Dorumsgaard; who knew?.......2006-07-18

This is a great CD. I bought this CD specifically because I am a fan of Flicka. The CD opened a whole new world of music to me.
Dorumsgaard is an amazing composer who has, I've come to find out, over 20 volumes of beautiful music written for the voice and piano.

This has led me to other singers who have recorded his music.

This CD, however, stands alone as a great recital from top to bottom by Frederica von Stade.

Recitals should always be as thoughtful as this one.......2002-07-26

This is a great find, recorded live in Edinburgh in 1976. Hearing this outstanding concert, it is easy to understand why Von Stade has a reputation for intimate rapport with an audience; she has a beautiful instrument coupled with unusually sensitive interpretive skills, plus a sense of humor. The program is wide-ranging and includes two of her best-known encores, as well as a bonus track from Massenet's "Cendrillon," with full orchestra conducted by Mario Bernardi.

The Ives set, with its contrasts in color and mood, could be a microcosm for the entire recital. "Memories," with its two contrasting parts, seems to be the audience favorite, judging from the laughter and spontaneous applause. And "Tom Sails Away" quietly quotes a familiar George M. Cohan song with gentle poignancy. The Mahler set is gorgeously done, as well as a colorful Poulenc group. And Benjamin Britten's haunting chord changes put a set of British folk songs in a fresh new context.

The two encores could not be more different: a sly rendition of the "Tipsy Song" from Offenbach's La Périchole, followed by Carol Hall's touching "Jenny Rebecca," which von Stade apparently learned after she heard it sung by Barbra Streisand.

Two small quibbles that keep this from being a five-star recommendation: the piano sound is a bit metallic, in the way that some live recordings can be. This should not deter anyone from purchasing the disc, and is no reflection whatsoever on Martin Isepp, whose outstanding playing and instincts are crucial to this recital's success. Also, the booklet notes are a bit sloppily edited. The track numbers begin with 1 through 7, then skip to 9 - i.e., track 9 should be no. 8, track 10 is no. 9, and so on. And the last paragraph just ends, with an incomplete sentence dangling in the air. But this is minor; just take a nice pen and make the changes in the booklet yourself.

An unusually varied recital by one of the most poised and intelligent singers of our time.

Absolutely priceless early Von Stade not available elsewhere.......1999-08-28

What a wonderful concert! The material is varied and well-executed. Only three years into her international career, Miss Von Stade shows here exactly why she became an ovenight sensation in Europe. Most of the material in this concert has not previously been available on record. For Von Stade fans, this is an absolute MUST. For others, who obviously have never heard her, this is a glorious introduction to one of the world's finest singers.

Upshaw's first recording. Good stuff........2006-04-28

'Dawn Upshaw Sings Wolf, Strauss, Rachmaninoff, Ives, and Weill' seems to hedge its bets by touching many of the important modern art song bases. By so doing, it demonstrates Upshaw's range in conveying the romantic angst of Wolf's interpretation of Goethe poems to the stark modern angles of Kurt Weill's two songs.

While I believe Upshaw is not as strong as, for example, Anne Sofie Von Otter, I think her interpretation of Wolf songs comes off just a bit better. At least it is a very nice contrast. I also think she will not displace Ute Lemper as a Weill interpreter, but for us Weill fans, every new interpretation is welcome.

If you like female art song vocalists, Upshaw is definately worth your time and money.

If the second half of the 20th Century has musical signs, they must include that phenomenal German singer Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau who dominated the recital and concert halls, the opera stages and the recording studios in a way no other artist has done it, except maybe Leonard Bernstein. In celebration of this great artist's 75th birthday we have here a set which includes the gems of his lieder repertoire, starting with those great Schubert cycles in their most vivid performances. Just listen to those early renditions of the Schone Mullerin or with Jorg Demus, or to Schuman's Dichterliebe cycle (with the same pianist). And you shall not miss the artistry of this most sensitive voice in full volume of Mahler lieder with piano and orchestral songs. And what about the Morike lieder by Hugo Wolf? Well, you shall probably wonder at that special cooperation between the singer and the Russian pianist Svitoslav Richter. It is a performance of lifetime, and so it is with the Wintereise of Schubert with Barnboim at the piano. Those who know the artistry of Fischer-Dieskau and even those who have already other recordings of those great works will not regret having this special set. For the newcomers to this great artist there will be a lot to discover, The music itself, sure, but mainly the art of interpratation. In this alone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau shine high and above all other singers.

If you have never heard Thomas Hampson sing, this is the perfect introduction. Every Lied/aria is beautiful, beautifully sung. Thomas Hampson has awakened me for Verdi, Puccini, Bach, and others, whom I thought I did not like. But no matter what the composers are, his voice is just out of this world. Beautiful, sweet, velvety, when it needs to be so. It truly lifts me up out of this world, onto a higher plane of existence - a bit like the final song of "Das Lied von der Erde". Extatic!

Hampson's Pretty "Portrait".......2000-08-16

Thomas Hampson's wonderful baritone voice shines in his CD "A Portrait of Thomas Hampson - From Bach to Zemlinsky." The songs vary greatly from one another, showcasing Mr. Hampson's ability to adjust his voicings to accuratlely reflect the spirit of the piece.

A Perfect Musical Collaboration!.......2005-03-01

Though this recording dates back to 1991 it remains one of the finest collections of American art songs in the lieder catalogue. Although the 36 songs in this collection are by Charles Ives, Edward MacDowell and Charles Griffes (some of America's finest composers), the songs are written to German texts, reflecting the trend of the times of these composers' lives when studying in Germany was the accepted course of instruction in preparation for advanced careers in music.

The results here captured with utmost delicacy and tenderness and elegance by Thomas Hampson and Armen Guzelimian are some of the most beautiful yet sadly neglected songs in the literature. Especially surprising are the songs by Ives, written before he began his unique changes to music that we still appreciate as his legacy.

The balance between these two artists is not only sensitive but alos beautifully recorded. Hampson is in top vocal status, ever the interpretive artist at the will of the composers. Guzelimian does not accompany: Guzelimian collaborates. His piano shares the vocal conversations in the most meaningful, text/phrasing appropriate manner.

For lovers of lieder and devotees of the recital medium, this recording is an absolute must for the library. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, February 2005

THE THOMAS HAMPSON COLLECTION: SONGS BY AMERICAN COMPOSERS is a combination of other recordings presented in a fine format that takes advantage of works written for voice and piano by Ives, Griffes, and MacDowell as well as works for voice and piano arranged for orchestra - the Old American Songs by Aaron Copeland.

If this collection doesn't ring as true as the complete collection of the songs on the Hampson/Guzelimian recording, it may be because the Copeland songs are more of the funny encore types. Though originally composed for voice and piano, the orchestration is simple and not bombastic. And Hampson gives them his all, well backed by Hugh Wolff and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. Recorded together these songs represent a rather strong cross-section of Americana in music. Grady Harp, February 2005
