Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly good.......2007-01-18

If you're interested in reviewing a fine selection of Bach's music for young voices, this is it. Included are numerous choirs performing choral pieces along with an equal number of solos. The age and quality of the original recordings is a minor issue to me, though it may matter to others. A few bucks brings a lot of Bach.

4 out of 5 stars Bach by Leonhardt and Harnoncourt.......2005-03-16

Good stuff. I have many of these peices separately in other CDs of Bach's cantatas under the direction of Leonhardt and Harnoncourt. The boy sopranos in this cd are wonderful. Great balance between instrumentalists and vocalists is a hallmark of the Harnoncourt/Leonhardt style. I highly recommend this CD.

I welcome feedback on this and all reviews at wstrnlibwarrior@yahoo.com

4 out of 5 stars Can't go wrong with this singing.......2002-11-30

These are undoubtedly beautiful perfomrance, notably on the choral works. The tempo isn't too fast nor too slow, and the balance between "authentic" and modern use of intrumentation is nearly ideal.
However:
Shopper, you may not be aware of this but Harnaocourt/leonhart (the conductors of this album) have produced a nearly comprehensive 60 CD bach cantata set. So why did they choose these oft heard cantatas when there are several performances in their collection surperior to these. I highly recommend listening to their cantata no.80 (not found on this CD).
All in all this is a great CD.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful, if you don't already have these!.......2001-02-17

The quality of these pieces and performances is exceptional (assuming you like the 1970s-style attempts at authentic performance). This disk was the first of my Harnoncourt / Leonhardt purchases; unfortunately, every single one of these is now also sitting in my rack inside the (complete) cantata from whence it was taken. All sung in German, of course, except for the B minor mass, which is sung in Latin.

But everyone must start somewhere, and this is a fantastic place to start. Among other things, it contains (numbers from):

* The Matthew Passion

* The Christmas Oratorio

* Cantata 147, which contains "Jesu Joy of man's desiring"

* The B minor Mass

* My Heart ever Faithful (Mein glaubiges Herze) - lovely.

It's a great gift idea for the subversion of friends and family who seem on the brink of becoming Bach afficionados, especially if they like choral/vocal music.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely.......2000-12-04

If you enjoy the music of Bach and/or the sound of boy sopranos then you will enjoy this CD. It presents some of Bach's best and best loved songs, sung with expert precision by some very fine boy sopranos--a few of them have truly beautiful voices, and all of them are good. There is a good balance of solo pieces and chorales sung by men and boys together. One word, though: if you are accustomed to British or American boy singers then you will find these continental European ones something quite different--the boys are trained in a style more similar to opera singers and their voices are have more vibrato than their English counterparts--the sound is perhaps less "angelic", but fuller and richer. This is a worthy purchase for any true Bach fan or someone who really appreciates the beauty of an unchanged male voice. Top-rate quality of singing throughout.

There are certain musical monuments to Western civilization that no music lover should be without, at least in part. These include Haydn's symphonies and string quartets, Mozart's piano concertos, Handel's oratorios, Beethoven's string quartets and piano sonatas, Scarlatti's keyboard sonatas, and this, perhaps the biggest monument of all, the Bach sacred cantatas. About 200 of them survive and at least 100 are lost. All of them consist of a series of arias, choruses, and hymns based on sacred texts. Bach had to compose a new one every week for several years, and what makes the music so amazing is not only its quantity, but its sheer quality. There is literally no such thing as "bad" Bach, and this series of performances not only stands as one of the great achievements in the history of recording, it introduced many listeners to the fascinating sound of "authentic instruments." Is this set too much of a good thing? Nah! --David Hurwitz

5 out of 5 stars Harnoncourt.......2005-09-24

The big CD collection of Harnoncourt is really to recommend to everybody who is interested in.
It is a wonderful collection, with alle the works of Bach. The whole Box is amazing and every song is fantastic.
It also looks very good wehn you put it into the shelf.
The price is really justified in accord to the number of CD and the quality you get.

4 out of 5 stars As Close as I can Imagine for Authentic Bach.......2005-08-02

If you like your Bach with a heavy Bernstein beat, operatic sopranos, and a huge concert hall sound, or in contrast if you would like to hear Bach as his parishoners did, then these recordings are probably not for you. If you want excellent recordings of the Bach Cantatas using period instruments and boys' voices, to include the occasional flaw, then this discounted, but still pricy set is for you. Here, for the first time, anyone can explore and study the marvels of Bach's Jahrgaenge close to the way it was meant to be heard.

