Customer Reviews:
Excellent recording and performance.......2007-04-13
I must disagree with the other reviewer here. I have found the Ninth symphony an astonishing and incredible work by Shostakovich not to mention the precision with which it is performed in this recording. It's obvious to me at least that the re-work and outcome of the Ninth snubbed Stalin and the victory party outright. Just how many war symphonies must one compose? If you want war listen to the 7th and 8th. The Ninth is tight, complex and unleashes new and refreshing mastery although its levity must still be puzzling to some.
surprisingly uninspiring.......2003-07-24
The first is pretty good, but the 9th symphony, whatever Shosty's hidden motives for writing it, is pretty mediocre, and one of his worst symphonies in thie writer's opinion.
