From Sublime to Comique.......2000-05-16

Gates' music for flute is simply sublime. One of the earlist memories of the power of music to move me beyond myself and the frustrations of daily living was the slow movement to Mozart's Concerto for Flute and Harp. Ever since that day the flute has had the power to transport me to a higher plane of conscienciousness. This music stands in the tradition of Mozart, Debussy, Vaughn Williams. Judy Hand is wonderful in all the selections but particularly so in the Sonatina Gates composed for her. What inspriation of interpertation and beauty of sound. All in all a wonderful, joyful and delightful album. The Suite Comique is amazing music - not only for a twenty-one year old, but for a composer of any age.

An Excellent Recording.......2000-05-10

I recently purchased this new CD. I was initally interested in getting a recording of Gates' Sonatina.

Well, I'm happy to have the recording of the Sonatina, but I totally fell in love with another piece on the CD, the Concertino for Flute and Wind Ensemble. This piece is gorgeous! It's the kind of twentieth century music that I love best: rich in melody and harmony, lush orchestration, interesting textures, a quality in the music that affects my heart.

The entire CD is well worth having, in my estimation. The first piece on the CD is called Suite Comique and it's scored for flute, strings, and piano. The last selection is a lyrical, charming piece for flute and guitar called Je m'en dors (Cajun Waltz) which I think is a perfect piece for flute and guitar duos and would work well for weddings, church, concerts, etc.

Judy Hand's flute playing is beautiful. She and Keith Gates are both on the music faculty of McNeese University in Lake Charles, Louisiana.