When one considers that Bach had to produce a new cantata each week, and that the performers were local musicians, then one should not expect a perfect performance. When one recalls that the Cantata merely served to reinforce the message of the week according to the church calendar, one should not expect consistently brilliant music. To this, add the fact that the parishioners would have much preferred someone not so old fashioned as Bach to produce their church music. Set up so perfectly for failure, Bach produced some of the most perfect music ever written. Here, bad Bach does not exist.

The use of boys' voices is brilliant. A boy soprano simply does not sound like a woman. A good boy soprano's voice is clear and pure, without the extreme tremolo found in "trained women sopranos." The result is Bach at its purest.

In the mid to late 1950's, preforming Bach on original instruments became an interesting experiment. One group attempting this was the Bach Aria Group, directed by Frank Brief, who performed at the Town Hall in New York City. Over a two year span, Mr. Brief decided that it might be interesting to use a boy's choir instead of a women's choir once each year. He chose the Columbus Boychoir (now called the American Boychoir) of which I was a member for those two occasions. From the critical reviews, the results were very well accepted. Mr. Brief, however, did not go the full way. Instead of using boy soprano soloists, he called on women sopranos such as Beverly Sills. While they gave outstanding performances, it was not "original Bach." But when we asked why didn't he use a boy soprano, Mr. Brief responded that boys' voices could not be sufficiently trained to do Bach justice.

These recordings belie this judgement. Bach did know what he was doing! Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Recording's Greatest Achievement.......2003-04-14

Had this set not been made, then the history of performance practice in the last quarter of the 20th century and beyond would have proceeded very differently. Had this set not been made we would not have many of the current leading figures in the field of early music performance, nearly all of whom were in some way connected with the performance revolution which found its most profound expression in these recordings. For it was during the 14 or so years of this recording project (between 1971 and 1985) that three of the greatest musicians of our time, Gustav Leonhardt, Nikolaus Harnoncourt and Frans Bruggen forever altered the public's perception of the surviving remnants of Bach's fabled, but rarely heard, "Jahrgaenge", or yearly cycles of church cantatas. For this reason alone, this recording is of profound importance.

Leonhardt, with his consort in Amsterdam, and Harnoncourt, with his Concentus Musicus of Vienna shared the task of recording, with an unmatched team of vocal and instrumental soloists, Bach's roughly 200 surviving "concerti sacri", perhaps a further hundred being lost to us. It was a repertoire more honoured in the history books than experienced in performance. This enterprise changed that state of affairs for ever.

The arguments which are now sometimes made (chiefly by those who are unaware of the extraordinary and revolutionary step which these performances represented), decrying the slightly "raw" (I prefer "vocal") sound of original instruments, or the occasional shakiness of a boy soprano soloist, miss the point of this enterprise, which was to present the music in a new way using Bach's own contemporary resources. Leonhardt and Harnoncourt are the first to insist that using "historical instruments" makes sense because those are simply the best tools for the job. Re-constituting something old has never been their aim. Rather, their idea was to break free of the mindless tradition of performance which took no account of the sounds that Bach actually had in his head when he created his "well-regulated" music for the churches of Saxony. And how does this work in practice? We are left to marvel at an extraordinary level of accomplishment on the part of nearly everyone associated with this project, vocally and instrumentally.

Gustav Leonhardt was well aware (and hopeful) that subsequent generations would likely improve upon aspects of performance which still remained to be sorted out. But, as he said, it was a start. Indeed, when he and Harnoncourt were jointly awarded the Erasmus prize in the Netherlands in 1980, he remarked, with singular modesty and self-awareness: "It was not done well, but it is remarkable that it was done at all". This tells us more about Leonhardt's famous humility, than it does about the standards of these performances, which are usually (with few exceptions) very high indeed. In many instances they will never be surpassed. What we have here is a glimpse of one of music's "golden" ages captured forever on disc. What the listener will marvel at is the extraordinary assuredness of technique and style which is evident in every one of these cantata performances.

