taste and musicianship. This disc is an important sound document, and the transfers from even the earliest of the recordings are surprisingly listenable. Highly recommended to all brass and nostalgia lovers. --Leslie Gerber

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant playing transcending primitive recording technique.......2001-01-11

Hearing this CD -- despite the distracting surface noise from the primative acoustic recordings from which this CD was remastered -- I appreciate for the first time the greatness of Clarke as a cornet soloist. If he is not the greatest to date, he is surely one of the giants upon whose shoulders modern virtuosi of the trumpet (which has pretty much replaced the cornet) stand.

Clarke's sheer artistry in both composition and performance still dazzle and his interpretive ability brings to life some of the 'tear jerkers' of the golden age of popular brass music in a way no modern performance comes close to.

Although on first hearing one could be very much distracted by the primitive recordings, the brass player soon focuses on Clarke's playing so completely that the the surface noise disappears.

Every trumpet player and cornetist, more, every brass player and lover of band music, should own a copy.

5 out of 5 stars The Master of the Cornet.......2001-01-04

God bless Crystal Records for taking the time to re-issue these extremely rare and valuable recordings from an unfortunately neglected giant in American musical history. Most people today don't realise how famous and influential Mr. Clarke and his peers (Sousa, Pryor et. al.)were on the American musical scene at the beginning of the Twentieth century. It is very important that these recordings (and others from this period, the birth of sound recording) be preserved for future generations.

As for those who could not stand the "hiss" on these recordings, how spoiled can you be? You simply miss the point of all this. We all know that these records were made during the infancy of the recording industry, and that they didn't have the technology we now have. I find it thrilling to listen to them just as they are. Recorded sound is the closest we have to time travel, and I find it fascinating to listen to these recordings as though I was there when they were first made. And most of all, through the marvel of recorded sound (Mr. Sousa notwithstanding) I can listen today to the greatest cornetist who ever lived, even though he passed away over 50 years ago.

Hopefully Crystal Records will someday put out an anthology of original Sousa and Pryor Band recordings.

5 out of 5 stars Clarke is the cornet master!.......2000-08-03

Herbert Clarke is the finest cornetist the planet has ever seen. The technical brilliance on Carnival is just breathtaking. The sound quality of the recording is little hinderance on the true genius behind this man's playing. Don't let the hiss bother you!!!

5 out of 5 stars heartbreaking music from a bygone era.......2000-03-22

These vintage recordings would have been otherwise lost to us--and a great loss at that. Clarke plays so beautifully, esp. those pieces that he wrote. It's notall oom-paa-paa, but music that is deeply affecting and stirring. This is the effect that Wynton Marsalis was going for in his "Carneval." While Marsalis's album is a wonderful tribute, this is the original. A must-have for any serious trumpet player.

1 out of 5 stars Be careful.......1999-09-14

Watch out if you want to buy this cd! It's a good cd with Herbert Clarke playing some of his own pieces the way they should be played...but the recording is TERRIBLE! Naturally, it's a 1904 recording! But the hiss for the first half of the cd is almost painful. It's NOT something you can just ignore, so don't be caught unawares.

Given that Cooler Kids are the brainchild of a previously underground Brooklynite, DJ Kazimir, and Luscious Jackson bassist Jill Cuniff, you might expect them to be arty in a Williamsburg loft sort of way. Instead, the Kids' retro sound is intended for 24-hour-party people who live to dance, little sister, dance. The beats are borrowed from '70s disco and '80s techno; the message is never deeper than the song titles themselves: "Viva La Fever," "Hook Up," and "E is for Everybody." Still, it's hard not to get swept away by the soaring, infectious chorus of "All Around the World" or singer Sisely Treasure's endlessly enthusiastic vocals. Clearly intended as a crossover dance-music smash, Punk Debutante is fun in the same half-goof way as earlier New York phenoms such as Tom Tom Club and Deee-lite. --David Bombeck

5 out of 5 stars Really Fun.. My Favorite Pop Album EVER!.......2006-10-04

Forget all the 1-star reviews.. this music is made for people that like music that you can dance to & listen to without having meaningful lyrics. It is highly addictive, care free, CATCHY CATCHY CATCHY (I cannot repeat that enough), energetic, & fun. My favorite pop album ever!

