Anton Batagov is a still-young Russian musician who has abandoned his piano career to become a composer. When he was playing, he recorded only 20th century music. Batagov plays all of this music with great poise and color, and much of the time he is mesmerising. It's just that, eventually, one realizes that whatever is intriguing us, it isn't what Ravel intended. We know enough about Ravel's intentions, from his piano rolls, performances by his friends, and his indications in the score, to realize that Batagov is playing everything way too slowly. But he certainly does it with conviction. These Ravel performances are bound to be controversial. --Leslie Gerber

Album Description

This is the first time Xenakis' complete works for solo piano have been collected on a single disc. They are brilliant, virtuoso masterworks of the 20th century piano literature. Despite that most of these works are derived from Xenakis' use mathematical models in their composition, he is always concerned with the overall sound and esthetic result. Diabolically difficult to play, Xenakis himself considered Evryali "Éa kind of athletics for hands, body and brain". The score indeed appears complex, notes proliferate and spread over one to five staves. One is stunned by the sheer virtuosity, the chains of continuously chattering sixteenth notes, and the brilliance and fullness of the overall sound which embraces the extreme registers of the keyboard. Mists indeed invokes its title. It is a work of full of voluminous, opaque clouds interspersed with transparent, pointillistic nebulae; a sonic haze of subtle textures. Herma, Greek for "embryo" or "bond," refers to its use of musical cells which divide and multiply. It is a marvel of contrasting linear courses with clouds of sound varying in instensity and timbre. And the dazzling virtuosity; increasing in speed and intensity, culminating toward the end in an outburst of sound requiring the performer to produce an eveness of touch in the piano's extreme registers while playing up to 20 notes a second. Dikhthas takes advantage of the nature of its two instruments. Xenakis provides a piano part full of clusters and dense polyphonic textures and assigns the violin portamento, glissandi, harmonics and quarter-tones. A highly expressive work, it explores a colorful sonic environment with virtuoso runs for both instruments. The title Palimpsest stands for a reusable piece of parchment on which the writing has been rubbed out and something new has been written in its place. Palimpsest consists of superimposed musical layers, with layers of percussion, string and wind textures alternatively and later simultaneously added to the opening sound layer of the piano. A sort-of concerto for piano and chamber orchestra, the piano as the lead instrument pits itself against the energetic sounds of the ensemble. A.r. (Hommage ^ Ravel) was commissioned by Radio France to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Ravel's death. The conciseness and virtuosity of A.r. make it an ideal encore piece, and it closes the disc here.

wonderful piano end-of-the-world solos, all in one place.......2000-11-05

Herma was first performed in Toyko by Yuji Takahashi in February 1962, and represented the stochastic methods Xenakis had pioneered utilizing the ancient-like computers of that day. It is subtitled "musique symbolique pour piano". Herma means "bond" or it can mean "embryo". The extreme pointillism is forever a fascinating maze for the listener to enter,but the process here is that this piece attempts to cohere and doesn't, so we have an endless tension,irresolvable. The Xenakis aesthetic equates sound to nature,to process,clouds,arborecences,geometric metaphors,all of which has worked quite well in his hands.Sound as a metaphor like a fixed gaze at sound, at timbre as a stationary object, yet it motions itself internally.In Xenakis we cannot say the work has an internal process from tradition,he had never worked along those lines.

Herma was an early masterwork and a well thought departure from the serial tyranny of the times. When you listen to Herma, it is still linearly, there is no real texture to contemplate. Texture for Xeankis came later with Evyrali. The title means something uncontrollable, also dangerous, and here the work portrays an anger, but subjectivity doesn't quite work in Xeankis since his creations have a somewhat anoymous dimension to them. The continuous repetitions in Evyrali is spellbinding, it has that end-of-the-world feel to it, some irrational part of nature is being explored,not quite like Hitchcock's "The Birds" where the cinema screen can be thought of as a texture when you see the flocks and mobs, and gatherings of the Birds. Like wise Mists seems to be cut from the same cloth as evyrali,repetition,mindless it seems, texture bound which does maintain our interest. Texture has been a point of interest and repulsion within modernist expressions. Elliott Carter never found texture an interesting route for modernist expression,Carter has argued that texture in an of itself doesn't hold our interest,nor has it a structural potential,as linear musical thinking. I think it does if handled with some vision, as Xenakis so does with all these works.

