It's Dreamy.......2007-01-10
This is a very wonderful recording of Stephen Foster by a master singer.
Foster's songs are of a more innocent and naive time in the American psyche, a time that it would not hurt us to remember, given the wretched brutality of American culture today (something you'll appreciate after listening to this recording).
The songs are beautifully sung by Mr. Hamspon, and the musical accompaniment with piano, mandolin, tuba, banjo, etc. seems a perfect setting for this period music. I enjoyed the musical interludes of Foster songs (not sung by Mr. Hampson), such as "Oh, Suzanna", "My Old Kentucky Home", and "Camptown Races." They are foot-stompin' and finger-snappin' good in a non-syncopated way.
Mr. Hampson's voice is so beautiful, and he has done such a wonderful job with these song's you'll just have to hear it, and when you do, tell me that you're not dreaming.
I remember reading a quote by John Phillip Sousa that decried the use of syncopation in American popular music. I never understood it until listening to this recording. The richness and intensity of American popular music (as experienced in the work of Stephen Foster) has been lost.
Everything has to be so cool today, thanks to syncopation, and "cool" really means no emotion.
If emotion is what you want, emotion is what you'll get with Stephen Foster's songs. It was a time when the death of loved ones (especially those who died in their youth) was experienced more often (see "I Dream of Jeannie with the Light Brown Hair" and "Gentle Annie"). And we were not protected from the vicissitudes of fate by myriad government programs, modern medicine and universal prosperity (see "Hard Times").
Husbands and wives had their differences then, as today, (see the amusing song "My Wife is a Most Knowin' Woman") The passion of the Civil War (Foster was a Unionist),is reflected in a wonderful, fun song, "That's What's the Matter."
If you love good music, and you have heart which can be stirred, and you love your country, this is for you.
I love this recording. It has opened up the door to my "beautiful dreams," dreams of bygone days, lost love, and whatever else we pine for.
I wanted to buy several copies for my friends, but somehow I felt that the impact of this recording was so personal, that it could not be shared with others. Not that they couldn't enjoy it, but that I could not begin to share the intense emotion and reverie stirred in my heart by these beautiful songs.
My Favorite Composer of all time.......2006-08-20
Growing up playing his stuff on piano, I love the instrumentality of this CD..the violins give off that wail that he speaks of..I am not sure what it is about Stephen Foster but these verses..grab me like no other..there is so much sensitivity to it..
I dream of Jeannie with the light brown hair
Born like a vapor on the summer air
I see her tripping where the bright streams play
Happy as the daisies that dance on her way
Many were the wild notes her merry voice would pour
but the violins in this CD make this CD the best out there..
FYI should you be into astrology Stephen Foster is definition of Cancer...Sun and Moon conjunct in Cancer with mars in Scorpio..i love his lyrics..almost to the point of obsession..
An American classic from Hampson that brings smiles and tears.......2006-07-17
Stephen Foster was the greatest American composer of sentimental parlor ballads--he so perfectly imitated folk songs that his music wound up turning into them. In an age of home music-making and later of families sitting around the radio, Foster's songs were a staple, often performed by crossover artists from opera like Lawrence Tibbett. Those were plump, ripe styles of singing, highly flavored by church hymns.
In this 1992 collection of 17 Foster favorites, plus a few rareties, Hampson drops the platform manner and goes straight for heartfelt sincerity. His tone is plain yet sweet, his expression intimate. He is accompanied by instruments redolent of the Victorian drawing room (guitar, fiddle, upright piano), and the mood they create brings tears and smiles of remembrance. This music is embedded in America's genes, and it's wonderful to realize that every note is still alive and throbbing with feeling.
OMG!!! More than 10000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 stars, one of the best album in the world!!!.......2005-11-25
Simply one word, WOW!!!
Thomas Hampson's voice is simply fantasic. His voice is very different from regular operatic baritone voice, very sweet, and rich. I really cant believe an operatic baritone can sing folk song like THIS good, in my opinion he sounds even better than his opera works in this album. His voice and the background music matches perfectly, the outcome would move u to tears, and u can feel the origin of MUSIC. This album really shows what the word MUSIC means, and the songs simply just ALL beautiful. I like his "beautiful dreamer", "my life is well knowing woman", and "jeanie with the light brown hair" the most. When I listen the songs I would just imagine that I am in the world of past USA, and I can feel the life of the ppl in the past USA~ just like watching an old classic movie, it would touch ur heart and fall in love with this album.
