Customer Reviews:
My favorite album. English church music at its finest........2005-10-06
Whether you have a couple dozen albums of English choral music or whether you're looking for an introduction to English choral music, this two CD collection is a must. Here you will find a wide selection of sacred favorites, from Gregorian chant to Ralph Vaughan Williams. It's a misnomer to call it "Anglican," since this would exclude (in addition to, of course, the pre-Reformation Latin hymns) the likes of Thomas Tallis and William Byrd -- both Catholics that kept to the ancient faith despite Elizabeth's (albeit relatively mild) persecutions. Tallis and Byrd set the standard in the 16th century for the distinctive "Englishness" (as opposed to Continental European) style of English choral music, with its soaring majesty yet somehow coupled with a subtle and sustained beauty (as opposed to the Continental ups and downs and often tiresome exaggerations). For those of us in the English-speaking world, this is our heritage. Let's treasure it. As for the recording itself, the mixing is superb. While listening, it's quite easy to imagine yourself in the beautiful King's College Chapel or perhaps heaven itself.
The grand tradition of English music.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church previously issued as two separate discs, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The discs here are straight copies of those discs; hence, if you have those already, there is no need to purchase this - on the other hand, if you do not have the other discs, this is a bargain.
--Music--
This is all unaccompanied music, sung in a cathedral chapel acoustically suited for such music. The first disc has four primary sections: Music of the Latin Rite; Music of the Reformation; Music of the Restoration; and Anglican Revival and the twentieth century. The most famous composers in English music history -- Tallis, Byrd, Gibbons -- combine with later masters such as Purcell, Stanford, Howells, Walton, Britten and Vaughan Williams to form a truly masterful collection. These are anthems, hymns and other liturgical pieces that have remained important in Anglican worship, and can be often heard in situ on Sundays around the world. However, the Cambridge Singers bring their special music talent to the task, producing a good standard bearer for music of the English Church.
On the second disc, there are six Latin motets, set by composers such as Taverner, Howells, Stanford, Vaughan Williams, Philips and Dering. Anthens and Introits include notables Tomkins and Purcell, and lesser-known composers such as Amner, Bairstow and Goss. Hymns span the range from old to modern, including a hymn by John Rutter himself. The disc ends with three prayer settings, including one by the underappreciated John Sheppard, and another from William Harris, whose hymn serves as the title to the companion disc. These anthems and hymns show a powerful range of music, yet show a consistent tone also that makes it rather distinctive of the music of the English church.
The group's power and grace is second to none, particularly when singing this kind of music in a place such as Ely Cathedral, arguably the most natural of settings possible.
--Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words of each anthem or hymn. The notes for each piece also includes brief biographical information of the composer, and unique information about each work, when particular composers are represented more than once. One thing conspicuously missing is much biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the most basic of information.
--John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.
--The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. Many are former members of the choir of Clare College and other Cambridge collegiate choirs (hence the name, Cambridge Singers). In the quarter-century since the founding, the Cambridge Singers have produced an impressive body of recordings.
music of great beauty.......2005-04-24
Pop one of these CDs into your car stero, turn up the volume and feel yourself drift into a sublime peace. Can music manifest the existence of God?
Excellent Selection, Excellent Performance.......2004-07-28
This two-CD compilation by the Cambridge Singers is truly very good. The repertoire is very diverse and only the best representations of composers and time periods are performed. ALthough most of the pieces were not written with a mixed choir in mind, the Cambridge Singers sing it so well you would not have had any idea. Their performances are careful and exquisite.
Best all-in-one English music CD ever.......2004-04-20
This is a re-release, as one set, of two of my favorite CDs ever: "Faire is the Heaven" and "Hail Gladdening Light" by the Cambridge singers. This is a fabulous compilation of everyone's favorite works from the English Cathedral tradition, all the way from Taverner (16th century) to Tavener (21st century). The selection of works is great and touches all the most important genres. The performance is exquisite, elegant, faultless. The Cambridge Singers have a softer, less edgy sound than the Tallis Scholars, and are more expressive, which may make them easier for some people to listen to, especially for the more recent works. They are no less musical. The Parsons Ave Maria alone brings one to tears. If you want an introduction to English church music, this is the CD to start with. Also makes a great gift, if you already love this music and want to introduce someone else to it.

One of the basics, plain and simple........2005-10-17
I can hardly ever seem to find any choral CD anywhere that truly hits the spot, and the reason is clearly that this was one of my very first. Nobody who loves English cathedral music or English choral singing in general should be without this disc, it is a basic. Aside from the approaching the highest possible standards of choral singing and being an exemplar of the stereotypical English choral sound (straight-tone sopranos, not straight-tone EVERYONE, clear and floating tenors, etc.), most of the tracks on this recording are total gems.
Of particular note are the Howells and Vaughan Williams, several of the Renaissance pieces, probably the best rendition of Tavener's Hymn to the Mother of God out there, "A Litany" by Walton, and Harris' "Bring Me, O Lord God" is a stunningly gorgeous end to the CD that will give you chills.
Eternal light.......2005-09-23
Recorded in the Lady Chapel of Ely Cathedral, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a duo of discs dedicated to Music of the English Church with this title, 'Hail, Gladdening Light', and its companion piece, 'Faire is the Heaven'. The title of this disc derives from modern hymn (Charles Wood, in the early twentieth century) set to a more ancient text - a good example of the pairing of the ancient and the modern, the traditional and the timely.