The solo vocal contributions of Kurt Equiluz, Max van Egmond, Paul Esswood, Marjanne Kweksilber (BWV 51) are simply without equal, and the current generation of fine Bach singers would be the first to concede their enormous debt to the participants in this great enterprise (their teachers, in many cases). The choirs should also be singled out for attention: Wiener Sangerknaben, Tolzer Knabenchor, Hannover Knabenchor, Choir of Kings College, Cambridge as well as directors Heinz Hennig, Gerhard Schmidt-Gaden, Philippe Herreweghe, David Willcocks and Hans Gillesberger. So Europe's finest were all involved in this.

The instrumental soloists: Frans Bruggen, Walter van Hauwe, Kees Boeke, Anner Bylsma, Jurg Schaftlein, Lucy van Dael, Sigiswald, Wieland and Bart Kuijken, Ton Koopman, Bob van Asperen, Lidewij Schiefes, Alice Harnoncourt, Herbert and Herwig Tachezi, Erich Hobarth, Friedemann Immer - to list only the more familiar names - have created a whole world of intelligent and vital performance which has transformed musical thought in our time. No-one in any area of musical performance has remained untouched by the ideas which are so forcefully presented here (even those who'd be the last to admit it). The fundamental idea of treating each period's music as a vital and representative product of its time is one which now extends to music of all periods, signaling the fulfilment of one of Leonhardt's and Harnoncourt's chief aims: to eliminate the artificial distinction between mainstream and "early" music, and, instead, to treat all music with proper respect for its origins and context.

What this recording continues to offer the listener is the experience of hearing the music for the first time, which the technical polish of subsequent surveys cannot quite match. For the young person wishing to learn about music, there is no better starting point than investing in this set, now available at a fraction of its original cost (unfortunately, minus the scores, which were one of the hallmarks of this series in its first incarnation on LP.

It seems pointless to list highlights, but one might start with the following: BWV 1, 6, 8, 11, 13, 19, 23, 29 and so on. The list is endless. Better still, buy the set and begin a life-time's voyage of discovery instead. Bach, Leonhardt and Harnoncourt: you can't do better than that. Oh, and we should also acknowledge the contribution of the founder recording producer for this project, Wolf Erichson (even though he didn't stay with Teldec to the end of it). Without him, the revolution in informed and intelligent music performance on recordings would never have happened.

This complete set of Bach sacred cantatas is not only a bargain price, but it contains some of the most profound interpretations these pieces ever had. Recorded during the 1970s on period instruments, with some of most prodiguous singers (Equiluz, Esswood) and an outstanding orchestral support, this is the best integral collection of cantatas there is. In order to restore the forgotten sence of baroque music, instrumentation is reduced to a minimum, the continuo is supported with antique instruments such as the basoon, tenors have been thoughtfully selected as NON-operatic. Another reconstructionist aspect was the use of boy choirs, which in later recordings Harnoncourt gave up. Boy choirs are not only authentical, but have the advantage of pitch purity. While in some arias (such as the extraordinary duet "lobe den herren" - BWV 137) this seems an excellent choice, in most it fails in more or less apparent manner.

While Herreweghe's or Gardiner's new interpretations are CERTAINLY better in both orchestral and vocal support, they all are greatly in debt of Harnoncourt/Leonhard, for it's always simple to improve something ALREADY existing instead of breaking new grounds (as this stellar 1970's recording did). Not to be forgotten is the fact newer version bring a sence of lightness which pleases anyone's ears, but it's manytimes inappropriate for the content of the music.

5 out of 5 stars Teldec Set Still Holds Up After 30 Years.......2001-04-11

This set of almost 200 cantatas is, without a doubt, a milestone in recording history, and that alone makes it valuable. There are now at least two other competing sets on the market (Helmuth Rilling's complete set--on modern instruments, alas!--and Ton Koopman's period performance set still in the works), but this one, warts and all, still captivates and draws the listener into the world of Bach's cantatas like no other.

I would argue that no one can really claim to know Bach without knowing both his organ works and his cantatas. After all, this is the music that occupied him for most of his professional life. Most of these cantatas were written as part of his duties at Leipzig, and while in the hands of any lesser composer that might have meant uninspired music cranked out week by week out of necessity, Bach rarely, if ever, had an off day. Each cantata is a little world unto itself, a place you can retreat to for 20 minutes and either reflect on their spiritual message (which, be warned, is sometimes grim indeed), or just lose yourself in the beauty and grace of the melodic lines.