It's simply lovely.......2004-12-14
I didn't know Stephen Foster (I thought): wrong: Oh Susanna, etc, I knew, but had no idea who the composer was.
This CD is a revelation. The melodies are so beautiful, as are the poems, and Thomas Hampson just brings them to life as wonderfully as ever. I especially love "Beautiful Dreamer" - it gives me butterflies - and "My wife is a most knowing woman" - the way he makes the voices and the indignation is just brilliant. If one needed reminding what a brilliant singer Mr Hampson is - this disk does it.

thanks again, naxos!.......2007-04-04
naxos is the greatest budget label of all-time. i've gotten so many great discs from them, and never a bummer. as for this disc, it's a great idea(arrangements of the songs of stephen foster for 19th century brass band, performed on period instruments), wonderfully executed. i have many recordings of stephen foster material, and this is one of the best. this brass band sounds fantastic and the audio quality is very very fine. i highly recommend that you make this a part of your household.
Stephen Foster Played by a Saxhorn (not saxophone) Quintet.......2004-06-20
Imagine a post-Civil War family trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening to hear the town band play a concert of arrangements of popular tunes, that gentler period's equivalent of a rock concert of today. That's essentially what we have here. The Chestnut Brass Company, a Philadelphia brass quintet which on occasion plays on everything from Baroque sackbuts to the most modern trumpets and trombones, here plays on instuments of the saxhorn family. Saxhorns, invented by Adolphe Sax, the fellow who also invented the better-known saxophone, are brass instruments perfected in the 1840s. Their conical bore projects a uniquely sweet and mellow sound. They were exceedingly popular for town bands during the latter half of the century, but their use had waned by the turn of the 20th century. This quintet consists of an E flat soprano, a B flat soprano, an E flat alto, a B flat baritone, and a E flat contrabass saxhorn. The dulcet tones and sonic blend are a marvel to behold. Partly, of course, this is due to the expert playing by Bruce Barrie, Susan Sexton (or is it SAXton?), Marian Hesse, Larry Zimmerman, and Jay Krush.
Stephen Foster wrote very little purely instrumental music, but his songs fostered (pun unavoidable) innumerable instrumental arrangements. Those heard here are taken (and sometimes re-arranged) from the playbooks of such 19th-century bands as the Manchester, New Hampshire town band, the Boston Brass Band and the brass band of the 26th Regiment of North Carolina, not to forget the U.S. Marine Band. The tunes are arranged into quicksteps, waltzes, marches, schottisches and potpourris. Most of the familiar tunes are here: 'Beautiful Dreamer,' 'I Dream of Jeannie,' 'My Old Kentucky Home,' 'Camptown Races,' 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming,' and 'Some Folks Do' as well as plenty of relatively unfamiliar songs. And because these arrangements come from all over some of the tunes appear several times like old friends. Some of my own favorites are 'Some Folks' arranged by W. L. Baccus, 'Come Where My Love Lies Dreaming' arranged by Bruce Barrie, 'Camptown Quick Step' arranged by Jay Krush, and 'Gentle Annie' from the U.S. Marine Corps Band archives.
As an unabashed fan of the music of Charles Ives, I can't hear these arrangements without wondering which of these tunes Charlie heard (and played) when his own father, a former Civil War bandmaster, led his town band in Danbury, Connecticut.
Recommended for brass band lovers, Stephen Foster fans, and folks who like, say, the sound track to Ken Burns's 'Civil War' PBS documentary.

Customer Reviews:
Souvenir of a distinguished American vocal artist.......2002-03-05
Theodor Uppman's distinguished career ought to have assured him a greater degree of name recognition among American singers than seems to have happened. A mainstay in the lyric baritone repertory at the Met for almost three decades, he is best known for the creation of the title role in Britten's Billy Budd.
This recording catches Uppman in his vocal prime, in opera and song repertory both familiar and unfamiliar, and reminds us that he had a well-schooled, evenly produced voice of considerable tonal beauty. He was also a sensitive interpreter within a certain range. The more familiar operatic excerpts, such as the arias from "Rigoletto" and "Carmen," reveal certain limitations in his ability to pour out refulgent sound that perhaps explain why he did not essay these roles onstage--in the Toreador Song in particular, Uppman indulges in some unlovely blustering, surprising given his concern with maintaining integrity of musical line elsewhere.
