Listen to this album!.......2005-06-09

I have only listened to a few some of the songs on this album, but it is evident to me that this is an exceptional album and as it has not yet been reviewed, I want to give it 5 stars so that others will know this one is worth listening to. Holzmair has a beautiful voice and a genuine feel for the music. There is nothing affected here, which to me is important in lieder. And Imogen Cooper's accommpaniment is exceptional. What a perfectly matched pair! (they even look great together; see the inside of the accompanying booklet). Try listening to track 18 "Spring Night". What eagerness in his voice and in the piano accompanyment!

"Over the gardens, through the breezes....I heard the travelling birds returning,...hearlding the scents of spring;...down below, the flowers are already opening....I could rejoice, I could weep: I cna hardly believe it is true! The old miracles worked again by the light of the moon...And the stars say it, and the grove whispers in its sleep and the nightingales sing it: she is yours! she's yours!"

Or listen to track #11 (Moonlight Night)...."And my soul spread its wings and stretched them wide and flew through the quiet land as if flying home.....". I only know Schubert (and why he never set Eichendorff to music only God knows as Eichendorff was apparently a contemporary and his poetry is as well suited to Schubert's ouvre as any) but am investigating Schumann. The other lieder I am not familiar with but I believe this CD is a great way to begin.

Hans Hotter is a wonder. The voice has a remarkable agility and breadth of expression, that has justly earned him the admiration of several generations. He is an expert at chiaroscuro, sometimes lightening the tone, as in Ständchen, while in Loewe's "Edward", he adopts a minatory timbr that is chilling. It is well known that Hotter was THE Wotan of the post-war years, but he is not inferior to any lieder singer. These songs are mini-dramas in his expert hands. Testament is quite generous with these re-issues of classic singers, packing 27 songs onto this disc. It is a recording worth having.

A great Hotter anthology.......2002-06-19

This compilation comes from 1966 and 1968, when the experienced Hotter had a high level of refinement. Very few people have been so succesful in fusing elements of both singer and actor into one entity as Hotter could. This CD is more proof of that. To a newcomer, his voice will sound quite dark and rich, but has vibrance. His characterizations are intense, but not exaggerated. And amazingly, both these elements are completely integrated. The works represented here need no introduction - if any of them cannot convince with Hotter singing, there is little alternative. To compare Hotter with Fischer-Dieskau is neither simple nor right, it is really up to one's taste. Yet the CD is also good for someone new to lieder. The recording quality is exceptional, even for the mono selections (about half the disc).

The Essential Coloratura Album.......2007-02-16

The artistry of Rita Streich presented in this multi-disc set represents an art that in all likelihood would not return: the Viennese school of coloratura and lyrical singing.
Together with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Rita Streich studied voice with Maria Ivogun, a great coloratura soprano of the German-Austro school. Together with her colleague, Streich excelled in the Viennese-style coloratura singing. This album presents her wide range of repertoire from Austro-German to French to Italian opera; from classical opera to romantic Strauss operetta; from lieder to folk songs.
What this album does NOT include is Streich's Russian repertoire, some thing that, owing to her maternal descent, she was most adept at.
Unlike Schwarzkopf, Streich owned a voice that is out-right lyrical. It is even lighter, even more agile, even more silvery, though not as forceful as Schwarzkopf's on demand. Listen to her delightful "Bastien und Bastienne", her Mozart concert arias and enjoy her highly articulated, musically refined delivery. It is the exemplary Viennese singing. Her soubrettes as well as lyrical heroines are nothing short of being superb.
Not being as internationalised a singer as Schwarzkopf, Streich nonetheless was a representative figure of Viennese coloratura singing. Some times I would even feel that her coloratura is even more superior to that of the great dramatic coloratura of the 20th century, Joan Sutherland, again a very much more internationalised singer than Streich.
If you are undergoing voice training, this box set is essential.

Admirably performed and recorded, but ..........2006-05-29

The songs of Hans Pfitzner (1869-1949) should be substantially better known than they are. No-one would allege that they match Richard Strauss's or Hugo Wolf's best word-setting - in any event Pfitzner, like Strauss and Mahler, attained more distinctive results with voice and orchestra than in Lieder - but they have great beauties of their own. The trouble is that these beauties tend to be a bit same-ish; the typical Pfitzner Lied lacks the ferocious vividness by which Wolf made poem after poem his own, just as it lacks Strauss's melodic splendor. Even the shortest of the works included here will often sound like recitatives from an otherwise unwritten opera, thanks partly to Pfitzner's symphonic rather than epigrammatic outlook, and his habit of ignoring his texts' strophic implications. But sometimes Pfitzner achieves complete success: in IST DER HIMMEL DARUM he manages a Gemuetlichkeit worthy of Brahms, while at the other extreme ABENDROT is full of Wagnerian passion. Even the weaker items are well worth hearing, and should at least be allowed the occasional place in recitals.

Now and then Pfitzner songs have turned up on record, generally with less than first-rate artists, on obscure German labels. Indispensible to any Lieder buff are the prewar Pfitzner recordings by that superb baritone Gerhard Huesch, which carry the imprimatur of the composer himself at the keyboard.

In 1982, when Orfeo first released this collection, Fischer-Dieskau revealed his age only with some slight blustering in his upper range. The rest of his vocalism on this CD is almost as refined as it was back when those postwar Bach cantata and Passion recordings of his first made music-lovers realize that one of Germany's greatest modern singers had emerged. Hartmut Hoell matches F-D insight for insight, fully in command of Pfitzner's pianistic writing (which tends to be more elaborate and often more interesting than his vocal lines); while the sound quality is flawless, with a perfect balance between singer and instrumentalist. F-D even contributes a (very good, Wyndham-Lewis-style) cover painting of Pfitzner himself.

BUT ... who was the pinhead who decided to issue this full-price recital of rarities without either English translations OR ANY BOOKLET NOTES IN ANY LANGUAGE? Orfeo simply provides the original German texts, with the names of their authors. Biographical data about Pfitzner: zilch. Comments on the songs: zilch. Indications as to where these songs came in Pfitzner's career, why he set the poems he did set, and so forth: zilch. (As it happens they are nearly all early works; Pfitzner, like Strauss, confined most of his song-writing to the years before 1914.) Hints as to how F-D and Hoell came to explore this elusive, and not always immediately rewarding, material in the first place: zilch. Can anyone imagine Naxos being so slack? No way. Yes, it's nice to know that the booklet was "printed by Johannes Alt GmbH", but some of us would rather read about Pfitzner's creativity than about Orfeo's production processes.

This is the type of purchaser-be-damned approach which, during the late 1990s, helped ruin the whole mainstream classical record industry. Composer and performers alike deserve much better.