Harnoncourt and Leonhardt choose to keep these performances intimate; this is not the Bach of the concert hall; these are direct, personal expressions that work well in the private space of one's living room. Some of the playing sounds a bit shaky by today's standards--apparently some of the soloists were still discovering how to play period instruments that had not been heard in centuries--and the boy soloists seem to strain at their parts sometimes, especially in the earlier recordings, but that only adds to the charm: I much prefer the uncertain readings to letter-perfect performances offered by others. The performances actually draw the listener's attention away from the playing itself, forcing attention on the music and the text, which is entirely consistent with the nature of these pieces.

For those who don't want to spend the 500+ dollars all at once, Teldec also offers these in six-CD sets at a great budget price. They're worth every penny. My only disappointment is that the CD package doesn't include the scores, as the old Telefunken vinyl sets did. But that's perfectly understandable. This set reminds us why Harnoncourt and Leonhardt were once at the forefront of the period-instrument movement. Let's hope that Teldec keeps these recordings in print for a long, long time.

Now folks, both of what the two other reviewers wrote about the tragical death of Fritz Wunderlich is wrong. Wunderlich died in hospital at September 17 1966. He had broken his skull, when he fell down the stairs in the hunting-house of a friend. Late in the evening of September 16, Wunderlich, as usual when not at home, had phoned his wife in Munich. He was very tired from strolling through the forest the whole day, making out the ideal locations for the hunt, which should start early in the next morning (Wunderlich was a passionate hunter). After he had wished his wife a good night, he went to the staircase in order to go down to his bedroom at the first floor. He still wore his heavy hunting boots - with open shoestrings! As walking downstairs, Wunderlich struggled over the open shoestrings and grabbed for the banisters, which was not more than a rope, fixed to the wall. The banisters teared out, and Wunderlich fell down the whole stairs. Fritz Wunderlich died in hospital the next day. It was only short before his 36'th birthday. An exceptional singing career had come to an untimely end. Some people believe that Wunderlich was drunken at the time of accident. If this is true can't be proven any more. But still this is not what his close friends said, regarding his accident and his death. In my opinion Wunderlich was the last of the really great tenors of the last century. All the tenors which came to fame after him (sorry folks, even such maestros as Pavarotti and Domingo) lack a certain quality in singing. It's the ease of breath flow, or singing on the breath without pushing the voice, it's the overtones, the legato, the mezza voce, the messa di voce and many more things - in short: the overall beauty of the voice through both registers. Wunderlich was the last tenor who had all this. Other examples are Caruso, McCormack, Gigli (despite the sobbing in his later recordings) and of course the wonderful Jussi Björling. But these are only some few names. If you listen for example to the cd's in the box "Famous tenors of the past" you will find that there were many very good and outstanding tenors in the first half of the 20'th century and - as we can only assume - in the time before the invention of the grammophone. Take a close look at todays famous tenors (I know, there are some quite good and promising ones) but what are they in comparison to those tenors (or better to say, to their voices and singing) I just mentioned before?

Please make your own decision.

5 out of 5 stars Fritz Wunderlich can do no wrong...........2006-05-05

... okay, maybe. It's just that I've never heard a recording I didn't love. And I prefer that he sing everything in German even when that means not using original language.

This is a bit strange because I'm most often bugged by Don Carlos and Vepres in Italian (just a personal quirk). Of course, I'm also bugged by dropping the "s" in Don Carlos, which is always incorrect. The man's name IS Carlos whether in Italian or French.

I tried to write Mr. Avila a personal note, but could not, so let me say that Fritz Wunderlich did not die of cancer, but a dreadful accident in Scotland (I'll not go into the whys and wherefores, I just wanted to set PART of the record straight.)

