2 out of 5 stars CD set is misnamed.......2007-06-08

They should have titled this "classical music for people who love classical music" because most of the selections are typical classical music. The title suggests it would be lively selections of "light classical" music that is more upbeat, i.e. Sabre Dance, etc. I really don't hate classical music at all and have many classical CDs in my collection but I really wanted to hear more exciting selections. I won't be purchasing any more of this set but if you like traditional classical music these are good one.

1 out of 5 stars Do not Buy.......2007-02-21

I do know it says classical music for people who hate it, but serioulsly you would have better luck never listening to classical music again. The recordings are awfull and do not do justice to any of the composers. Buy something else.

5 out of 5 stars Classical Music for People Who Hate Classical Music.......2007-01-30

We love this set of CD's. I just got a new copy because my kids keeping taking our first copy with them so that they can listen at work or in their bedrooms but then I can never find them.

2 out of 5 stars Seek better versions.......2006-12-09

If you are fairly new to classical purchases then compilation CD's can be useful for deciding what to buy next. Sometimes you only need a small taste of a piece to inspire you to buy a release with the whole performance on. The problem with this compilation however is that most of the versions are poor in performance or recording quality (or both) when compared to the best versions and the fact that the conductors aren't even credited on the track listing made me suspect that this would be the case. One of my favorite classical pieces is Tchaikovsky's 1812 festival overture but if the first CD version I had heard had been the finale excerpt that is on this compilation I may not have gone on to buy the whole thing. Luckily I heard Adrian Leaper's version first and Adrian's version is rather good.
My classical CD buying experience is limited to only a couple of dozen discs but I have found that the Naxos and Deutshe Grammophon releases are fairly safe. Avoid any release which does not name the conductors on the track listing or sleeve notes.

4 out of 5 stars It Is What It Is.......2006-10-27

It's fitting that this page is fraught with the same kind of silly snobbery that turns people off from classical music (and necessitates collections like this) in the first place.

Any criticism of this compilation, which focuses on the quality of the performances or the fact that many tracks are excerpts, misses the point. This is not a collection for people who consider such things, nor does it purport to be. The idea is to package as many ultra-famous classical melodies as possible in one affordable collection and market it to people who have never purchased a classical recording. As such, top-tier performances are likely too expensive to be sold so cheaply and are unnecessary anyway. Those of us who already know and love a piece or two can forgive the compilers the inclusion of sub-par recordings, when we are exposed to so many other beautiful pieces for the first time.

It probably comes as a shock for some to hear that most people are not familiar with these classics. We may hear snippets on TV or movies, but are left with no idea as to the composer or historical context. With that in mind, it is extremely intimidating to begin buying classical. I suppose those among us, who so thoroughly dismissed the very notion of a boxed set like this, would have us begin by buying full albums by reputable interpreters. Surprisingly enough though, the majority of people would consider that a tad cost-prohibitive.

To conclude, this is a STARTER collection. It will either affirm a listener's feelings about classical music or lead to an interest in purchasing better recordings. Ideally, I suppose the interpretations would be better, but, for reasons mentioned above, that just isn't in the cards for a collection of this nature. If you're familiar with 50 different recordings of "The Ring" series, or have season tickets to the New York Philharmonic, then this probably isn't for you. For us cretins with limited foreknowledge of classical music though, it serves as a succinct introduction with little to complain about.

4 out of 5 stars Mill. Classical review.......2007-05-13

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

4 out of 5 stars classical music for the unitiated.......2007-04-01

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

4 out of 5 stars Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

5 out of 5 stars A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-03-08

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly good.......2007-05-26

A bit of a mixed bag. The symphonies are superb. This is one of the great symphony cycles. The piano sonatas are good, very good (analog) sound. The quartets are well recorded indeed, but there are better cycles out there. The rest is OK, and the sound is genrally good.

3 out of 5 stars Look at the List of Performers First.......2006-11-17

If you want most of Beethoven sitting on one bookshelf, this is a great bargain (especially if you shop for it on amazon.de). But few if any of the performances represent the pinnacles of interpretation that most listeners demand when Beethoven is the composer. The symphonies for instance: can Blomstedt be compared to Furtwangler or (if you lean toward historically informed instrumentation) Gardiner? Most amazingly, the artists who perform the quartets -- the heart of Beethoven's music -- are not even named in the listing.
On the other hand: Vivaldi: The Masterworks is a collection including the very best interpreters, such as Fabio Biondi! Bach Edition (complete Bach) is a fabulous selection of recordings made over 20 years, and almost the same praise can be given the Complete Mozart.

5 out of 5 stars this "masterworks" series is available much more cheaply from Amazon France.......2006-05-28

there are several sets in this series and it's much cheaper to buy these from Amazon France.

included are bach, beethoven, vivaldi, brahms, dvorak, schubert, handel, hayden, and mendelssohn.

they're even cheaper than the list price once u go through the checkout (VAT is removed for overseas (out-of-france) purchases).