As Good As It Gets.......2003-05-27
What a beautiful CD of English sacred music. I can't imagine a more perfect group of musicians than John Rutter and the Cambridge singers to capture the full range of emotional and spiritual expression in these selections. This is as good as sacred music performance gets.
Wonderful!.......1999-05-08
This CD is the most touching and beautiful collection of music from my homeland: it moves me beyond words.
Rutter's Cambridge Singers at their best.......1998-09-12
Spanning the centuries from Tallis to Tavener, this collection is well-chosen and shows off the skills of the choir and its conductor. If you are a devotee of the "straight-tone" choir (as the Cambridge Singers always are), any of their CDs would be delight. However, this one (and a similar one, "Faire is the Heaven") is almost like a good back-rub: leaving you relaxed, invigorated, and wanting more. (Assuming English church music is on your short list of favorite genres.)
Of special note are the title cut, Rutter's own "Loving Shepherd", and the last, "Bring Us, O Lord" by Harris. They are exquisitely conducted and sung. You want the last 6-8 measures of "Loving Shepherd" to last forever.

Images in sound.......2005-09-26
John Tavener is a rare creature - he is a composer known and admired by Western audiences who has as a primary focus and influence his Eastern Orthodox tradition and liturgy. The very title of this CD, Ikons, gives one the sense that these are pictures or images in sound. Icons are objects that help direct worship and veneration, and that is certainly true of these compositions as well.
The first piece, 'Thunder Entered Her', derives from a hymn by St. Ephraim, one of the few hymn writers whose hymns have been found in virtually every Christian tradition - he lived at the crossroads of Empire and Eastern world at a critical juncture in Christian history, and his work continues its influence, as felt her in Tavener. This is a Nativity hymn, in praise of God and appreciation of Mary.
'The Lamb' and 'The Tiger', written separately, are both inspired by William Blake's texts. Both, according to Tavener, were written in honour of people, the former for his three-year-old nephew, and the later for Philip Shepherd on his sixty-fifth birthday. The piece 'God is with us' is the opening of the Orthodox Christmas Eve compline service. The remaining pieces, full of passion, were all written in honour of people who died sudden deaths, including Tavener's mother - Tavener said, 'The music on every occasion was written very quickly, as if they were parting gifts from those who had died.'
Perhaps Tavener's best-known (or at least most widely heard) piece was the 'Alleluia' sung at the close of the funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales. This disc gives a much fuller account of Tavener's power as a composer.
There is something of variability in the performances here. In general they are very good, but there are occasional instances where either the performance or the recording might have been better. The BBC Singers are a very good group, directed here by Simon Joly, with accompaniment by Christopher Bowers-Broadbent on the organ. The BBC Singers advertise themselves as 'the only full-time prfoessional chamber choir in Britain,' and have 24 members who regularly perform for radio and television, as well as live performances.
This is a lovely disc, a good collection of great compositions.

This could be a good first choice for someone looking to try the music of John Tavener. Most of the selections are available on other CDs. However, it contains two or three comparative rarities -- "The Uncreated Eros," a setting of Genesis 2:21-23, 25, which has a quality of hushed mystery, and a setting of George Herbert's "Love Bade Me Welcome" (which Ralph Vaughan Williams also set to music, including it in the Five Mystical Songs). I have around 20 Tavener CDs, and this is one of the ones I turn to most often.

Customer Reviews:
Okay, but too muddy and quiet.......2005-09-20
I found this recording frustrating, for example, on "Funeral Ikos" The Holst Singers are muddy, and there is too much `ring' from the recording venue. In addition, in an attempt to respect the quietude with which the piece begins, it is simply recorded at too low a volume. The King's College Choir, Cambridge/Stephen Cleobury recording on "IKOS" is superior.

Customer Reviews:
Tavener at his best.......2004-04-10
How sad, that this lovely CD appears to be overlooked. It is vastly superior to Tavener's recent and deplorably grandiose Ikon of Eros, the disappointing Fall and Resurrection, etc.
I have been listening to Tavener for ten years, and the central section of "Ikon of Light," a prayer to God the Holy Spirit, remains, for me, one of Tavener's most fine works. The whole composition does a much better job, it seems to me, of expressing a longing for the true God, than the multicultural farrago of Ikon of Eros.
The CD includes the delightful "Today the Virgin" and other fine pieces.
I own nearly 30 Tavener CDs. This, Isserlis's recording of The Protecting Veil, and Thunder Entered Her, are perhaps my favorites. Cherish them -- Tavener apparently has lost his first love.

Album Description
Despite the mystic beauty of his music, John Tavener's place in Western music is a controversial one. His desire to create musical ikons for a time in which he believes 'man has lost his belief not only in God, but also in himself' is provocative. Yet part of the attraction of his music must surely arise from its symbolic nature, a reflection of his deeply-held Orthodox faith.
This collection celebrates a wide range of Tavener's choral output and includes his immediately popular setting of William Blake's The Lamb, and the luminously spiritual Ikon of Light.
Customer Reviews:
Where is this going?.......2007-03-20
I try and try to understand the fascination with Tavener. I still don't get it. This is mediocre, meandering music. At least it's well performed.
