Album Description
One of the most enduring acts in American music, Peter Paul And Mary both defined and transcended the 1960s folk revival. The trio's passionate commitment to peace and social justice made them the conscience of an era as they soulfully communicated political concerns through music in an unprecedented way. At the same time that they reached millions with their social message, they acheived phenomenal mass popularity.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for country song lovers.......2007-07-05
Songs are of high standard. However, the quality of the CD is substandard to the ears of an audiophile fan. Background of the recordings has a bit of noise, not absolutely clear. Overall, a good CD for a sunny day.
Fab Folk Trio's Best.......2007-06-20
You know you're gettin' real old when you have a conversation with 20-something (or even 30-something) friend and you mention Peter, Paul & Mary and the person just gives you a blank stare. I got to thinking about the Fab Folk Trio because the political climate is...well, let's just say--unfortunate (with eerily similiar 1960's overtones.) I also got to thinking about Peter Yarrow's song "The Great Mandala" (on this CD.) Trouble was, for some reason I thought Richie Havens wrote it & that P, P & M were chorus backup--so I kept looking for the original and for lyrics with all the wrong information (yes, sometimes I am prone to air-headedness.) Once again, Amazon comes to the rescue in the end. In fact, I'm beginning to feel like a walking billboard for Amazon--hint, hint--any comps gladly accepted.
Anyway, I held back a star just because there were a couple of songs omitted, such as the trios' haunting rendition of "Polly Vaughn" that I would really have like to have seen included. Oh well, I've been told 'you can't have everything." How 'bout 4 and 1/2 stars?
Hearing "The Great Mandala" again made the search well worth while. It is one of Peter, Paul & Mary's most dramatic & uncompromising hits.
Peace.

One of the best Folk groups in America.........2007-05-17
This is one of the best folk groups in our country. The best in the world although, goes to an Australian group that did everything better than Peter, Paul, and Mary. The Seekers.
I remember listening to PP&M in 74-75. The songs had a magic quality to them, and they are still good. Time hasn't dimmed their quality much.
Peter, Paul, &Mary.......2007-05-13
This is by far The Very Best of Peter, Paul, and Mary. I enjoyed every cut, and often found myself singing along. ( in the privacy of my car ) I would recommend this album to any baby boomer and to their children and grand children

From Amazon.co.uk Review
As fine an album as this might be (and indeed it is), it serves a much higher purpose for which it must be immediately recognised. The twee Swedish trio have single-handedly tugged whistling out of popular music's pits where it was stuffed by German soft metal granddads The Scorpions back in the early 90s. It's not even particularly proficient whistling - it's a bit skewiff really, a little out of tune - but it's tacked onto the irresistibly bobbing, Velvet-Underground-via-The-Concretes infectiousness of "Young Folks", augmented by the warm-ember vocals of ex-Concrete Victoria Bergsman herself, and by association sounds fairly heroic. Accidentally anthemic, perhaps, but anthemic nonetheless. Result.
Which sets a tone for the rest of this off-kilter lo-fi record. Draw a slightly wonky line from Simon & Garfunkel through to The Shins, making sure you take in the sharp Scandinavian indie-pop of the '90s (Wannadies, The Cardigans) and modern day peers (Radio Dept, Shout Out Louds) and you have a folk album that isn't really all that folk, swimming through its own dreamy washes of ambition. The drumming on tracks like "Let's Call It Off" and "Paris 2004" is so elementary you might as well add your own, but it keeps the intuitive, simplistic 60's beat melodies trickling steadily onwards. The underlying appeal is that things could snap like an elastic band at any moment, that things are beautifully limited. Less writers block, more loving the detail of your first chapter so much you have no inclination to move on. --James Berry