5 out of 5 stars The Wonder of Wunderlich.......2005-11-22

Deutsche Grammophone does it again! This is an extensive 3-cd compilation album featuring the artistry of the great German tenor Fritz Wunderlich in a variety of vocal repertoire - Baroque cantata/oratorio, opera and Lieder. Like the other critic pointed out, I first heard Fritz sinigng a superb Tamino in the Karl Bohm Magic Flute, although I have also heard him sing Lieder opposite the mezzo soprano Christa Ludwig and baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, who were his contemporaries and colleagues. Wunderlich died tragically in 1966 of cancer. He inspired a generation of purely lyric tenors or "tenors di grazie" whose charming voice would never roughen and lack grace. His Germanic style earned him popularity in World War II Europe and he was the leading exponent of Lieder in the 50's. His tenor voice is glorious, as close to a male angel as possible. On this recording, we are treated to sumptuous arias from Bach's Christmas/Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas. Also noteworthy are the unsurpassed performances of Mozart tenor heroes- such as Belmonte from "Die Entfuhrung Aus Dem Serail" (Abduction from the Seraglio) and his unbeatable Tamino from Die Zauberflote The Magic Flute. He sings bel canto opera arias fo tenor, from master composers Rossinni, Bellini and Verdi. While I don't much like that he is singing Italian arias in German, one must remember that at this time, in the LP Era of World War II Germany and Austria, German-born opera singers sang Italian opera in German translation/revisions. While many German singers could indeed sing in Italian, they were mostly trained to sing it in German because of excessive national pride and because Germans viewed Italian opera as course and un-melodic. Still, there have been superb German singers who sang in Italian like Wagner diva Birgit Nilsson, baritone Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, tenor Peter Schreier, soprano Edda Moser, baritone Walter Berry, tenor Herman Pretty, all post-Wunderlich sensations. Wunderlich sings Lieder in one CD with great and unrivaled musicianship. Especially impressive are the Viennese pieces. Further to the cd's this album is equipped with photos of Wunderlich and his family and a detailed profile biography.

5 out of 5 stars I wish I could give this release more than 5 stars: it's terrific!!!.......2005-10-28

I knew little about the German tenor Fritz Wunderlich (1930-1966), except reading the accolades given to his recordings and performances by reviewers in "American Record Guide" over the past 13 years. I knew Wunderlich recorded the role of Tamino in the famous DG recording of Mozart's "Die Zauberflote", with Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic (Now on DG Originals CDs), but was not aware of what a wide range of repertoire he had until hearing this release.

This release has a wide variety of Wunderlich's discography, including Bach arias from his Christmas and Easter Oratorios, and movements from 2 cantatas; his Mozart roles in "Die Entfuhrung aus dem Serail" (Eugen Jochum/Bavarian Radio Orchestra) and "Die Zauberflote" (Karl Bohm/Berlin Philharmonic); a variety of arias and duets by Rossini, Bellini, Verdi, Richard Strauss, mostly sung in German, and with Hermann Prey, baritone and Erika Koth, soprano in many of the duets; Baroque arias by Handel, from "Xerxes" (including the famous "Ombre mai fu" sung in German) and "Julius Caesar", selections from Monteverdi's "Orfeo" (an early track from 1955 sung in Italian); Schumann's "Dichterliebe", 4 Beethoven Lieder, including "Adelaide" and "Der Kuss"; and 9 Schubert lieder, including "An der Musik," and "Der Musensohn", all with Hubert Giesen, piano; Popular songs such as "Granada" and Viennese songs, with chamber orchestra accompaniment. There are no texts for the songs, but you may have text booklets with other CD releases, so don't really need them when you hear Wunderlich's beautiful voice.

There is a booklet with articles about Wunderlich's career, including a preface by his widow, Eva Wunderlich, photos of Wunderlich as a boy and young man, with his wife Eva in 1965, and children Constanze, Wolfgang, and Barbara. I enjoy reading and looking at the booklet, even apart from listening to the beautiful recordings.

Wunderlich was a genius, and his voice sounds great in every track, mono (some, but not a majority) and stereo (most of the tracks in the 7 discs are stereo) alike. If you love great music, and opera, but like me aren't often of a mind to sit still for 3 hours to listen to one, get this. It's a great release, and reasonably priced to boot. I'm thankful to God for great music, for the ability to hear and feel, and for Fritz Wunderlich and his service to music lovers everywhere.

4 out of 5 stars Nice performances.......2005-03-16

Leonhardt/Harnoncourt do a good job of recording period-like performances of Bach's cantatas. The boys voices are unique and fun to listen to. Probably not for the Bach novice. The use of period instruments and boy's voices will sound foreign at first. However, the music is beautiful never the less. All us Bach fans owe Harnoncourt and Leonhardt a great deal for their collection of recordings of Bach's wonderful cantatas. Thanks guys.

