The String Quintet, a live performance recorded in stereo in 1978, is a lovely version of a lovely piece. But the disc's major historical interest is in the Piano Quintet, recorded on 78s in 1947 and once issued on an early Mercury LP. Frantisek Maxian was a student of Vilem Kurz, for whom Dvořák wrote his Piano Concertos. The Ondricek Quartet was founded in 1921 and still had two of its original members in 1947. In other words, this richly inflected performance is steeped in tradition and gives us a taste of Dvořák's music as it might have been heard shortly after the composer's death. Lives Up To The Title, Fine Variety Of Genre's........2007-02-04

This CD is a great way to enjoy a large variety of Classical Composers & many of their best known pieces. Vivaldi's "Four Seasons," is an all time favorite. There are vocals, Piano pieces, & some fine Violins. I found the latter the most enjoyable. Here you can find Rodrigo & Pachelbell. Samuel Barber's haunting Adagio will make your skin tingle. This may not be to everyones taste, but if you wish to relax? Give this a couple of listens.

Good for relaxing pregnant women.......2007-01-17

I stumbled onto this album whilst searching bit torrent websites for classical music. I don't normally listen to classical music but thought it might be relaxing for my pregnant wife. After hearing the quality of the performances, the arrangement, and the recording I decided to buy the album from amazon. All the songs you would expect from a "best album in the world" are there and they are not boring to listen to like a lot of other classical albums. I now play this album in the car constantly and the wife requested it be played at the hospital during the birth.

Does what it set out to do, very well.......2006-11-15

So i'm a classical music veteran, someone who prefers to collect a complete work, rather than classical compilations. I probably would not have listened to this album at all if my dad didnt buy it for me as a gift. By now, i own the complete works that over half of the excepts on this disc come from. I am a purist if ever there was one.

That said, i totally adore this set because i have learned to take it on its own terms. These discs weren't meant for expert classical listeners, so a review from that sort of mindset is useless. This set was meant for pure, easy listening, and for a basic starters kit for classical newbies. Most of all, it was just meant to do what the title says, to relax the average human being. classical expert or not.

Yes, some of these pieces have been altered or shortened, like Mozart's Flute and Harp Concerto Andantino, but they have been edited for a good enough reason: the full versions would have been too long to flow with the rest of the album. And also, the full versions contain so much development that they don't become easy listening anymore. The shortened versions work in the context of the album. Most essentially, the shortened versions on the discs still convey the main flavor the composers were going for. The melodies and themes remain unchanged.

To sum up, it is true that when i want to actually listen deeply to classical music, this album would never be a choice. I would want to hear the complete works like the composers intended. But at certain times when i simply don't mind about that stuff, when i just need to loosen up and free my mind of stress with some nice melodies, this set does the job well enough.

Last but not least: being a purist and a classical buff, i am very particular about performance quality. I was very glad to find that EMI did not get lazy about this. All the artists are world-class, and all the performances are at least exceptional. Some performances are even quite excellent, like the Clair De Lune, which is one of the best i've heard. (Credit to Dame Lympany, the pianist.)

So once again, recommended for its stated purpose, to relax. I am a purist, a classical buff, and i still enjoy this disc. That says something.

TRULY The most relaxing and beautiful music ever written........2006-11-10

This album along with Volume 2 are now the two most valued albums in my music collection. I have all of the songs contained on these two albums but they are scattered through at least a dozen different albums and several are not performed by artists such as those that recorded this album and Volume 2.
SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL !!!!!!!!!!