Sorry, but I was quite disappointed in this cd, given the caliber of the performers. I found it pleasantly dull and will most likely trade it in for something else.

Wonderful.......2006-12-07

I bought this CD (downloaded it from iTunes, actually...) to play for my baby -- both to help her nap, and to entertain her while awake. It's gorgeous! I especially enjoy the French selections, and baby slept very well while this CD was playing -- then awoke and entertained herself for at least 1/2 hour while listening to it (and playing with her mobile). Having sampled so many really mediocre Classical CD's marketed for children, I decided to just get a CD "for adults" that seemed like a baby might like it, and this one is great for both of us!

Truly, A Day At The Beach.......1999-12-13

I often find that when I listen to New Age music or Classical music mixed with the sounds of nature something seems missing. Perhaps the nature sounds drown out the music, or perhaps the music does not match well with the chosen sounds of nature, or sometimes the instrumentation doesn't fit well. In the case of this CD, "A Day At The Beach", none of these problems appear. If ever there was a perfect blend of the correct nature sounds, music compositions and chosen instrumentation, this CD is it. Living in Savannah, Georgia for seven years, I spent many pleasent moment on the beaches there listening to the ocean sometimes gently, sometimes harshly, crashing upon the sand with the seagulls and dolphin playing in the air and sea (respectively, of course...). This CD, with its beautiful piano renditions of truly nine of the most heart rendering compositions ever written by man, takes me back there. It will sweep you away from your tiring day to the peace and calm of the beach and ocean which I myself used to enjoy so well. There is not a single bad selection on the CD, starting softly with Gymnopedie 1 & 3, building up slowly to Pachebel's most beautiful of all Canon In D Major, and finishing superbly with Beethoven's Pathetique. If you enjoy the beach, if you like beautiful music played brilliantly on the piano, then this is the CD for you.

good relaxing compilations of classical piano music abound, but eckart rahn has upped the ante with this one. you not only get excellent performances of such standards as claire de lune, but a whole second disk with pieces from scriabin, messaien, milhaud and others who have been sorely neglected. this is one well-done job of selection, and there's nothing else out there quite like it. you won't be dissapointed if you're a piano music buff!

Boulez's Ravel/New York, Finest Ravel.......2006-03-27

Compared to the following:
Charles Munch/Daphnis Part 1, only selections + complete part 2/Orch De La Societe des Concerts Paris/1946

Ingelbrecht/French national Complete Daphnis/1953 + Ma Mer L Oye/1955. abit rough and not recommended.

Skrowaczewski/Minnesota/1970's complete Daphnis et Chloe: NOTE after receiving the new Digital Skrow of Daphnis, I much prefer the Boulez.
I need to update my comments on the Skrow recording....

And the famous Munch/Boston on RCA from 1957 i believe.
For some reason I find that recording to be over rated.
Yeah I realize there must be at least 20+ comments on the Munch stating it is "the very finest"
As usual, I'm in disagreement.

yeah I just see all the comments on the Munch. My recent research confirmed my initial impressions of the recording.
IMHO its not acceptable.
Honest;y I didn't like the Munch.
Yeah you read me correctly, I didn't accept it.
"how can they be wrong and you , alone, be reight?"
Well go hear them both for yourself and you decide.
You can get the Munch for $5 used, so you have little to lose.
Notice not one poster on the Munch mentions the Boulez, nor any others as a matter of fact.
They just ramble on out of their imaginations. I'd bet none of them have even heard the Boulez , the Skrowaczewski, the Martinon. All 3 superior to Munch.

I'm not interested in a mechanical 2 dimensional performance.
The genius of the conductor and orch/soloists must be of depth and profound undersatnding of the score itself. That quality is not present in the Munch. Sloppy, better un-attentative would be my opinion of Munch.

Had to bring in those recordings, the top contenders in Daphnis, in order to establish a sense of reference to this Boulez/New York/1972-75.

