This collection, whose French title might be translated "Verdi Vocal Rarities," is a unique contribution to the Verdi centennial year. Its 136 selections on eight compact discs offer an in-depth survey of singers who recorded notable Verdi performances during the era of 78-rpm recording. Coincidentally, this period covers, within a few years, the half- century after the composer's death, in 1901. Some of the singers in the earliest cuts--tenor Francesco Tamagno and bass Victor Maurel, for example--had known Verdi and sung for him. Many of the singers will be familiar to connoisseurs of Verdi discography--Enrico Caruso, Boris Christoff, Fedora Barbieri, Ezio Pinza, Elisabeth Schwarzkopf, Tito Gobbi, Beniamino Gigli, and Jussi Bjoerling, to name a few. Others, such as Frieda Hempel, Emmy Destinn, Martha Modl, Joseph Schwarz, Gino Cigna, and Mattia Battistini, are names you come across in books about opera, but you have heard their voices only if you spend a lot of time with historic recordings. And a lot of performances, including some of the best, are likely to be the work of singers encountered for the first time.

Most of the big moments from Verdi's operas are included--grouped by opera, not by chronological order of recording. There are a few strange omissions; for example, the "Miserere" scene from Il trovatore. But other selections, such as "Ah fors' e lui" and "La donna e mobile," are given in two or three performances--sometimes in French, German, or Russian as well as Italian. Some of the performances are classics; many are mind-boggling.

Some favorite Verdi singers--Maria Callas, Joan Sutherland, Placido Domingo, and Luciano Pavarotti, among them--are absent because they began recording after the collection's cutoff date. Other problems are mostly related to the dates of the original recordings. The sound is all pre-high-fidelity and sometimes quite primitive, though some remarkable work has been done to optimize the earliest items. The annotations are minimal--mostly the date, venue, and performers in each cut, with pictures of the biggest stars. This decision was probably made to keep the price low, and those who already know most of the arias and ensembles will likely find the tradeoff acceptable. --Joe McLellan

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Rare but well-polished Verdi gems........2001-10-21

Classical music enthusiasts will have become aware that EMI have been marketing several boxed sets with a French title containing the word "introuvables". The word suggests that when you open the box you'll find items that are so rare as to be almost unobtainable. It suggests also that their rarity is not due only to age or production limitations, it is also due to the incomparability of their quality.

Few would quibble about the quality of what is to be found in this splendid collection of Verdi "introuvables". You will hear how Emmy Destinn portrayed Aida yearning for her homeland in 1908, and how Elisabeth Schwarzkopf portrayed Violetta intereacting with her lover's father in 1953. You will hear several items duplicated. Francesco Navarini, recorded in 1907 with a piano, makes a stunning Fiesco in the "Simon Boccanegra" prologue, as is not up-staged by the more familiar Alexander Kipnis version which follows.

You might regret that your favourite Verdi record is not here. You'll have opportunities to make comparisons, however. I could never believe that anyone could equal Giuseppe de Luca'a 1930 "O sommo Carlo" from "Ernani, but here I have a chance to hear for the first time how the famous baritone Mattia Battistini did it in 1906.

Keith Hardwick compiled and transferred this collection originally in the late 1980s. He has augmented and transferred that issue onto 8 CDs, and provided the annotations. Full recording details are provided, there are many singer photographs but no singer biographies.

The recording dates range from 1903 to 1953. Sadly, almost all the singers - Dame Elisabeth Schwarzkopf being a notable exception - are all dead by now. Those of us who have opportunities to hear and collect their work, however, can be grateful that the older we get the better it sounds. Indeed, I have never heard any of the items included here in better transfers. Elsewhere I have given this issue a five star rating. Subsequent hearings have made me aware of a technical matter which may bother some listeners. This set has been transferred from the long playing records on which it was originally issued. Their pristine sound quality has been preserved but also some of the ghostly "swish" that accompanied each revolution.

          Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A LEGENDARY TENOR IN GREAT VERDIAN ROLES.......2001-05-07

This stupendous CD provides 78 minutes of glorious singing by Giacomo Lauri-Volpi in formidable company. His partners, Elisabeth Rethberg, Giuseppe De Luca, Maria Caniglia , Gino Bechi and Mario Basiola (his old buddy at the Santa Cecilia academy in Rome) are legendary operatic stars on their own.

The CD operatic excerpts include demanding tenor roles such as Alvaro (Forza), Radames (Aida) and Otello (Otello). Giacomo Lauri-Volpi comes out with sublime artistry and heroism.

For me, he is the greatest Italian tenor to grace the operatic stage. This is a tall statement. He emitted exquisite and unequalled "mezza voce" notes. He used his magnificent lirico-spinto armour to sing verismo operas. In Verdi, he resorted to bel canto, lyric passion and a powerful upper register. Coupled to sublime artistry and "full grasp of the composer's musical intentions", they define eternal greatness.