3 out of 5 stars Good or Bad? Listen and Choose!.......2004-10-10

Punk Debutante could be best described as really cheesy dance music. I first heard Cooler Kids' "All Around The World" while listening to a net radio station. The song was catchy so I just had to buy the album. None of the other songs stood out as AATW, but they weren't that bad. I personally would not recommend this album to anyone. I mean, I listen to it on occassion but only when I want something to dance to or just to have something playing while driving. The music's fun but not to be taken seriously.

1 out of 5 stars Vapid "Debutante".......2004-09-25

It's the brainstorm result Luscious Jackson bassist and a DJ -- it can't fail, right? Wrong. Pop group Cooler Kids made their debut with vapid, bubblegummy pop music, with a brief guilty-pleasure high... before you forget every last note.

The sound? Basic keyboard dance music with a teen-pop twist. The bouncy "All Around the World (Punk Debutante)" sounds amusing and catchy, until you realize that all the others sound pretty much the same. The tinkly "Morning Star," vapid "Sha La La La," faux-exotic "Bali Hideaway," and insanely annoying "E is for Everybody" are more or less based on the same beats, the same rhythm.

There's dance music, and there's dance music -- there's the best of Kylie Minogue like her "Fever" album. And then there's empty dance-pop like "Cooler Kids," which seems to be tailor-made to 13-year-olds shopping at the mall. There's a vaguely dated sound to the music, a mix of keyboard synths and a disco-ish rhythm.

Contrary to what reports would have you believe, the vocals are not supplied by Luscious Jackson bassist Jill Cuniff. She gives a few backing vocals, but the primary singing is provided by somebody called Sisely Treasure. Treasure's voice isn't great, but it isn't too bad either.

But if Treasure's voice is okay, the songwriting is pure idiocy. These are the sorts of songs where "when I first met you/I was so unbruised/I didn't know what love was" counts as a deep emotion. These are the sorts of fluff spun around one catchy phrase ("sha la la la la," "viva la fever"). These are songs with lines like "When I walk through the door I'm a debutante/when I punk through the door I'm a debutante." Nuff zed.

Cooler Kids makes their debut with a collection of vapid dance-pop, although it would make a great soundtrack for a similarly vapid teen movie. I think. It's hard to remember songs this generic once they're turned off.

1 out of 5 stars A child could do better.......2003-10-30

This is the most pointless music I have ever heard. (...) share it with friends and laugh it up, but don't expect anything that is actually good to be on it. It is the Plan 9 From Outer Space of music.

Saw Cooler Kids In Concert & Loved This CD!, August 13, 2003
Reviewer: Michael A Andrews from San Francisco, CA United States
I saw the Cooler Kids in concert and was impressed by the energy on stage by lead singer, former Luscious Jackson bassist, Jill Cuniff. The music production is supplied by the second member, Brooklynite - DJ Kazimir. After I heard the All Around the World Megamix which included samples of several of the Cooler Kids title tracks on Punk Debutante, what a great introduction to the full length album. My personal favorites are: Blue Nile and Remember That Song! Parents will be pleased that Life After Sex was removed from the final edit.

This is how we all wish we could play. A beautiful sound and good arrangements. This is a brass band cd that will appeal to almost everyone. If brass bands recorded more music like this, there would be a greater following. (There are those of us on the back row who will think - how does he do it? - he must have sold his soul.)

Space Cadet - Debutante (Kirtland Records)
By Jennifer Robertson

Space Cadet is a portrait of unfairness - they're a great band you haven't heard of but should have, and their sophomore full-length, Debutante, is a great record you haven't heard but should.

Even though the name of the band's previous c.d. is Greatest Hits, the quality of Debutante's punk-pop may be worth an honest retrospective in the near future. The disc is chock full of catchy, head-bobbing tracks that are not the handiwork of novices. As an artist, veteran Denton-based singer-songwriter Ted Levin has grown exponentially.

Produced by Taylor Tatsch (Ryan Cabrera, Jeff Price), Debutante traverses the same lyrical terrain as just about every other pop-punk outfit, including All-American Rejects and locals 41 Gorgeous Blocks, but Space Cadet manages to make the expected sound surprising.