**also, the 'complete works of mozart' set is much cheaper there (or at Amazon Germany), too. the 'complete works of bach' is due out later this year.

3 out of 5 stars You heard guy below: Beethoven needs the royality checks! .......2006-04-07

There is quality beyond the Austrian green cardboard (which is lovely to look at, to say the least). In fact, the performance of the symphonies (Dresden Staatskapelle and Herbert Blomstedt) is alone worth the price. The Staatskapelle is a solid group, and Blomstedt, although less wellknown, holds his own. It should be mentioned that Blomstedt recorded many of the most celebrated 20th composition CDs on the market, and definitely knows his stuff. Peter Wohlert recorded mostly for compiliation lables, but to be selected by the Berlin Phil shows that he is a formdiable conductor in rank as well.

Should you buy this collection then? Given the fact that each CD cost $1.75, there is definitely the bargin factor. However, Beethoven's music desveres the top interpreters and musicians of our time - and this applies for all of his music, not just the symphonic. If you are into bargins, then proceed to buy this collection. However, if you save up a bit more, you can buy Karajan's 1963 Beethovens symphonies along with Kempff's 1956 sonata cycles for just a bit more than 70 bucks. Shop around for the string quartets, and the complete overtures should range anywhere from 15 to 30 bucks depending on the conductor/ensemble.

Overall, this is certainly an exceptional bargin. However, quality matter more than money. Besides, chicks dig people with sophisticated tastes.

5 out of 5 stars Buy my box Set!.......2006-03-21

Awesome deal, 40 CD box set of me, Beethoven! There are 3 principle reasons you should buy this box set:

This box is QUALITY my friend, made of the finest, Austrian cardboard with a lovely green finish, it is made to last! You can just set it on your dresser and whenever you need a Beethoven fix you can just pull a CD out. But don't you hate getting your CDs out of order so you can't find what the hell you're looking for?! Not with this set! They are well organized into symphonies, concerti, sonatas and such, so you can find EXACTLY what your looking for, and they have big numbers on them so you can put them right back where they belong.

And the music! Need we go into this, composed through the inspiration of God himself and penned by the greatest composer who ever walked the streets of Vienna, me, Beethoven! Top notch, all done by top performers and recorded at high, clear, digital quality, stick one in your stereo and rock out man! All of my great and mighty works are here, absolutely sublime!

Lastly, you'll be supporting me, I need those royalty checks to keep rolling in!

Buy it if you love me or just buy it if you want people to think that you're sophisticated (the chicks also dig it, I should know: Antonie Brentano, giggity!), you can't go wrong!

5 out of 5 stars Relaxing music at its finest!.......2005-10-14

This is a GREAT 10-CD set!The performances are top-notch, the music is varied, and the feelings engendered are wondrously beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Get it for $9.99 at Sam's Club!.......2005-06-22

Very nice set of CD's, very beatiful and relaxing, but don't pay $27, get it for $9 at Sam's Club. I know this will be censored but come on, how can you guys charge those saps that much! Amazon should try to find the best price for its customers, even if it sends them to different vendors. Censoring this message is a crime, DON'T DO IT. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, moving music! You'll recognize many of the pieces.......2004-02-24

John Cheng's review, below, said it's "an undeniable bargain," and I whole heartedly agree! I especially LOVE Volume 5. I have a Typing/Resume business, and I listen to Volume 5 ALL the time on my computer while I'm doing my work. It inspires me to be creative and calms me down when I'm stressed.

I would say I've _easily_ listened to Volume 5 at least 100 times, and I'm still not tired of it. That's amazing for me, because I'm also a musician (singer/pianist) and I get bored easily. I actually found the Volume 5 CD at a Thrift store, and loved it so much that I bought the whole set recently. So I've only listened to a few of the other CD's in this set, so far, and they're also great.

This is NOT boring music. My clients and family have heard it also, and they've also mentioned how soothing and wonderful these pieces are. Most of you will probably recognize a lot of these songs! You'll be saying, "OH! I remember THIS one! I haven't heard this for YEARS!!!"

It's well worth the money for 10 very full CD's!!! Try it! You won't be disappointed!

Happy listening!

5 out of 5 stars Meditative, But Not Boring.......2002-06-21

Here's the deal: If you check out the individual CDs of this collection, you'll pay way too much. That said, compare this price, and realize it is a steal at twice the price.

The list of selections is immense. 101 selections. Most of it you've heard before, but that's OK. Despite the various cute names -- quite creative -- "Vol. 9"!... you can load your CD player and enjoy them without feeling a transition of style.

