George Sand & Chopin

Written and produced by Jeremy Siepmann, this audio-bio not only tells the strange story of Chopin's life but also includes generous examples of his music, drawn from the bottomless pit of Naxos musical CDs. An excellent idea was to use actors for the voices of Chopin (Anton Lesser), George Sand and other females in his life (Elaine Claxton and Karen Archer), and other male acquaintances (Neville Jason). It is the kind of reading that would fascinate even if the work were fictional.

His letters are particularly fascinating, especially as they are read dramatically by the small cast; and one would rather hear about all his faults--physical and psychological--from people who knew him well. Perhaps his strange epistolary relationship with his Titus is dwelt upon a bit too much, but such are the times (then and now).

My only criticism in a negative direction is the length of the musical examples. I do not really think the entire "Revolutionary Etude" had to be played or the entire "Funeral March"; a minute or two with a fadeout would have been fine, especially on repeated hearings where one wants the facts. Nevertheless, highly recommended.

The Embodiment of the Romantic Era A Valentine Treat.......2003-02-18

The French is ennunciated to perfection and the generous booklet provides translations in several other languages for listeners who would like to improve their French comprehension.

The music gains authenticity and fire from being interpreted by a variety of artists of Polish descent.

As befits the French sensibility, which believes terrestial love to be magnificent but transient, and finds happy endings simplistic, the story has a bittersweet ending that is perfectly in keeping with Chopin's music -- that strains toward the limits of the possible.

Listening to this album -- a very apt Valentine gift from my significant other of several decades -- was an unalloyed pleasure. I hope to continue my quest for more of George Sand's wonderful novels to read (a rather late in life discovery) and will now listen to Chopin's music with deepened appreciation.

Album Description

Broadway musicals have always been about love in its infinite forms. This has resulted in a huge crop of wonderful love songs — joyous, sad, flirtatious, angry, passionate, mischievous, touching. They range from the deeply serious to the out and-out hilarious, as, come to think of it, does love itself.

So in this recording, West Side Story's Maria proclaims her joy in “I Feel Pretty” and South Pacific's Nellie Forbush displays similar feelings in “A Wonderful Guy.”

We also have Guys & Dolls's Adelaide singing “Adelaide's Lament” about the cold she's developed because of the frustration of a 14-year engagement to Nathan Detroit that seems destined never to result in a wedding.

Pal Joey's Vera, a sophisticated “older” woman, who knows Joey isn't worth it, sings about finding herself nonetheless “Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered.”

Of course, Kate of Kiss Me, Kate, in no uncertain terms, announces “I Hate Men,” while Oklahoma's irrepressible Ado Annie sings “I Cain't Say No.”

On the Town's lady taxi driver, Hildy, tries to convince us of her total desirability with the madcap seduction of “I Can Cook, Too,” while Sally of Follies sings of her total immersion in her love in one of Broadway's most touching love songs, “Losing My Mind.”

the lovely Julian Slade musical in all it's glory.......2003-10-18

This cast album features members from the acclaimed 1982 London revival of SALAD DAYS, with Julian Slade himself playing one of the pianos featured on the recording. Christina Matthews offers up a thrilling soprano voice as Jane and sings two of the score's choice numbers, "I Sit in the Sun" and "The Time of My Life".

Adam Bareham is good in the role of Tim, and sings wonderfully in "We Said We Wouldn't Look Back" and "The Saucer Song". Sheila Steafel is excellent in the dual-roles of Timothy's Mother and Asphinxia, the exotic cabaret diva who sings the comical "Sand in My Eyes". Elizabeth Seal (IRMA LA DOUCE) is criminally under-used as Jane's Mother.

Others in the cast include Barry Martin, Malcolm Rennie, Osmund Bullock, Tricia George, Sue Aldred and David Urwin.

A lovely cast album and very nice for the price!