Aside from the technical mastery and beautiful tone that are absolutes in all of his playing, one is dazzled by his curiosity and ability to adapt to so many forms and types of music. His Bach and Vivaldi are pellucid and played with non-sentimental crispness, his tango music gritty and rhythmically pungent, his jazz seemingly spontaneous, the "Meditation" from Thais simply ravishing, "Anything Goes" a romp, and the Appalachian music performed with both respect and a great twang, while the traditional Chinese music is fascinating. It's really a matter of how much Ma loves whatever he plays here, how entirely he becomes involved in it, and what a fine partner he invariably is to other musicians. I've found this collection to be extremely delightful! It gives you a sense of the versatility of Yo-Yo Ma like no other, with one disc being dedicated more to his classical side, while the other explores jazz and world music venues. Not your typical "greatest hits" collection.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

For those who want the most remembered passages of classical music's best-loved works, here's a package for you. On this bargain priced double-CD, you'll find music from 40 different classical composers; for the most part, the recordings excerpted here are some of the very best. Of course, you only get one Bach sampling (Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring, played by the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra) and one Mozart (A Little Night Music conducted by Herbert von Karajan), but this is still a nice collection--perhaps the starting point for a budding collection of classical music. This set's downfall? Unfortunately, though the liner notes discuss the evolution of classical music chronologically, the tracks are programmed in alphabetical order by composer's last name. This makes for some startling transitions! Emil Gilels's reflective performance of the Adagio from Beethoven's "Moonlight" sonata is followed by the crashing cymbals and bombast of Carmen's "March of the Toreadors," a recipe for a heart attack if there ever was one. Still, there's something here for everyone and the liner notes even explain what movies this music can be found in. A nice touch. --Jason Verlinde

Waste of money.......2006-01-12

Watch out for the volume leveling mentioned in another review. Surely the compliers could have come up with a better sort order than by composer. The change in tempo/volume between pieces makes it impossible to enjoy. My two CD's ended up in the trash.

This is a great CD full of many songs that you will recognize and enjoy. If you are someone who likes classical music but doesn't necessarily know which songs or which composers you like, then this CD is for you. You will likely recognize many of the songs as the classical songs you would have picked out to be your favorites.

If you like classical music don't buy this CD........2005-03-11

Most of the tracks were chopped down to 3-4 minutes so some of the best parts of the compositions are missing. I don't know what I was thinking trying to buy 40 classical songs on two CD's. If you really want to enjoy the music you would do better to purchase a CD with fewer, but better quality tracks.

A must for anyone wanting the staples of classical music.......2005-02-23

In my years of experience teaching Fine Arts to high school students, I know that the majority, if not all, of the music included on this album is commonly used in collge music appreciation courses. This is an excellent sample of truly all the "greatest hits" of classical music. My students enjoy listening to the music and have later told me when take their required music apreciation courses in college that they "already know it all" because of this CD! The recordings are clear, the selections are passionate, and the listener will gain a familiarity with all of the most commonly heard classical music used in tv commercials, movies, etc.
I recommend this album, along with the boxed set, "Age of the Classics" for anyone who is interested in becoming familiar with the most famous staples of classical music.

A great compilation.......2005-02-09

This cd somes up some of the greatest pieces of instrumental (and is some cases choral) music ever written. It is a great starter for a beginning classical music lover or a quick and easy all-in-one for those of us who study classical music for a living. I highly recommend this cd to anyone who wants to love or already does love classical music.

This is a great set of recordings for the money, the only problem was I've had to clean some of the CD's before they played correctly.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.

Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30

Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.

I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.

It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!

Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]

A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24

I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.
Highly recommended.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

An exceptional recording.......2006-01-20

There are three piano quintets recognized as masterpieces of the form: Brahms' Op. 34, Schumann's Op. 44 and Dvorak's Op. 81 here. Dvorak composed this work as part of his devotion to the Bohemian folk idiom and, along with the "Dumky" Trio and E-flat Piano Quartet, epitomize the national Czech music tradition. Similarly, the String Quartet Op. 51 was composed purposely with to showcase Slavic flavors and is rich in beauty and charm.