It's true these aren't meditative in the sense of a Gregorian chant. Anyone familiar with classical music will recognize the composers and various movements to know this. What is true is that you can sit down and write Amazon reviews with it in the background quite comfortably. No weird interpretations, just the music as you know it.

It is also meditative in the sense of popping on it your portable player as you go for a Sunday afternoon walk. The music has just the right pacing: no quite aerobics class, but not ready for the office elevator either.

The box and jewel cases are not that flimsy kind of thing often associated with box sets. It sounds silly to review the jewel cases, but I'm frustrated with the ones I've received lately that have no meat to them. This'll do the job.

I fully recommend "Meditation: Classical Relaxation, 10 Volume Set [BOX SET].

4 out of 5 stars A Bargain and Beautiful.......2002-02-28

This is a wonderful collection of some of my most favorite classical selections. Most I already own, but still like having these all together. I could only wish that the recording level was the same for all selections. Yes, some are written to be softer, but I found it often necessary to turn the volume up or down for different selections. But aside from this minor preference, the quality, the choices, and the price are all super.

To violinists, studying and performing the Beethoven Concerto is the ultimate challenge and achievement. Vengerov says that recording it, especially under Rostropovich, his friend, mentor and frequent collaborator, is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream. Among the Concerto's innumerable recordings, this must be one of the greatest. Vengerov and Rostropovich are considered specialists of the romantic literature, especially that of Russia, but their Beethoven is a paradigm of classical nobility: calm, simple, elegant, inwardly expressive. Vengerov's tone is ravishing, pristinely pure, with a silvery shimmer and a golden glow; his bowing is seamless, letting him spin long, finely shaped phrases, his vibrato is focussed and intense. Playing from deep inside the music, he needs no external effects, not even slides, and gives musical meaning to every note, even in the accompanying passages. He uses his own brilliant, stylistically apt cadenzas. The first movement is stately and quite slow, as if the patrician conductor were restraining his youthfully fiery soloist; the second is serenely celestial, the third sprightly and mercurial. The Romances have a natural, lyrical flow, the dramatic sections balancing the meditative ones perfectly; the treacherous double-stops are impeccable. The orchestra is excellent, but the dynamic contrasts are excessive: the tuttis explode, so keep your finger on the volume control. --Edith Eisler

4 out of 5 stars Listen if only for the Kreutzer Strativarius.......2006-11-18

I bought this CD after hearing Vengerov play it live with the Green Bay Symphony at the Weidner Center just a few weeks ago. Vengerov plays the 1727 "Kreutzer" Stradivarius violin, named after former owner Rudolphe Kreutzer (1766-1831). Vengerov came to be playing in Green Bay through the efforts and support of the family of the Kreutzer's former owner, a Green Bay resident -- a rare treat for such a small city.

My suggestion: forget the pacing and focus on the stunning beauty of the instrument and the music that is made by man who loves it.

1 out of 5 stars Where is Beethoven?.......2006-10-16

If you like your Beethoven played like Mahler or Bruckner, go out and buy this CD. But if you want your Beethoven played like Beethoven, avoid this horrible performance. The tempos here are so slow, the album should be called "Beethoven on the Freeway at Rush Hour". And where are the accents? Were they left on the studio floor? Vengerov is a fabulous musician but this recording is a disgrace.

3 out of 5 stars Excellent Sound, Fine Playing from Vengerov, Rostropovich and LSO, But............2006-10-10

Maxim Vengerov is the finest violinist of my generation, whose closest peer may be Joshua Bell for both the dramatic intensity of his playing and the warm, lyrical sounds produced from his violin. I have greatly treasured his recordings of the Prokofiev and Shostakovich violin concerti with Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra, Dvorak violin concerto with Masur and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Tchaikovsky violin concerto with Abbado and the Berliner Philharmoniker, and last, but not least, Brahms violin concerto with Barenboim and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; these are among the finest violin concerti recordings I have heard from any of today's prominent violinists. Sadly, I can't accord this relatively new record with Vengerov accompanied by Rostropovich conducting the London Symphony Orchestra, the same high praise I have given to Vengerov's earlier Teldec (now Warner Classics) recordings. It deserves high praise from me only because of the exceptionally well-balanced sound engineering done by EMI's recording team; however, this performance has a lot that isn't desirable.