The big hit of the disc is a cover. Unfortunate, yes. But good, very good. While Levin doesn't have a raspy voice, his cooler-than-thou delivery helps him pull off a great version of Kim Carnes' 1981 classic "Bette Davis Eyes." Local alt-rock radio outlets have even taking a liking to it. Pretty fly for some Denton guys. -

5 out of 5 stars Space Cadet - Debutante.......2005-11-29

Space Cadet's sophomore release on Kirtland Records, Debutante is a thoughtful and timely tribute to the American Princess of today. A collection of works inspired by frontman Ted Levin's troubled relationship with a girl who wanted more in life than the struggling singer could provide. "There is such an emphasis on financial and material success brainwashed into girls today. It makes it tough for someone like me, pursuing my dream of having the world hear my music, to provide that kind of life."

The band enlisted producer Taylor Tatsch to co-produce Debutante. Within a few months the band crafted 12 original tracks and a remake of 80's smash hit "Bette Davis Eyes", originally recorded by Kim Carnes. Filled with unforgettable hooks and melodies, Debutante showcases Levin's growth as songwriter. Joined by Brad Steiger (bass and vocals) and Danny Knight (drums), the band also showcases their growth as musicians.

The new CD still maintains the bands ever present influence of '70's groups like, The Cars, David Bowie, and Cheap Trick. "I don't want the sounds of today to ruin how I remember the sounds that shaped me as a writer growing up". This can be clearly heard in SC's first single, a remake of the 1981 classic, "Bette Davis Eyes." "It was always one of my favorite songs as a kid and re-doing it seemed to fit perfectly with the whole 'Debutante' theme. I wanted to put our stamp on a song that was originally sung by a woman, and recorded with drum machines and synthesizers."

5 out of 5 stars Surreal Masterpiece - forgotten gem.......2003-08-30

This has got to be one of my 5 favorite albums since I heard it on LP many years ago. It creates a fantastic world in miniature of Paris, Kyoto and some kind of half forgotten place only found in movies.

A young Japanese woman based in Paris makes a wonderful and dreamlike ambient pop album in the 1980s! And it only gets more charming after all these years (and it can finally be picked up affordably on CD). It's an encapsulated visit to a world that is at times atmospheric, eccentric, funny or spooky with time spent with familiar songs done unexpectedly and original material that flows beautifully.

It includes original songs and covers as diverse as Nino Rota, Suicide and David Lynch. The producers are Colin Newman (of Wire) and Marc Hollander (Aksak Maboul).

5 out of 5 stars Lovely cult classic reissued.......2003-08-30

First released in 1988 and never been on CD except in Japan, this is an eclectic collection of 19 musical miniatures, the influences of which include Nino Rota, Suicide, Eraserhead, Faure.. plus her original compositions. Charmingly produced by Colin Newman (Wire) and Aksak Maboul (label boss of Crammed), this is an intimate foray into the reverie of a Kyoto girl fascinated by European culture. The title came from a rather macabre story written by Leonora Carrington, but the music is more gentle and innocent. Truly a wonderful classic.

5 out of 5 stars Grimethorpe is Never Grim!.......2001-01-19

West Yorkshire in England consistantly produces eight to ten of the best brass bands in all the world. The Grimethorpe Collery Band's "Melody Shop" demonstrates why this band is always counted among the finest. This particular CD offers the listener a wide variety of musical tidbits. For the lovers of classical music, Grimethorpe's rendition of the Galop from Rossini's "William Tell" will certainly put you in that Lone Ranger mood!(This piece was heard in the movie "Brassed Off" with Grimethorpe providing the soundtrack for the fictional Grimley Band featured in the movie.)For 70s fans, the band does a hard-charging version of Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park."

There is even a hymn on the CD. Barrie Gott's "Lightwalk" (from the old hymn tune "Walk in the Light) actually comes out of the Salvation Army Brass Band literature. I doubt that most listeners ever heard a hymn swing like this one!

My personal favorite is the cut of "Lohengrin: Act 3 Prelude" by Wagner. It is hard to believe that this is a brass band- and I mean ALL BRASS- playing with such fire and technical accuracy. What a group! What a piece! What a wonderful combination!

If you own no brass band CDs, this is a good place to start a collection. It listens "easy," has some tunes you know, and is consistantly entretaining.
