Manuel Barrueco is one of the best guitarists I've ever heard. Listen to his own arrangement of Albeniz's Suite Española and you'll have trouble believing it's only two hands on one guitar. But Barrueco doesn't use his technique to show off. He's a solid musician, as expressive in Bach as in Villa- Lobos. He also makes transcriptions that respect the origins of the music. This is a wide-ranging guitar collection, but all the music is worth hearing, especially in performances like these. The disc is one of the best bargains among all guitar recordings, and Vox's recordings still sound like a guitar. --Leslie Gerber

Not much else really to say about this. It is a collection of brilliant interpretations and the guitar has the most amazing sound I've ever heard on a recording. You will find yourself almost spiritually bound to share this recording with any classical guitar playing friends and aficionados.

I was browsing Amazon, shopping for gifts, and when I listened to the snippets of this, I couldn't resist ordering it for myself. It's a 3CD set of beautiful, varied music played by a brilliantly skilled and sensitive master. Barrueco has an extraordinary touch that seems perfect for each piece, from Bach to Paganini to Villa-Lobos. Anyone who likes classical guitar would treasure this set.

The "cool school" of guitar playing.......2006-10-26

This three CD collection is a reissue of Cuban born virtuoso Manuel Barrueco's early Vox LPs, recorded in the late 1970s to early 1980s. Included in this set is his stunning performance of selections by Spanish composers Isaac Albéniz and Enrique Granados. This 1978 Albéniz/Granados recording is perhaps the greatest example of what I call the "cool school" of guitar playing, eschewing color and warmth in favor of restraint, taste, and note perfect execution. One complaint: in this reissue VoxBox inexplicably spread the Albéniz/Granados selections over three CDs.

Very fine collection of special works........2006-03-04

In spite of the several references to Mozart (some of us get tired of him), I found this collection to be unique, innovative and very well performed. I find myself playing it over and over with growing enjoyment.

Truly UNIQUE Classical Guitar.......2001-12-14

I first heard the Guitar Concerti Nos. 1 & 2 on an old cassette tape from the Musical Heritage Society. This compilation from Philips Classics presents not only these but the Concerto No. 3 as well.

Additionally, there are several other Giuliani works for Guitar & Orchestra, solo Guitar pieces, and the "Variazioni Concertanti", a duet with Celedonio Romero.

These compositions are rarely performed or recorded. Giuliani's works are UNIQUE among the genre of Classical Guitar composition... reflecting as they do, that transitional period between the "Classic" and the "Romantic".

Any devotee of Classical Guitar music who is not aware of Giuliani's work, is truly missing something!!!

I'm not an expert, just a fan of classical music

A great classical guitar CD set.......2000-05-06

I am a fan of guitar music, and tried out this 2 CD set after hearing it on radio. The music is very good and the guitar is accompanied by a complete orchestra (none other than the immortal Sir Neville Marriner and the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields).

But to be sure, this is classical guitar, and not folk guitar music. I enjoyed this CD very much, but it is not like Spanish guitar or the works of John Williams (the guitar player, not the movie composer).

However, if you are a fan of the guitar, as I am, it will be long before you tire of this CD.

Mozart never composed for the guitar, but. . . ........2000-03-11

Giuliani sure must have studied Mozart because, if you like Mozart(and who doesn't), you will like Giuliani. These CDs are a good bargain and a pleasant introduction to the music of Mauro Giuliani. The recording is relatively old(1975-1978 ADD) but the performances are fine(Pepe Romero in my mind is the best in the world today) and so is the sound.

Sonata for Viola.......2006-12-12

I only downloaded the viola sonata on iTunes, but I'm quite sure that it is played on a viola rather than violin (see review below). It sounds like a viola, and I checked the low notes in the last variation and they are low Cs (compared them against my viola). The playing is spectacular. I like this piece with orchestra, but it has an entirely different flavor w/ guitar that is very nice.

I haven't heard the other pieces on the disc, but I'd say it's worth it for the Viola Sonata alone.

Enchanting.......2000-08-14

Although modest in scale, these lovely compositions are highly lyrical and passionate. The Duetto Amoroso is one of my favorites. The recording is good. Scott St. John is a first prize winner of the Alexander Schneider competition, and he plays a 1717 Stradivarius which was loaned to him after he won the 1988 Canada Council Competition. Wynberg provides good accompaniment, but the focus of these compositions is on the violin. I wish that the Gran Viola Sonata was performed on the instrument for which it was composed. Otherwise a great CD.