It was undoubtedly the late Carlo Maria Giulini who began the tendency for having slower tempi for the Beethoven violin concerto, as evidenced by his celebrated EMI recording featuring a younger Itzhak Perlman (This still remains one of my favorite recordings of the Beethoven violin concerto.), but regrettably, whereas Giulini was able to carry it off, Rostropovich's account, especially of the first movement, is glacially slow, and does not emphasize the dramatic tensions and emotional richness of Beethoven's score; it is instead, a plodding, often dull, account that is rescued by Vengerov's technically brilliant, and still, quite passionate, performance. Only the third movement, the exhilirating Rondo, sounds fine, and in Rostropovich's hands, almost as fine a performance as I have heard from the likes of both Nikolaus Harnoncourt and David Zinman in relatively recent recordings of this concerto. My only favorite tracks on this recording are of the two Romances for Violin and Orchestra, which, oddly, sound more fresh and vivid, than the performance of the violin concerto. I am sure that diehard fans of Vengerov, Rostropovich and the London Symphony Orchestra will still want to acquire this recording, but for others, I have to recommend strongly as more suitable recent alternatives, Hilary Hahn's glistening account for Sony with David Zinman conducting the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and - if it is still available - Gidon Kremer's vibrant performance for Teldec with Nikolaus Harnoncourt conducting the Chamber Orchestra Of Europe.

4 out of 5 stars Almost, but Not Quite.......2006-06-11

No doubt this is a fine recording. For those who remember Vengerov and Rostropovich's breath-taking Prokofiev/Shostakovich, however, this is rather disappointing.

As other reviewers pointed out, the tempo in this Beethoven is unusually slow, reminding me of Anne-Sophie Mutter's far from successful recordings of the same concerto. Vengerov's performance is not weird, though; his violin sound is dulcet without exaggerated and excessive rubatos; plus, in spite of, or precisely because of his leisurely tempo, i could relish the gracefulness of this representative masterpiece in the violin repetoire. The two romances are fine too. But I wish the orchestral support was more dynamic and powerful.

If you want to turn to other recordings of this concerto, I would recommend David Oistrakh (EMI)or Kyung Wha Chung (EMI). The former is a lengendary recording and coupled with the Bruch Violin Concerto no. 1. The latter live recording, also coupled with the Bruch concerto, is unsurpassable. It's Chung's second Beethoven recording and leaves nothing whatsoever to be desired. All three movements are gorgeously performed, and yet the second movement in particular is, as one reviewer in the Penguin Classical CD Guide wrote, one of the most beautiful tracks ever recorded. Along with Chung's Tchaikovsky/Mendelssohn CD (Decca), this CD will remain one of the finest in decades to come.

2 out of 5 stars Reverent? Yes. Exalting? Sadly, no........2006-02-12

I had high hopes for this one. Maxim Vengerov is perhaps the finest violinist of his generation; he is certainly among the finest of musicians. I watched his master class on Ovation, and his coaching of students through Mozart, Tchaikovsky, Ysaye made clear his depth of feeling for, and his understanding of, the music (also clear: his charm, his graciousness, his love of teaching). I respect and enjoy his recordings of the Brahms, the Tchaikovsky, the Bruch concertos, and others.

But this one's disappointing; it's a performance that I think Mr. Vengerov will come to regret. It's note-perfect; it's also dull. The world doesn't need another ponderous and reverent Beethoven Concerto. We want one that gives it life, that thrills us. Even the third movement - the rondo that should dance - is plodding. The largo, that should be exalting, is simply tiresome. The first movement, that should draw us into the music and hold us, exemplifies why so many dislike classical music; sitting through it feels like enduring a solemn duty.

The finest performance I know is this one (Doremi 7727):

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004X0NJ/qid=1139635782/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/002-3273165-0151249?s=classical&v=glance&n=5174

It's a 1945 broadcast by Jascha Heifetz with Artur Rodzinski and the NYPhSO (New York Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra, the predecessor of today's NYSO).

In my opinion it is the definitive recorded performance. Swiftly paced but heartfelt, played with a passion, an intensity and a profound understanding of the musical line that isn't approached by today's stars of the fiddle (nor even by Heifetz himself with Reiner for RCA). I listen to it often, and when I do I'm convinced it's the performance Beethoven heard in his mind, in his heart.

My thanks to Jacob Harnoy for issuing this unsurpassed performance and for achieving audio quality that makes it not just a listenable historic recording but a highly enjoyable one. I think it's a must-hear performance for all who love this work. (Another transfer I own - by Music & Arts - is thin and scratchy; this transfer by Doremi is full and rich.)

For those who find Heifetz too fleet (and if you think so, I think you're wrong!), try performances by Adolf Busch/Fritz Busch, Ginette Niveau/Hans Rosbaud, Yehudi Menuhin/Wilhelm Furtwangler, David Oistrach/Sixten Ehrling, Ida Haendel/Rafael Kubelik - performances that today's prodigies can only hope to grow to understand and equal. Or even try Fritz Kreisler/Leo Blech; it was Kreisler who begat the now-accepted modern tradition of performing the Beethoven reverently (i.e. slowly). But he carried it off, and did so compellingly!

And I can't close without commending another broadcast performance: Bronislav Huberman/Leo Barzin - an extraordinary performance by an extraordinary man. (All of these are available from Amazon.)