Writers Block-buster!.......2007-06-28
This record is beautiful. It could have been a cd of just "Young Folks" being played over and over and i would have been happy but there are plenty of gems here, and you don't have to dig very deep to find them. I highly reccommend this album to anyone who loves life, girls, boys, The Beatles, the crisp morning air tightening your face as you first step out of your building onto the street as city buses shamble by and you feel like you're just on the verge of a some kind of "happening" but it hasn't fully been realised yet- but soon will be.
A little Plain?.......2007-06-27
In my never ending search for new talents I chose this CD from the best list of whatever year it was released (I am in a constant state of light buzz so small details become meaningless). At a first listen I found their sound somewhat simplistic or plain? On the extra tracks I did come across a simple but very nice song about the material which I did enyoy quite a bit. The one with the catchy whistling that I have heard on a music channel on TV is too plain and uneventful but as a whole so far the CD was okey, nothing to die and go to the moon for, good vocals, accessible melodies with about three songs that stood above the rest. One of the songs in the album was this distorted guitars that did not appeal at all, to its credit it did not last very long. Mixed feelings about Peter Bjorn and John, perhaps is the type of music but I have always believed that in the end Music is Music and either you are the best or up there with the best or not. "Writer's Block" so far (only 1 listen) is kind of a lukewarm affair and that does not qualify them as a "sizzling hot" release exactly. 3.5 Stars would be my take, not quite enough to get a 4 stars but hey, who am I to be so judgemental and critical, if they want their 4 stars they can have it. The half star rating is very important because let's say an album is higher that a 4 star but not quite the perfection of a 5 star, what do you do? Go cry to the local lonely hearts club band? Let's just say that if I was giving a party "Writer's Block" could not make it to the rotation, their sound is too Plain? No disrespect intended, just calling them as I see them. No, it is not a 3 star, it's a 3.5 star but since there is none available I choose 4 stars. It does has its moments but it is not a vital, must have so far. There, I said it, either you deliver thrills or just pay bills!
I seriously don't get it..........2007-06-19
I don't understand the praise this album is getting. I have no idea why "young folks" gets played so often on the radio. I can't stand that song. I got the album, not having heard even one bad thing about it, and I honestly do not hear anything redeeming with this group. People tell me that they get a nostalgic feeling while listening to this, but I don't see it. I've wanted to ask people "what do you see in these guys? why do you like this?!?" but I don't want to be rude. But seriously, why is this so popular?
I give it an A.......2007-05-21
Have been hearing the song "Young Folks" on the radio and like it. Decided to buy the whole CD and I sure am glad I did! This is great stuff. A little bit folk, a little bit rock-and-roll, a little bit electronic. "Amsterdam" is a super-interesting, very different song and is my favorite on the album. "Let's Call it Off" is good too. All in all some catchy tunes and a super album.
Jay Leno.......2007-05-19
These two, whom I've never heard before last night, kind of took me back for a moment. I thought I was listening to a new revived Figurine album which is greatly anticipated from that dynamic trio.
I liked the sound, and although faintly mumbled by the poorest sound engineer in Cali. I was able to get a feel for what this Swedish pop group can do. I suggest, if I may, making it yourself.
If you feel the music, live by it, you know they will come to hear it. This group tends to remind me of the smae hope.

Album Description
Founded in the late '60s in Surrey, England, Genesis rose out of the ashes of earlier bands formed by schoolmates Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Michael Rutherford, and Anthony Phillips (who departed after 1969's Trespass, the album providing the final track on this stellar retrospective). Guitarist Steve Hackett soon signed on, as did drummer/vocalist Phil Collins, who'd later emerge (as would Gabriel) as a solo superstar. Following Gabriel's 1975 departure, Genesis grew from a progressive art-rock outfit into one of the biggest arena rock acts ever, with a long string of platinum-sellers and chart smashes. On this, their most comprehensive career-spanning collection to date, Genesis' remarkable evolution is revealed.

A good collection for the begginers like me!!!!!!.......2007-07-04
I never care about Genesis, so I decided to try to listen to them so I just bought this collection. I like it!. My favourite cd was the second one! songs like Abacab, Turn it on again, makes me wants to hear this cd over and over
Great mix for the price!.......2007-06-17
For the price, this collection can't be beat. All the classics, all the hits, from all the different periods of Genesis.
A really good overview of their work.
Good introduction ahead of Genesis' 2007 US tour.......2007-06-07
Economic value: 5 Stars; Compilation: 4 Stars; Packaging: 3 Stars
Now that Genesis has decided to do the (take your pick: dreaded/hoped for) reunion tour this year, starting in Europe shortly, coming to the US later this year, it's time to revisit the only compilation that spans the entire Genesis studio catalogue.
"Genesis Platinum Edition" (3 CDs; 40 tracks; 235 min.) tracks the band's history in reverse chronological order, with one exception: the title track of 1997's "Calling All Stations", which is stuck at the end of CD1 and sounds totally out of place--for many reasons. But for that song, this covers Genesis 1971-1991, and it's amazing what these guys put out in 20 years, and how the band evolved. This compilation is a decent attempt to cover it all. CD1 (16 tracks, 78 min.) covers the band's most successfull years, and many of these tracks are also found on the "Turn It On Again - The Hits" compilation. Am I the only one to think that the songs from 1986's "Invisible Touch" album have aged very poorly? It makes me cringe to listen to them. (Note: "Tonight Tonight Tonight" comes in an edited, short version here.) CD2 (15 tracks, 77 min.) tracks the intermediary years and I was surprised how good these songs resonate still. Check out for example "Abacab" (in the full album version, thankfully), and "In That Quiet Earth/Afterglow", but shamefully "One for the Vine" is missing, one of the band's best tracks ever (and perhaps the best song Tony Banks ever penned). CD3 (9 tracks, 80 min.) covers the Peter Gabriel years (1971-1975), and while I did not mind (and at times greatly enjoyed) Genesis' evolution to a mainstream successful band, this era is still the most compelling for me. Check out "The Cinema Show" and "Supper's Ready" (both here in full length) if you're not familiar with them, you'll be blown away, I promise you.
There is no arguing with the economic value of this compilation: 4 hours of music for $20, you can't beat that. The packaging is a different story: skimpy liner notes, and the booklet is misprinted with pages out of order... I have seen Genesis in concert only once, in Brussels on the 1977 tour for "Wind & Wuthering" and I remember it as if it was yesterday. Unforgettable. While I know that this year's reunion tour is probably a money-grabbing thing, I nevertheless do plan on seeing them when they come to Columbus in September, for nostalgic reasons if nothing else.
What the Turn it On Again collection should`ve been.............2007-05-14
This is, without a shadow of a doubt THE best collection of my favorite band of all time. Disc 1 is what the TIOA CD shoulda been. Not just pure hit machine pop but some great prog like Home by Sea & Mama COMPLETLEY UNEDITED. Also has a hard to find piece called Paperlate remixed.-5 stars. Disc 2 has classics like ABACAB & Turn it on Again totally remixed. it ain`t Genesis at its best but its good.-4.5 stars. Disc 3 is a masterpiece, prog rock greatness with Suppers Ready! Nuff said.-6 stars. steller.
Great musicianship, but can you - honestly - take Phil Collins seriously?.......2007-05-11
Yeah, yeah, yeah, Peter Gabrial, Steve Hackett (later of "GTR," a band Creem Magazine referred to as "SHT"), Tony Banks, Chester Thompson, Mike Rutherford (he of "The Living Years" fam
), and...and...and...Phil Collins. EXCELLENT drummer! But WHY "push the envelope," seeing how annoying he can be? Oh well, "buy the ticket, take the ride," I guess...

