Pinnock - pretty good Haydn, but not the best.......2006-12-08
As I type this review, I am listening to the recording of Symphony #52 from this set.
Earlier today, I listened to these recordings of Symphonies 51 and 43 as well. I have owned many of these recordings since they first came out. In fact, this is the first recording of 43 I had ever heard, but the symphony never grabbed me until I heard a different recording (conducted by Aadland on Imp classics, hard to find). Pinnock races through it and misses a lot of the character and the sense of inevitability that this symphony has to offer. The recording of 51 is better with Derek Solomons, more character in the horn solo slow movement (though I have some reservations about that set as well!).
Overall, it seems that Pinnock just doesn't dig deeply enough into these wonderful symphonies. Yes, they are fast and lively. But there's not enough articulation, oomph, depth to make this the set to own.
My favourite set of symphonies.......2006-08-13
This recording is one of my "desert island discs". I have listened to it over and over again over the last four years and I am still finding new and exciting things in this music. Haydn's symphonies are very important to me and I feel very at home in this music. Why? I am not sure. This is musical music - music which celebrates music. I realise that this doesn't make much sense. Mozart's symphonies are always very clever and always full of Mozart's brilliance and superb sense of style and form. Haydn's symphonies aren't "obvious" - they require a little more effort for someone like me to appreciate, and this is their strength - once this music is appreciated, it stays that way!
Mr. Trevor Pinnock, directing The English Concert [on period instruments] from his harpsichord, provides us with a wide window into these works - 19 symphonies, over 6 CDs. The playing is very attractive and colourful. The wind and brass players are in fine form, particularly the horn players. The strings have that transparency and incisiveness which period violins, violas, 'cellos and basses and original styled bows bring to 18th century music.
I can imagine a different approach and interpretation of some of these works, but I cannot imagine anyone doing it better than Pinnock and his ensemble.
If you're a fan of the "Sturm und Drang" style, although much of this music is far from stressful or stormy!, you will probably enjoy comparing these symphonies with those of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
Unpleasant Recording Spoils Set.......2005-10-13
Note added later: I now urge potential buyers to consider as an alternative the Nimbus set with Fischer, symphonies 40-54. Wonderful performances with recording that goes much further in capturing some of the beauty of a violin - without the disadvantage of earlier harsh digital sound.
Amazon does us all a huge favor by allowing us to voice our thoughts away from the endless commercial shilling of the music industry. Yes, not everybody agrees all the time, but it is not difficult to determine if reviewers hate an artist and just have it in for her or him, or simply find fault with a performance or its engineering. I happen to admire and respect both the conductor of this CD issue and his band.
Since what I heard put me in a minority of one - to judge by those who took the time to read my review - I replayed several sides of this CD again the other day on a friend's far superior system. I should add that together we have over 100 years of listening to recorded sound, and my collection goes back to the 1890's. So we have some fair grasp of this medium. After less than a minute of the first CD, he turned to me, and winced. Moreover we could not find any improvement in the sound on any of the other sides.
As for the other reviewers glorious reviews - be open-minded; trust yourself to take a few minutes and compare Pinnock's band in the opening to Symphony 48, Maria Theresia, to Janigro's group on Bach Guild, ATM-CD-1495. Afterall, it's your money. One performance sounds imperial, and the music sounds most appropriate for an Empress.
Original instruments do sound very nice - as anyone who has heard live one of the better Cremona masterpieces can attest. And those violins were built long before Haydn was even born! Don't believe all "original violins" must sound like they do in this recording.
Again, for a far better sounding CD issue do yourself a huge favor - try the budget priced Bach Guild CD of the Sturm and Drang symphonies conducted by Janigro. Again. ATM-CD-1495. It has a superior performance of the Maria Theresia, #48 in a robust C Major.
And just to be fair - Janigro's recording of the Boyce symphonies is disappointing, whereas Pinnock's is excellent. Perhaps there is something to leading in music of your own culture.
The absolute best set of the Sturm and Drang symphonies you will ever find.......2005-08-18
I didn't buy this boxed set, but aquired these wonderful discs one by one. I love the whole set, but I bought the one with symphonies 35,38,39,59 first. It is my favorite of the six. That one is really one of those desert island discs. There is such a rhythmic drive and electricity in volume one that I hardly ever hear in classical music. If you're kind of feeling down, these symphonies by the English Concert, will definitely bring you out of the doldrums. Volumes 2-6 are equally as well played, but I personally enjoy Volume one better. Trevor Pinnock is superb as usual. He's definitely one of the greatest conductors of the baroque and classical periods. I would like to see him venture into the romantic period to see how good he would do with that style. The sound quality of this set is just superb. Everything sounds crystal clear in these recordings. If you don't like these performances, check your pulse because I think your dead.