Unlike those posters on the Munch/Boston who make no reference to any recording whatsoever.
They only say what they "believe to be THE truth" w/o doing the research necessary to make that statement hold to the truth.

I could go into a long story as to why I held off purchasing this set for such a long time, but now that I have it I realized the true worth of this recording.

Here we witness Boulez making a very careful study of the score and you will hear this in the orch's detailing of ceratin passages, soloists are heard distinctly on ALL their parts. No smuges nor murkiness.

Absoluety no rushing of things here, yet incredibly the music does not drag nor lose its sense of cohesiveness , its sense of organic unity. The dyanimics are kept alive in spite of each note being laid out with clarity and exactness.

Its analytical in approach method does not violate the spirit of the music .
Thus the music soares in its etheral sense, which is what Daphne et Chole is all about, music from another realm, the spirit of the score moves forward with breath of life.
Its these 2 contrasting qualities the earthy deetails/heavenly mystery ,that bring me to believe this Boulez/NY is the finest Daphnis et Chloe on record.

All the other works are matched in this careful attention to deatil. Nothing quite like this Ravel from anyone else.

Pierre if you happen upon my posting, I really wish to extend my deepest appreaciation for what you did on this recording.
You have revealed the genius about which many have yet to discover in Ravel.
One day this recording will become the definitive Daphnis et Chloe.

Fabulous set!.......2005-10-12

In the Apollonian personality of Boulez Ravel is revealed from another perspective. His Ravel is far to be a pleasant and delicate composer to reveal the bitterness beneath the score. I like this approach because not only gives some interesting clues about the relevance of certain dismissed works such as La Valse, for instance.

In Scherezade Boulez makes a mythical journey that recalls us so much the similar vision concerned with Daphne and Cloé, where the unconscious side of the story seems to reflect menacing shadows and twilight echoes of missed visions in a supra rational world His Valses Nobles and Sentimentales confirm the evidence; are played with emotion but without sentiment.

Rapsodie espagnole is one of the best registers triumphs, brilliant and concise. Pavana is egregious. Le tombeau de Couperin was played with magisterial phrasing . The Concert for the left hand finds Entremont in one of his best days. In what Daphne and Cloe concerns there is a name: Charles Munch and the unbeatable version of the Fifties with the Boston Symphony. Captivating and engaging approach.

Go for this record because when a composer-director with the admirable musical maturity of Boulez, something new happens, because the baton becomes scalpel.

Best Recording of Faune.......2002-05-07

I am a professional flutist, and this is the best recording of Prelude a l'apres midi d'une faune that I have heard. Of course, Jeanne Baxtresser's performance (flute) is flawless and musical. The CD is very well recorded, and each piece is performed impeccably and with the highest artistry. In my opinion, this CD sets the standard for these works. Buy it!

The Voice of Dissent.......2002-02-07

Did you notice the other two reviews disagree on which pieces are the bad ones? Masur does a great job of interpreting one of the more difficult composer's works (Debussy) and nicely handles the more popular and familiar as well (Ravel). This is a good intro to two composers that are often compared--and often share space on one CD.

Not the one to get.......2000-02-24

I had such high hopes in getting this CD. Being still somewhat new to classical music, I listen to associates for new ideas. Kurt Masur was recommended to me as a very good conductor and interpreter. With this in mind, when I bought this CD I hoped to be wowed. I wasn't. First let me just say boo to "La Valse". The ending just doesn't ignite like it's supposed to. Instead of the caustic ending I have grown to love I hear a bland ending without the Byronic element. Same with Bolero. The redeeming features of the CD are the Debussy pieces--and then only somewhat. Bottom line.....there are better recordings to buy.

Half and Half.......1999-02-17

About half of this CD is really good and the other half is not. The Prelude is very good as are La Valse and Bolero. This recording brings out much of the inner detail in those peices that other recordings may miss. The saxophone peice was not very interesting. La Mer was porly interpreted and very unexciting. La Mer does have some beautiful moments though. For example, the trumpet solo at the beginning of the Dialogue is exceptionally well played.
