I appreciated the input of the previous reviewr, but ther eare a couple of items, not having to do with this particular recording that I have to add an addendum. the 7-string bass viol (or viola da gamba) is NOT an ancestor of the cello, or any instruments in the violin family. Historical evidence, as well as extensive research show the viola da gamba family was connected to the development of the lute and early guitars in Europe 70 years before the fist violin family instruments begin to appear. Please note, I am NOT referring to vielles or any other precursors of bowed string instruments in Europe. A simple web search will yield many other viola da gamba soloists, many of whom are exeptional performers.

Poor Interpretations of French Baroque Viola Pieces.......2005-10-23

French Baroque is not a very well known style in performance circles either by the performers themselves or audiences. In particular, viola performances are probably the least known or heard. The viola da gamba is the cello's predecessor and prominent in both English and French Early-Mid Baroque. The instrument has greater range and resonance with 7 strings. There are probably fewer than 300 professional players performing on this instrument today. There are probably 4-5 who are the best and the musicians here are not even close to the talent of the undisputed and unmatched French master violist, Jordi Savall: there is absolutely no comparison.

The 'Sonnerie' here is lifeless and completely at odds with the meter. The violas are groaning in slow agony as opposed to whirling feverishly and spiraling towards a heaven-like ecstacy. The rest of the pieces are equally pathetic in their execution. Listen to a sample of Savall's performance of this piece on the soundtrack to 'All The Mornings of The World' and the music will simply explain itself for you to make your descisions in buying French Baroque. He also has the best performance of Lully's 'Les Concerts Royaux' that I have ever heard: this man is nothing less than a prodigy in his art of the viola and his direction of French Baroque. I have the utmost respect for this man as an artist: he is truly a living legend.

For French Baroque in general and especially for Marin Marais or other viola composers, there is no other performer/conductor than Jordi Savall worth listening to. Especially for viola, his closest contenders are still motionless on the ground while he is flying circles in the stratosphere: there is simply no comparison and his virtuosity is exponentially superior to every one else's. Find out for yourselves and you will soon be agreeing with what I say. Good luck in your search for great music!

delightful, delicate, delicious.......2001-08-15

I was at a friend's place once and she had some lovely music on. I asked her what it was and she said Marais. I said Ma-who? I said I've got to get me some of this! After pouring over about five or six recordings I could find at a local music store I decided on this one, mainly because on the cover Braumann looks like the quintessential viola da gamba player!

Now I'm not usually one to be reviewing French baroque music. Though a HUGE fan of the music of Bach, esp. the cantatas (of which you can't beat the more recent releases by Suzuki and the Bach Collegium Japan), I'm more the fan of choral music, Wagner and progressive rock! But this is simply beautiful and well played music by two of it's more celebrated interpreters. Plus it's four whole suites on one disc, which makes this recording not only a gem, but a bargain as well!

Music of an early 17th c. French genius brought to life.......2002-01-21

Marin Marais was a contemporary of Jean Baptiste Lully and played the viol da gamba for Lully in the opera and court orchestra's of the Sun King. He was a student of the gamba master St. Colombe and a rather romanticized account of this relationship can be seen on the video "Tu le Matin du Monde." The instrument which he played, the viole de gamba, belongs to the same family of instruments as the double string bass, only it is small enough to be held between the legs and it has gut frets. Some gamba's have simpathetic strings though it sounds like Mr. Quintana's gamba for this disc doesn't. The playing is still marvelous though. Mr. Quintana is from Argentina and studied in Switzerland. He is accompanied on this disc by Dolores Costoyas on theorbo (a type of long-necked lute) and Attilio Cremonesi playing the clavecin (the generic term for a small keyboard instrument, like a harpsichord.) The gamba is an intimate sounding instrument so you may have to turn the volume up a bit to hear all the nuances that this ensemble packs into this disc. The clavecin is very much in the background but the theorbo playing at times takes some of the lime-light, as in track 18, the Rondeau from the suite in a minor. This number in particular has a very jazzy feel to it. Although the playing is very affected throughout the disc remains relaxed and not heavy handed or stuffy. Mr. Quintana's ornamentation is both studied and spontaneous. He makes good use of the bow in places to produce a vibrato effect that cannot be had on the gambe naturally because of the frets. While I will not say that the playing is perfect to our technologically tainted ears, what is perfection to a music that historically always had some improvisation to it? Track 8 ,another bouncy Rondeau, makes up for this. This is a good disc for someone wanting to explore the other masters of the 17th and 18th century as well as for the collector.