I welcome feedback on this and all reviews at wstrnlibwarrior@yahoo.com

4 out of 5 stars Stunning voices...however.......2002-12-07

The singing on this CD is unsurpassed, for what it is. Keep in mind that if you are not partial to boys' voices then this disc will not be to your taste. It is not necessarily a matter of authenticity. Yes, all male castes is the way Bach would have had it, but the idea seems too foreign for modern tastes.
Personally, after the initial experience of hearing boys play the roles of soprano, it is hard to go back. Indeed, there is a purity to the singing of found here that I have yet to find elsewhere.
There is one great reservation, this rendition of cantata no.80 is far inferior to the conductors other interperations of the same piece. Had I not known the disparity of the two, I may had given it five stars.

4 out of 5 stars Really nice for the price.......2001-02-12

This CD features a collection of previously released material from the early 1970's to the late '80's that is now hard to obtain. The CD contains excerpts from the most famous of Bach's Cantatas. Out of the CD's 15 tracks, nine are sung by the Tolzer Knabenchor, four from the Vienna Boys Choir with Chorus Viennensis, and two are from the Knabenchor Hannover. There are some splendid duets and inspiring solos on these tracks, and there are some moments of tredpidation as well. The idea of the CD according to Emil Platen's sleeve notes is to highlight the melodic and harmonic relation of Bach's setting to the dominant affect of the text. This is achieved delightfully in "Der Himmel lacht"(BWV 31) where the young Vienna soloists sing with fluidity obtaining a verticle dominance over the rolling bass line, soaring freely. Of note as well is the "Weinen, Klangen, Sorgen, Zagen" (BWV 12) hauntingly and delicately sung by the Tolzer Knabenchor who are accompanied by the English tradition choir of King's College Cambridge. Oddly enough the recent recording of Bach's B-Minor Mass by Robert King featured the Tolzer Knabenchor with a English choir and Bach reworked this part of his "Weinen, Klangen" to become the "Et Incarnatus" of his B-Minor Mass.(BWV 232) So here is an interesting chance to compare the two recordings! Among other things one gets to hear the Tolzers sing "Jesus bleibet meine Freude" and Bach's "Ein feste Berg ist unser Gott." All told, this CD provides a good sample of Bach's connection between Music and Text, all highlighted in the etheral treble voice- a very "Bachian" idea. Also, for the price it is a must for the Bach collector, and the treble collector as well!

2 out of 5 stars Bad taste..........2000-09-22

These recordings don't bring out the potential in Bach's genius. In my humble opinion using boy sopranos, screeching trumpets, and conducting not for the music's sake but just to come close to sounding like the original performances are just bad taste. Other conductors have recorded much more moving and beautiful accounts of these works. The only good thing about this album is that there are not that many other concise Bach choruses collections out there. But even so, why did they leave out the most famous part of Wachet auf?

5 out of 5 stars Erato Now Gone, Let's Begin Again with Koopman's Cantatas.......2005-01-18

Anyone interested in these cantatas has likely discovered that they had been begun under the Erato label in the early 90's and were discontinued after volume 12, disconcerting some. Ton Koopman, unabashed, obtained his own label, continuing the series (which is planned to finish at volume 22), even returning to the early volumes in re-issues under the new Challenge Classics covering. This volume is the first re-issue and parallels the new releases in the series.

A side note for those who want only the sacred cantatas: volumes 4 & 5 are composed entirely of the secular cantatas.

The tempi have been slowed slightly from the original Erato releases, but, have no fear, Koopman knows what he is doing. "Ich hatte viel Bekummernis" alone is worth the money, and Kai Wessel's counter-tenor is a treat throughout. Reformed Protestant theology, the counterpoint of Bach, and the wonder of the Baroque era, all contribute to a series to which the initiate will turn often for pleasure.

Bach's 200 existing cantatas (100 more have been lost) represent one of music history's most remarkable achievements. The first volume in Erato's ambitious but much-needed traversal of the complete canon contains nine cantatas from Bach's early career. Except for "Christ lag in Todesbanden," these are lesser-known works, yet that doesn't mean they are of lesser quality. Here are some of Bach's most compelling choruses, accompanied by colorful and ingenious instrumental writing. Highlights abound, including the appendices that reproduce Bach's revised versions of cantatas 4 and 21. The choral singing is excellent: sensitive and agile, with unforced tone. Of course, there's Barbara Schlick's fluttery vibrato and occasional shrillness and tenor Guy de Mey's emphasis on "prettiness" over textual understanding. But from the very beginning of BWV 21 we hear confident, well-prepared music-making that carries throughout the recording. Perhaps most importantly--and largely due to Koopman's even-handed, purposeful direction--everything, including the sonic ambience, feels and sounds in proportion: a feature that bodes well for the whole series and makes this an excellent reference set. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars The best performance of Bach Cantatas (Volume 1).......2000-12-15