If you were challenged to name five rock albums that epitomized the '70s, Frampton Comes Alive! should probably top the list. Former Humble Pie guitarist Peter Frampton recorded a few perfectly fine albums with his band Frampton's Camel, but it wasn't until some of those tracks were recorded at a live performance in San Francisco and released as Frampton Comes Alive! that he became a household name. Buoyant pop, sentimental ballads, arena rock--this album has it all. The double-LP package set sales records and contained three bona fide radio hits ("Baby, I Love Your Way," "Show Me the Way," and "Do You Feel Like We Do?"), one of which, shockingly enough, was over 14 minutes long. No wonder that, to many, the two-and-a-half-minute songs of the Damned and the Sex Pistols felt like a breath of fresh air a year or two later. --Lorry Fleming

A Classic Sensation.......2007-07-01
My father owns many classic rock lps, but when i heard about frampton comes alive it was joyous to notice at times that live rock perfomances are just that much better, this here is one of framptons finest piece of work
It takes me back.......2007-06-27
Have you ever heard a song that totally transports you back to a significant time in your past? Well, that's what Peter Frampton's "Comes Alive" album, excuse me, CD does for me. Back when I was 17 and riding around with my high school buddies, going to somebody's house after the football games for parties. Hanging out. The entire collection of songs causes me to have such feelings of nostalgia because it is such a great grouping of songs that Frampton does so well. Put it on, real loud if you can and sit back and let the music wash over you and see if you can feel 17 again.
Frampton Comes Alive.......2007-04-04
This is the only copulation by Peter Frampton that you want to own.
No other releases by Frampton measure up to this one. He made one great copulation of recordings ever. This is it. After this he Petered' Out!
Excellent.......2007-02-05
It was great on LP when I bought it in the 70's and even better now on CD.
great album -- more to frampton than you think.......2007-01-19
i always thought of frampton as a heart-throb with one big album in the 70s.
then i listened to this and -- WOW! Frampton is a superb guitar player with a unique sound (this album made it famous); an impeccable songwriter as well as a charismatic and, ok, good looking lead singer.
when you go past this album, you realize that frampton has a solid track record of pop songwriting & impeccable musicianship.

