5 out of 5 stars Was there someone who sang "Rusalka" more beautifully?.......2002-06-21

I don't think so. The Arts label is to be commended for keeping Popp's recordings available at such a reasonable price. Besides the wonderful offerings of Mozart and Verdi here, the album's price is returned tenfold by the gorgeous rendition of "O Silver Moon" from Dvorak's Rusalka.

5 out of 5 stars An authoritative Lucia Popp compilation!!!.......2002-01-26

This album contains some of the most incredible opera arias sung by one of my personal favorite singers -- Lucia Popp. Her felicity of expression and facility in the department of vocal fireworks stumbles me to this day. Sadly she was taken away from us at a young age but she left her imprint on history with her countless recordings during the prime of her career. The best songs on the CD and ones I'd argue could be authoritative versions of not only the performer, but the works are "Depuis le jour" by Charpentier and "Caro Nome" from Rigoletto by Verdi. It's a short CD and it's an import, but it's worth every penny for these two recordings alone. Her talent is unmatched with flawless trills and cadenzas -- her renditions by far supercede that of Callas, Sutherland, and Bonney. This European treasure will never be forgotten.

5 out of 5 stars Exemplary singing!.......2000-05-08

Lucia Popp recorded this recital in the early 1980s, when she was beginning to adapt her voice away from coloratura roles into the lyric repertoire. This record is a complete success vocally and artistically. The voice is silvery and pure, yet with a pleasing astringency to it. She handles the coloratura passages with aplomb but is even more impressive in the middle voice, where she is beautifully communicative, caressing each word with the value and weight it deserves. And she does this idiomatically in four languages! The Mozart, Verdi, and Weber arias are standouts, but the two Czech arias are even more special. Popp was a native speaker of Slovak, closely related to Czech, so her pronunciation is deliciously idiomatic. At mid-price this should be in every opera collection!

5 out of 5 stars Glorious Popp.......1999-11-26

Lucia Popp covered a lot of territory in this recording from the early eighties. Her Mozart is well-known, of course, but other composers like Dvorak and Massenet are also represented. I've heard stronger, more voluptuous voices, but Popp's singing still impresses me with its naturalness and sentience. There's a recognizable character in her voice that imprints itself on everything she sings. It's not unlike hearing the voice of an old friend. Warm, lyrical, and above all, tender.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent recording.......2004-11-18

Goetz's charnming version of The Taming of the Shrew held the stage in Germany for much of the 19th century. It is a tuneful, engaging score similar in style to Nicolai's singspiel version of The Merry Wives of Windsor.

This opera used to be only available in a 1944 radio broadcast issued on Urania records and recently available on CD from Preiser. This version on Gala is a 1955 broadcast in much better sound with superior conducting from Keilberth and a superior cast headed by the great basso Gottlob Frick who was also featured on the the 1944 recording.

At Gala's bargain price, it is a steal. No libretto unfortunately, but decent notes and synopsis.

4 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to a composer who "might have been".......2005-11-06

Hermann Goetz died at 36, and based upon this sampling of his music he likely would have evolved into a better-known composer had he lived longer. These works give us hints of a distinctive musical personality, definitely the efforts of a young man with potential.

The symphony opens with an allegro that has pastoral overtones -- I can almost hear the bird calls -- reminiscent in spots of Joachim Raff's "Im Walde" symphony (though this is not a program work like the Raff and has its roots in the more traditional school of Mendelssohn and Schumann.)

The second and third movements stand out: The second makes playful use of horn calls and has been called a precursor to Mahler, no less. The third is an adagio, at times quietly beautiful, at times passionately yearning in an almost Brahmsian way. The first reviewer accurately describes the finale as Schumannesque, and it is certainly a fitting conclusion, if perhaps just a little less inspired than the two movements that precede it.

The one-movement violin concerto, which is perhaps more of a fantasy for violin and orchestra than a concerto, is a tender and lovely work. If you like Bruch, you'll like this.

The zippy, well-crafted overture provides a bit of dessert after the earlier courses. Unfortunately, it only boosts the total CD time to 56 minutes, which is not exactly generous for a full-price CD, and which is why I have deducted a star. As is typical with CPO, the recorded sound is fine and the liner notes extensive.

Overall, this disc is recommended without hesitation to those who enjoy music of the Romantic era, and who are seeking to discover enjoyable works by lesser-known composers. Goetz is one of the finest of the unsung composers and these works do not deserve to be neglected.

Note: Amazon lists the title of this CD as "Symphony No. 9" but it is actually Symphony in F, Opus 9. Quite a difference!

5 out of 5 stars A winner all around.......2000-10-18

Hermann Goetz had the great misfortune to die young. If this disc is any indication, had he lived longer he might have made a name for himself. As it is, we have a disc of memorable music from the early 1870's which whets one's appetite for more.

