¡Ole! .......2005-02-19
A dutiful son, Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) began to study medicine but he soon abandoned everything that interfered with music. Thank goodness! It has been customary to regard early 20th-century Spanish music as centered on two pairs of composers: Albéniz and Granados, Falla and Turina. However, any resemblance between the latter two is superficial. Nor is there much of Albéniz in Turina, although some of his works have a relationship with the style of Granados. Despite the picturesque local flavor in some compositions, Turina tried perhaps harder than any of his Spanish contemporaries to write music of a European standard in the conventional major forms. Turina was the only one of the four leading twentieth-century Spaniards to write a symphony. However, when it came to his piano music, or at least much of it, the Spanish flavor was inescapable. He was himself a wonderful pianist, having studied in Paris with Moritz Moszkowski, and his piano music is virtuosic. His music, like Falla's, partakes a bit more of Impressionist gestures. Still, it is colored by a subtle humor, grace and elegance characteristic of his native Seville.
On this disc pianist Jordi Masó plays works based on dance Spanish and/or Gypsy rhythms. Probably Turina's best known works are the 'Danzas fantásticas,' Op. 22. That is partly because he also orchestrated them brilliantly and they have featured on many symphony programs. My own favorite, perhaps of all of his music, is the hypnotic and lovely 'Ensueño' ('Fantasy'), the second of that set. Masó plays it very well, but I will confess that I prefer the orchestral version and for that very much like the recording made by Jesús López Cobos with the Cincinnati SO. Of piano versions, Masó's is as good as any I've heard.
'Three Andalusian Dances' are early pieces, written while he was still in Paris, but it is clear that Turina already had developed his own personal style. I particularly like Masó's performance of the third, 'Zapateado.' There are two sets of 'Gypsy Dances' ('Danzas gitanas'), Opp. 55 and 84, ten characteristic pieces. Particularly effective, for me, are Masó's interpretations of the mysterious (and almost French-sounding) 'Invocación' and the piece that follows it, the lightning-fast 'Danza ritmica' ('Rhythmic Dance') that is over almost before it begins. Following are the rarely heard 'Dos Danzas sobre temas populares españoles' ('Two dances on traditional Spanish themes'), Op. 41. I say they're rarely heard; I suppose what I mean is that I don't recall ever hearing them before. The first, 'Cadena de sequidillas' ('Chain of Sequidillas') is based on Andalusian melodies. The second, 'El arból de Guernica' ('The Tree of Guernica') is based on a Basque dance, the 'zorzico,' and is in 5/8 time. (The piece has nothing to do with Picasso's famous anti-war painting 'Guernica'; it was composed 11 years before the painting was done for the 1937 World's Fair.)
The final work is 'Bailete: Suite de danzas del siglo XIX' ('Dance: Suite of nineteenth-century dances'), Op. 79. It was dedicated to Joaquin Nin y Castellanos, a Cuban composer who was the father, as it happens, of feminist writer Anaïs Nin and of one of my favorite 'unknown' composers, the Cuban-American Joaquin Nin-Culmell, who died precisely a year ago at 95. It comprises five traditional 19th-century dances--Entrada, Tirana, Bolero, Danza de corte, and Fandango. This is a brilliant suite, one I'd never heard before, and the highlight of the disc for me.
If you love Spanish piano music--and who doesn't?--and don't know Turina this is a good place to start. It is budget-priced, the piano is beautifully recorded and Masó plays very nicely. There is a notation that it is 'Volume 1.' Chances are you'll get hooked by this one and have to buy each new issue as it comes out.