4 ½ stars.......2007-06-04
From Charlap's solo choruses in "Rocker," at once burning hot and supremely cool, to the wistful "Last Night While We Were Young," this is an absorbing and sometimes startlingly good record. Although it doesn't seem right that Charlap tends to get most of the attention - i.e. the focus on Charlap in interviews about the trio's work, his lone cover photo here, and some critics' annoying habit of dubbing the unrelated bassist and drummer "the two Washingtons"- he really is a fine player. His solos are consistently interesting and invigorating; his technique is impressive; and how about the way he uses the piano? Even if one may grow weary of a certain right hand tremolo/trill effect as transitional device, Charlap's quiet but hip comping, use of lower registers, piano-rattling glissandi, and superimposition of left hand and right hand are extremely effective and rather unique. So too are his undulating lines, at once muted and strong, and his enviable ability to create a translucent, ethereal musical space. It is for these reasons that "Autumn in New York" garnered such a reverent response from the Vanguard audience - and "My Shining Hour" such a raucous one.
Speaking of "My Shining Hour," let me not be guilty of the same Charlap-centered commentary I lamented earlier. As the liner notes point out, "the incandescent playing captured here is made possible by trust," a trust which in turn is only possible thanks to the rock-solid foundation provided by Peter Washington on bass and the combustible energy released by Kenny Washington on drums. Although I feel that Peter has not yet been ideally captured on recording, it is quite evident from this album and others that Kenny sets the fire under the band and leads them to "Shining Hour" heights. The very swinging feel of a potentially square tune like "Rocker" and potentially static arrangement of "While We're Young," as well as "Last Night While We Were Young's" magical coda, owe much to Kenny's fire, too.
It should be no surprise, then, that numbers like "Lady is a Tramp" cook when the Charlap Trio plays `em, and ballad arrangements like "All Across the City" are so good they almost hurt. But "While We're Young" also provides indisputable proof that this group can play in 3. So let's hear some more waltzes, and more of that glorious ebb and flow that another pianist named Bill inspired at the same Village Vanguard :) How about more bass and drum solos too?!? (come now, 2 bass solos and 1 drum solo really are not enough for a whole album). Then, consider the possibilities of straight 8, Latin, funk, mixed meter...you know these guys can do it. To me, this would make a visit to see them at the Vanguard or Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola that much more memorable - and their group that much better.
A Great Snapshot of an Excellent Trio.......2007-06-01
After many years of widespread acclaim as one of the best working groups in mainstream jazz, the Bill Charlap Trio has finally issued its first live recording, and the results are most impressive. Individually, the group's members are all virtuoso musicians of the highest caliber, and in any setting they can be counted upon to deliver vivid, engaging performances (see for example Charlap's collaborations with Warren Vaché and Peter Washington's work with the great Tommy Flanagan). However, when they play together their rapport is so strong that each seems to bring out the best in the others, and even on the trio's studio recordings they sometimes attain a level of controlled intensity that is downright mesmerizing, both on uptempo numbers and on slow ballads. Here, they reach that level again and again, and the interplay among them is consistently thrilling; each plays with great energy and creativity, but also with great precision, and they are so perfectly attuned to one another that when they improvise together they do so with a degree of cohesion and unity that is nothing short of astonishing. ("My Shining Hour" provides an especially good example of this.) Their own enjoyment of what they can do is both palpable and infectious, and while they never indulge in the kind of showboating that sometimes mars live recordings, the presence of an attentive and appreciative audience does seem to inspire them. The sounds made by that audience are not the least bit obtrusive, but their applause helps to create a pleasant atmosphere of immediacy, as does the immaculate sound achieved by engineer Joel Moss. The disc is also nicely programmed, though there are fewer rarities than one might expect given Charlap's extensive knowledge of the American songbook and his penchant for reintroducing overlooked but worthy material.
In all, this is a most welcome document of an exceptional group in action. It is also long overdue, so let's hope that volume two will follow in short order!

Customer Reviews:
a surprising offer.......2007-07-05
Complete works of Mozart for such a price is a surprising offer. We are pleased of the good quality, and the availability of otherwise difficult to find works of Mozart
Welcome to Perfection.......2007-06-28
Dispite what anyone else says, if god ever tried to talk to humanity it was through Wolfgang because his music is absolute perfection. It is the most beautiful music i've ever heard in my life( and this is coming from a 21 year old metal-head ).If one has second thoughts about buying this collection dispell them right now because this is probably the first item i've bought in a long time that i have not regreted.
Buy this as an encyclopedia of Mozart, then add other recordings..........2007-06-22
Brilliant Classics Complete Mozart edition, released for the 250th anniversary year of Mozart's birth (he was born in 1756), has much to recommend it. It contains almost all the works of Mozart, and has many fine performances: the piano sonatas by Klara Wurtz, Piano Concertos by Derek Han, Paul Freeman/Philharmonia, The Magic Flute, conducted by Charles Mackerras (licensed from Telarc), String Quartets by the Franz Schubert Quartet (Licensed from Nimbus) each stand out. The Symphonies, by the Amsterdam Mozart Academy/ Jaap ter Linden, are "So-so": I don't like the small period ensemble, but Symphonies 20, 40 (both versions: one with clarinets and the other without), 23, 24, and 34 are pretty good. Symphonies 1:I, 25 and 41 are sub-par: scrappy playing and weak violins make for a pretty rough experience. I would supplement this with the complete Mozart Symphonies by Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (DG), among the best recordings of these works, and the best complete set of Mozart's Symphonies, completed in 1968.
The Requiem, conducted by Nicol Matt (2001 recording) has had better performances, and for this I would recommend Bohm/Vienna Philharmonic (DG) and Colin Davis/London Symphony (Philips), which use a larger choir and orchestra, and have more drama where it is needed. The other choral works conducted by Nicol Matt are better, especially "Exsultate Jubilate" motet, the short Masses, and "Ave Verum".
Also worthy of mention are the "Posthorn" and "Haffner" Serenades, by Colin Davis/Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, licensed from Novalis for this release.
This is a great overview, and Brilliant Classics are to be commended for making it available at a low price, to get Mozart's music out to the mass public. It's a great buy, but I would get the Bohm Symphonies, and also Piano Concertos by either Ashkenazy/Philharmonia (Decca), Perahia/English Chamber Orchestra (Sony) or Anda/Mozarteum Orchestra of Salzburg (DG) for supplements. Also, Karl Bohm's recordings of the operas: The Magic Flute, the Marriage of Figaro, Idomeneo, and La Clemenza di Tito (all DG) are required listening, too. Recommended, but not as the only recording of Mozart's works.
Great value..Cant beat this deal at all!!!.......2007-06-13
As others have reviewed the product and highlighted that there are a few poor pieces... But who cares when there is 170 discs.. if you had have 10 cds that are poor quality and had a 160 disc set of good cd's and you paid $90 for the set.. would you be happy? I would think so... So don't get frustrated and just buy the set.. Enjoy the music for the price.. I am not going to go into details like others did but just buy the set!
Incredible Bargain.......2007-06-10
This offer is an incredible bargain at just over 50 cents a CD. The price jumps around often - you can sometimes get it for $4 or $5 less. but still at 50 cents. Mine arrived in excellent shape - it's hard for them to do otherwise. The way they are packaged they are either in good shape or some major disaster has happened destroying a whole bunch. Those I have played sound great. It will probably take a life time to play them all. Meanwhile we can just revel in our riches and feel all warm and fuzzy.
I also own the Bach set and am wildly happy with that as well.