Lively and energetic Haydn - many "surprise" gems here.......2005-03-12
I find myself turning to this modest box of 6 CDs containing 19 mostly little-known Haydn symphonies far more often than to any other Haydn symphony recordings on my shelf.
The complete cycles I own are certainly great achievements that I would never want to be without. Dorati's magnificent complete cycle (see Amazon asin # B0000042DP) is a classic that has stood the test of time. Brilliant classics has ressurected the Adam Fischer cycle from the Nimbus bankruptcy (see Amazon asin # B00006GA50), though the price is now much higher than it was when Brilliant Classics originally released it in 2002. For some of the more famous symphonies, like the London Symphonies, there are many stellar paerformances, such as the Colin Davis/Concertgebouw recordings available on 2 Philips Duo offerings.
But none of the above, or other unspecified recordings, hold a candle to these Pinnock recordings when it comes to an all around enjoyable musical experience. The Minuets have a swaggering quality that is intoxicating. You'd think Haydn invented dance music. Who needs the Strauss family? The Allegros have vitality about them that brings you to the edge of your seat. And the slower movements have phenomenal penetrating depth and wide ranging dynamics one would never expect from Haydn.
And unlike some critics, I don't think there is anything "unfaithful" to the score about these readings. Pinnock doesn't resort to Stokowski-like modifications or liberalities to make the music come alive. What does come across is that all of the musicians appear to be having fun. And when musicians are having fun like this, you do too.
And for the bargain basement price, this a must have.
Not a Haydn fan? Get this set and you will be.

Exploring the Haydn Symphonies -- Nos. 42,43,44.......2006-07-25
Between 1776 and 1772, Haydn composed 17 symphonies in which he took the form's emotional and musical content to a new level. Of this group, six symphonies, a high proportion, are in a minor key, leading some commentators to attach the label sturm und drang (storm and stress) to Haydn's compositions of these years. The term is appropriate for some but not all of the symphonies of this highly productive time in Haydn's life. The three symphonies from this period on this CD include one great work, the "Trauer" symphony, number 44 to which the sturm und drang label applies, but it includes two contemporaneous symphonies, nos. 42 and no. 43 to which this label is inappropriate. Symphonies 43 and 44 are relatively well known and frequently recorded while symphony no. 42 is a rarity.
On this CD, Roy Goodman conducts the Hanover Band on period instruments and uses a harpsichord continuo. The recording dates from the early 1990s and is on the low-priced Helios label. I have been greatly impressed by Goodman's performance of the Haydn symphonies, and this CD is among his finest.
The Symphony no 42 in D major was new to me, and it deserves to be heard. It is an expansive, ambitious work of pure, nonprogrammatic music. Haydn took the trouble to attach adjectives to his directions for three of the four movements. The opening moderato e maetsoso is a lengthy, large-scaled movement with a spacious opening theme, and great dynamic and thematic contrasts, with repeated flourishes for the horns. It features a false recapitulation, as does symphony no 43, in the midst of the development section. The next movement, andantino e cantabile, is also extended in character as Haydn develops and embellishes two lengthy flowing themes. This lovely movement was used to illustrate the intricacies of sonata form in an early treatise on composition. The minuet is short and based on simple melodic lines, in contrast to the complexity of the first and second movements. The finale, marked scherzando e presto, is the first fully-developed rondo in a Haydn symphony. It features strings and winds alternating and sudden stops.
Symphonies 43 and 44 are much better known than no. 42. The 43 symphony in E -flat major has the nickname "Mercury" for reasons that remain obscure. It has become one of my favorite Haydn symphonies and is beautifully performed on this CD. This work was probably used as an accompaniment to a play at Esterhaza, but regardless, the work remains, as H. Robbins Landon described it, "a chamber symphony par excellence." It is an exquisite, elegant, and sophisticated example of Haydn's art. The work opens quietly with a three-note motif which Haydn expands into a movement of great contrasts between intimacy and power. The andante is the longest movement in the work and also features a three-note theme which becomes the basis for a long melody. It is predominantly scored for the strings. The movement is in three-part form with a short dramatic middle section separating two lyrical sections. The minuet also is based upon a three-note phrase, giving a great deal of thematic continuity to the symphony, and the trio in the strings has a poignant quality. The rondo finale is based upon a rustling, ambiguous opening theme which develops into a lengthy, vigorous close.