Brazilian delight.......2007-06-05

This CD can be recommended as much for its sheer variety as anything else. I imagine that few CDs contain music for such an unusual combination of instruments all written by the same composer. Villa-Lobos was clearly fascinated by the sounds produced by this kind of interaction. Until recently I was only familiar with Choros No. 1 which, together with the etudes, is well-known to guitarists. I had not expected the remaining choros to be so different and yet to share, each in its own way, the strange - to my western ears - rhythms and harmonies which reflect the melange of cultural backgrounds in Brazil. Villa-Lobos wrote 14 choros [or 16, depending on which authority is to be believed] of which only the first 12 appear to be available so far on CDs. It seems that two were lost so maybe, if they exist, two more remain to be recorded. Perhaps one of the more enterprising record companies will oblige.

Works that you must listen !!!.......2005-04-18

The "Choros" is one of the most renowned series of works by Heitor Villa Lobos. These 12 works were conceived during the most advanced period of the composer: from 1920 to 1929.The Choros are strongly influenced by Debussy, Ravel and specially by Stravinsky. But despite these influences we can feel that these compositions are the result of a very personal genius. Influenced by the neo-classical music his next series of compositions, the Bachianas Brasileiras, are much more conventional than these experimental works. I really believe that among these 12 works we can find the most extraordinary works of this outstanding musician. As a Brazilian I can really say without hesitation that I'm proud of works like that . And I'm very happy that after decades we have a new recording of the so called " Chamber Choros" ( "Chôros de Camera" as we say here in Brazil). I must say some words about the old recording that was done in the seventies in Rio de Janeiro with some of the most important musicians of the former Brazilian capital like Paulo Moura, Noel Devos, Jose Botelho and Murilo Santos. This recording appeared in CD by Chant du Monde , but has been absent from catalog for a long time . Now we have the opportunity to listen for this fantastic compositions in less idiomatic readings, but in a fantastic sound quality and with really excellent instrumentalists .
What is a "Choros"? "Choros" is a kind of improvisation , normally played at night. This is part of a urban folklore ,more specifically of the city of Rio de Janeiro, that was a very sophisticated cultural center at the beginning of the century, and has to do with a high quality of some musicians that used to play complicated operas at the Opera Theater , and just for fun , at the end of the night, in a pleasant place , they used to play together some improvisations. This is clearly the mood of works like the Choros 2, 3 , 4 and 7. Choros No 1 is a popular Choros, less sophisticated than the others. Choros No 5 is one nostalgic and impressionist piano music and the wonderful Choros No 6 is a Symphonic Phantasy about Brazilian themes. It is pure tropical , "carioca" ( that means- from Rio de Janeiro), authentic .
The musical result of this CD is so interesting that I'm very anxious to listen to a Volume 2 ,with the other 5 Choros. Performances like these rend justice to these wonderful compositions . The classical catalogue can't be deprived of this works. They are fundamental to place Villa Lobos among the most important musicians of the Twentieth Century.

This is the perfect album to put on for dinner with guests. Or, if you're doing something around the house and you want to be uplifted without listening to something too engaging. It exudes charm and sophistication, with moments of tenderness and compassion if you choose to listen closely. The playing is, of course, of the highest standard. Don't hesitate on this one. Add it to your collection.

Lackluster.......2007-06-19

There are, sadly and oddly, not that many compositions for guitar and piano. The two most popular instruments are difficult to play together, I suppose, since the guitar is so much softer in volume than a piano. This is one of the few CD's I've ever found with duets.

The musicians seem capable enough. Perhaps it's the material, or the acoustics, but this recording just seems not terribly exciting. The compositions are lackluster. I can hardly hear the guitar when the piano plays. Can't recommend it.

A Must have collections overview of musical gems.......2001-06-10

The Harmonia Mundi label's new classical collection gives excerpts from its new series of chamber and classical music. It is a wonderful buffet of the full length Cds; one of which I am listening too as I write this (Shubert Piano Trio no.1.) These cds are a treat. They are beautiful. The collection includes music from vivaldi, mozart and even prokovief. Its a collection of intimate and expertly played peices that are not usually found together or at all on such inexpensive CDS. For example Bachs Anna Magdelna Notebook, Correlli concertos and Medieval Banquet music are all played with passion and professional acumen. The quality of the CDs themselves is excellent and only adds to the deeper enjoyment of these luscious and lyrical masterpieces.
