Calling this recording, as Chandos does, The Unknown Shostakovich is somewhat misleading. Only about 6 minutes on the disc are devoted to original works--an entr'acte for another composer's opera and 2 early piano preludes (from the little-known Opus 2) in Alfred Schnittke's orchestrations. The major offerings are Shostakovich's reorchestrations of cello concertos by his student, Boris Tischenko, and by Robert Schumann. The latter was written at the request of Mstislav Rostropovich, who was unable to convince orchestras in the West to learn a new and more difficult set of parts for a standard work. Shostakovich composed several nervous, Mahler-like passages for the woodwinds, and added the harp and trumpets, absent in the original. Tishchenko (born 1939) scored his Cello Concerto No. 1 for 17 brass and woodwind instruments in addition to percussion and organ. Shostakovich feared the cello would be completely covered by the brass. Ten years later, he offered this new version, with strings substituting for organ and English horn for low trumpet, as a gift to his former student upon his 30th birthday. Ivashkin, warmly supported by conductor and orchestra, plays both works affectingly. --Stephen Wigler