  8. Interview With William Kapell

Amazon.com essential recording

Blessed with transcendent technique and an affinity for big, bold Romantic works, William Kapell has been hailed as America's greatest homegrown pianist. This comprehensive collection of his complete recorded output, previously unreleased recordings, and broadcast tapes adds luster to a reputation that's become legendary since his tragic death in a plane crash at age 31. The earliest recordings, from the mid-1940s, bristle with raw energy and virtuosic flourishes tempered by an innate musicality that rises above mere display.

The disc coupling Khachaturian and Prokofiev concertos is charged with excitement; the Rachmaninoff pairing of the Paganini Variations and the Concerto No. 2 weds the Grand Romantic style to poetic lyricism; and an inspired Liszt group is charged with dynamic energy. Best may be the two Chopin discs: spontaneous, rhythmically flexible sonatas and mazurkas. The later recordings demonstrate the repose that comes with artistic maturity, and the "live" broadcasts reveal Kapell's warmth and spontaneity in concert. Splendid transfers help make this long-awaited set appealing to music lovers in general, as well as piano buffs. --Dan Davis

5 out of 5 stars Very touched.......2006-09-24

I wrote my doctoral dissertation on William Kapell (we share the same school, and my teacher was a student of his), and to still see the outpouring of admiration and love for Kapell's art is still very moving for me.

5 out of 5 stars In Memorium.......2005-10-29

I heard William Kapell play the Rachmaninov Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini with the fledgling Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in the late 1940's or very early 1950's. My only memory of the occasion is that I was enthralled. Kapell has held me in thrall ever since.

A few years later, in the middle 50's, I bought Kapell's recording of the same work, with Fritz Reiner and the Robin Hood Dell Orchestra (alias of The Philadelphia Orchestra). I still have that LP, though I wore it out long ago. It was the beginning of my musical education. But since 1998, we have had this wonderful box of reissues from the vaults of RCA. The sound is mostly excellent, considering the age of the monophonic originals. To this day, Kapell's Rachmaninov Rhapsody remains-in my opinion-the most impassioned, yet the most musical, reading of the piece ever recorded. No one had, or has, Kapell's combination of white-hot temperament, technical brilliance, and musical insight. We have had musical geniuses; technical wizards abound. It is the combination of these gifts, as Kapell possessed them in particular, married to his incendiary passion, that made him unique.

He was still learning, and he was learning at such an astounding rate! He had moved from Khachaturian to the most unforgettable Chopin B minor Sonata ever recorded in little more than a decade. His deep throated, noble, and articulate Bach has caused some to speculate that Glenn Gould might have found his inspiration in Kapell. One Gould biographer, and a New York critic, wrote that the reverse was true. The critic acknowledged the error, in print, noting that Kapell could not have been influenced by Gould's style since he had been dead for two years by the time of Gould's debut recital in New York City in 1955.

The lyrical side of romantic music is not what Kapell was or is known for, not his "style" as people remember him now. But listening to the lyrical music in this set shows a side of him that was, nevertheless, as real as any, and perhaps more revealing. It also gives us a notion of what we might have expected of William Kapell had he lived a normal span of years and played a normal variety of music. In a live performance, he plays Chopin's Nocturne, Op. 9, No. 1, with melting legato and exquisite timing: his innate sense about when to tug on the beat and when to surge forward makes the music breathe. His use of dynamic variety demands the greatest respect: at one point, the repetition of a melodic phrase is but a pale echo of its first statement. His tonal palette is no less wondrous. When a deep bass note suddenly appears, early in the A section of the ABA structure, it sounds-not loud nor quiet, not muffled nor distinct-but awesomely subterranean. Kapell begins the piece without much sustaining pedal, but in the B section, he subtly adds more and more. Then, when the A section returns near the end, the pedal disappears. This dramatic change in color-along with Chopin's change of key-seems like the parting of clouds. We are in the hands of two masters here, Chopin and Kapell. Kapell gave this performance in Carnegie Hall in February of 1945, when he was twenty-two years old.

In the Bach and Chopin works I've discussed, the steely, percussive tone that some speak of is nowhere to be heard. Rather, we hear a full, rich, and complex piano tone. In the Chopin Sonatas, the Debussy pieces, and the Schubert, Schumann, Mendelssohn, Debussy, and Albeniz, the sound Kapell produces is beautiful and varied.

He was a chamber musician of the first order, as his collaborations with Heifetz prove. (He was one of the very few musicians who had the force of personality to make Heifetz accompany HIM. And you can hear it.) And if you've never heard Rachmaninov's great Cello Sonata, played here with the grand Russian/German cellist Edmund Kurtz, you're in for a treat. There are several fine, modern stereo recordings, but this one is special. The piano part is very important-Rachmaninov did write it, after all-and Kapell is magnificent. This was Rachmaninov's next published work after the 2nd Piano Concerto, to give you an idea of its melodic grandeur. If there is a flaw here, it is that the piano is recorded too far back, relative to the cello.