Ton Koopman starts the complete recording of Bach cantatas with some masterpieces written by Bach in Cothen and Weimar. I consider useful to remark the characteristics of each cantata so you can realize the differences among these masterpieces. BWV 21: This very famous cantata contains some remarkable pieces: the Sinfonia, the first chorus and an aria in F minor in the first part, and a duett (soprano-bass)and the final striking chorus with trumpets and timpani in the second part. N.B. There are also two arias (n.5 and 10)written for tenor, but in this recording they are singed by the soprano (Barbara Schlick). BWV 131: This cantata is based on the psalm "De prufundis"; the organic is composed only for oboe and strings but music is very moving. BWV 106: This magnific masterpiece is written for human soul; the tranquillity of music is given in the exact way by Koopman. Moreover there are 2 recorders and 2 violas da gamba that give a very ancient atmosphere. BWV 196: It's very short, but music is pretty. There are a lot of Italian reminiscences especially in the parts of violins. BWV 71: A very interesting cantata without recitatives; the string orchestra is enriched by oboes, recorders, trumpets, timpani, violoncello piccolo and organo obbligato. BWV 150: An other cantata with italian influences; Ton Koopman doesn't use the choir but only the solo voices. BWV 31: After a sinfonia with full orchestra there is a striking chorus in which you can examine the great skill of the Amsterdam Baroque Choir ( and also the Orchestra ). BWV 185: It opens with a strange duet for soprano and tenor with female choir; the first aria for alto, oboe and strings is enough famous. BWV 4: This very famous masterpiece was written to commemorate the death of Christ (Easter). Koopman gives a very good interpretation both for the sonorities and for the tempos without altering the atmosphere of great religiousness.

4 out of 5 stars Heaven laughs, earth rejoices........2000-05-09

Recently appointed 'honorary doctor' Ton Koopman with his Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra and Choir embarked a few years ago on a project to record all the Bach cantatas, both religious and secular. Koopman chose to record the cantatas in chronological order, and not by BWV number. Consequently, vol. 1 of the series (that eventually will include 20 volumes) includes 'early cantatas' composed in Weimar and Mühlhausen. It even includes the cantata "Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich" BWV 150, which is assumed to be the oldest Bach cantata in existence, written before 1707, i.e. the Arnstadt period. The Amsterdam Baroque Choir and Orchestra show to be well at home in the music of Bach. Of the soloists especially Guy de Mey (tenor) and Klaus Mertens (bass) should be mentioned. Koopman's interpretations are allways with a certain drive, which sometimes tends to result in "nervousness". His relatively high tempi however do work as they give the music liveliness and lightness. In this first volume there is sometimes to much of this, leading to a distortion of the balance between liveliness and "draught" that Bach's music needs too. All in all this first volume promises a series of Bach cantatas that will make heaven laugh and the earth rejoice, to quote the opening lines of cantata BWV31 "Der Himmel lacht! die Erde jubilieret".

5 out of 5 stars Great Bach Visions.......2006-09-26

Beautiful and colorful improvs on some Bach favorites, with the piano work of Ira Stein and the sax playing of Dann Zinn being the highlights. The energy and enthusiasm recorded during this session is powerful stuff. Moments of true exhilaration in here. Don't miss this one!

    5 out of 5 stars A classic CD.......1999-10-04

Ira Stein has been a creative and very individual musician since his first releases on Windham Hill. His work on Narada Records further matured his artistic vision and he is now taking a first step with this album, Bach Chorals, to continue his musical expression regardless of what the music industry might find acceptable at the moment. He comes from a musical tradition that many people may not be familiar with but that deserves recognition. The group Oregon (Ralph Towner, Paul McCandless, and others) lay an important foundation for Stein's musical discoveries and his latest explorations into the sacred world of Bach's Chorals shows that he is an artist that deserves to be watched and followed. He is a great musician, a free spirit and a very creative arranger. Keep an eye out for his music in the years to come...

    5 out of 5 stars It's terrific!.......1999-06-06

I am Ira Stein's niece, and I have listened to all of his C.D.'s and been to many of his concerts at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA. I think all of his recordings are very good. I really like his new C.D., BACH IMPROVISATIONS. I am 11 years old, and I have enjoyed his music all my life. He plays for me when I visit him in Oakland from my home of 2 years in Portland, OR. He has been playing piano for over 25 years. He is really an example that if you love something and try hard at it, you will succeed.