The "Trauer" (mourning) symphony, No. 44 in E minor is likely the greatest of Haydn's six sturm und drang minor key symphonies. The work includes stormy, angry, and angular writing and complex counterpoint. It also includes a serene, contrasting third movement. Much of the work is in the form of statment and response. A portion of the orchestra plays an opening phrase which is echoed and expanded upon by other instruments. The first movement, allegro con brio, is based upon repeated use of this pattern followed by extensive development of the theme in counterpoint. The second movement of the Trauer is the minuet, which is also contrapuntal, with an opening statement of the phrase and a canonic response. It remains in the tragic minor key with the exception of the lyrical trio. The slow movement of the Trauer is of great noblility and serenity and serves as a respite from the passions of the remaining three movements. This movement always reminds me of an air from a Gluck opera. The theme is mostly in the strings with the winds entering in force at climactic moments. The work comes to a severe close in the minor key in the rapid finale in which a statement-response structure of the opening theme again gives way to contrapuntal treatment.
This CD offers an excellent opportunity to hear Haydn's symphonic mastery, in works both familiar and unfamiliar.

Worth acquiring at any price.......2007-02-23
Some say Haydn's ingenuity is even greater than that of Mozart's or Beethoven's. When listening to this brilliantly played set, I find myself becoming a convert of the belief. Haydn experimented with a variety of musical tools in these works. Surprising twists and turns are abundant. You will hear chamber serenade, harpsichord run, or violin solo in the most unexpected spots. Instruments are sometimes played in very unconventional ways resulting in exotic sounds - similar to what Berlioz and Mahler did later. Structure is toyed with in many symphonies, especially in the early ones.
In Austro-Hungrarian Orchestra, Adam Fischer finds an all-in chef's toolkit needed to cook these delightful ingredients. The woodwinds not only sing but also coo and meow. Strings melt your heart to a puddle with their exquisite pianissimo. Horns are expressive yet stylish. The whole orchestra knows how to knock themselves out when the music calls for it. The overall timbre is unlike any other orchestra I've ever heard, period or conventional. It's bright, edgy and folksy at the same time. It sounds like a virtuosic chamber ensemble rather than an orchestra except in the big symphonies. I believe the closest thing to their sound is Vienna Philharmonic playing Johann Strauss waltzes. Throw in a hint of gypsy flavor then it would be even closer.
Because this is a massive 33-CD set, there are inevitably a few imperfections. In a handful of spots the strings are not perfectly together. Adding to this, some of the violins have very distinctive tones which don't blend well with others when the music gets energetic. As to the engineering, some of the symphonies recorded early in the cycle are captured with too much reverberation, especially some London symphonies which sound soft-edged. But let me assure you the vast majority of the 100 plus symphonies have been recorded with crystal-clear brilliance.
One may find more sophisticated and smooth playing in some conventional performances (Colin Davis and Jochum) or crisper articulations in some period recordings (Bruggen and Pinnock). But Fischer and his hand-picked orchestra deliver more character and expressiveness than in any Haydn performances I've ever heard. Harnoncourt comes close but Fischer's set has more smiles. And his orchestra has the devilish ability to accommodate any mood Haydn's score throws at them - whether it's charm, wit, panache, or pathos. Their playing in slow movements is simply inimitable.
This set will be the source of joy for many Haydn lovers whether they are beginners just opening up the treasure chest or seasoned collectors with many other Haydn CDs. According to others' opinions, it compares favorably to Dorati's box, the only other complete set which I have not heard.
One final point - I wrote the review without the consideration of the price. In other words, this set is worth acquiring at any price.
Some of the finest modern Haydn.......2006-09-08
This set of Adam Fischer's traversal of Haydn's symphonies is perhaps the jewel of the entire series. After over a decade of Haydn performing and recording most of early bugs in recording venue and playing together had long been resolved, and the group as here constituted plays with great confidence and tremendous brio. This is a vital selection, too, containing some of Haydn's very best symphonies, worthy to stand with the greatest of all. And a few, the serious "Sturm und Drang", have the most passionate and serious symphonic music Haydn composed.