The CD is an admirable record of his voice extraordinary range. In !"Quando le sere al placido" (Luisa Miller) and "Ella mi fu rapita" (Rigoletto) I revelled the solidly anchored bel canto technique and, at full throttle, the fioriture are all there. I am not a fan of "Forza" but, hearing the splendid duet of Lauri-Volpi and Bechi in " Solenne in quest'ora" and "Invano Alvaro...", I discovered new dramatic values in the score.

The great Nile scene from Aida is presented in its entirety. The arias were recorded at different times between 1927 and 1930. Yet, the masterful transfer by Nimbus was so coherent that the whole act is beautifully balanced. Rethberg , Lauri-Volpi and De Luca are transcendental in their singing. In "Io sono disonorato" and the final phrase of the act "O sacerdote, io resto a te", Lauri-Volpi sustains a top note which has unique timbre and resonance. In comparison, Martinelli, Pertile, more recently Pavarotti, Corelli and Del Monaco top note is simply volume.

The six excerpts from Otello recorded in 1941 are! the icing on the sumptuous cake. Lauri-Volpi shows his sublime artistry, dramatic phrasing and superb clarity (I should know, being my mother-tongue) in all the arias. It is no wonder that he has been hailed his generation's finest Otello. I particularly liked his thrilling "Si, pel ciel marmoreo giuro!", the oath-taking duet with Iago. This is the crown of the stupendous CD and a memorable treat to all "Otello" fans.

4 out of 5 stars Mostly superb singing and interpretations.......2007-04-13

The song interpretations show the voice at its most beautiful (though she has trouble with some of the turns in O del mio amato ben). The Pace, pace mio Dio was disappointing; too little dynamic variety; her interpretation on her complete Forza is much better. Amazing low notes in the live performance of an aria from Boito's Nerone. The transfers really flatter the voice, but also show some of the usual problems with breath control and flat high notes. But all in all, this disc shows why she was one of the most thrilling singers of her era and why her career was legendary. If only singers of such unforced vocal opulence and commitment were singing this repertorie today.

          5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-27

This second recital of Maria Caniglia on Preiser is even more thrilling than the first. In addition to operatic aria's, we get the opportunity to hear Signora Caniglia in songs. Her artistry reigns supreme as she caresses every phrase and word. Every vowel is crystal clear, and her rolled r's are concise. The sheer quality of her voice blanketed with velvet and satin is an absolute joy, while the high notes have squillo and brilliance. Her renditions of 'La mamma morta' from Andrea Chenier and 'Vissi d'arte' from Tosca recorded for HMV in 1940 are released for the first time ever, and rank among the finest interpretations on disc. I cannot recall these two recordings ever being on LP. Beniamino Gigli and Giacomo Lauri-Volpi, her tenor partners join her in duets from La Traviata, La Boheme and Otello. The songs are sung with delicacy and passion. 'O del mio amato ben' is heart gripping and 'Plaisir D'amour' sung here in Italian as 'Piacer D'amor' is haunting and mesmerizing. This CD is among my top ten favorite soprano recitals. Preiser's transfers are wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars Guido Cantelli -- Another Testament to Greatness.......2004-02-28

The Testament label has generally been associated with high quality reissues of classic mono and stereo performances languishing in the EMI or Decca vaults. However, this 4CD set featuring Guido Cantelli's NBC Broadcast Concerts (from December 1950) is something altogether new. Sure Testament has rescued many of Cantelli's vintage studio recordings from obscurity, introducing him to a generation of classical listeners not even born when the conductor tragically died at the age of 36 in 1956. But this partnership with the Estate of Guido Cantelli will provide connoisseurs with rare recordings for years to come, as many more releases are planned for the future.

But let's get to the title at hand. There are three things that I love about this set. First, because Cantelli left us with so few studio recordings, just hearing him play more music in the first place is a miracle. Second, many of the works featured here are earlier accounts of pieces he later did record in the studio -- Mozart's "A Musical Joke," Haydn's 93rd and Beethoven's 5th Symphonies in this case (though the latter was unfinished). It is delightful to experience Cantelli's multiple accounts of these works, something we take for granted with conductors like Furtwangler, Bernstein or Karajan. Finally, it is great to hear Cantelli tackle such diverse material with the NBC Symphony Orchestra, from baroque composers like Vivaldi, Corelli and Geminiani to modern masters like Milhaud, Schuman and Dallapiccola.

With that being said, there are also three things that keep me from giving this set a fifth star. First, the mono sound is very good, but certainly will not be of a high enough quality to please everyone. Second, each disc has been structured to include one day's broadcast performance, for example the four featured here are December 4, 11, 18 & 25, 1950. The unfortunate result of showcasing each day on its own disc is that they each log in at (comfortably) under an hour. In fact, the broadcasts are short enough to squeeze this set on to three discs, but of course performances from different days would overlap on a given disc. Which brings me to my third and final point, when paying full-price times four discs for this title, surely many of us (yours truly included) would rather pay less and deal with combined sessions on only three discs.

In all, though this is a welcome release and I look forward to the issue of Cantelli NBC Broadcasts from later in the 1950s. In this era of homogenized collections, it is essential for a label like Testament to continue to save the future of classical by rescuing great music from the past.