This is an astonishing collection of works - or parts of works - by Mozart that covers almost every aspect of his creative output: symphonic, religious music, concerti (for piano, horn, violin, clarinet, flute), chamber music, serenades (for strings; winds), a couple of opera overtures and more. Those who know and love Mozart's music will not need this, but it's a great introduction, a great overview. The selections are well-chosen and interestingly organized, with familiar pieces splrinkled among some not-so well known. A good primer. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
How can you go wrong with Mozart?...Buy this and find out........2007-05-13
I was extraordinarely ignorant when I purchased this recording. I thought,"WOW!! Look at all the music you get in this CD set. The price cannot be beat!" When I received the CD, I discovered that you don't really get any music at all. This is a great sample CD, and should be bought by a person brand new to classical music. However, if you have any experience with classical music, you will want to pass on this CD.
Each of the pieces are hacked apart to the point of it being comical. It's interesting to listen to the greatest music in the world, only to have the development cut. All of a sudden I was thrust into a new key, I thought my ears were going crazy. Perhaps an effort by a decent high school orchestra, but this music is not up to snuff with any other recording.
Do yourself a favor and go out and purchase real recordings of Mozart, and not watered down stereotypes.

Wonderful collection and price!.......2007-05-11
I found this to be a nice collection of favorites, especially to keep in the car and listen to. It is a variety of well known compilations. Although not encompassing, it is perfect as a review for driving, relaxing, and enjoyment. Plus, the price is right!
Nice Mozart selection - Nice price.......2006-09-24
Nice selection of Mozart work that give us inner peace...
Mozart Listener.......2006-08-31
This is a good CD if you like Mozart's music. It is not the best CD I ever purchased. It is nice to listen to it in the morning before I go to work. And I sometimes listen to it in the evening before I go to bed. It is relaxing and soothing. I am not a music major or therapist. This is the best review I can write. Mary Agnes Cross

Customer Reviews:
Great telling of a classic story as a classical music introduction.......2007-01-04
I remember being introduced to the idea of classical music telling a story with Peter and the Wolf many, many years ago. As each character in the story appears, its theme (and the instrument playing it) is introduced. Then the story takes over and builds to its climax and resolution with just the right amount of fright and humor for 2-4 year-olds.
Peter is clearly presented as a child who is disobedient and mildly punished for it, but then he is also brave and resourceful in fixing the situation he has caused. Finally is also merciful to the wolf (although he does put the wolf in a zoo, if that really bothers you). So the story has some subtle hints at morality without it being too oppressive.
In this CD version, the narration is clear and the pacing seems very adequate for even 2 year-old's attention. They often ask to hear it again, and they love the picture book I bought to go with it - see another review. They know all the instruments names, and can identify the characters just from hearing the music.
Excellent for kids and adults.......2006-11-04
A very good version of the original. Bowie's voice is just right and the orchestra is right on. Excellent to demonstrate to kids the different instruments in a orchestra and a good story as well. I listened to it when I was young and also now when I am old. It still is great to listen to the music and the story telling.
Dont have this CD but have the vinyl.......2004-05-26
I admit I do not have this CD, but I do have the vinyl version of this album. It contains just the first two pieces, Peter and Britten's Young Person's Guide... It was released by Columnbia on green translucent vinyl! Combine that with the Red Label that Columbia used and it is quite the colorful Album... I remember that I bought the album for the Britten, big Britten fan here, and partially the novelty of Bowie narrating Peter. The Britten is great, and Peter is very good with the beauty of the Philly strings, which has always been Philly's strong point. If I were looking to replace my vinyl copy, which I am not, I would not hesitate to get this disk.
My son's discovery of classical music.......2003-05-17
My son's growing obsession with this story has truly sprouted since the purchase of this album.
Oddly enough, I never really knew this story or I don't remember it from my childhood, but once my dear sweet boy discovered it's haunting and charging sound, it's become a staple in my vehicle.
A perfect way to introduce classical music to any child -- tell them a story and have all the parts of the story be different instruments from an orchestra. Beautiful, just beautiful..
David Bowie tells us a fearful story.......2002-08-09
Prokofiev here produces a rare and fresh musical story for children. A young boy decides one day to push the gate at the bottom of the garden and move into the big wild world and its dangers, a wolf and a cat. The boy is followed by his friend the duck and meets his other friend the bird who is saved by a split-hair chance from the teeth of the cat by Peter's cry of alarm. All dangers in the world are not from the deep forest. But a far worse danger comes from there : the wolf. If Peter is saved by his grandfather who takes him home, the duck is less lucky and ends up in the wolf's stomach. But Peter is looking after things with the help of the bird and they catch the wolf that is then taken to the zoo by the hunters. We are not always saved from dangers by big strong armed men, but mostly by our courage and inventive imagination. And the music tells us to be creative.
This tale is perfectly served by David Bowie's both deep and volatile voice that finds here a brand new field of artistic achievement and multiplies the music's real dramatic dimension, like a confidential story told to the listeners in their deepest ears as if he were an elfish fairy any kid would believe to be true and safe, in a word friendly.