The general level of playing is very high, especially among the soloists, but there are some lapses which can cause a raised eyebrow, however, these are not so common as to prove bothersome. I prefer this groups easy way with Haydn to the slightly frentic quality too often popping up with historic groups efforts in these pieces, a tendency made worse by their notoriously anemic string sections, at least as realized on the digital medium. I am delighted to report that Fischer's orchestra of 'modern instruments' (A funny phrase when you realize some of the violins used may pre-date Haydn!) capture almost all of the delightful color contrasts and lightness found in Haydn when played by original groups without thinning out and sacrificing beauty of ensemble.
In comparisions with my admitted ridiculously excessive Haydn collection I was especially pleased at how well the performances on this Cd set stood up to many of my all-time favorite performances in this music. Moreover, they almost always have a little bit different take on one movement or another in every work, offering the delight of a new window onto this most evergreen of composers. Some of the solo work is especially memorable, and I found myself replaying favorite movements - a sure sign of a winning collection. I preferred these to another modern set, the performances found on Helios with Goodman and the Hanover Band; it's impossible not to notice the greater finesse displayed by Fischer's strings. Too, Goodman's way with these works, though never foursquare and certainly well-conceived and in places genuinely searching, rarely captures the personailty and wit bubbling over so constantly in the Fischer set. And personality and wit are certainly major staples in Haydn's recipe book.
If you already own later symphonies but do not have any from this period then this would be a great catch. The major competition in this group of middle symphonies, the Pinnock, was not as well recorded, and I personally think the Fischer are slightly better performances to boot.
Try starting out with Symphony 48 - you might be surprised such a work was written so early!
This man's (Haydn's) fecundity was breathtaking!.......2004-11-14
For some reason, many music lovers seem to think that Haydn's first worthwhile Symphony was #94. Well, I haven't heard them all yet (although I've heard at least half of them), but I can happily verify that the variety and consistent excellence of the entire series of 104 symphonies - including the first 93 - have no equal anywhere in all of music literature; - that's right, ANYWHERE, including the Mozart in comparison to whom Haydn is often unfairly disparaged. Mozart composed 40 symphonies (#37 isn't his), but the first 20 are almost never performed because they're simply forgettable.
Not so with Haydn. I won't claim that all 15 symphonies in this collection are masterpieces, but several of them are, and NONE of them are duds. How this man managed to maintain his flow of wonderful musical ideas, decade after decade, is one of the most remarkable mysteries in the history of human achievement. Remember, in addition to 104 symphonies, he produced what is arguably the largest collection of truly outstanding chamber music by any composer in history, including INVENTING the string quartet as we know it today. In his spare time, he composed what is still today probably the best concerto for trumpet and orchestra ever written, as well as the magnificent oratorio "The Creation" and other works of consistent excellence, too numerous to mention. Why, oh why, when the discussion turns to "Who was the greatest composer of all time?", does the conversation center exclusively around Beethoven, Bach, and Mozart (with a few people parading their avant-garde credentials by advocating Stravinsky's consistently ugly "music")? Haydn does not take a back seat to any of those people.
With regard to the specific works and performances on these CD's, you are unlikely to ever do better than this set. The sound is very fine, if lacking in the latest word in brilliance that you can sometimes get on the very latest state-of-the-art recordings. Fischer obviously loves these works, and the orchestra plays with warmth and enthusiasm.
Get this set now! There is a distressing (I would actually use the word "sickening") trend toward recording any piece composed prior to Beethoven on those indescribably ugly "original instruments" that are all the rage now. In the future you might find it difficult to get recordings of these works performed on listenable instruments. So buy it!
Great performances with great acoustics.......2001-03-06
These performances are paced just right and the Haydn Orchestra brings a crispness and vitality to these works I've not heard on other recordings. This is not just another "good for a discount set" kind of collection. These recordings are first rate. I plan on acquiring all the volumes in this set, and the affordable pricing makes that achievable. I hope they tackle the complete Mozart Symphonies next. Highly recommend.
Another great volume in the collection.......2000-12-23
When you compose over 100 symphonies there are bound to be a few duds right? Not in the case of Haydn. Sure some are more memorable than others, but I have to say that as I have collected all the volumes in this set by Nimbus Records, Volume 3 contains some of my favorite works.