Kapell died on October 30, 1953. He had just turned thirty-three. He played his last recital in Geelong, Australia, on the 22nd. It included the Chopin 2nd Piano Sonata which contains the well-known "Marche funèbre." That performance is included here, transferred from the original acetates. It is a great performance but very hard to listen to now, in light of what was to follow just over a week later. I am writing this one day short of the 52nd anniversary of Kapell's death. Had he lived until today, he would be younger than either Earl Wild or Ivan Moravec, both of whom are still making magnificent music. For those of us who love William Kapell's music, it is heartbreaking to consider, and fruitless. Thank Heaven we have recordings like the ones in this set. They are essential for any lover of good music.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless Souvenirs from a Rare Genius: Ave Atque Vale.......2005-10-28

During the last century we have had many tragic losses in the arts, often affecting men and women who are at the peak of their careers, shimmering with excellence, only to be silenced by death and all too often, by accidental death. The names of Anton Webern, Fritz Wunderlich, WG Sebald, Sylvia Plath, Dinu Lipatti, and so many others arise, but none as tragic as the death of William Kapell in 1953.

William Kapell is still considered by most as the America's greatest pianist, even fifty odd years after his death at the age of 31 in a plane crash. Those who heard him perform still rhapsodize over the magic he created. Those of us who are left with only recordings, such as this spectacular boxed set of all of his recordings, can only be uplifted by the man's genius, his extraordinary technical facility, and his intuitive, profound approach to the great works of music.

All styles of music were easily accessible to Kapell. Listen to the Mozart, Bach, Scarlatti, Paganini and Mendelssohn and try to imagine performances of more clarity and finesse than these. His Chopin is well represented in this set and glows with the uncanny power and tenderness that Chopin combined in his works. His works for solo piano by Rachmaninov and Shostakovich are the gold standard, and yet his Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mussorgsky and Liszt raise the bar for excellence that has since not been excelled. Joyously this set includes concerti including Prokofiev, Beethoven, Khachaturian, and Rachmaninov with the various conductors who saw Kapell's gifts and championed them.

The memory of this great artist is felt throughout the year, but never as acutely as on October 29th which marks the date of his cruel death. The world was brightened for too short a time by William Kapell, yet because of his recorded legacy his legend lives on. This is an impossibly fine box set of treasures. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, October 05

5 out of 5 stars Poetry without words.......2004-12-14

In listening ot this collection, I think of the other 20th century pianistic genius who died tragically young: Dinu Lipatti (d. 1950). Both men excelled at Chopin but each had a thoroughly individual sound. In addition to Chopin, the Rachmaninoff and Prokofiev are especially fine. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Somewhat unusual, but wonderful nevertheless.......2003-02-27

Zukerman's playing here is absolutely beautiful. Every note he plays seems perfectly, beautifully articulated. The tempos here are taken somewhat slower than customary, but I feel that this is the only way it could have been done: any faster, and Zukerman's supremely elegant, deeply expressive playing would have seemed rushed. It seems to me that most people think that the concerto is a virtuoso piece, which is the way it is normally performed, but here is revealed something profoundly deeper than the somewhat trivial flashiness that most are used to. The Chicago Symphony in some parts is a bit imprecise (at least, that is what I hear), but Barenboim does a fine job conducting, with a broad, expansive style that complements Zukerman's violin playing perfectly, I think. I feel most wonderful is the third movement. The Romances are not as profound as the Concerto, but they are played very well too, and complement the expansive, "romantic" (I put this in quotations because it seems every person has very different definitions of what is romantic) interpretation of the Concerto.

5 out of 5 stars Larger than life.......2000-11-24

Ludwig van Beethoven wrote only one violin concerto, and yet, the one he wrote definined the history of this intrument for all time. There is no other concerto that I am aware of that achieves the same level of vibration or transmission between composer, performer and listener. Mozart, Mendelssohn, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruch, Sibelius; all wonderful concertos in their own rights, but nothing like it compared to the Beethoven one. Here, the violin is not just making music or follwing a melody; it speaks, it talks, it resonates: It lives! Only here the instrument has a true language, a communication, a feeling of its own, and sometimes I think, especially in the adagio, it tells us a story, a story like the blues sometimes does, yes, I would almost say ths concerto has the blues! With Zukermann, Barenboim and the CSO as formidable interpreters, this concerto paints a picture of romantic music like nothing else before or since.