This remake of the 1996 Japanese film that set unlikely box office records in its native country turns more on a sexy, cinematic dance revivalism than the charms of stars Richard Gere and Jennifer Lopez. While its soundtrack never veers far from that noble task, it gratifyingly jolts its familiar rumbas and tango rhythms with a few modern musical kicks all its own. Pussycat Dolls' crisp, sensuous take of the standard "Sway" may subtly juice tradition, but Gotan Project's "Santa Maria" gives those familiar Latin rhythms a downright savory electronica makeover. Producer/arranger John Altman underscores tradition via his versions of chestnuts both lively ("Happy Feet") and ethno-apropos ("Espana Cani," "Perfidia," "Andalucia") and even a suitably schmaltzy cover of Mancini's signature "Moon River." Altman's sturdy musical background helps focus songs as diverse as Peter Gabriel's bittersweet "The Book of Love" and Gizelle O'Cole/Pilar Montenegro's vibrant, modern Latin-inflected title song, Jamie Cullum's club-beat-meets-lounge take on "I Could Have Danced All Night" and Miya's slinky, hip-hop seasoned remake of Bowie's "Let's Dance." --Jerry McCulley
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, happy music..........2007-06-13
I watched the original Japanese version of this movie first, and enjoyed the cultural feel of it, as well as the elegant dancing. I was worried when I heard they were doing an American remake, but found it to be very enjoyable, capturing the spirit of the original while making it more playable to a western audience. The soundtrack is a major part of the movie, and this CD rendering is very fulfulling. It has most of the major songs used in the movie as both background and actual dance routines. The Pussycat Dolls' take on Dean Martin's "Sway" is particularly catchy and energetic, and makes for a great Cha-Cha (I know this; I've actually danced to it). Also, "Santa Maria (Del Buen Ayre)" by Go Tan Project is a beautiful, sensual, emotionally-charged Tango that will make you want desperately to get up and dance. This soundtrack covers songs with multiple emotions, and is great for listening to, and also, for dancing to. I highly recommend it for lovers of dance, music, or just the movie.
One of the best soundtracks ever........2007-05-01
This soundtrack cought the soul of the movie. I know, sounds cheesy, but if you've seen the movie and it made you want to get up and dance, this is the soundtrack for you! Every song captures the feelings of the movie. I listened to this non-stop for two days straight it seemed. If you loved the movie, it is a must buy!
Great entertanment!.......2007-02-21
I missed this movie when it was released, and caught it late one night
when I was "flicking". It is perfect entertainment--clean, funny, and
thoughtful. For those who say it is "cornpone", I would agree, but that
only makes it more interesting in this age of instant gratification. Go
ahead, take a chance on it. I've shown it to every member of my family-
(and that includes all ages) and they have all loved it.
Direct All Praise To The TRUE Author.......2007-02-04
I am only commenting on this album to make one thing clear: The Book of Love was NOT written by Peter Gabriel (a myth which is so far being perpetuated due to the ignorance of the fools praising Mr. Gabriel's performance). It was written by STEPHIN MERRITT; more specifically, it can be found on Merritt's band, The Magnetic Fields' album, 69 Love Songs, Volume 1. Why Peter Gabriel gets so much credit for turning a beautiful song into a somniferous cacophony is beyond me.
Yes. Go Dancing !.......2007-01-12
I've bought this CD due to Peter Gabriel peformance. Very romantic !
Good musics, good entertainment !
If you like to dance go ahead !!

A judiciously-selected two-CD compendium of Peter Gabriel's finest moments, Hit offers a far more generous windfall than can be found on the only previous Peter Gabriel best-of selection, the 1990 Shaking the Tree. The devil, after all, is in the detail, particularly on the second disc (self-deprecatingly entitled Miss), which really traverses the whole gamut of Peter Gabriel's globally-visioned artistry. It includes recent soundtrack work (the haunting "Cloudless" from Long Walk Home: Music from the Rabbit-Proof Fence), material from 2002's sterling Up ("Signal To Noise", featuring a compelling vocal from the late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and some ominous string arrangements, really does sound like a thinking man's Massive Attack) and goes right back to that fourth album when marrying the reticence of cold, synthesised new wave with insistent African percussion seemed like a good idea (it was). The first disc--including the MTV smash "Sledgehammer", anti-apartheid war cry "Biko", "Big Time" (interesting how the styles of Gabriel and his former group Genesis seem to converge at this time) and "Games Without Frontiers"--really speaks for itself, although with hindsight it seems the single-buying public-at-large had a particular taste for a certain kind of Peter Gabriel record. Universally excellent throughout, the collection is rendered even more desirable by the inclusion of three previously unreleased tracks: a live rendition of "Downside Up", a shorter version of "Blood of Eden" and "Burn You Up, Burn You Down", latterly included on a video game and initially earmarked for the Up album but jettisoned at the last minute. --Kevin Maidment