I'm more suited to comment on the technical qualities - and love the fact that every volume is a full digital recording. I also appreciate the fact that Nimbus is able to get all 5 CDs into a double-wide jewel case...really helps save on shelf space!
If you're looking to start and/or complete a Haydn symphony collection this is the set I recommend.

Customer Reviews:
Authoritative.......2003-09-02
These wonderful recordings of the Haydn symphonies are a testament to the value of using authentic instruments in the performance of music of the classical era--provided they are played by virtuosi directed by an inspired leader, as here. The texture is clearer, the rhythmic momentum greater, and the tonal color more pleasing than was ever possible on 19th century-style instruments. I think Haydn himself would have been awed by these recordings had he been able to hear them.
Be sure to snap up the Hogwood/AAM recordings while you can, by buying used or perhaps on German Amazon. Hogwood and his band have been treated shabbily by their recording company, which has discontinued the albums almost as soon as they were released. Indeed, the future of the series is apparently in doubt--a huge shame; after all, Haydn got better with age, and the missing five volumes promise to be the very best. Let's hope the AAM can find a way...

Another monument in the history of recording, this is the only set of Haydn symphonies that ever reached completion, and the performances are generally so good as to bear comparison with many of the best individual performances. The music itself is astounding--107 symphonies, all of them good, many of them shattering masterpieces. Haydn invented the Classical style, which, along with the contributions from his friend Mozart and his student Beethoven, became the standard by which all future music was measured. At a budget price, owning this set is like being able to have your own authentic copy of the "Mona Lisa" for a couple hundred dollars. Awesome! --David Hurwitz

A superb milestone.......2007-05-01
Antal Dorati's pioneering, complete cycle of Haydn's symphonies is a milestone in recording history. Here it is incarnated on 33 CDs. What you get are outstanding, superb performances. The orchestra - Hungarica Philharmonia - is just wonderful, and the interpretations are remarkable in their attention to detail and structure. In addition, the Decca analogue sound has never been better than here. The booklet is also excellent.
Dorati's pioneering efforts included also the Haydn operas, which recently have been collected and released in two boxes from Philips, and the 24 Minuets (Decca).
What about the competition, then? Adam Fischer's Haydn project on Nimbus offers also a complete cycle, now on Brilliant Classics at a bargain price for a very big box with 33 CDs and a brief booklet. Well, for one thing, Dorati's set is the classic cycle. Further, Dorati's readings are less extravagant than Fischer's - and in my view preferable. The sound is also better in the earlier Dorati set: a warm analogue sound in contrast to Fischer's chilly, all-digital sound, which also is very uneven. But Fischer's Haydn is less expensive: you can get his cycle for less than $100 from second-hand dealers. Despite that, Dorati's cycle should be your first choice. Moreover, if shelf space is an issue, the Dorati box is one inch slimmer and a half inch less tall.
Furthermore, there are selections of symphonies from Jochum (DG) and Scherchen (DG), of which I hold the latter in higher esteem due to its idiosyncrasy. In retrospect, however, Dorati's complete cycle has a unique classic status and is as such unchallenged. Thus I warmly recommend it as a part of the foundation of your collection in addition to Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mahler, and Mozart symphony cycles, because this is delightful music that will last for a lifetime on a desert island.

For the sheer pleasure of them all...........2006-11-11
In the mid seventies, my father purchased all of what had been released of this cycle on vinyl LP. As vinyl goes, the London discs were first rate, and a prized possession.
I lost the vinyl collection during a move in the mid 80's. It was an emotional impact; I had cherished them as a child, and as a gift, irreplaceable.
This release is true to my memory, and now I have the entire cycle.
I've performed many of these in various orchestras and loved them all.
There's a fresh energy to the performances, and an elegance to the collection quite rare and delightful.
As a set, it's actually quite affordable considering it's under $6 per disc, or under $2 per symphony.