Everything seems to have come together in this reading to produce a great recording for the ages. Andreas Haefliger's joins the quartet with some sparking pianism that propells the fast movements with inspired verve and dazzling running semiquavers - all captured in brilliant clarity. Equally attractive is the poinant and serene second movement which is performed with a beautiful depth of passion and breathtaking emotive tonalities from the legendary Takacs Quartet. Overall, their temperament and approach here are ideal for Dvorak - appealing to his brilliant lyricism and love of the music of his homeland. The recording ambiance is bright, bold and perfectly balanced between instruments with just the right amount of spaciousness. In short, the Dvorak compositions on this CD are truly monumental, the playing of the highest caliber and the end result very attractive. Hopefully, we will see more recordings of Dvorak's chamber works from the Takacs Quartet (whose award-winning Beethoven Quartet cycle is also superb).

Living in Boulder (where the Takacs Quartet is in residence at Colorado University), I have had the priviledge to hear this superb quartet play in person. I thought they sounded great on disc, but to hear this ensemble in person is extraordinary. Among their many fine, award-winning recordings of Bartok, Beethoven and Haydn is this one of Dvorak recorded in 1998 with the brilliant first-violinist, Edward Dusinberre. Another change with this quartet came in 2005 with the departing of Violist Roger Tapping and the arrival of Geraldine Walther from the San Francisco Symphony (a wonderful addition). Also in 2005, The Takacs Quartet celebrated their 30th YEAR with original members Mr. Schranz and Fejer still going strong from the college days in Budapest.

This coupling scored very high with the music press who healded it as one of the great modern recordings of the Quintet. ClassicsToday gave it a perfect 10/10 for Artisty and Sound Quality with these accolades which I concur: "This is one of the most beautiful chamber music discs in the catalog. Throughout, the Decca engineers have managed to combine clarity with tonal richness, achieving perfect balances between the piano and strings in the quintet. Both works are similar in form and content, especially notable for their folk-inspired melodies and infectious dance rhythms." Another impressive recording of the piano quintet (but coupled with an early string quintet) comes from Susan Tomes and the Gaudier Quintet (Hyperion). Both are satisfying choices but my lean would be towards the Takacs/Haefliger recording for the quintet and especially their lush reading of the string quartet companion piece.

Impeccable!.......2004-07-11

This is a masterful performance that is polished and proportionate in every way. The music bursts with life in the hands of these musicians! Having seen the Takacs Quartet in live performance twice within the last 5 years I will say that these guys are definately on top of their "game". This becomes at least partly apparent by way of listening to this recording...one of the finest of these works!

DEEPENING DVORAK.......2003-01-30

No mixed feelings at all about this warmly autumnal performance; there is a genuine glow to the Haefliger/Takacs presence, an introspective ambience that separates it from the crowd. There is sweetness, too, and an affecting lyricism, particularly appealing in the tender treatment of the often-hectic opening movement, but even more so in the heartfelt second. Unlike any other recording I've heard, the Slavic melancholy imbued in this work is unashamedly brought to the fore by this ensemble, and I applaud them for their insight. Even the sparkling third movement earns kudos with its magical trio section (so beautiful!); and, too, the finale is brought off with just the right amount of panache and grace, sans the usual barnstorming.

The coupling of the magnificent String Quartet No. 10, Op. 51 couldn't be more perfect. Again, the same intimacy of playing prevails, the same glow. The sense of gentle give and take between the members of the Takacs Quartet is a joy. What a breathtaking and deeply devoted view they take of this quartet, with its exceptionally wonderful slow movement. I can't imagine a more revealing rendition of this work, frankly. Nor have I heard one.

The sound, although a bit ambient, suits and does not cloud clarity or expression of this most moving and impressive CD of these two Dvorak masterpieces.

Its one of the best played piano and string quartet from Dvorak out there.

About this string quartet... well those of you familliar with Deccas Bartok 6 string quartets understand the extremly high quality of these guys and if you dont... trust me on this or read all reviwes about Bartoks 6 string quartets on Decca with Takacs string quartet.

Haefliger is marvelous on piano here and do justice to Dvoraks lovely pieces.