PETER GABRIEL DARED TO BE DIFFERENT MUSICALLY, ON HIS TERMS AND LEFT HIS MARK IN ROCK HISTORY BECAUSE OF IT!.......2007-07-07
I will be writing a review on the legendary 2-CD greatest hits compilation album entitled "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" by one of Rock's all-time greatest legendary solo artists ever. I give you one of Britain's favorite sons, M-R. P-E-T-E-R G-A-B-R-I-E-L! "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" was originally released in 2003 on Compact Disc on the Geffen Records label which is distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Corporation. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the overall best informative and most accurate review possible.
PETER GABRIEL will forever go down in Rock n' Roll history and be remembered for singing some of Rock's all-time greatest anthems as the frontman for the legendary band GENESIS. However, his stint with GENESIS would not last very long. GABRIEL would soon quit the band GENESIS favoring and venturing out on his own with a solo career that would definitely prove successful. As a successful solo artist, GABRIEL will also forever be remembered for composing and recording some of the 80's all-time greatest Rock anthems ever. With this in mind, GABRIEL would record many great hit songs and albums as a successful solo artist during the period from the 1977-2003 years. In my opinion, in 1986, GABRIEL would deliver to Rock n' Roll one of the 80's unforgettable all-time greatest anthems ever. I'm talking about the legendary Rocker "Sledgehammer" released in 1986. What ROBERT PALMER did in 1985 with his legendary 80's Rock anthem "Addicted To Love," PETER GABRIEL would do the exact same thing with "Sledgehammer" in 1986. Which now brings me to the legendary compilation album I'm about to review for all of you today. "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" chronicles and highlights all of the great hit songs that PETER GABRIEL composed and recorded during the 1977-2003 period. In my opinion, this legendary compilation is without a doubt, a true testament of the brilliance and musical creativity of a masterminded genius. This legendary compilation album is also a fine fitting tribute to a great legendary artist that was truly indeed, far ahead of his time. This is the tales in the life of MR. PETER GABRIEL, his music is his story that speaks for itself.
It is now time to let the Rock n' Roll music of PETER GABRIEL to speak for itself and back it up musically as he originally truly intended for it to be. DISC ONE of "PETER GABRIEL, THE DEFINITIVE TWO CD COLLECTION" begins with the soothing synthesized and acoustic turned mild Rocker "Solsbury Hill," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's anthem "Shock The Monkey," the forever GABRIEL stamped trademark 80's Rock anthem "Sledgehammer," the beautifully slow heavenly and uplifting synthesized number "Don't Give Up," the groundbreaking synthesized mild Rocker "Games Without Frontiers," the danceable synthesized mild Rocker "Big Time," the bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Burn You Up, Burn You Down," the incredible bass pounding synthesized Rocker "Growing Up," the amazing synthesized slow/medium Rocker "Digging In The Dirt," the beautifully slow and well arranged synthesized number "Blood Of Eden," the powerfully mild and synthesized slow masterpiece "More Than This," this is one of GABRIEL'S many great experimental songs that succeeded, "Biko," the breathtaking synthesized Rocker "Steam," the beautifully slow turned medium/fast and well arranged 80's Rock anthem, "Red Rain" and the beautifully slow number with the accompaniment of the piano, "Here Comes The Flood." END OF DISC ONE.
DISC TWO takes right where DISC ONE left off with the incredibly sounding and synthesized slow song "San Jacinto," the fantastic synthesized, bass pounding Progressive Rocker "I Don't Remember," another great GABRIEL experimental song that was successful, "The Rhythm Of The Heat," the beautifully slow/medium smooth song "Loved To Be Loved," the slow synthesized number turned into a mild danceable Rocker "I Grieve," the incredibly sounding synthesized number "Family Snapshot," the slow synthesized "In Your Eyes," another beautiful slow song with the piano arrangement, "The Drop," the incredibly sounding synthesized Progressive rocker "The Tower That Ate People," the slow and smooth bass pounding and synthesized number "Lovetown," another beautifully slow song with the synthesizer and piano, "Father, Son," the name of this song is self explanatory and says it all, "Signal To Noise," the incredible live recording sung with Melanie Gabriel, "Downside Up" and the smooth synthesized and acoustic mild song "Cloudless." END OF DISC TWO. May I also add that PETER GABRIEL'S voice was perfect and on fire while laying down the vocal tracks for all of these hit songs. In my opinion, listening to all of GABRIEL'S songs makes me wonder why he ever left GENESIS. GENESIS' music sounds very similar to GABRIEL'S. Even PHIL COLLINS' solo recordings sound like GENESIS and GABRIEL'S. Whatever the reason may be, all of their music sounds great.
In my opinion, this music collection or at least on DISC TWO, this type of music might not go well with the majority of the youth today, I MAY BE WRONG. There are great hit songs on this legendary album worthy of checking out. If you like GENESIS or PHIL COLLINS, you can definitely relate to and get into the sounds and music of PETER GABRIEL. I would like to recommend purchasing this 2-CD compilation album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. In doing this, you will have taken a giant step in owning and starting your very own personal PETER GABRIEL music collection. You can do all of your album purchases either on Amazon com or at your nearest local Borders Books and Music store.