Antal Dorati's Claim To Fame.......2005-10-14
If it wasn't for this massive recording project, Hungarian-born conductor Antal Dorati would not have been acknowledged as a first-classconductor at a time when such giants as Leopold Stokowski, Herbert Von Karajan, George Solti and Leonard Bernstein were still conducting. Dorati is an exemplary exponent of classical music, which is also to say Classical Era music (1750-1800). Nevertheless, even if Dorati has a superb touch for this kind of repertoire, he is equally as brilliant in 20th century music and Romantic Era music, as his Tchaikovsky symphonies and ballets have proven. At an expensive price, this recording is still worth it. It's a legend in recorded history of classical music. No other conductor dared to take on such a monumental project as to record all 100 and plus symphonies of Franz Joseph Haydn, the composer who by definition began the movement of Classical Era music. It was Mozart, who was his younger friend, that is better known today for this kind of music and moreover, musicologists believe he refined and perfected the style. But don't underestimate Papa Haydn. His music is beautiful, bursting with energy and lightness, elegance, warmth and melodic harmony that is so refreshing to hear especially in our own time which is full of stress.
Haydn's symphonies are not all similar sounding. Each symphony was unique, like the hand prints on people. Yes, at times they do tend to sound the same, possibly because so many of them were in the key of D. Nevertheless, they are music of individual merit. As his symphonies approached its later years and maturation, Haydn employed slights of ear and orchestral innovations that were considered new and bold in his time. The "surprise" in his "Surprise Symphony" is a thunderous "bang" in fortissimo by the orchestra after a melody that is rather bland and sleepy (which to me sounds like "Mary Had A Little Lamb"). The "Clock" Symphony is measured in a kind of "tick-tock" beat and is very very elegant and memorable, as it conjures up the image of a Rococco clock or a clock museum. The Paris Symphonies are an Austrian-German man's "trip" to Paris and his interpretation of French music. It sounds nothing at all like French music at the time although at times it nearly slips into the slow grandeur of the music of Baroque master Jean Baptiste Lully. The London Symphonies are among his best, with a kind of majesty and pomp typically associated with English royalty. If you listen carefully it's in the music. A similar thing occurs in the music to the "Oxford" Symphony. Haydn had visited Oxford to teach music and was awarded a doctorate. He composed music for that special event and the music is brooding, intellectual and somehow very very English.
Antal Dorati and his formidable Hungarica Philharmonica is at their very best in this set. The sound is crisp, gleaming and unbeatable. Even if you get the individualized sets of these symphonies, you will be treating yourself to some top-notch classical music. A must have for fans of Antal Dorati.
A major milestone in recorded music, stunning achievement.......2005-03-29
This complete cycle of the Symphonies of F.J. Haydn heralded a new era in recorded music. Everything about the project was first rate. The sound was among Decca's best. The playing of the little known Philharmonia Hungarica was close to perfect. Dorati's interpretations never disappointed. To top it off, Decca offered the cycle at budget prices and threw in unprecedented notes from H.C. Robbins Landon.
Many would comment "once you've heard one, you've heard them all" when asked about Haydn's vast symphonic output. They could not be more wrong. There isn't a dull symphony or poor performance in the lot. Try such unknowns as #26, or #33, or #51 and #52, to name a few of my lesser known favorites.
Those familiar with Haydn's more well known symphonies, such as the London Symphonies (93-104) were even astonished to find Dorati's performances giving more formidable orchestras and conductors a run for their money.
So what can be said of the set 30 years later?
Everything said earlier still stands, including the original liner notes. Only Graham Johnson's scrupulous notes with his various Hyperion lieder sets surpass Landon's astounding commentary. The digital transfers are from the late 80s, so they are not the best, but still quite serviceable. And the price is still quite reasonable.
Beware, though, that these are not period instruments. Dorati does use "period forces" as much as possible, meaning the number of instruments closely matches what would have been used originally.
So why do I say this set "heralded a new era in recorded music"? Because after the resounding success it enjoyed, many "complete" works projects of similar or greater magnitude got their chance. I doubt we would have any where near the volumes of "complete sets" we now enjoy had it not been for Dorati and Decca's Haydn cycle.
In short, a fabulous set that I would never part with.
Dorati blazed the trail for Haydn interpreters.......2004-11-12
I've owned this complete set of Haydn symphonies for at least a decade or more. While I enjoy period instrument sound and performance practice, you cannot get a complete set on period instruments (I was hoping Hogwood would finish his cycle but I understand it wasn't to be). In all honesty, I think the best period instrument interpretations outdo the modern instrument recordings in sheer energy amd agility, but in respect of modern instruments, Dorati, the pioneer, does an extraordinary job of bringing out the essential flavor and energy that was Haydn's symphonies. I don't like mixing and matching various orchestras and conductors, so buying this 32 CD set gets you all 104+ symphonies in one tidy package. The sound quality is very good considering the times, with a very forward midrange.