2 out of 5 stars Too spacious, off tempos, not pure enough for this concerto.......2000-06-13

I LOVE Beethoven's violin concerto, and seeing this CD with a great conductor, a great violinist, and a great orchestra, I thought it would be a good performance. Wrong! Zukerman's tempos are so terrible. Just listen to lazy solos at the beginning of the third movement. Barenboim's conducting doesn't help either, sounds too large and bombastic, even violent. One music critic said the violin sounds like it has "fat" on it. Well, I wouldn't go that far, but it doesn't sound refined and pure enough for Beethoven's concerto. I would recommend Itzhak Perlman's recording with Giulini on EMI, it has better-judged tempos, better conducting and orchestral accompaniment, more beauty, and more refined technique. In fact, it's the best version I have ever heard, so much more beautiful than the Zukerman recording. As for Zukerman, his performances of the Romances aren't bad, but I can't stand his solos in the violin concerto.

5 out of 5 stars Ahh.. Beethoven!.......1999-09-18

It doesn't get much more perfect than this. Zukerman, CSO, and Beethoven. I highly recommend this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly Magnificent Menuhin, with a Few Reservations.......2004-01-06

The recent trend toward classical box sets focusing on the performer instead of the composer (see my reviews of the various DG/Decca "Original Masters" sets) continues with EMI's new "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist." Sure EMI's past sets have showcased individual performances by Samson Francois, Eugen Jochum and Rudolf Kempe to name a few, but it was always under the heading of a given composer's works, and in the cases mentioned above, to Chopin's piano pieces, Bruckner's Symphonies and Strauss' Orchestral Works respectively. Therefore, this Menuhin collection is the first of EMI's "Budget Box Sets" to showcase a performer playing the works of a variety of composers.

As Menuhin was an EMI recording artist for an incredible 68 years (1931-99), his performances for the label number in the hundreds. With so much music from which to choose, this 10-disc set aims "to highlight some of those alternative versions, including recordings that have not been easily available since the days of LP and others that have never previously appeared on CD." Therefore, the obvious mainstream, easily attainable recordings are omitted here -- for example, the Beethoven/Mendelssohn VCs with Furtwangler, the Elgar VC with the composer conducting, and the Bruch/Mendelssohn VCs with Susskind and Kurtz.

However, a lot of this material has been on disc before on titles which the serious collector most likely already owns. Most of the Bach is currently available as part of the Bach "Budget Box Series" title. The Bruch, Mendelssohn, Brahms and Vivaldi VCs were all available in the now out-of-print 2CD EMI Seraphim series. The Elgar and the Walton are still available in the "British Composers" series. And perhaps most annoyingly, the previously unpublished Beethoven VC and Tchaikovsky "Serenade melancolique" (available as a single disc), and the Beethoven Romance No. 2 (available on an EMI Encore title) were both reissued just a few months back.

But let's focus on the positive, which are the other rare performances, the most significant being the never before reissued 1954 performance of Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 4 with John Pritchard and the Philharmonia. Other elusive recordings include Viuextemps and Paganini VCs with Fistoulari, Lalo and Saint-Saens works with Goossens, and excellent Berg and Bartok accounts with Boulez. Though I'm delighted at their inclusion, of lesser importance is a 1965 Bartok VC No. 2 with Dorati -- his mono EMI with Furtwangler and an earlier account with Dorati on Mercury Living Presence are far superior. Also, neither the Sibelius (Boult, 1955) nor Nielsen (Woldike, 1952) Concertos are truly Menuhin's cups of tea.

My last complaint has to do with the packaging. I know I'm being rather trite but it seems that EMI has taken the "slim" out of slim, paper-sleeved box sets with their latest batch of releases. Both this title and the new box of Liszt Orchestral Works by Masur are noticeably thicker than previous EMI sets featuring a similar number of discs. A minor point, but us serious classical collectors need every centimeter of space on our increasingly crowded CD shelves, not to mention the amount of wasted packaging.

Overall though, despite the fact that "Yehudi Menuhin - The Violinist" is not as essential a reissue as its counterparts in the "Original Masters" series, it is a delightful set that most collectors will thoroughly enjoy.

Anne-Sophie Mutter's Beethoven Concerto was recorded live at the final subscription concerts of Kurt Masur's long tenure as the New York Philharmonic's music director. The beautifully played orchestral part is a tribute to his leadership. Mutter plays with a silken tone and astonishing technical command of her instrument--absolute ease in the stratospheric tessitura of the solo part, and an amazing array of microdynamic adjustments that display the infinite variety of pianissimos at her command. She continually varies phrasing, so moments of ethereal beauty are often followed by finicky lapses into mannerisms. For all her instrumental brilliance, the results are curiously unmoving. The depths of the music's emotions remain elusive, her virtuosity veering perilously close to showboating at times. Similar comments apply to the two Romances, whose verdant songfulness needs more lively tempos and straightforward playing. Mutter's fans will want this disc. Others may turn to Heifetz, Perlman, Suk, or Grumiaux. --Dan Davis

3 out of 5 stars A Mix of Not so Hot and Better .......2007-06-21

Mutter's playing in the first movement is nearly enough to make one stop listening to the rest. "Finniky" and riven with "mannerisms" is one way to put it. Another would be that she simply ignores what Beethoven said as to how this should be played. Her work in the latter movements improves to between quite good and excellent. The Amazon review observation that the result is unmoving is right on.