In closing, PETER GABRIEL has successfully continued in recording and releasing new albums along with touring and performing to sell-out audiences the world over up to this very day. In my opinion, Rock n' Roll needs someone like PETER GABRIEL to come up with mindblowing sounds and music that is new, fresh and original to floor his fans and audiences with. What I admire about PETER GABRIEL is that he doesn't copy anyone else's music, his music has and always will be different and original. Knowing this, GABRIEL'S musical creativity formula has proven to be successful and I know for fact that PETER GABRIEL is here to stay and isn't going anywhere anytime soon. I also get the feeling that GABRIEL still feels that he truly needs to give and deliver more incredible creative music to the whole world. PETER GABRIEL has forever left his place and mark in Rock n' Roll history and his many contributions, accomplishments and achievements will never be forgotten or denied. There will also be many new tales and stories in the GABRIEL legend and legacy that will still need to be written in pages and chapters. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will just have to stay tuned and read further more about it at a later date. So here's to you PETER. Thanks for the many great memories and moments with many more still yet to come. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," need I say more? Thanks for reading my review and I truly hope that you have enjoyed reading it as much as I have truly enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also deeply hope that all of you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. PETER GABRIEL RULES! Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever in Rock, John L.
perhaps a good into to Gabriel....?.......2007-04-14
Going back to Genesis in the early 70's I've been a big fan of Gabriel. If you've heard any of these tunes on the radio, or otherwise, you might want to start with this hit 2 CD offering. Can't comment on the bad engineering since I do not have this CD (no need since I have most all of Peter's previous offerings. Always great production and interesting textures, lyrics, arrangements in Gabriel's music. A few of my top album choices would be UP, SO, melted face, 1st album w/ salsbury hill. He's even better in concert...Amazing is the word.
One Of The Great Gifted Artists Of Our Times.......2007-03-24
You will probably never hear a more diverse and consistently brilliant Hits collection than this tour de force from Peter Gabriel. Most of his best known songs (not all, alas) are here: Biko, Don't give up, Steam, Solisbry Hill, Games without frontiers, Sledgehammer etc are all on Disc 1 which is subtitled: HIT. But it is Disc 2, subtitled MISS that is more rewarding as it showcases songs like Rhythm of the Heat, Family Snapshot, Cloudless, Downside Up, Father Son and San Jacinto. Two new tracks are BURN YOU UP BURN YOU DOWN (good funky stuff!) and CLOUDLESS (sublime reworking of the song SKY BLUE featuring vocals from the Blind Boys From Alabama)
There are always songs you would like to see on a Hits package and some that could be jettisoned and this album is no exception. I cannot understand why SHAKING THE TREE is not included. This is a song he co-wrote with Youssou N'Dour and there is a remastered version on his earlier hits album, also called Shaking The tree. It is a wonderful song in praise of Women with a gentle voal by Gabriel. Must be a legal reason or maybe a falling out with Youssou. One of his classic songs: IN YOUR EYES is buried on the MISS side and that is on the USA version. It is not even included on the European version. That is an amazing oversight. Also songs like LOVE TO BE LOVED from US is reather boring and does not belong here. He could have included from the same album, KISS THAT FROG, COME TALK TO ME or SECRET WORLD, especially the live version which way surpasses the studio version. Also SKY BLUE or an edited version of THE BARRY WILLIAMS SHOW from UP might have been a better selection than I GRIEVE. It would have been great to merge SKY BLUE and CLOUDLESS together for one magnificent closing track. The really weird THE TOWER THAT ATE PEOPLE, LOVETOWN and THE DROP could also have been left off so earlier PG material could have been presented. INTRUDER is not included and nothing from Peter Gabriel 2, although DIY is on the European version as is NO SELF CONTROL and I HAVE THE TOUCH. There are cut versions of some songs which actually help in the case of BLOOD OF EDEN, GROWING UP and MORE THAN THIS. Maybe STEAM could have been edited also as it is on the long side. Hopefully an anthology is on the way to encompass all relevant Peter Gabriel tracks.
BAD Remaster.......2007-02-17
While I ordered this set primarily for the song selection (I only had "So") I was eagerly awaiting the newly remastered sound.
Friggin' HORRIBLE remaster job. I can compare sledgehammer from this set and from "So" side by side and this set's version sounds awful. The mastering guy cranked all of the mid-range and treble up way too high and ruined almost every song on here. There is a major peak from 2Khz-6Khz. I get a headache after about 10 minutes of listening. Extremely harsh sounding vs. the softer orignal recording.
What a dissappointment. This thing will sit on the shelf. I have had this bad experience with more than a few remasters. If you are any type of audiophile, skip this and try to find the originals. Bummer.
Good Music.......2007-01-04
I am a Peter Gabriel fan, good music, If they put all the songs that were great on 1 cd or even 2 thier will be little money to be made.
I listen and enjoy this set.