5 out of 5 stars Great musicians present great jazz based on Bach Chorales.......1999-03-19

I had the privilege to be present at Yoshi's the night this album was recorded. Everyone there was held spellbound by this music--which is classic and yet modern. Each piece begins with the Bach chorale statement and then these excellent musicians take the melodies present in every level of Bach and make concert jazz. My favorite is number four on the album "Hilf, Herr Jesu, lass gelingen," but the listener cannot go wrong with any of the nine numbers. The instrument combination of piano, cello and soprano saxophone is unusual to me, and I think it would surprise Bach also; but I also believe this is an exceptional way to get an appreciation of the beauty of the classical line while enjoying the modern presentation. The music is decorous and sensual at the same time--a most intriguing mix.

5 out of 5 stars If you love classical, and love jazz, you'll love this........1999-03-18

Last October (1998), when Ira and his group made this live CD at Yoshi's in Oakland, I was unfortunately hospitalized for emergency surgery, so I was unable to attend the concert. When the CD came out, my wife and I bought it, and I was entranced. Then, in March 1999, I was able to hear the group play some of the pieces at Borders in Emeryville. Absolutely top notch, even though Ira had to play a keyboard, and was on his feet the whole time.

These three first class musicians were all educated classically and in this album they not only return to their roots, but also expand the classical Chorales of Bach into what they have called "chamber jazz". Yes, it's jazz, but it's also got a bit of the "new age" about it.

Typically they play through a chorale pretty straight, and then the variations begin. Ira's piano craftsmanship is impeccable, and amazing. I hear Ira play two or three times a week (he's pianist at our church) and I never cease to be amazed at the skill and feeling that he brings to his playing. He improvises better than any pianist I have ever heard. Dann's saxophone is incredible--he is quite possibly the most accomplished saxophonist I have ever heard. Kenny G, eat your heart out. And Joe--he and his cello make love sounds together; it is as if they have become one, and are drawing sounds from the mind of God himself.

You will not believe this CD until you have heard it. I will give you a couple of caveats--I am not a professional musician myself, and I have a conflict of interest in that I know all three artists, and work closely with two of them day in and day out. But let me tell you this: Bach would approve of what they have done with his music. If you love Bach, and love jazz, you must have this CD.

2 out of 5 stars Grown-ups encouraged to try the real thing.......2004-07-25

OK: I admit it. I own Wagner orchestral recordings. I don't have the courage to face up to 140 hours of screeching to get the odd beautiful moment. But eliminating the human voice from a Bach cantata is like drinking beer in Church. I know a lot of good artists have done it. But there are folks out there that have never HEARD a real Bach Cantata, even if they are familiar with some of the extraordinary meodies that Bach spun out. They are cheating themselves. Maybe 18th Century Luthern pietism is hard to find now. However, religion has generated splendid art through the ages and Bach's cantatas are about at the top of an extraordinary category of human creation. Do yourself a favor: look up any cantata on this present collection and get a real live copy of it - choir, solists and all. A music lover would.

5 out of 5 stars Great performances of Bach's A-list.......2002-02-14

This is a selection of the best instrumental music from Bach's religous works.

The performances are excellent, especially the organ+orchestra tracks featuring the astounding organist E. Power Biggs (see my other reviews). The orchestras and especially the trumpets are also excellent

Tracks 1 and 11 are mind blowing, although all are good.

      Great CD!

      4 out of 5 stars Nice Sampling of Bach's Orchestral Works . . ........2002-02-12

There's more to Bach's repertoire than solo organ and violin works, and this Sony release aptly demonstrates his versatility as a composer. Besides the Brandenburg Concertos, Bach wrote many concertos, cantatas, and sinfonias for orchestra. This disc, which offers but a sampling of Bach's orchestral works, includes both ADD/DDD recordings. True, as with other ADD recordings, I can hear the background hiss (not unusual with older rocordings) on certain pieces. Fortunately, this noise is not distracting (just slightly noticeable), and in no way detracts from the performance of these pieces. Overall, a fine recording that speaks to the greatness of Bach. After listening to this disc, I hope you will be inspired to seek out other recordings of orchestral works by Bach (many of which are also at bargain prices).