Nevertheless, this is a highly enjoyable album, with some unusual repertory. The sound is acceptable period mono and reproduces the voice vividly, the orchestral accompaniments acceptably.
Magnificent performances of appealing repertoire.......2000-08-31
I was drawn to this CD because of the interesting and varied repertoire. Theodore Uppman was not familiar to me, so I had no idea it would be such a beautiful voice with such evenness through the registers, such clear diction, and such sincere and wholehearted involvement with the music. What a find!
The disc is a collection of digitally remastered radio broadcast performances from the Bell Telephone Hour between 1954 and 1957. Hence, the repertoire is intended to appeal to a wide audience, ranging from folk song arrangements ("Danny Boy", which one expects to be beautiful, and "Home on the Range", which surprised me by how good it can sound when sung by a real artist) through Stephen Foster and Alec Wilder to melodic French and Italian opera arias. I don't think there's a single bad performance on the CD, given that the artistic norms are those of the 50's, so "Tu lo sai", for instance, which is the only pre-19th-century piece in the collection, is sung in a romantic style that brings out the lovely melody rather than in the lighter style that we have come to expect since the early-music revival.
If you have any desire to hear rarities like Katherine Davis's setting of Rosemary Benet's "Nancy Hanks", Kurt Weill's setting of Whitman's "Beat! Beat! Drums!", or Celius Dougherty's setting of Carl Sandburg's "Colorado Trail" you absolutely cannot go wrong buying this CD. You will probably never hear them sung better. Among the more mainstream repertoire, I was particularly impressed by Strauss's "Zueignung", which is performed beautifully with attention to the text and phrasing, rather than as a chance to blow away an audience with a big sound (which is how I often hear it sung). Ironically, Jaroslav Kricka's "The Albatross", which was one of the unusual pieces I particularly wanted to hear on this CD, was good, but I didn't like it as well as the performance in French by Povla Frisch, which is the the first one I heard. It is worth noting that Tchaikovsky's "Pilgrim's Song" and Robert Franz's "Widmung" are also sung in English. This may have had as much to do with considerations of audience as of Uppman's linguistic capabilities, because the pieces he does sing in French, German and Italian show that he is comfortable singing in these languages.
I don't know what sort of recording technology was used for these live radio broadcasts originally, but digital remastering can only make up for so much. The sound quality is never annoying (i.e. there are no scratches, pops, or fuzzy spots), but the orchestra does have the sort of flattened, homogeneous sound that, for example, a 50's-era movie soundtrack may have. I didn't find this a hindrance to my enjoyment (in fact it gave it an appealing "period" flavor), but I suppose it might bother some people.
By coincidence, in the same shipment, I ordered the premiere performance of Britten's "Billy Budd" as a study aid. Uppman created the title role in this opera, and, having heard him sing the repertoire on this CD, I am now looking forward to hearing the Britten opera.

Customer Reviews:
Beautiful voice, beautiful heart, beautiful music.......2006-05-10
I bought this disk when I heard the title track on CBC radio. The song in the arrangement by Healy Willan is gorgeous and achingly sad. Edith Wiens won me over immediately with her beautiful voice and the way her singing invites us to feel the love and hurt in the song. It is hard to tell from the words whether it is the love or the hurt that is the greater emotion. The only event I can conceive of that would contain such complete love and utter pain would be the death of one's love, and the words are even more powerful in such a setting.
Ae fond kiss and then we sever
Ae farewell and then forever
Deep in heart wrung tears I'll pledge thee
Warring sighs and groans I'll wage thee
These are words adapated from a poem by Robert Burns, a man who knew how to write.
Imagine my delight when the rest of the disk contained treat after treat. Songs and ballades by Copeland, Ives, Foster, Britten, MacMillan, Lucas, Butterfield, and others. There are art songs and such familiar songs (or were familiar in my generation and earlier) as "Home, Sweet Home", "The Last Rose of Summer", Jeanie with the light brown hair", "Drink to Me Only With Thine Eyes" and more.
Edith Wiens is a wonderful Canadian soprano who grew up as a Mennonite in Vancouver and attended Bible College there. She spent three years in Hanover on scholarship studying music and received her Masters (and later an honorary doctorate) from Oberlin. She sings all over the world and gives well received master classes - I am aware of one at Julliard as well. She has sung major roles in operas including several of Mozart's and her recitals are well loved. Once you hear her voice, you will fall for her singing as well.