The symphony is a genial piece, containing a pastoral intermezzo with a horncall that presages Mahler and a lovely trio; an attractive lyric adagio; and a finale that echoes Schumann in his more unbuttoned moods. The opening movement isn't quite as memorable, but I think the average concertgoer would find this a wonderful discovery.

The Violin Concerto has the same sort of sweet lyricism one finds in Bruch. Goetz doesn't indulge in major acrobatics and the piece is relatively short, which could, perhaps, explain its neglect. The quality of the music certainly doesn't. The overture to The Taming of the Shrew which rounds out the program maintains the same high standards.

Goetz certainly isn't a composer who tries to storm the heavens. Instead, he writes tuneful, Romantic music which fits comfotably with composers like Bruch and Joachim Raff. All these masters do NOT deserve obscurity and make pleasing alternatives to the usual overplayed warhorses.

All of which is to say, get this disc! I'm sure you will be pleased. The performers dig into the music with a sense of discovery and energy and the sound is up to CPO's high standards.

5 out of 5 stars Lotte Lehmann in her Prime.......2006-07-08

Lotte Lehmann is one of the great German sopranos of the Twentieth Century. For many years, from her creation of the role of the Composer in the revised version of Richard Strauss's "Ariadne auf Naxos" in 1916 up to her departure in 1937 prior to the Nazi occupation of Austria, she was a star at the Vienna State Opera and a darling of the Viennese audience. She was also enthusiatically received at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, as well as the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

During the years of her prime Lehmann created a couple of Strauss's operatic heroines, including the Dyer's Wife in "Die Frau Ohne Schatten" and Christine in "Intermezzo." She also sang a great variety of roles ranging from Wagner's romantic heroines to the Italian verisimo parts by Giordano and Puccini. Puccini was said to have been one of her bigget admirers, especially for her renditions of Mimi in La boheme and Suor Angelica. However, her most famous roles were the Marshallin in Strauss's "Der Rosenkavalier" and Sieglinde in Wagner's "Die Walkure." This Preiser issue documents accoustic recordings of nearly all her more renowned roles, made between 1914 and 1925.

Although Lehmann later made more amenable electrical recordings of many of the arias here, as well as excerpts from "Der Rosenkavalier" and Acts One and Two of "Die Walkure," these accoustic recordings more often than not show her in fresher voice with a joyous freedom on top. Her hallmarks as a singing-actress, such as her always vivid enunciation of the text and her great variety of tonal colors and moods, are also evident even in the earliest of these recordings.

This set is one of the gems in Preiser's famous historic singers series and anyone interested in operatic singing should consider investing in this set. The CD transfer unavoidably contains some surface noise but the vibrancy and color of Lehmann's voice are faithfully recaptured.

3 out of 5 stars This Fairly Good Recording Has Several Strikes Against It.......2007-04-30

Hermann Goetz's opera based on Shakespeare's 'The Taming of the Shrew' had a brief popularity in the late 19th century and no less a personage than George Bernard Shaw called it the best German comic opera after 'Die Meistersinger.' And indeed it does have lovely music with one good tune after another. It is strange, though, that Goetz's version (set to Joseph Viktor Widmann's German libretto) has Katharina falling for Petruccio as soon as she meets him, whereby she becomes more a typical 19th-c. opera heroine than a proto-feminist as portrayed in Shakespeare's play. Consequently the fireworks as well as the sexual tension between the leading couple are largely muted.

This recording, made in Munich in 1955 and in acceptable mono sound, has a starry cast -- the great black-voiced bass Gottlob Frick as Baptista, lyric soprano Annelies Kupper as Katharina, Waldemar Kmentt as Lucentio, Benno Kusche as Hortensio and Paul Kuen as the Tailor. The only unknown among the principals is baritone Marcel Cordes (né Kurt Schumacher!) as Petruccio (in the libretto Petruchio has been respelt Petruccio). The singing is excellent throughout. Conductor Joseph Keilberth was a respected musician of his time and an experienced opera conductor. I was familiar with the opera from having seen two productions of it -- one in New York in the early 1980s starring the very young Lauren Flanigan, later a diva of the first water, and a production of a regional opera company. But I've never seen a score or a libretto. I looked in vain for a libretto in the booklet accompanying this two-CD set. Only a brief synopsis is provided. Further, the numbers list on the back-card of the CD case is devoid of anything but a short title; there is no indication who is singing in each scene.

And then I discovered that what is almost certainly the same production -- at least it has precisely the same cast, conductor and orchestra -- is available on the Gala label here at Amazon for less than half the price of this issue from Profil. (I think, but am not certain, that this same production was available some years ago on Hänssler which, of course, is the parent label of Profil.)

There appears to be an even older recorded version available with Karl Elmendorff conducting (also with Gottlob Frick, and with Margarete Teschemacher as Katharina), but I've never heard it. Unless it turns out that the present recording is in appreciably better sound than the Gala version -- which I doubt -- I'd suggest that anyone badly wanting to have this opera should buy the less expensive Gala version: Goetz: Der Widerspenstigen Zähmung.