5 out of 5 stars From A Different View.......2005-05-16

In Classical music, in which is never considered 'Popular' music in record stores and the general audience, Violin and Piano have been and are clearly the 'star' instruments. As a person who listens to Alternative music (Bjork, Tori Amos, Radiohead, Sigur Ros, David Bowie and others) more than Classical music, the details the previous reviewers were commenting on were useless to me.

Anne-Sophie Mutter and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg, for me, are the only known violinists that makes me want to listen to classical music. In this recording, Mutter is simply breathtaking and remakes the boring (to most people) 'great' concerto into a remarkable paradise of creativity.

This recording has made me dig deeper into classical music, yet her previous Beethoven recording made me feel nauseated and bored just the same as recordings by Joshua Bell and Itzhak Perlman.

5 out of 5 stars Mutter proves that Beethoven's music is Transcendental........2005-03-06

Mutter provides us with another stunning interpretation of the most transcendental Violin Concerto of all time. Unlike her contemporaries, she never looks at this concerto from a purely violinistic standpoint. As learned from Karajan, she looks only from an "eagle's eye view". So call it mannered, call it showboating, but you can never deny the transcendental depth, that she probes into this music. Simply stunning.

Thanks, Mutter!!

1 out of 5 stars Mutter's affectation.......2004-06-10

I am shocked that something as sublime and classical as Beethoven's violin concerto can be played in such an affected and self conscious a manner. Similar maanerisms can be found in her recordings of Kreutzer and Spring but to a lesser degree. Clearly, Mutter does not appear to understand what it means to observe fidelity to a score and to the spirit in which a work is written.

3 out of 5 stars Unmusical and unorthodox performance.......2004-03-30

It seems when all is said and done, Anne-Sophie Mutter's career will be divided into two periods. The first period, beginning with her discovery by Karajan, will find her as a brilliant soloist and musician as represented by the many recordings she made in this first half of her life. However, the second period will show Mutter as a narcissistic technician interested in self-aggrandizing performance that have little musical precedence or interpretive basis. This performance of Beethoven's Violin Concerto certainly belongs in the latter category.

Mutter's completely unmusical handling of the first movement is quite frankly rather disgusting. Of all the pieces to smear with mannered retards, scratchy tone, and vulgar phrasing, why the Beethoven Violin Concerto? Is Mutter so out-of-tune as a musician as to miss the basic constant rhythmic pulse that begins the concerto - the five strokes of the timpani, the heartbeat of the work - that pervades the whole movement? Is she unfamiliar with historical performances practices, the difference between high-classicism and high-romanticism (if that is even what you can call her playing), and basic violin pedagogy? This is a shocking gratuitous performance that represents exactly how not to play this concerto. Tempos fluctuate throughout the entirety of the first movement with no contextual or musical basis, peppered with bizarre dynamic fluctuations, single-handedly destroying Beethoven's clear rhythmic and vocal intentions. Mutter refuses to yield to the orchestra in the various passages where the violin accompanies, attacking her instrument with vehement resistance. And she does all this with the most unflattering sound, coaxing from her instrument some truly bizarre sounds. And all this done over the course of an excruciating 27 minutes.

The second and third movements fare somewhat better, if only by comparison, but Mutter continues to apply her own brand of interpretive graffiti over the entire Largretto, plagued by intonation problems and rather coarse-toned playing. The energetic Rondo is probably the best part of the concerto (perhaps in no small part because the end is near) due mainly to Masur's stronger framework, which forces the capricious Mutter to work within some structure. All in all, this is a pretty vile release from an artist who seems so bored with her repertoire that she must mutilate it in order to keep herself intellectually and musically satisfied. That the listener will find the same satisfaction is hard to believe.

It is a shame, really, that this performance was so bad, for it was taken from Kurt Masur's last subscription concert with the New York Philharmonic. All the more troubling considering the second half of the program, a performance of Beethoven's "Eroica," was phenomenal. Masur showed uncharacteristic fervor in his conducting and the Philharmonic responded in tow with a performance that hung fire. Not only was the energy palpable, but the mutual respect both orchestra and music director shared for each other was moving. Why that performance was not captured, yielding to this arrogantly unmusical account of the Violin Concerto will remain a mystery only Deutsche Grammophon can answer.