Mediocre sound.......2006-07-23
Although I'm no stickler for the latest digital wizardry, the sound is what hurts thess performances, not the conducting, or even the somewhat hurley-burley orchestra. The Sinfonia is a major work, and deserves a wider audience; the orchestral versions of the Danzas are an interesting alternative to the *excellent* piano version on Naxos (Jordi Maso); and the Ritmos will be new to most listeners. But...this CD has the unfortunate characteristic problems with treble common to many early CDs (though this recording is by no means old). The violins get quite shrill at times, especially in loud passages. I'd enthusiastically recommend the Lopez-Cobos reading of the Sinfonia and Danzas, but unfortunately his CD also has a surprisingly tepid version of Iberia. The Naxos CD is a keeper - but it could have been so much better.
Turina gets an long-deserved airing.......2003-02-01
Is there anyone who doesn't respond to the voluptuous melodies and alternately sultry or invigorating rhythms of 20th century Spanish music? We've been lavished with great recordings of Spanish music by pianists of at least three generations: Arthur Rubinstein (in Spain he was called 'our Arturo'), Alicia de Larrocha, and now Santiago Rodriguez. But recordings of the extensive Spanish orchestral repertoire of this period has shamefully been largely limited to a few well-known pieces: 'La Vida Breve,' 'Three-Cornered Hat,' the orchestral version of 'Ibéria,' 'Nights in the Gardens of Spain'; 'Spanish' pieces by French and Russian composers don't count. Turina's music is treated like a step-child. He's of the same generation as De Falla and has pretty much been in his shadow. At any rate, when is the last time (if ever) you heard any of these pieces in a concert?
Probably the best-known pieces here are the three 'Danzas fantásticas,' at least partly because they exist in a fairly popular piano version. I've loved the second of them, 'Ensueño' ('Dream'), as a separate piece for many years, after first hearing it played by Rubinstein. And occasionally one will hear Turina's earliest orchestral piece: 'La procesión del Rocio,' which depicts a religious procession in a small town near Seville. One hears church bells and the Spanish national anthem as the procession wends its way toward the village church.
'Ritmos' was written in the 1920s as a ballet for the famous Spanish dancer 'La Argentina', but it was never staged and it has rarely been heard outside Spain since its 1928 première. It is in six movements, played without pause. The most evocative is the last one, 'Danza exótica', which recalls themes from the earlier movements in languid, and then exciting, rhythms.
The most important piece on this disc is the 'Sinfonía sevillana', which some consider Turina's orchestral masterpiece. It is certainly one of the most important Spanish sympthonies of its century. The middle movement, 'Por el río Guadalquivir', is a subtly perfumed nocturne. It is followed by the raucous dance episodes of 'Fiesta en San Juan de Aznalfarache,' which closes out the symphony with finger-snapping vigor.
It must be noted that the spectacularly talented Spanish conductor, Jésus López-Cobos, recorded all these pieces (except for 'Ritmos') with the Cincinnati Symphony just before he left his long-time post as music director there. I've not heard that recording, but from his earlier recording of Albéniz's 'Ibéria' with that orchestra, I would bet it's a scorcher.
This recording is with a regional Spanish orchestra and the playing is a little rough and ready in places, but the players certainly have this music in their bones and the Iberian spirit is all there. And you can't beat Naxos's prices, can you?

López-Cobos, departing from his successful tenure at the helm of the Cincinnati orchestra, opens the program with "Iberia," the most popular of Debussy's Images for Orchestra. It's played beautifully, though without the drive that permeates versions by Munch and Paray, among others. But the main attraction here is the works of Turina, and they get bang-up performances. The three Danzas Fantàsticas, which Turina later transcribed for piano, are ravishing in their Impressionistic orchestral garb, and the final one bristles with the energy of flamenco. Sinfonia Sevillana, really a three-movement tone poem, paints a colorful picture of a colorful city, and La Procesión del Rocio, a tone portrait of a religious procession in Seville, is infused with gypsy melodies. López-Cobos and his orchestra are in their element here, and it's hard to imagine more fetching performances of Turina's music, especially as enhanced by Telarc's fine sonics. --Dan Davis

Good all round.......2003-07-23
You might not want to hear the music very often, - though in fact its great fun, with the slow movement of the Sinfonia Sevillana being quite lovely, but you will want to hear the sound, which is gorgeous, if a little drily analytical in DSD fashion.
Sounds like De Falla's lost music.......2003-06-02
I am excited to find new music especially when it's good. Turina offers a clearly spanish style of composing that would be at home with Manual De Falla who I am familiar with. Turina is his own man and I hear nothing derivative here, just some deliciously melodic and interesting material. Of course the playing is excellent with wonderful clarity in the wide-range recording.
Viva Turina!.......2003-02-06
Yes, the Debussy sounds great on this recording, but the three works by Turina are the real highlights here. The Danzas Fantasticas in particular are great fun and compare well with any number of better-known "Spanish" pieces for orchestra. The Cincinnati musicians are in fine form, and the Telarc sound would be hard to improve upon. And I agree with the other reviewer about the quality of the playing in Cincinnati in general--to paraphrase Elgar: the center of the orchestral world in the US is now probably somewhere rather west of New York and Philadelphia.
Magnificent recording, both musically and technically.......2002-01-17
What a fitting departure for the great Jesus Lopez-Cobos, who is leaving the great Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra in superb shape after a 15 year tenure. This recording will unfortunately be overlooked by many because it is not Mahler, Bruckner, Beetoven, etc. This is unfortunate, however, as it is a magnificent work of art on all levels. On the basis of this and other CSO recordings over the past decade it it clearly time to reassess the American "Top Five" orchestras---and proclaim the Cincinnati among the greats.
